Why use yardley Bulls

1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 51 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, I was perfectly satisfied with the weather in December. This cold weather and snow isn’t my idea of fun. If it would just stay in the 25 – 30 degree range at night and warm up to 34-40 degrees during the day until mid April, then straighten up and be nice in the 50’s and 60’s it would work into my program just fine. So far January, has been uneventful as far as my food critic thoughts. As I write this, I’m planning a trip to the milehigh city (Denver, Co) to attend the National Western Stock Show. I have high hopes that someone will be excited enough about a great place to eat that they will call and invite me to my next great dining experience. I also have visons of the great dining experiences at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. In the meantime, Dixie and I have been trying several different new things. kinds of 1things like10:28 fish; AM some grilled, some B&BDifferent Equipment:Layout 9/19/12 Page 1

baked, some marinated, all of which are pretty darn good. We have even tried different ways to stir up our taste buds on pork; grilled, baked in the oven, some Berkshire, some unknown, and all pretty darn tasty. A new experience for me was the preparation of some chicken legs. Let’s just say I kind of did ok, but I need some more education on that chicken stuff. Colonel Sanders still has a better idea on chicken. Now I know that we really like all of the above, but we still are stuck on the Prime Reserve and Choice Reserve beef that comes from the West Des Moines Hy Vee. Granted, it’s for special occasions because it isn’t cheap! It’s just so tender and almost always has such a great flavor that even I can’t mess it up. Our special occasions are the times that ol’ Mike decides he’s hungry for a good steak or when Dixie asks, do we have any of those good steaks left? Needless to say, we have lots of special occasions. If anybody knows of a place in Des Moines, Iowa or Kearney, Nebraska that is a little country, with a great atmosphere, and a deadly piece of meat, I’m intertested! Let me know. God Bless,

Men are not so much the keepers of herds as herds are the keepers of men. ~ Henry David Thoreau 4

NEWS RELEASE

Addison Wall IOWA FOUNDATION HEIFER PROGRAM 2020 WINNER SELECTED Contributed by Norma Bolton for IBBC Heifer Project selection team.

Addison Wall, daughter of Patrick and Amanda Wall, of Pleasantville, Iowa has been chosen as the 2020 recipient of three registered Hereford heifers awarded by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation.

Addison with the her three registered Hereford heifers

Initiated in an attempt to help young Iowans begin foundation beef herds, this is the tenth year of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program. Addison was chosen from a group of extremely well qualified applicants. She is a 7th grader at Pleasantville Middle School in Pleasantville, IA where she is active in dance and band. Addison lives with her parents and her 6 year old brother, Brody, on a farm near Pleasantville. She is currently serving as the president of the Marion County “Just Us” 4-H Club, showing both market beef and breeding beef projects and also participates in Quiz Bowl. Addison is a member of the Iowa Jr Hereford Association and has participated at county, state and national events. She won the Individual Sales competition at the Jr National Hereford Expo at the age of 11. Her recommendations describe her as a student with leadership qualities who is willing to volunteer and accept responsibilities at her school, community and church. She is a competitive, hard-working, enthusiastic young lady, willing to help others. Addison has already begun a freezer beef program called “Hereford Heritage Beef.” She has a passion for the cattle business and has chosen Herefords as her breed of choice. She is excited to begin her duties as the new owner of three Hereford heifers. Those heifers were purchased from Goehring Herefords (Bill and Becky Goehring, Libertyville, IA) by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of 5 years, when she graduates from high school, Addison will help further fund the project by contributing $6000. Addison and her family will be present on Monday night, February 10th, at the IA Beef Expo Annual Kick-off Party where she will be honored by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council as a future seed stock producer. The grand finale of the evening will be the presentation of the winners of the Friend of IA

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

The Power of Three Who knew when we first fed a calf or moved cows to the pasture or took hold of a lead rope that we were becoming part of an exciting multi-faceted industry. As individuals we were learning to care for our livestock and the resources needed to produce them. Our confidence in our abilities began to grow. We could now handle RICHARD GODFREY cattle, most of the ICA President time, and use our voice to promote the business. To increase the power of our commitment to the industry, we became members of local groups. These groups promote beef by serving their communities. Whether it be grilling at the football game, sponsoring cattle show awards, hosting urban groups or working at the fair, these groups multiply our voice to enhance the beef industry.

Our voice is further multiplied when we join state and national organizations. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association has become a collective group of individuals and county groups working to increase industry awareness. The mission of ICA is to grow Iowa’s beef business through advocacy, leadership and education. These three principles guide ICA’s commitment to all Iowa beef producers. A full-time presence at the state house monitors legislation and its effect on our business. Representatives engage at all levels to protect and promote opportunities to continue our operations. Programs to test breeding stock and carcass merit help educate us as producers. A concerted effort to contact and educate law makers and regulators at all levels has a stronger effect as a group. ICA determines the wants and needs of our members and leads the charge to get positive results. Our industry headquarters building houses three organizations to support our business. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s

Foundation all contribute to enhancing and building our tomorrows. Again to multiply and enhance our voice, we become members of NCBA. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, through its vision to be a trusted leader and definitive voice of the beef industry, works on our behalf to improve business climate and grow global demand for beef. Three ways each of us can and do work to improve our industry individually, locally and state and nationally; this is the power of three. As we welcome new members to our board, let us continue to work forward for all producers. There will be challenges to address and opportunities to pursue. The outcome of these endeavors will help to strengthen our industry. One more sincere thank you. Thanks to Past-President David Trowbridge for his efforts and leadership during his term as president. He has made the path forward clearer for all of us. Thanks again, Dave.

Beef Expo Listening Session Approximately 75% of Iowa Cattlemen’s Association producer members have a cow-calf operation, and your concerns matter! The input received from ICA members is what guides the association’s advocacy efforts throughout the year. For the first time, ICA will offer cow-calf and seedstock producers an opportunity to share their opinions at a Beef Expo Listening Session, which will be held at 9:00 am on Monday, February 10 in the Penningroth Media Center at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Attendees will get to hear a short update on the issues ICA has been working on including fake meat, environmental regulations and electronic logging devices. Following the update, producers can share their concerns with ICA staff and leaders. There is no need to RSVP for this event. If you can’t make it, feel free to contact ICA at any time, or visit us at our booth located outside the Penningroth Media Center.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA Sets 2020 Policy In December, Iowa cattlemen gathered at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit to determine policy priorities for 2020. ICA’s three policy committees each met to take up interim policies, discuss new policy ideas, and review resolutions and directives that were scheduled to sunset this year. The recommendations from the committees were presented and ratified the following day at the ICA Annual Meeting.

BUSINESS ISSUES In the Business Issues Committee, members supported new policy focused on amending the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Master Manual to restore flood prevention and protection of property as top priorities. This policy addressed concerns related to the regulation and management of the Missouri River, which remains top-ofmind for many of our producers who experienced flooding earlier this year. The Business Issues Committee also tackled anaerobic digestion and manure management best practices with policy recommendations supporting the research and development of anaerobic digestion systems and similar technology, equitable monetization of dairy and beef cattle manure, and stewardship of our resources.

CATTLE PRODUCTION The Cattle Production discussion began by reinstating current policy, including support for continuation of the 2019 Green/Gold Tag Task Force. The purpose of this task force is to assess the efficacy of the current preconditioned (green tag and gold tag) programs, while considering potential improvements.

Next, the discussion shifted to traceability. Per a directive, ICA has established a Traceability Task Force to weigh the pros and cons related to an animal disease traceability (ADT) system. Questions about technology, implementation, information management, and cost have been raised by members. The work of this task force will remain a priority for ICA due to rising concern surrounding foreign animal disease and potential for outbreaks. Most of the Cattle Production Committee meeting was focused on cattle marketing, and more specifically, market transparency and negotiated cash trade. The Feedlot Council, comprised of 9 active producer-members from across the state, have held numerous meetings this fall to address cattle marketing concerns of Iowa cattlemen. The Council came to a consensus on a few new policy proposals, which were ultimately introduced to membership at Leadership Summit. The first significant change included the introduction of a new directive to “examine programs that would provide an economic incentive for cash negotiated fed cattle sales.” Current ICA policy encourages membership as well as NCBA to require all major cattle feeding regions to market 50% of more of their cattle on negotiated cash trade, with the ultimate goal of increasing price discovery. While the Iowa/Minnesota region consistently trades over 50% negotiated cash, other regions, such as Texas/ New Mexico/Oklahoma, rarely break 10%. The second policy change focused on increasing transparency in formula transactions, specifically by changing Livestock Mandatory Reporting requirements. A third policy proposal supported adjust-

ment of reporting regions that are utilized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). The Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999 requires USDA AMS to publish mandatory data on meat and livestock price trends, contracts, and supply and demand conditions to provide market transparency to the public, all while protecting the identity and transactions of reporting entities. In order to maintain confidentiality for said entities, the Livestock Mandatory Reporting program uses a confidentiality rule related to the number of reporting entities, but some states/regions do not meet these parameters, and therefore do not report out to the public. To help address this issue and improve market transparency, ICA supports combining states in reporting regions. The fourth policy proposal supports an 11:00 am daily report from USDA-AMS providing the average carcass weight of cattle harvested the previous day. This policy reflects current reporting that occurs in the swine industry.

BEEF PRODUCTS The Beef Products Committee began by reinstating policies focused on food safety and consumer education. Members also brought forth discussion focused on Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL). ICA staff provided brief context regarding MCOOL and current ICA policy, which supports the repeal of MCOOL that occurred in 2015. This lively discussion ultimately led to a proposal to establish a directive for the ICA Board of Directors to develop a task force to assess the potential market impact of MCOOL.

On severely crusted snow, this doesn’t work as well, so I wait for a fresh spring snow rather than spreading seed on the full winter’s accumulation. Another reason to seed on snow cover is you can see where you’ve been. My preferred seeding method is with an electric broadcast seeder on an ATV. You can cover a lot of ground in a day at minimal cost. We generally figure a no-till drill costs about $15/acre for interseeding, while the ATV costs less Sire: Jindra Blackout • MGS: Koupals B & B Dante 2069 Sire: Koupal Czech 158 • MGS: Koupal Missing Link 836 Sire: ICC Pay Raise 4886 • MGS: E&B Final Answer 3126 than $1/acre. Applying soil nutrients If you took soil samples last fall and need to apply phosphorus (P), potassium (K) or other micronutrients, you can apply fertilizer as soon as the snow melts. In the wetter parts of the FYI U.S., spreading fertilizer with a bit of frost in the ground lets you cross ground that may be impassible a month later. But, don’t apply fertilizer with the ground frozen solid 1- to 2-ft. deep, due to the runoff risk. Apply after the main thaw, when a spring cold snap firms the surface again. What about applying N for spring pasture? I generally By Jim Gerrish don’t advise it on a large scale. Most graziers already have Published on too much spring pasture, and adding N just aggravates the www.beefmagazine.com problem. For a lot of folks, that 40-60 lbs. of N applied before Even if snow still covers your pastures, it’s time to think green-up translates to brush hogging a ton of wasted grass in about readying your pastures for spring. Spring is always July. Better to save the N application for later in the season, a busy season on the ranch, so it’s best to plan for where when it can help you grow grass when you really need it. you’re headed and what you need to get done. Here are If you need to jump-start some pasture for early grazing, some spring jobs to think about. consider using 30-40 lbs. of N on a third of your pastures. "Get Ready" continued from pg 28 can do a lot of soil damage. With the high cost of N, use it as a specific management tool, not a blanket treatment. Dragging pastures If you intend to drag pastures, do it as soon as the manure pats are no longer frozen. And, drag the pastures with the heaviest accumulation from winter grazing or hay feeding first. In mixed grass-legume pastures, there are lots of legume seeds in those piles waiting to germinate. If you drag early, more of those seeds will contact the soil, be more likely to germinate and help keep your legume stand going. If you wait until the manure pats are little green hills covered with clover seedlings, you destroy your seed bank. The rule with dragging is: “The earlier the better.” You need no reminder about the rest of the work. Elk smashed the fences, snowdrifts pulled wire off the posts, the undrained tank froze and broke. You cattlemen in the South, count your blessings now. Those of us in the North and West will count ours in the summertime! Jim Gerrish is a grazing management consultant based in May, ID, and former lead pasture researcher at the University of Missouri’s Forage Systems Research Center in Linneus. COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets

now the trade deal is out of the way and the potential demand from new exports to China might jolt the Cattle markets in a way that plunging weights might only do short-term. Bottom line? The next month or two look promising for the Cattle markets.

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

The trade deal with China labeled ‘Phase 1’ has finally been signed and now the reasonable hope of our USA is that China will honor the agreement, and most importantly honor the intellectual property aspects of the agreement. Naturally this ‘Phase 1’ trade deal now needs to breed ‘Phase 2’ trade deal by and between China and the USA. The USA exports of just about every cash commodity market suffered dramatically in 2019. Rest assured that Clinton, Bush and Obama combined could not have forced China to the negotiating table the way President Trump did. We are now seeing the benefit of having a businessman in the Oval Office in Washington D.C. Hopefully Mr. Trump will tap into the deep resources and skills of his cabinet to keep the U.S. economy and U.S. stock market on a steady to upward trajectory. Cattlemen should grin more than a little right now since the possibilities of expanding all aspects of the Cattle business by tapping into the vast resources and spending power of China and its consumers and investors. For example, the ability of Australia to keep supplying China at the same level or higher in the year or two ahead is not likely in light of the severe drought issues of Australia. Therefore, the timing of this reconciliation with China for trade purposes could not have come at a much better time. Remember a few years ago when President Trump won the election and spoke of the need for the U.S. Dollar to fall for export purposes? Look for this policy and strategy to come front and center for this election year. You can see in the Dollar chart below that the longer term ‘monthly’ trend line has actually already broken and we all should expect the Dollar to fall through February and March and into April or May and help facilitate achieving the higher inflation rates that the Federal Reserve is implicitly insistent upon.

The Cattle markets have been incredibly strong and resilient in price for a few months now and the remarkable thing about this fact is that weights have not dropped in a meaningful way. If by chance February and the beginning of March give us a weather market then Fat Cattle prices may surge up far more than most veterans think possible. Northern sale barns for the Feeder Cattle have been strong as an ox for some time now. Notice that in both Fat and Feeder Cattle market charts below that the long term trendlines have been broken to the upside and

However, you’ll also notice that the famous ‘Meat Spread’ is cheap, that being the Hog- Cattle Spread is dirt cheap and appears to have turned back up right as ‘Phase 1’ trade deal with China has been signed. Cattlemen can use this famous ‘Meat Spread’ to attempt to cross-hedge some of the risk of all the loads of Cattle you may have standing on the dirt. Educate yourself on livestock hedging and cross-hedging so that you can get your bankers on board too. Please call Michelle White here at the Fox Group at the Chicago Board of Trade and she will get more information to you on your smartphone or your computer in your ranch office.

Remember, it is important for Cattlemen to stay out in front of different unexplained drops in cash and board traded Cattle prices? Get in the rhythm of integrating wholesale beef and the values of your Cattle standing on the dirt and be ready to hedge when extreme overvaluations kick in on the Board and the

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the National Western this year. That is something that all of us involved in this industry love to go to and enjoy the comradery with other producers. I guess this year I have an excuse since stayed home and helped take care of our little man. It’s hard to believe that he is already four months old! I feel like it was just yesterday that I was informing you

all of his arrival. Tamar and I enjoyed our first Christmas as a family of three. It is a little more meaningful and we are both excited for him to experience it next year. It really is amazing at how fast they change and grow. He has certainly found his voice over the past month and likes to chime in frequently when his dad is on the phone! He’s also learned to roll over, so it’s only a matter of time until he’s crawling all over the house! Rather than going on and on about how he’s changed, I will just share a couple pictures with you all! Best of luck to everyone through calving and bull sale season! God Bless, Cody

As for cost, the BVCQ considers such things as purchase price, feed cost, salvage value and ultimate replacement cost. Likewise, McGrann developed the Herd Bull Investment and Cost Analysis2. It’s a decision aid that addresses comprehensive cost. On the other side of the ledger, expected calf revenue is based on weaning weight and price. Both of these aids provide results such as the annual service cost per cow and per calf weaned, as well as other met-

For the price, they’re also purchasing the warrantees and services provided by seedstock suppliers. Judging by the BEEF survey, though, buyers don’t expect many bells and whistles. Among services respondents say are important: assurance beyond the normal breeding guarantee (62%); herd visit and consulting (32%); being able to buy without attending a sale or visiting the supplier (26%); access to outcross genetics within the breed or composite offered (26%); free or subsidized trucking (25%); free or subsidized insurance to cover injuries for the first breeding season (17%); assistance marketing calves (16%); access to more than one breed or composite (13%). 1 Bull Value Cow-Q-Lator: https://farm.unl.edu/ beef#decision 2 Herd Bull Investment and Cost Analysis: https://agecoext.tamu.edu/resources/decisionaids/beef/ n

COMMENTARY

For Pete’s Sake by Anthony Peoples

Sale season is fast approaching and here’s to wishing everyone a great and safe spring sale season. Anticipation and expectations are high and rightfully so. There’s never been such an exciting time to be involved in agriculture! Sale books are being sent out and year long preparation is coming to a head! It’s going to be a great spring, full of meeting new friends and catching up with old ones! Spring is just around the corner and that means green grass and new opportunities. I have it on good authority that the turkeys are gobbling and that they are finding mushrooms just south of here. So, hang in there, we’ll be complaining about a different type of weather soon. Rumor has it that Mike Sorenson predicted that the Beef Expo will be so warm that he will be wearing shorts! If this happens – and you are attending any Beef Expo sales – do not forget your sunglasses! Remember to hold your hands high this spring, welcoming new ventures and opportunity. Always remember that you can’t make money with an empty wagon!

In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours. ~ Mark Twain 92

Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

Whitaker Marketing Group

Ready to SELL?

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

We can Help!

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com 2020 is upon us and 2019 was a heck of a year for farmland sales. We started the year off with a greater number of sales that 2018. The middle of year showed promise and the land sales came alive in the fourth quarter. There was a little under 95,000 acres sold this year. All year we saw a trend where farmers were on opposite ends of the spectrum. They were either very strong or walked a fine line in making it. Overall, the market was good with higher than expected yields. Age, industry, geography, cash, 1031, and banking/USDA all played a part in the buyer’s decision-making process. The market stayed very stable due to local buying power variability.

Iowa Land Guy

I predict that if interest rates rise, we will see the investor buyers back out of the land market. 2020 will be very similar to 2019 in terms of the market. I do not see land prices dropping in 2020.

We are your Total ESTATE Solution

If you’re selling or if you’re thinking of selling, make sure you look at the capital gains you will be responsible to pay. It is important to know your “basis” when it comes to trading farmland using a 1031. There are a lot of tools in our toolbox to help you with the tax implication when you sell.

David Whitaker Auctioneer/Broker

With the elections upon us and a strong economy the 2020 farmland market is in great shape!

So whether you wake up in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning and wonder about your Cattle and how you might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 and request a 90 day complimentary nightly and weekend Cattle Advisory that is delivered by email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. We provide Cattle hedging tutorials here at the Board of Trade and you can come in person on a Friday or Saturday morning or afternoon and educate yourself on the risk and rationale of Cattle hedging in a global economy that packers probably understand better than most cattlemen. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

A Cowman’s Best Friend at Calving Time!

5 Tips for Winter Cow Feeding Parameters for meeting cow herd protein and energy requirements vary, but all are important. By B. Lynn Gordon www.beefmagazine.com Along with the colder temperatures, snow, and other challenges that winter brings with its arrival, beef producers also face the task of determining how to utilize their forage resources best. “Supplementation of forages is a risk management tool for cattle producers trying to manage the risk of reproductive performance,” says Tryon Wickersham, animal nutritionist at Texas A&M University. Recently, during a webinar sponsored by NCBA, Wickersham addressed five areas important to understanding supplementation decisions when faced with low-quality winter forages and explained the importance of gathering relevant information about your cows and your forages. 1. Why supplement? “Supplementation is focused around sustaining or increasing body weight or body condition score (BCS) of the animal,” says Wickersham, “and this is most effectively done by enhancing the utilization of the forage resource available or replacing the forage resource.” He notes if cows come into the winter season with a lower-body

condition score, producers will want to add weight to allow the cow the best preparation for going into winter and preparing for spring calving. 2. Determine cost/revenue ratio It’s easy to want to offer supplementation for your cow herd, but doing so means added cost. “You can spend a lot of money to improve reproductive performance if that is a focus you want, but you need to calculate on a per cow basis, what the cost of supplementation is to achieve your goals,” says Wickersham. Producers should determine how much they can afford to spend to get the outcomes they are seeking or what would be the loss of revenue if they did not supplement. 3. Seasonality of energy requirements Matching the animal’s energy requirements to the timing of supplementation is a target to aim for, explains Wickersham. “A good measuring stick to remember is, energy requirements are highest during calving and early lactation, they fall off during the mid-lactation period and then begin to rise again after the cow is bred and moves into their first trimester.” Energy requirements increase before calving when the goal is to maintain BCS and often when forage quality is decreasing. Supplementation at this time can help to maintain BCS. Immediately after calving is often another time when supplementation may be considered. Energy needs of the animal are higher than forage resources allow during this period. Thus, supplementation provides the opportunity to balance out the gap in energy needs and resources. “However, if management prior to calving did not focus on maintaining BCS, doing so at this time is not as cost-effective.” 4. Identify forage quality “When supplementing protein, we want to try and be as close to the requirements as possible, and the way to do that is to conduct a forage test and look at how much you anticipate your cows will eat and require.” Wickersham explains if you go above the requirements you are spending money on protein that is not going to positively impact your returns. Forage testing will identify the quality parameters of crude protein and total digestible nutrients (TDN) in the forage resource producers are aiming to incorporate into the ration. When crude protein levels increase, intake levels off. “A rule of thumb is, when crude protein levels are 7% or higher in forages, supplementation will not be as effective.” TDN levels, which are an indicator of energy content, are difficult and more expensive to measure. Thus, he encourages producers to check with their local or state Extension service or grazing associations, as these organizations may have historical data on TDN levels for your geographical area. “If you are meeting a cow’s TDN requirements, you are usually meeting the cow’s protein requirements.” 5. Calculate forage quantity Track how much forage is available and how much the cows are willing to consume. For example, if you are feeding round bales of hay, counting and keeping track of how many bales you put out per cow will help in tracking consumption levels. “The more they eat, the more TDN they will get in their body and the more crude protein they will get.” With low-quality forages that are synonymous with winter, focusing on supplementation of protein “will allow for utilization of the forage resources available, give the greatest intake available, and overall result in the greatest intake of forage utilization.” B. Lynn Gordon is a freelance writer from Brookings, S.D.n

COMMENTARY

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

A few days before Christmas, I set out to finish up my Christmas shopping. When I say finish, I mean begin. My best friend and I had just sat down to grab a burger before braving the crowded department stores when his phone began to ring. I could tell by his face it was something serious but assumed it was business related as it usually is. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It was my buddy’s mom saying that his dad had suffered a heart attack. By the time we got to the hospital he was already through surgery and in a room. It was extremely tough to see him there, but he pulled through! He is and always has been one of the biggest hearted, toughest, hardest working men I have ever met. This man bought me my first steer when I was little and ignited a fire in me that hasn’t gone out. I will never be able to thank him enough for everything he has done for me. As the new year begins, and spring bull season approaches, I pray that everyone is healthy for safe travels and that everyone has success in their upcoming sales. Do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other LPI team members for assistance with your spring sale needs!

Such a bittersweet start to 2020. Such an incredible loss to not only her family, her community, but to an entire livestock industry! Miss Samantha Long, lovingly referred to as Sammi to most all that knew her, lost her life in a car accident just south of her home December 22, 2019. There are literally no words to describe the heartache felt, especially that reverberated across our state and even nation. Sammi showed on some of the biggest platforms across this great nation, but could make the kids in her little 4-H Club feel so incredibly special and supported.

yet. Be sure to stop by the LPI Booth at the Iowa Beef Expo! Tuck will more than likely be messing with the darn Rubik’s Cube that he is forever asking us to mess up so he can solve it again and again, or maybe you’d like to learn the latest from Taylor’s constant coaching of poor Miss Treva. Needless to say, with the Tibken crew there too, we might just be kind of entertaining or at the very least make ya feel a lot better about your own life! Please continue to keep our military, nation and leaders in your prayers. Also remember, just because we may not agree on every issue, it does not mean we have to be unkind. “We can only withstand life because we have a God who stands with us.” ~ Ann Voskamp Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com

I’m going to address the devastating, gut wrenching loss our family has felt from the loss of Sammi. Taylor, our ten year old daughter, got to finally show at our county fair this past summer. She found a great pic of Sammi watching her show her pigs with the biggest smile on her face. I can’t believe Taylor noticed Sammi ringside watching, but this picture speaks volumes to our family because THAT was Sammi! She encouraged the kids and would jump in and show swine, even though that was not a species she normally showed, and have the biggest smile on her face. In that same Sammi style she would support the kids ring side as well. That, my friends, is such a rare thing these days. It seems that everyone wants to win at any expense without caring about others. Here is what we need to remember always ... God has asked us to love one another! I pray my kids take that away from knowing Sammi; to live to do things out of their comfort zone and continue to support others along the way. Sammi Long, you have left a huge hole in our hearts and I pray that your hard work ethic and love of the livestock industry will leave a lasting impression on our kids, 4-H kids and all the kids across the nation that you have touched. Please continue to keep all of her family in your prayers, as they attempt a new normal with such an integral part of their family gone. Help us all continue to celebrate the life of such an amazing young lady. The Rohrig Family life continues to be a little crazy ... we finished Tucker’s 8th grade basketball before school was released for Christmas break, but picked up 3 hour drivers education courses every night, along with confirmation classes each week. Taylor’s dance classes are three days a week and Treva’s speech classes are two days a week. Some day I will miss all this running, I’ve been told. I think right now I’d love an evening or two off, but it’s probably not in the cards quite
