Greetings, Boy, I should have never said anything about the great weather last month. Cold weather showed up to bite me in the butt, the very last of December. From the warmest December I can remember to ten to twenty below wind chill the first of January. Ok, I’m ok with a warmup, let’s get started. I realize that Christmas is long gone and in the history books, but with our print deadlines and the way the month falls, this is the first that I can report on Christmas dinner. Christmas 2020 was unfortunately forfeited due to Dixie and I both fighting Covid, so we had plenty of time to figure out Christmas 2021. Well as the saying goes “Beef, its what’s for dinner,” and with an awesome pork loin chaser. First the beef, FareWay ran a special on prime rib roast, so Ol’ Mike called them up and reserved one for the week of Christmas. I kind of wished I would have filmed the look on my face at the check-out counter. We are way too used to going to the freezer for our beef. I don’t really know what I was thinking when they told me the price per pound. I guess I just didn’t do the figuring. Two hundred fifty-three dollars later, it was getting ready for Christmas dinner preparation. I searched the internet for the simplest recipe I could find and with adult supervision from my youngest daughter Mandi, preparation began. All we did was put on

a homemade rub. It consisted of a little bit of every bottle of seasoning I have in the house (there would be no way to duplicate that rub). I put it in the oven at 550 degrees for five minutes per pound, shut the oven off and kept the door shut for two hours. That was one deadly good chuck of beef, with the most haphazard seasoning. It turned out great. It seemed like there were no leftovers, so I’m calling it a success. On to my son-in-law’s pork loin. I’m not sure how he does it and he always tells me, “if I tell you, I’d have shoot you.” So, if he keeps bringing it over, I’m golden. I’m super impressed with the flavor, the seasoning, and how he keeps it moist and not overcooked. Just for the record, while no one was watching, I snuck enough for my breakfast for 3 days into the refrigerator. He can prepare and season pork like no other. He gave me some seasoning as a Christmas gift so we will experiment and see if we get close. To round out the Christmas dinner, my wife, daughters, and daughter-in-law prepared enough food to founder a person; real mashed potatoes, corn, deviled eggs, cookie pizzas, pies, desserts, homemade candy, etc, etc. I’m pretty sure that I out gained most steers on full feed for the day. Now I’m going to report on

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

This monthly column has admonished folks in the livestock business since mid-last year 2021 to prepare and cross-hedge your input costs on production of both livestock and grain. You must know by now that in the last 30 days the financial media has informed us that we are hitting 40-year highs on key inflation indices. This should not surprise most Americans who seem to have more wisdom about simple business than the vast majority of the men and women voted in as Congressmen and Senators. How many times have our own Grandfathers and Great Grandfathers reminded us that you can’t spend more than you bring in. Simply look back less than 2 years ago to the time that our not so United States of America began handing out free money during a pandemic whose origins seem obvious and we now have the veritable financial Titanic, meaning almost 30 TRILLION DOLLARS of national debt that must be inflated away like countries similar to Venezuela and Mexico have done in decades gone by. The piper always has to be paid and thus the question is who will pay the piper? Unfortunately it appears that your children and grandchildren will be the ones to pay the Piper with a lower standard of living even as many members of the family work more than one job to help the greater good of the family. The current inflation may only last through 2022 and 2023, however, just two years of rampant inflation can have collateral damage that most folks would think virtually impossible. History shows that stock markets detest inflation and higher interest rates. Now, let’s make the simple and reasonable assumption that housing has been bid up like box lunch social during Valentine’s Day because everyone’s IRA and or 401K plans have gone up year after year for 14 years back to the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2007-2008. Now let’s say history repeats and the stock market heads south for a few years and IRA’s and 401K plans drop a cool 35%-45%. Incidentally, did you know that a 35% drop in the stock market from present levels would still leave the stock market 40% higher than the low of the Wuhan virus scare? The point here is that the SP500 is so dramatically high that there is little oxygen left up here. Let the SP500 and Dow tank and in a blink of an eye folks think their financial future may have a problem and they stop spending so much on durable goods and trips to Texas Roadhouse and even cough up the most recent acquisition of the bigger and nicer house they just bought. This domino effect of inflation and interest rates moving up can bring the house of cards [pun intended] of stocks and housing to the ground with ‘financial red

ink cards’ lying all over the place. Did you notice a few weeks ago that on Friday January 14th that the economic data was very poor and missed economist expectations on both the ‘Retails Sales’ and the ‘Consumer Index’ data and yet the US Treasury Bond market went down a staggering 1-13? Interest rates move up while Treasuries go down and this validates the inflation curve that the Federal Reserve is now admitting they are running behind on. The US Bond market has had a near 35-year rally while interest rates have been manipulated down to force negative rates. The SP500 and Dow followed the Bond market since 2008 and now it’s about to come home to roost. Expect stagflation to continue--’STAG [stagnant weak economic growth] FLATION [inflation] to continue and then consider the dangerous possibility of a financial Sunami wherein the STAGFLATION turns into a depression because of systemic problems due to loan defaults on a domestic and global basis that brings the banking system to its knees and thus bring a ‘purge’ of the entire banking and economic system. Think about it, do we not all have children or grandchildren who ate so much candy that they eventually tossed their ‘cookies’ and the body purged itself of the excess. This very thing can and basically needs to happen to many civilized nations that have seen their markets for many asset classes’ become bubbles, thus for normality and ‘reset’ and ‘purging’ in the system to happen the bubbles need to burst. Have you noticed that the Corn market has shown an inexplicable strength for many months past harvest? This famous market is talking to us all and clearly showing that a kernel that can be eaten and also made into fuel [ethanol] is showing price strength that is likely foretelling that many other major commodity markets are likely go parabolic and rattle the price structures of the classic Midwest grain and cattle operations. If Corn and Cattle are key to your business then you’ll want to talk with us and see how to hedge and cross-hedge your asset classes’ on the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. There are ways for you to hedge some of your exposure without using futures contracts and taking on unlimited risk. Naturally there is and always will be risk of loss in Chicago grain and livestock markets, however, there are simple debit ‘fully paid for’ bull or bear call or put spreads that you pay for in full at inception and thereby eliminate the possibility of having a negative hedge account that leaves you owing money to a financial firm. Remember the old saying ‘Look before you Leap’? That’s what folks and ranches must do quickly and that educate yourself on hedging strategies before you ‘Leap’ and execute them in a hedge account.

Forged in Farmland – Fueled with Emotion! Farmland did not back down in 2021 and will continue with forward momentum in 2022. Iowa saw a significant increase in the number of acres sold this past year. Farmland values saw multiple auctions that set record prices in many counties. We continue to see a demand from both farmers and investors. Farmers had a blessing of good crops and significant incomes that came from 2021. If I had a crystal ball, I would look forward and tell you what land prices, interest rates, and the price of corn will be in 2022. You all know that I don’t have that crystal ball and as such we hedge on facts and data. The fact is that in 2021 we as an agricultural community showed the rest of the farming world that we would pay increasingly more for farmland than we have in the past. A perfect storm of factors brought us to that point. One farmland fact I know is that they are not making any more farmland and everyone I know with farmland wants more!

Ten Ways to Cut Cattle Feeding Costs

Several feed companies and veterinarians provide feedlot monitoring as a service. Feedlot monitoring software is available through Iowa State University Extension and commercial vendors. 2. Purchase cost. Purchase cost is often the largest single cost associated with a finished beef animal. Careful budgeting prior to purchase is extremely important in times of narrow margins. Good records of previous close-outs and past history of cattle from a source is useful in projecting cattle performance. Often the cheapest cattle may not be the most profitable depending on performance and efficiency. Use realistic cost and price projections when budgeting for new feeder cattle. Often periods of low prices and price volatility can create opportunities for the astute cattle buyer. 3. Feedbunk management. Managing feedbunks more closely can improve efficiency by reducing the incidence of low level acidosis on high grain rations. Using a bunk scoring system, or some method to reduce feed waste, can pay greater dividends during periods of high grain costs. An added benefit may be more consistent performance and better efficiency by eliminating the day-to-day variation in feed consumption. Recent research indicates that cattle that are slightly restricted (95 to 97 percent of full feed) will be more efficient. Good feedbunk management also includes proper feed mixing and accurate weighing of feed ingredients. This ensures that expensive nutrients will not be overfed, and reduces the risk of deficiencies. 4. Alternative feedstuffs. Many feeders are searching for alternatives to high priced corn. Several commodity feeds can partially substitute for corn. Your best bet is to look locally

Knowing current costs of production is essential to making timely marketing decisions and reducing corn use.

for feeds that may have a transportation cost advantage in your ration. Wet byproducts have a limited economical transportation range. Some examples of alternative feeds that may be available locally include corn gluten feed, distillers grains, corn screenings, off-grade or discounted corn, other grains (wheat, barley, rye, milo, oats), bakery byproducts, and others. Commodity feeds that may partially substitute for corn include hominy feed, fat, and wheat midds. Prices of these feeds tend to fluctuate with the corn and soybean meal market. Also, alternative feeds vary in nutritional content and may have practical feeding restrictions. Contact your nutritionist to help make decisions relative to the substitution of alternative feeds. 5. Feed an ionophore. Products like Bovatec, Cattylst, and Rumensin are ionophores. They will improve efficiency 4 to 10 percent, depending on the type of ration fed. As feed costs increase, the payback for improved efficiency is much greater.

6. Implants. Implants are another technology that improves efficiency. New implant technologies and strategies can improve efficiency 10 to 15 percent. Learn about the differences in implants and choose the one that matches your cattle and management. There may be tradeoffs in cattle weight and grade to consider when choosing the right implant strategy. 7. Marketing. Timely marketing can reduce the cost of production. It takes twice as much feed to put a pound of gain on a 1,300-pound animal as it does to put the same on a 900-pound animal. Marketing 50 pounds lighter can reduce the amount of corn needed to finish a steer by 6 to 7 bu. Consider the USDA Select discount when making this decision. Select carcasses are typically discounted more through the summer months. This makes high priced corn more valuable because it is necessary to increase the number of more valuable, USDA Choice carcasses. 8. Protein supplementation. Recent research at Iowa State University has shown that high performance cattle, aggressively implanted and managed to perform at high rates of gain respond to higher levels of protein (13 to 14 percent crude protein). Before adopting the recommendation to increase your protein levels to these higher rates, carefully evaluate the cattle and management to determine if a response in efficiency is expected. Even if it is, there is a cost to feeding higher levels of protein that increases as feed costs increase. Carefully weigh all supplement decisions, but be careful not to create a deficiency. 9. Mineral supplementation. Evaluate your mineral supplementation program. Are you feeding a protein supplement that is complete with minerals and supplementing minerals free choice? If your mineral is a free choice mineral, is it the right one? Phosphorous is one of the most expensive nutrients that is added to most mineral supplements. On a high-grain ration, supplemental phosphorous is likely not needed. Corn is a good source of phosphorous. Free choice mineral mixes or blocks for feedlot cattle should be high in calcium and low in phosphorous. 10. Do the little things. Basic management that requires little more than time can pay big rewards in improving efficiency when feed costs are high. These include routine water maintenance and cleaning, feeding cattle at the same time every day, handling cattle to reduce stress (including heat stress), and maintaining quality control on feed ingredients. n

Veronica Lents IOWA FOUNDATION HEIFER PROGRAM 2022 WINNER SELECTED Contributed by Norma Bolton for IBBC Heifer Project selection team

Veronica Lents, daughter of Kevin and Mallory Lents, of Creston, Iowa has recently been announced as the 2022 recipient of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award. As an award winner, she received three purebred Red Angus bred heifers which were purchased from Mike and Dianna Nolin’s Red Angus herd located at Monroe, Iowa. The foundation heifers of the breed of the winner’s choice are awarded each year by Iowa Beef Breeds Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of five years, Veronica will be expected to repay $6,000 to help with funding to keep the program going into the future.

The program is in year twelve and was developed to help youth establish purebred seedstock herds of their own. Veronica is a seventh-grade student at Mayflower Heritage Christian School in Creston and she is Nolin family members who met with Veronica involved with sports Lents and her dad, Kevin (on the right) when in the Creston Public they came to pick up the heifers. Middle School. She is an active member of her church and the Highland Highlights 4-H Club where she has been involved in a number of community service projects. In addition, she is a member of the Iowa Red Angus State Association and the National Red Angus Association. She shares her family’s love of the Red Angus breed and has shown not only at her local County Fair, but also at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa Red Angus Field Days and numerous IJBBA Jackpot shows. She has participated in contests such as: speech, livestock judging, cattlemen’s quiz, and salesmanship and has encouraged others to do the same. Veronica’s recommendations credit her with goals of striving for excellence, being a peer role model and having an outstanding work ethic. She is planning to learn more about genetics, breeding, feeding, grazing practices, budgets and promotion of the beef industry. She is not only a good showman but is also well versed in current beef industry issues. She will be honored at the Iowa Red Angus Association Banquet to be held on Saturday, February 12th at 7:00 pm during the Iowa Beef Expo and at the IJBBA Year End Awards held at 4:30 pm on Friday, February 18, 2022 in the Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. n

Both work day jobs but it’s not uncommon to go by their place and see them out well after dark rebedding the barn, checking pairs, or doing numerous other duties! They spend lunch breaks checking cows and weekends doing hay and other farm duties. I go to school in the daytime and do chores morning and night.” Whoa. I told her to go home and create a resume, and write down exactly what she had just told me. As a farm girl, one who has driven a tractor since she was 12, one who has cleaned out barns, scooped grain until her back ached, fed chickens, pigs, cattle and goats — this girl knows the meaning of work. She knows about dependability and getting jobs done on time. The morning school bus won’t wait until a farm kid finishes those chores. They’ll be done on time or the young student will miss that allimportant ride. A young person who has put up hay, helped her dad and mother in the farrowing house or candled eggs has something more than words to jot on a resume. Farm kids don’t need to take art appreciation classes in school. They witness picturesque landscapes, surprises and changes in seasons as they grow up. They ride horses, drive fourwheelers and neatly stack big hay bales at the edge of meadows. They fish in their ponds, learn to handle firearms and shoot deer,

When they raise and sell a 4-H calf, they can calculate the profit gained after deducting feed, vet medicines and other costs. They typically know how to stand on their own two feet and give project talks, or give oral reasons for judging a class of lambs or swine. Many of them earn leadership roles in church, 4-H or FFA, so they can moderate a meeting to perfection using Robert’s Rules of Order. They learn early in life the tactics of conservation — how to keep topsoil from washing out to the state located south of them; how to plant wind barriers and how to recognize grass-cheating weeds that need to be sprayed. Any farm kid can handle a paint brush, spade a garden, swing a hammer, pull worms from tomato plants, gather eggs, mow grass, groom animals and take one grain of wheat, bite down on it and determine if it’s time to start the combine. And, this girl thinks her resume might be lackluster? Oh, I don’t think so. Put her to work in a hardware store, newspaper office or grocery market, and she will enter the front door looking for things to do. It’s that way with young people who grow up as farm and ranch kids. Their resume is written on their foreheads and in their hearts. They should never apologize. Never. Joyce Eileen Williams was born August 5, 1941 in Adair County, IA to Wayne and Isal (Lake) Sheriff. She graduated from Zion High School and business college. She worked at the Green Valley Area Education Agency and developed many lifelong friendships. Joyce played a big part assisting with the Iowa Simmental Association, alongside her husband. After retirement, she thoroughly enjoyed serving on the Orient Library board. On December 20, 1959 Joyce united in marriage to her late husband, Harold Williams. Through their marriage, they lived in Creston, Des Moines and Greenfield. They made the move to their current farm in 1965. A highlight was building their house in 2012 and she had a complete joy doing the landscaping and flower gardens. Everyone that drove past their place couldn’t help but comment on its beauty. Growing up, Joyce was very active in all aspects of 4-H, from the homemaking projects to showing Hereford cattle. She showed cattle across the nation and told the story many times of hauling calves by rail to show in Chicago. She passed her love for these activities on to her children and grandchildren. Joyce was a fixture around every cattle and lamb showring that involved family or Simmental cattle. Following shows and Simmental activities, she took the opportunity to sightsee from Louisiana, Mississippi to Montana and many other places. Joyce was present at every basketball, baseball and softball game for her children and grandchildren. She was generally the silent one with gentle words of encouragement but never missed a game. Through those same years, she enjoyed playing cards with the same card club group for over 50 years. They traveled the United States and camped every year with this group and their families. Joyce and Harold also looked forward to an annual fishing trip to Canada with family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold and beloved granddaughter Sammi. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

ICA Members Create Roadmap for 2022 Management Agency regarding opportunities to suggest improvements to the rainfall index and grid system utilized for the Pasture, Rangeland, Forage and Annual Forage Programs. The Cattle Production Committee reaffirmed ICA’s support for several priorities, including: the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s premise identification system; and the need for a fair and competitive fed cattle marketplace. The Beef Products Committee voted to sunset the Beef Product Labeling Task Force directive and enacted new policy A BRIEF RECAP OF THE POLICY regarding country of origin labeling. In COMMITTEE MEETINGS The Business Issues Committee rec- November, producer members were surommended ratifying three new resolutions, veyed to gauge their opinions related to taking formal positions on rural broadband, country of origin labeling. The survey found climate change, and Waters of the U.S. that 86% of respondents would support manBryan Reed, of Monroe County, introduced datory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) a new directive for ICA to consult the Risk of beef if it did not violate trade obligations with Canada and Mexico. Furthermore, ICA would support the implementation of a WTO-compliant MCOOL for beef. The committee also ratified a new resolution: “Transparency in Labeling.” This resolution was first passed by the ICA Board of Directors as interim policy in July 2022. The recommendation to support USDA verification of source of origin claims and labels was brought forth by the Beef Product Labeling Task Force due to the misleading application of the “Product of the USA” label on imported beef.

Rouse Newest Member of ICA Hall of Fame The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) annually honors an individual who has contributed a great deal of time and effort in promoting the beef industry in Iowa. The 2021 Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame inductee was Dr. Gene Rouse, of Huxley, Iowa. Rouse ROUSE was nominated for this prestigious honor by our 2018 Hall of Fame inductee, Ed Greiman. Dr. Gene Rouse served in numerous positions during his employment with Iowa State University (ISU). He began working

for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, serving as Northwest Iowa Livestock Specialist before transitioning into State Feedlot Cattle Specialist. “He was highly regarded for his work with livestock producers, in helping them improve their livestock operations. Because of his effectiveness in working with the beef cattle industry, he was eventually moved to the Iowa State University campus to be a part of the Animal Science Department and strengthen the beef cattle breeding and genetics research program, as well as the beef cattle teaching program,” ISU Professor Emeritus Maynard Hogberg states. During his tenure at Iowa State, Dr. Rouse crossed paths with Doyle Wilson,

professor of animal science. In the late 1990s, they partnered to develop an ultrasound program that not only measured the ribeye area in live cattle, but the amount of marbling in the ribeye. “This was a game changer for the beef industry since, previously, marbling could only be measured on carcasses,” Professor Emeritus Hogberg says. “He and Dr. Wilson went on to develop a useful program of scanning live cattle to estimate carcass composition. This expanded to developing a national training and certification center that measured ribeye area, and then transmitting information into Expected Progeny Difference (EPDs).” Congratulations to Dr. Gene Rouse, our 2021 Hall of Fame inductee.

Mosher and Hurd Named Jayne Scholars The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation (ICF) recognized its 2020 and 2021 Jayne Scholars at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit in December. Maynard Jayne joined the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) in 1977 as a field representative. He then served as the director of legislative affairs, which included being the chief lobbyist for ICA in the Iowa State Legislature and its liaison to the congressional delegation until his retirement in 2006. Following his death in 2016, a scholarship endowment was set up in his honor through the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. Memorial gifts and a cash gift from Jayne’s family, including his wife Berdina and children Steve, Debbie and Jeff, completed a $50,000 endowment. The endowment provides for one $2,000 scholarship annually. “ The 2020 Jayne Scholar is Lauren

Mosher. Lauren is the daughter of Jim and Brenda Mosher, of Liscomb, Iowa. Lauren and her family manage a grain, cow/calf and small feedlot operation. She is majoring in Agricultural Education and Ag Communications at Iowa State University. While she has been at Iowa State, Lauren has remained active by participating in CALS, the Meats Judging Team, Collegiate Cattlemen and College of Ag and Life Sciences Council. MOSHER Lauren’s future plans revolve around her passion for promoting ag through her media business, Mosher Media, and growing her cattle herd. Eventually, she would like to return to the family farm to continue the family tradition of raising cattle.

The 2021 Jayne Scholar is Will Hurd. Will is the son of Andy and Lisa Hurd. Will’s family farms and operates a cow/calf and feedlot operation near Nemaha, Iowa. He is finishing his third year at Morningside University and has chosen Agribusiness and Agronomy as his majors. Will’s activities at Morningside include playing for the men’s basketball team, Morningside Ag Club, Morningside Garden Club, the “Into HURD the Night” volunteer program and Delta Tau Alpha Society. Will has been building a cow herd of his own through the years, and hopes to return to the family farm and continue to expand the operation.

I hope 2022 is treating everyone well! I received the cutest pictures of Quentin Long, otherwise known as Q, sporting his LPI hoodie in Denver. Long Simmentals are located only a couple miles away from us, but I have known the Williams/Long families my entire life. Over the past ten plus years, the Long kids; Tyler, Cody and Sammi, always conned me out of LPI swag. If one got something, you could bet I would be getting a text from the others asking when they could pick up theirs! Sammi and Cody were probably the biggest culprits. I absolutely loved seeing all of them in LPI shirts/hoodies over the years and now Q will probably be joining the “game” of getting LPI gear. Thing is, he’s so stinking cute he doesn’t have to try too hard to get it! I think Aunt Sammi would be so very proud Q! This year, for Christmas, I think Matt’s gift was a definite benefit for all of us! Santa brought him a Blackstone griddle with a hood! I will be the first to admit my husband is ultra talented with the smoker that we’ve had for years, but there is nothing like a burger and bacon on a griddle! So funny; Tucker devoured a double burger with jalapeño bacon and cheese and kept mumbling, with his mouth full, how it was for sure top five burgers in Iowa! So the jalapeño bacon we stole from Dad’s freezer. We found out later that he had gotten it from ChopLocal.com. He was scared to try it because he thought it would be too spicy but wowza it was absolutely fantastic!!
