Why use yardley Bulls

1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 51 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

You just have to love Iowa weather! As Dad would say, “if you don’t like Iowa weather, just wait five minutes, it will change.” (slight exaggeration) In Iowa this last month I think we have had all four seasons in one month; winter, spring, fall, and darn near summer and now back to a winter weather advisory. The good thing is that we are a little closer to spring every day. The food report this month comes from my own Traeger grill and my grilling skills. I often plan our steak grilling for our noon meal. That is all due to maturity, digestion sometimes takes a pinch longer later in life and digestion does affect my sleep time. Two things affect my attitude, lack of food and lack of sleep, so I gauge accordingly to make both happen in a timely fashion. The Traeger grill is my kind of grill. It’s kind of fool proof. You turn it on, warm it up, season the steak with Jim Baldridge’s seasoning, put a steak on the grill, turn the steak in 10 minutes, come back in 10 minutes take it off, and eat it. I had a guy tell me once that most steaks are two drink steaks, you put the steak on, mix an adult beverage, drink it, turn the steak, mix another adult beverage, drink it and take the steak off the grill. Either I’m a slow drinker or my grill is hotter than his. It should be a one drink steak. Mix a drink, half way through the drink, turn the steak, drink the other half of your adult beverage, pull the steak off and eat it medium rare. Ok the steak, I got a new lead the other day on steaks. Champion Beef out of Creston, Iowa. A short 20 miles from my house. First of all the name just kind of caught me, Champion Beef, who wouldn’t want to eat Champion BEEF? Come to find out, that beef is conceived, born, fed, and processed in Union County. Weaver meats in Afton, Iowa processes the beef. To show you how popular this product is; I walk in to Weaver Meats, a young lady greets me with smiles, what can I get you? I told her I would like some Champion Beef please, I would like some bone in ribeyes, and possibly T-bones. A sad look came across her face, we are out

of both. She then went to the boss, the head Weaver guy came out, and explained that due to some adverse weather conditions (can you believe that in Iowa) they were a little behind, but explained the cattle were there, and meat would be available in 2 weeks. He then told me to go back to Creston Hy-Vee and they would have some in stock. So knowing that the supply was short, Dixie and I headed to Hy-Vee. Picked up more bone in ribeyes and T-bones. If these are as good as the first ones, Champion Beef will be a hit. Proper seasoning, foolproof grill, and a prefect Champion steak will happen. Congrats Chad, Dave, and Weaver Meat Processing. We have a big month ahead of us; Iowa Beef Expo, Illinois Beef Expo, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, and a whole host of sales in between. Please travel safe and prepare for lots of fun. Also, best of luck!!! PLEASE keep our political leaders in your thoughts and prayers so that they may lead our country in the proper direction. As always take time for thoughts and prayers for our military and their families, our freedom depends on them. God Bless

The Iowa Beef Expo runs February 10-17, 2019. The Expo offers the opportunity for beef producers to make purchases from a wide array of seed stock sales. A number of display pens, as well as equipment and new products in booths are available for perusal and purchase at this year’s expo. The weekends before and after the sales are devoted to the juniors. The weekend prior to the sales is a livestock judging contest for both college and high school livestock judging teams and a new-last-year BBQ competition with winners announced at noon on Sunday, February 10th. It will be held in conjunction with the Midwest BBQ Association and IA Beef Breeds Council. For rules, go to www.iowabeefexpo.com. The following weekend hosts the IJBBA premier junior cattle show of the year. Admission is free to an educational, once-a-year event. The potential of the cattle industry today is strong. Beef has always been the preferred protein source. Exports continue to grow around the world. There is something for everyone from the commercial to the purebred breeder. It is an event not to be missed. n

COMMENTARY

The Road Behind and Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

As this piece goes to publishing there are some serious fuses being lit that might just light up the livestock world in a very powerful way. What do we mean by that? Simple answer actually since the last hours and days and weeks have now turned the simple word ‘patience’ and ‘stimulus’ into viable very explosive gunpowder. First of all, both Federal Reserve Chairman Powell and Kansas City Fed President Esther George have both made it clear they are going to slow down this interest rate acceleration of the last year that helped the Dollar go up almost all of last year 2018. Secondly, China is now throwing around the word ‘stimulus’ and since China has had three times the annual economic growth of all other countries in the world, including our United States. And when China buys ‘stuff’ they really buy and dwarf that of other countries. You must know by now that US Treasury Secretary has now tossed onto the table that the U.S. may use ‘easing tariff’s’ as an arrow in the quiver. The ramifications of all of the above, from soft dollar policy inuendo to Chinese accommodation to U.S. trade ‘compromise’ are very dramatic and tell this team here in Chicago that this year might just be the year of commodities going north in a big way, from Cattle to Hogs to Grains. The winter rally is not showing power for the Feeder Cattle market just yet, however, it is on the Fat Cattle and there is little reason for it to stop until everything thaws out for good and Fat Cattle supplies swell. Demand will always trump supply if the demand is great enough and it has been for the last year in spite of the US Dollar’s relentless rally. Indeed, while the Copper market has struggled and not validated global pick-up and ‘commodity market’ demand and growth the Fat Cattle have set new 52 week highs many times the last few weeks and left Hogs and Grains in the dust. However, don’t count out Hogs and Grains. Just because they look like ‘road-kill’ does not mean they need to be buried and forgotten. History has proven that when markets are left for dead that they come to life and rip the head off the bears [shorts] that had a jaw locked down on them. Take a look at the sundry charts for perspective and then consult with your closest advisors and consider locking in your prices on key commodities that you will need to run your operation, from grain to energy to feed needs. If you wake up in the middle of the night and wonder about your Cattle and how you might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 or Matt Hamel at 312-756-0933 and request a 90 day complimentary nightly and weekend Cattle Advisory that is delivered by email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. We provide Cattle hedging tutorials here at the Board of Trade and you can come in person on a Friday or Saturday morning or afternoon and educate yourself on the risk and rational of Cattle hedging in a global economy that packers probably understand better than most cattlemen.

"Market Report" continued from pg 42 Again, look for the US Dollar to begin a serious sell off during the winter and some kind of reconciliation with China and commodity markets to light up.

And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

Weigh Pros and Cons of Fall Versus Spring Calving by: Darrell Rankins, Ph.D. Alabama Cooperative Ext. System Animal Scientist On numerous occasions the topic of calving in the fall versus calving in the spring has come up as a topic of discussion among cattlemen. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with each of them and as with most management decisions it becomes a matter of which fits your production scenario the best. Fall calving. Most cattlemen who utilize a fall calving season calve during the months of September through November. Ideally, the system would allow for the first calf heifers to calve in early September and then be followed by the mature cows that would finish calving by the end of November. The two main disadvantages of this system are that during calving season an adequate supply of good quality forage (pasture) is not available. Warm season forages have dramatically declined in quality by this time and cool season forages have not yet produced appreciable growth by this time of the

"Calving" continued from pg 44 year. The second factor that makes fall calving unattractive for some producers is the fact that you will need to feed a lactating cow a lot more feed during the winter than you will a pregnant, non lactating cow. The advantages of a fall calving season include the following: 1) The weather is generally mild during this time period. Most of the baby calves will be born during times of warm days and cool nights and relatively dry conditions. This type of weather is good for calf survivability and health. 2) In the spring when forages are abundant and the quality of those forages is excellent the calf has gotten old enough to spend an appreciable amount of time grazing and will have excellent weight gains as a consequence. This leads to heavier weaning weights of the calves compared to springborn calves of the same age. 3) It is quite common for a fall born calf to be sold as a weaned feeder calf in August of the following year. N A F Ten X 509 • RB Global 3300 Historically, calf prices tend to be relatively good during that time of the Leaders Pro Tour 62 • Leaders Fate 9 year. The disadvantages of this system include the following: 1) The PA Destination 6023 weather is generally more erratic durPA Scale House 517 ing this time period leading to slightly Leaders Trustworthy 6 more baby calf health problems. 2) Breeding season would be in late S A W Payweight 676 • PA New Day 635 April for the heifers and from late May *Bred Heifers bred to Carter Longevity 6347 through late July for the mature cows. In general, conception rates tend to be lower during extremely hot weather Gordon Leader: (402) 388-4949 which would be the case during July in Alabama. 3) Calves tend to have Mark Leader: (605) 660-1933 lower weaning weights when they 2 miles East of Crofton on Hwy 12 are weaned in the fall because forage quality and quantity are usually limiting during September and October. 4) Weaning and selling the spring born calf in October coincides with the historically low calf price of the year. Most calves in the U.S. are spring born, thus there are extremely large numbers of weaned calves being marketed during the fall of the year. A large supply equals a decreased demand which equates to lower prices. The main advantage of calving in the spring is that it allows the cow herd to get the vast majority of their nutrients from grazing forages and results in minimal feeding of both hay and supplement. It does not require a lot of high quality feed to winter a dry cow and when her nutrient demands peak (60 days after the calf is born) she has abundant amounts of lush, spring forage available. Take home message: Calving during the spring or fall can have both advantages and disadvantages. Like most management decisions it becomes a matter of what works best in your situation. The primary advantage of calving in the spring is that it requires considerably Carry out a random act of kindness, less supplemental feeding for the cow herd. The primary advantage with no expectation of reward, of calving in the fall is that you are able to market heavier calves the knowledge that one day someone might at a time when market prices tend to be a little higher. Either fall or spring calving is much better than year round calving. n

7 Common Cattle Fencing Mistakes Whether you’re an experienced hand or just learning the basics of wood, wire and tape, there’s always something more to learn when it comes to livestock fencing. Jim Gerrish, of American GrazingLands Services LLC, in May, Idaho, and Kevin Derynck, Gallagher territory manager based in Keystone, S.D., shared their thoughts on the seven most common cattle fencing mistakes. 1. Corner posts are undersized, or not deep enough This ranks as the top mistake in fencing, be it barbed, high-tensile wire or woven wire. The main issues are undersized posts and corner posts not set deeply enough, particularly in sandy or soft soils. Gerrish, who has clients in 43 states, says, “the depth in the ground should be equal to, or greater than, the height of the top wire.” Post diameter depends on the strength of the fence. Gerrish says the lightest-duty fence, such as a 1- or 2-wire, high-tensile pasture subdivision fence, only requires a 4- to 5-inch-diameter post. A 5-strand barbed wire fence, or 5- or 6-strand high-tensile wire fence, requires a 6- to 7-inch-diameter post. For net wire fences, Gerrish recommends an 8-inch-diameter post. How to fix it: Keeping corner posts in the ground is Derynck’s chief concern. He says a 10-foot brace is the ultimate, and he favors a “floating diagonal” bracing system, in which the angle brace is a 4-inch by 10-foot post notched a half-inch into the main corner post. The other end is set on top of the ground opposite the corner post. And he cautions against using drill stem – the metal pipe byproduct of oil wells – for corner bracing an electric fence. Unlike wood, it can conduct electricity and lessen the efficiency of the fence. 2. Post spacing is too close Fencers tend to use too many posts, which likely stems from people’s experience with barbed wire, where the rule of thumb was 1 post every rod length (16.5 feet). How to fix it: In an electric-fencing system, Derynck reccomends fence post spacing 80-100 feet apart, or about 50 posts per mile. He suggests using a “stay” – a shorter post that sits on top of the ground and holds wires up – if posts are spaced 100 ft. apart. Gerrish prefers his fence post spacing closer together, at 50-70 feet. 3. Using the wrong sized energizer Gerrish recommends 1 joule of output per mile of fence, regardless of how many strands of wire. If there’s a total of six miles of fence, it requires a minimum of a 6-joule energizer. How to fix it: Derynck, who represents Gallagher in Nebraska and the Dakotas, recommends a low-impedance energizer, with a low-amp fuse. “The larger the energizer, the smaller the voltage,” he says, because larger energizers are apt to power through more vegetation and short out. He considers 7,000-8,000 volts high for an energizer. 4. Ground rod is too close together Grounding is 99% of the electric fence, the specialists explain. Gerrish uses this rule of thumb: 3 feet of ground rods per joule of energizer output. So if the fence is using a 6-joule energizer, 18 feet of ground rods are called for. “Typically this would be three, 6-foot ground rods, spaced at least 10 feet apart,” Gerrish explains. How to fix it: Gerrish says spacing is key, as a ground rod is essentially an antenna receiving electrons flowing through the soil

90

Livestock Plus Inc.

and back to the energizer, completing the circuit. Ground rods can also interact with a given volume of soil. If three ground rods are driven into the ground 6 inches apart, in essence, they act as one ground rod because of the volume of soil they interact with. Derynck says most people insert three ground rods near the energizer. He encourages people to space ground rods throughout the whole network of fencing, particularly if the average rainfall of the fenced area is less than ideal for proper grounding. Galvanized rod is the best for ground rod, and most livestock fencing companies use an insulated galvanized lead-out wire on energizers. “Galvanized isn’t as expensive as copper and you don’t ever have to worry about corrosion,” Derynck says. If there’s galvanized wire in the electric fence system, keep everything galvanized. Derynck strictly recommends 12.5-gauge galvanized wire, galvanized ground rods and galvanized connections. “The most effective place for the ground system is in continuously damp, high-mineral soil,” he adds. 5. Don’t moose-proof; make fence wildlife friendly How to fix it: Rather than strive for a fence that’s elk and mooseproof, Gerrish suggests a flexible fence. When he moved to Idaho from Missouri, the fencing was high-tensile electric on T-posts, but the T-posts were being bent and insulators broken off due to wildlife. He replaced T-posts with PowerFlex fence posts and has had few problems since, he says. Another consideration is building a low-profile fence. On Gerrish’s 2-wire range fences, the top wire is at 30 inches and the second wire is at 20 inches. It’s designed to allow antelope to go under the wires at a dead run, but low enough that elk will hit the fence with their legs and not the heaviest part of their body. 6. Making gate openings carry current In an electric-fencing system, creating a gate system that conducts current is a challenge. How to fix it: Derynck recommends placing a floating diagonal brace on either side of the gate opening. To keep the fence “hot,” trench both insulated hot and cold galvanized wires 1- foot deep under the opening (perhaps deeper in high-traffic areas or low-lying wet spots, or shallower in less-used pasture settings). “The gate no longer needs to carry current, because you have your current going underneath the ground,” he says. 7. Relying on steel posts “Putting a steel post anywhere into an electric fence is a big mistake, because you are then relying on the insulator to keep your cattle fence from shorting out,” Gerrish says. How to fix it: Gerrish prefers highly flexible plastic or woodplastic composite posts, “No matter how good an insulator you get, eventually something’s going to break or pop off, and you have the potential for dead-shorting.” So in a nutshell, it breaks down to these seven tips if you want a reliable electric fence -- and that’s everyone’s goal, right? Corner posts are the correct placement and size. Fence posts need to spaced 50-100 feet apart. Using the right energizer; 1 joule of output per mile of fence. Space your ground rounds far enough apart. Make cattle fence flexible to be wildlife friendly. Creating a gate system that conducts current is a challenge, instead trench the fence underground. Don’t use steel posts, instead use flexible plastic or composite posts to prevent shorts. This article was written by Alaina Burt. Your Hereford Professional

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

Serving the Hereford breeders of the Upper Midwest Region

Anxious Animals Reducing Stress in Your Show Animals Your palms are sweaty and your mouth is dry. It’s your first time giving a speech in front of a crowd this big. You’re prepared, but your anxiety rises and your stomach flips and flops as you walk on the stage with all those spotlights shining on you! Or think about when you started a new school. Maybe it was a transition to Junior High or High School. Or even your first day of college classes. Will you go to the right room? Will you be on time? Will you have the right books and supplies? If the above scenarios sound familiar, imagine the stress your animal experiences as it makes its first appearance at a show. It can’t tell you, but chances are, it feels the same anxiety you might feel before giving a big speech or having an interview for a job or scholarship or even starting school. It’s up to you, its owner and the exhibitor, to look for signs and help prevent those stressful situations that might happen at your animal’s first show. What could possibly cause your livestock project to stress out? After all, those days and weeks of feeding, washing, skin and hair care and exercising at home have all been leading up to this moment – show time. But, up until now, your animal has been bedded in it’s nice climate-controlled barn under the fans with your favorite music in the background. If it’s a calf or hog you probably rinse it at least daily. A new environment with new smells, sounds, sights and bedding will add stress to your animal just like walking onto a stage or entering a new school will for you. Common causes of stress for animals going to a show include: a new environment with a greater temperature variance than they are used to, unfamiliar sounds and sights like strangers wanting to pet them; a change in their routine – both the times and ways they are fed and worked with; changes in their bedding and being in a show ring with unfamiliar animals instead of their barn mates from home. Additional stressors for cattle include being tied in all day in a small stall space to lay down and using a show halter on show day instead of a typical rope halter. Although “new” can be exciting, for our livestock companions “new” is usually nerve-wracking, causing the animals to go off feed and water and even acting anxious or less calm than they do at home. Here are some ways to eliminate the “first show” jitters and help you and your animals have a successful first trip out. 1 – Stick to your routine. If you have a set feeding schedule at

home, that shouldn’t change just because you are at a show. Just like humans, animals adjust to a schedule, and like the pattern of organization. If you have a pattern of how you do things – feed, exercise, rinse – at home, then keep that same pattern at the show. 2 – Keep the environment as much the “same” as you can. If you have your Hamp barrow penned next to Duroc barrow at home, pen them that way at the show. If you play music in the barn at home, play music at the barn at the show, if you are not breaking any show rules. If you can bed on bedding like what you use at home, use that, to keep the animal more comfortable. 3 – Introduce your animal to the show ring before show day. No matter how well prepared you are, show day is typically a little crazy. Take your animal into the show ring prior to show day. If you are showing a lamb or calf, practice leading and setting up your animal. If you are showing a hog, exercise it in the show ring so it is familiar with the surroundings. 4 – Keep your animals eating and drinking. Sometimes our nerves hit right to the bottoms of our stomach, making us lose our appetite, and our animals are no different. Even the healthiest of animals are prone to go off feed when met with the major stressors of a show. Using a daily supplement, like Sure Champ® Spark® with the Amaferm advantage is a great preventative measure and will keep them healthy and eating and drinking prior to show day. Amaferm®, a natural prebiotic that works within the rumen and/or gut to optimize digestive health and boost immunity. Prior to leaving for the show and during the show, administering Vita Charge® Paste or Liquid Boost® will help you protect your animal from the effects of show-day stress so they never miss a beat. Here are some great ways to use the Vita Charge products. 5 – Stay calm. Your animal can sense when you are nervous, and then they stress out too. You’ve worked hard to prepare for this show, and you are ready to shine. Take a deep breath, and stay calm. If you are calm and relaxed, your animal is more likely to stay calm and relaxed too. Follow these five simple tips to make sure your animals are as comfortable as possible during show day. If you are prepared, and they are prepared you have taken the first steps to #preptowin. Current FARMLAND Market

Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

State Trends ($/Acre)

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Farmland prices for the month December were stable, but fewer acres were sold compared to the previous month. Brokers and auctioneers selling farmland are not taking the risk of a no sale, so lesser quality farmland will be listed more often than taken to auction. Seller’s will list it for a designated price and then wait for the buyer. The highquality ground is still taken to auction as to realize the highest price. 2019 will be very similar to last year. Buyers will have a cautious but optimistic outlook. Look for a busy February and March. As farmers and bankers review the balance sheets we may see more land in smaller tracts hit the market. The farm bill has been approved and should take some of the questioning out of the market.

Members were asked if they agreed with the following statement: “The cattle industry should secure the broad adoption of individual animal ID disease traceability system(s) to equip the industry to effectively manage a disease outbreak while enhancing both domestic and global trust in U.S. beef.” Just over 74% agreed, and 26% said they did not, with most citing cost and government involvement as top concerns. These results and other findings from the survey will steer ICA’s work on policy topics throughout 2019. Each member’s feedback is appreciated and ICA staff invite all members to contact our office any time they would like to bring a topic to attention. February 2019

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Membership Benefits for Cow/Calf and Seedstock Producers The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) works to “Grow Iowa’s beef business through advocacy, leadership and education” through the collective investment of almost 10,000 members across the state. The cattle industry in Iowa is unique and diverse, and ICA strives to meet the needs of all sectors of the industry. From seedstock producers to commercial cow/ calf to backgrounders and feedlot operators, all of these members have a place at ICA’s table. Below you will find just a few of the programs and initiatives ICA has embarked upon to grow Iowa’s cow/calf and seedstock industries. These programs and priorities were developed by our members and for our members. Our volunteer board includes over 40 producers from across our state, and we are proud of our 97 county affiliates. ICA exists because of our members and their investment of membership and Fair Share dollars. If growing your beef business is your mission, join today and let us help. We can grow Iowa’s beef business together. And as always, if you have questions or would like to become more active in the association, we want to hear from you! Call 515-296-2266 or visit iacattlemen.org. ICA Sanctioned Preconditioned Sales A series of preconditioned feeder cattle sales are held in northwest Iowa every year, connecting quality cow/calf producers with buyers. Bull and Heifer Evaluation Program The ICA Bull and Heifer Evaluation Program (BHEP) celebrated more than 30 years of success recently, offering producers a chance to:

• Measure seedstock against contemporaries • Market seedstock at three ICA sales • Purchase performance tested bulls and replacement heifers to improve their herd Marketing: Advertising to nearly 10,000 Iowans in the beef business Seedstock producers can take advantage of several advertising opportunities for private treaty sales: • Iowa Cattleman monthly magazine and digital edition - circulation 10,000 • iacattlemen.org website ads • E-newsletter advertising Education As part of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association’s mission to grow Iowa’s beef business, educational opportunities are available throughout the year: • Cow/Calf Forums • Regional BeefMeets • Pasture Walks • Monthly magazine articles Grazing Management • Linda Shumate, ICA Grazing Advisor, helps producers improve their profitability and environmental sustainability through grazing management. • Stewards of the Land: The Stewards of the Land Program is intended to improve grazing practices in Iowa while simultaneously providing environmental benefits such as improved soil health and water quality. The program is grant funded by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) with additional support from the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation, and Prairie Creek Seed.

Policy The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is YOUR voice at our state and national capitols. ICA advocates to improve the regulatory and legislative conditions for cow/ calf and seedstock producers, focusing on: • Protecting the Iowa Fence Law • Regulation of Fake Meat • Rewriting EPA’s Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule • Increasing feeder cattle price reporting • Reducing competition for grazing land through changes to the Conservation Reserve Program Research ICA is active in research and problem solving related to the seedstock and cow/ calf industry, including: • A Cow/Calf Council that serves as an advisory committee to ICA policy commitees, board of directors and staff • A Green/Gold Tag Task Force that seeks to improve the state of Iowa’s preconditioned programs • Collaborative work with the USDA to improve feeder cattle price reporting and the feeder cattle index, maximizing profits for cow/calf producers • Support for forage experiments and inclusion of pasture and cow/calf producers in the improvement of Iowa’s water quality • Active participation in the Iowa Livestock Health Advisory Council at Iowa State University

SYMBOL OF

BULL

&

HEIFER

EVALUATION

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association bull and heifer evaluation program serves the needs of both the cattle seedstock producers and producers with commercial cow-calf herds. The program, which has been in place since 1985, provides seedstock producers comparison and bench marking information. The cow-calf producer benefits include access to superior genetics for their herd to enhance their bottom line.

Bulls and heifers must meet strict selection criteria to be eligible for one of three ICA sales. The bulls are evaluated for carcass merit, reproductive soundness, structural correctness, disposition and growth. The top 75% of the evaluated bulls and heifers in each breed that meet the criteria earn ICA’s ‘Symbol of Excellence’ and are sold at the sales.

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

I hope everyone has survived this crazy winter weather over the past month! It has been awhile since we have had this much snow here in Illinois. Makes us have to work a little harder to keep everything fed and bedded. Unfortunately for me, this year I was not able to attend the National Western. That is one thing I always enjoy. I hope everyone that was able to attend, enjoyed their time there and to everyone that exhibited, I hope it went well and some of your stock sold well! It sounds like this is the last year for those facilities. I hate to see the history behind those yards go, but it will be fun to see what they can do to improve them and everyone’s experience at the stock show. Best of luck to everyone getting ready for their bull sale. I know this can be a very busy and sometimes overwhelming time during preparation. I look forward to working with many of you in marketing your bulls in the next few months. That is all I have for now, but stay tuned as I have some exciting news for all of you in the next couple months! God Bless, Cody

I hope you all can visualize this scenario and giggle like I did. Taylor, our middle child, always loves to go do chores with her Dad. You have to keep in mind, I married a man like my father. Matt loves the kids dearly but when he’s working on the farm he gets very focused and doesn’t talk much, except to yell every once in a while. I adore my daughter but she sometimes asks the most random, crazy questions that actually require contemplation and deep thinking at the most inopportune times. As these two were choring one evening, Matt said she was beebopping behind him trying to keep up, all the while firing questions at him the entire time. Matt said he stopped and said, “Tay you ask a lot of questions!” She said without missing a beat, “Yeah I’m pretty questionable!” Matt said he chuckled and paused to look at her, trying to keep a straight face. She said, “Oh yeah I didn’t say that right, did I?!” We had to explain the difference between being questionable and being inquisitive. To say the least, Taylor is definitely inquisitive! Tucker is a typical 13 year old. He is always right and he’ll remind you too... you don’t even have to ask! You’ll have to ask

Matt about his funny Tuck stories from their trip delivering bred females. Taylor thought she was funny because while they drove 18 hours, us girls were assisting bred females at home delivering babies ... so we were both “delivering!” With all the craziness of the Big T’s, Miss Treva has been doing awesome and walking so much! The kids still try to count her steps to get her longest jaunt. I guess whatever makes them happy! Tuck and Tay continue to push Treva to be HER best! I hope we get to see some of you at THE Iowa Beef Expo and possibly even the Illinois Beef Expo! Ronette Heinrich, I’d love to come out to Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic but I don’t think Randy Rasby will allow me in his territory! All joking aside, these are some incredible events that y’all need to make time to attend! The kids and I will be at Iowa Beef Expo the majority of the time, so please stop by and chat! I plan to keep Kim Tibken at our booth with her computer designing ads, too! CONTEST ... Stop by the booth or text/email us ... “HOW HAS LPI AFFECTED YOUR LIFE?” You’ll be entered to win a new LPI hoodie!
