MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, By the time you are reading this, Christmas will be history, and 2019 will shortly follow in the history books. We hope that you all had a great Christmas and Santa Claus was good to you. It’s our hope that 2020 will be great for all of us in the Ag industry. Let’s talk food. We are like every other family at Thanksgiving, we end up with enough food to feed a large army and we just have a small army. I’m just like everyone else, I have my favorite foods, and the whole family has their own specialties they prepare. Of course, most of those dishes fit into my favorite foods category. Heidi makes a salad that sure looks healthy and tastes great along with what I call a giant cookie with whip cream and lots of chopped up fruit on top. Mandi is the tator and sweet tator girl, and cooked up a darn good ham. Runt (Maria), my favorite daughter-in-law, up 1some devB&B Equipment:Layout 1 9/19/12 10:28 whips AM Page

iled eggs, and another healthy RANDY RASBY ~ SALES salad that is awesome. Then from 308-539-6195 the lady of the house, or as I rrasasoc@gpcom.net refer to her; my bride or the wardepartment, prepares corn, smoked turkey, dressing, relish tray, and a whole host of other food, desserts and drinks. Then comes one of my favorites, my son-in-law Matt, the pig guy. He brings in this pork loin HEIDI ROHRIG ~ SALES that is one great piece of pork. 661-900-6004 I’m not sure what he does to it. heidi@livestockplusinc.com He says that if he tells me, he will have to dispose of me! As long as he stays in the family and brings the pork loin, I don’t need to know how he does it. This pork loin is juicy, tender, and flavorful and is CODY CRUM ~ SALES as good of meat as you can find 217.248.7282 for at least for my taste buds. This codycrum@live.com was only a quick look at my favorites from the Thanksgiving dinner because I usually report on what I like. Thanks to all my kids, their spouses, and grandkids for making Thanksgiving special for Dixie ANTHONY PEOPLES and me. I’m patiently waiting for 660-651-6501 what’s in store for Christmas dinapeoples02@gmail.com ner! All of us at Livestock Plus want to wish you a very Happy New Year. We hope 2020 is a great year!!! Take a minute over the holiERIC LEE days and include our military and 608-295-5312 their families in your prayers. gileecc@yahoo.com

Dream it. Wish it. Do it. Success doesn't just find you, you have to go out and get it!

Protected Processing! -

A Cowman’s Best Friend at Calving Time!

Gerald Weigel, KS - “Once we catch the calf in the catcher, we tag the calf and move the pairs to the new pasture. If you have an aggressive/ protective mother cow, you are safe within the catcher. I would guess that the catcher saved me at least 10 times this year alone.”

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

History appears to have been made this last 6 to 8 weeks when the Choice Box Beef market went down like a rock for days and weeks and yet the Fat Cattle market did not budge. This kind of massive divergence between Live Cattle and Dressed Steer and the Boxes’ is telling livestock veterans that the Fat Cattle must be in bigger more protracted bull market than anyone thought. Add in to this foregoing backdrop that the Federal Reserve Chairman made it clear that the Fed is resolved to get higher inflation rates. Generations gone by surely would wonder why we would want our children and grandchildren to experience inflation that reduces purchasing power of the US Dollar. However, the 22 trillion dollar debt of the United States will likely have to be monetized and reduced through inflationary paper maneuvers. So while the inflation of the new year 2020 and maybe beyond will likely hurt future generation and force husband and wife to work to maintain some semblance of normal purchasing power, current generation Cattlemen may see a very Happy New Year with substantially higher Cattle prices. Add into this equation that trade deals with Mexico, Canada and China are in the works and livestock markets and the meat thereof could go up beyond reasonable imagination. The Federal Reserve Chairman did remind the world on this last Fed meeting of 2019 that ‘household spending’ is strong even as manufacturing seems weak Some wise old timers on Wall Street think the 35 year bull market in U.S. Treasury Bonds is over and that as the U.S. has to issue ‘sell’ billions and trillions of dollars of new Bonds to help fund trillion dollar annual deficit that interest rates will slowly move higher and that Bond prices will sink. If indeed Bonds sink under this pressure of US Bond supplies and or that US Treasuries start sliding under the weight of inflation desired by Central Bankers around the world then we might just see a new bull market in key commodity markets such as Cattle and Hogs. The US Treasury Bond market will be an important market for Cattle producers to monitor week to week and month to

month since the Bond market never lies and the strength of the Bond market for the last year or two has reflected poor manufacturing and low levels of inflation. We can reasonably expect that inflation will rear its ugly head against purchasing power of hard working folks who live on a paycheck and nothing more. However, Cattle producers may get the last laugh on the inflation monster due to higher Cattle prices, providing the cost of gain does not accelerate out of control and offset the higher prices for Cattle sold. You’ll see down below in the new charts that Gann lines above the current market prices on the charts implies that there is substantial potential on the upside in Cattle prices. However, the livestock business has turned more than one prince into a pauper so risk of loss of primary capital must be monitored like a hawk.

nothing to keep America’s economic interests first. Trump means business and you have to respect that and Trump went toe to toe with China and did not flinch and Phase One of the Trade Deal appears to have been done at this write. Time will tell who the real winner of the trade war. Let’s hope the livestock industry survives and prospers in a greater way long term to make any gains of the trade war good salve for the ‘financial injuries’ experienced on international meat trade. So how do Cattlemen stay out in front of different unexplained drops in cash and board traded Cattle prices day to day and week to week? Get in the rhythm of integrating wholesale beef and the values of your Cattle standing on the dirt and be ready to hedge when extreme overvaluations kick in on the Board and the Dressed Choice Steers and the Choice Box so that when solid ‘lock-in per head’ prices line up with overvaluation on Dressed Steers that you know how to use the It does look the ‘Happy New Year’ greetings you have Board to execute the Board or like-kind forward contracts. recently received may come to fruition and that you’ll want Whether you wake up in the middle of the night or first thing to make sure to see all the ducks line up at the Sale Barn, the in the morning and wonder about your cattle and how you Chicago Cattle markets on the Board, and USDA wholesale might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets beef markets before you hedge large amounts of Cattle during then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 and request a 90 early winter. Success of past graduates from the Hoover Angus February Production Sales!

Hoover No Doubt: No Doubt progeny have met the market’s demands for width of base, superior feet, and sound skeletons with reallife performance that is not just genomic based. The following programs have sold No Doubt progeny at these levels: Baldridge Bros. $170,000 and $110,000; Spruce Mountain $75,000 and $50,000; Connealy Angus $70,000, and $30,000, Linz Heritage Angus $60,000 and $20,000. A son was the Champion and $30,000 co-top-selling bull in history at the 2019 Cal Poly Bull Test. Three of the top 5 selling bulls in our 2019 sale, all over $25,000, were sired by No Doubt.

Hoover Dam: As of his passing in 2019, 233,396 units of semen were sold or used by Hoover Dam’s owners and 15,406 A.I. certificates were sold to gross $5,131,015. Although there are no official public records with which to compare, Dick Beck, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at ORIgen says, “Hoover Dam is the only sire in history owned exclusively by Angus breeders to have ever reached or surpassed that sales total.” Being used in a multitude of different environments including four continents, Hoover Dam has established a reputation for calving ease, muscle, docility, improved foot structure, and exceptional maternal strength.

Miss Blackcap Ellston J2: J2 sold for $20,000 in our 2011 auction, and then at 7 years of age sold 1/2 interest for $150,000! She has generated over one quarter million dollars in revenue for her owners in the last two years. Daughters of J2 have sold for $70,000, $27,500, and a flush from a third daughter at $24,000. J2 has brought recognition to her owners by putting their programs at the forefront of the breed.

Hoover Know How: The current rising star of the Hoover program, his first daughter will sell in the 2020 Bases Loaded Sale in Denver by Teixeira Cattle Co. This No Doubt son boasts a +322 $C for his superior combination of economically important traits. He sires sharp-looking progeny with a big hip, sound structure, and excellent thickness. Know How’s cow family will have the largest influence of any cow family in our February 4th sale.

Hoover Counselor N29: N29 originally sold through the 2015 Hoover sale for $23,000 to Steve Borns. In the Borns dispersal sale in 2017, N29 was purchased by Select Sires for $39,000 as a semi-proven bull! N29 is from the famous Erica cow family that has already put 8 sons in 6 different AI studs. This outcross pedigree bull sires calving ease cattle with solid carcass merit and balanced EPD profiles. This Erica cow family will have a significant impact in our February 4th sale.

Current FARMLAND Market Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

State Trends ($/Acre)

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Merry Christmas! November was a good month for harvest and a great month for auctions. I have seen some reports from Realtors saying land prices were down and others saying land prices where up. Well, the numbers don’t lie. Prices are trending upward for the month of November. We personally have seen some outstanding prices at auction. Location and quality are everything in the current market. Example: We saw a farm south of Webster City, Iowa No Sale for a top bid of $3500/acre. In the same week we saw a farm in Story County bring $12,600/acre. Not all farms are created equal! If I could give you one line to remember it would be this, “Good farms sell good. Bad farms sell bad.” If you have an 80 plus CSR score and the ground is square, flat and located next to some bigger operators, your farm will sell well. If your land has a mixture of pasture, tillable, and recreational ground, and the tillable acres are separated with a host of trees and point rows, your farm will be a tougher sale.

Iowa Land Guy

Just like every year, the greatest number of auctions and acres are sold in November. There was a large amount of land that hit the market this November. We were watching to see if the market would hold strong with the amount of land changing hands. We are happy to report that the land market is strong, and we don’t see it going down anytime soon. Most farmers gained good yields this fall. These surprise yields and low interest rates are creating a buying opportunity, and it is showing in the land prices. Results from the 162 Sales (16,829 acres) this last month have the average high quality ground at $9,194/acre. Medium quality ground averaging $6,512/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,920/acre.

As 2019 comes to a close, I am going to send it out with yet another first, writing a column for a livestock publication! If you were to tell my high school English teachers that I would be doing this, they would laugh you out of the school. It has definitely been an interesting year. From the logistics of relocating, to the wet hay season, and harvest, it has been a challenging yet rewarding year. It has been great teaming up with the Huisheere family and raising cattle on my own again. When I began the moving process in the beginning of the summer, I really had no clue which direction I was going to go, I just knew that I was ready for a fresh start. Little did I know that I would end up with a position at LPI and find yet another facet of the livestock industry that I would love! The welcoming and support I have received from Mike and the entire LPI family has been second to none. Moving forward into 2020, I am looking forward to working with producers both new and old. Be sure to contact me or any of the great LPI team with your livestock marketing needs. May God bless your families and friends in the new year to come!

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

The Real Marketing Edible Artificials Truthfully (MEAT) Act of 2019 ICA and NCBA applaud the bipartisan Real MEAT Act of 2019, which was introduced in October. The Problem: In recent years, ultra-processed alternative protein products have begun to proliferate the marketplace. These products “bleed” like real meat, “sizzle” like real meat, and are being marketed to real meat eaters under the guise that these products are more than just an imitation, they are a superior replacement to real meat products. Rather than empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions by way of accurate and truthful labeling, a growing number of imitation products are relying on clever marketing campaigns and flagrantly deceptive labeling practices as a means of growing their market share. The Real Meat Act will: 1. Codify the Definition of Beef a. Establish a federal definition of beef that applies to food labels b. Preserve the Congressional Intent of the Beef Promotion and Research Act 2. Reduce Consumer Confusion a. FDA has misbranding provisions for false or misleading labels b. Prevent further consumer confusion with alternative protein products c. Clarify the imitation nature of these alternative protein products 3. Enforce the Law a. FDA will have to notify USDA if an imitation meat product is determined to be misbranded b. If FDA fails to undertake enforcement within 30 days of notifying USDA, Secretary of Agriculture is granted authority to seek enforcement action

THE SOLUTION PART 1

Codify the Definition of Beef The Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 recognized the importance of U.S. beef production to the American economy and defined the terms “beef” and “beef products” as part of an effort to strengthen the beef industry’s position in both domestic and foreign markets. While these definitions were codified in 1985, they are not applicable for labeling purposes. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) regulates meat labeling and enforces the law’s misbranding provisions in two important ways 1) a mandatory labeling preapproval process and 2) the Agency’s Food Standards and Labeling Policy Book, which offers guidance to ensure product labels are truthful and not misleading. The FSIS Labeling Policy Book defines certain terms and sets specific product ingredient parameters, but to date, the term “beef” is what’s referred to as a “common or usual name.”

THE SOLUTION PART 2:

Reduce Consumer Confusion Over the years, there has been a tremendous change in the types of food products available to the American consumer, as well as some significant changes in the way food products are packaged and marketed. As new iterations of imitation meat products enter the market, data indicates that there is considerable consumer confusion surrounding these products. When choosing between real meat and imitation meat, both of which are in the meat case, most consumers don’t realize that these products are regulated by two different government agencies and are held to different standards.

In a recent nationwide survey conducted by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, 55% did not understand that “plant-based beef” was an entirely vegan or vegetarian product. Further, when asked to compare plant-based meat to real beef, a majority of respondents believed plantbased meat products were healthier, more natural, less processed, lower in sodium, and better for the environment. A quick look at the ingredient labels indicate that those are false beliefs.

THE SOLUTION PART 3:

Enforce the Law The FDA does not pre-approve food product labels, but rather, seeks enforcement action after a product has already entered the market and the damage has already been done. The Real MEAT Act addresses this issue by closing the regulatory gap that exists between USDA and FDA. If enacted, FDA will be required to notify USDA immediately, in writing, whenever the Agency determines that an imitation meat food product is legally misbranded or if said product’s labeling or marketing is misleading to consumers. After 30 days of receipt of notification, should FDA fail to initiate formal or informal enforcement proceedings, the Secretary of Agriculture is granted the authority to seek enforcement action. Conclusion: The Real Meat Act will be a strong signal to the FDA that the labeling of food products must be honest and accurate. The enforcement of truthful labeling will encourage fair and honest competition in the marketplace and benefit consumers. Consumers will be ensured that the labels they see in the grocery stores are a truthful representation of the product.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

This Great Industry By David Trowbridge Well, it is time to write this last column. Seems like just a few months ago I started this honor of being the president of this association. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that the members of the cattle industry in Iowa would honor me to be in this position. I have been humbled by the help, advice and input that all the cattlemen across this great state have offered me. Nothing that has been accomplished over the last two years has been done without the input and support of all the volunteer leaders that make up the board of direc-

ture is up to each of us. In a world where the consumer is so disconnected from the concept of food production, each of us must be that connection. Our involvement must be that of the authoritative influencer at every level of contact with consumers. We, as an industry, have many internal disagreements about almost every issue facing us, good or bad. We can not allow these differences to become divisive and give our opposition a wedge to divide us. Whether we agree or disagree, first and foremost is the health, profitability and image of our industry.

Together, we are the true heart of America. We face our hardships with a grit that only a heartfelt passion for faith, family, community, and our way of life can instill.

tors and all the committees that create and complete policy. Without the support of all these leaders, the momentum to make ICA a powerful association to influence the legislation that will influence the growth of our industry on a state and national level could not have been achieved. I can only hope that some of you found my column motivating or thought provoking. I have tried to write from my sense of motivation or inspiration that the current events or issues have brought to my attention. The future of our industry is one that hinges on our individual involvement. Whether, as an industry, we prosper or fall victim to the opposition to animal agricul-

The opposition is well funded, well organized and united. We are underfunded, disorganized and diverse. That is why being involved and active within an association of producers is the most effective way that we as individuals can unite and influence the issues that face our industry. We will never agree on 100% of the policies and procedures to confront these issues, not within our association and certainly not with the fragmented associations representing our industry. Without the power of numbers and consensus our industry will be ill represented. That is why whether you agree or disagree your voice must be heard. Once we are all heard, a united voice

of authoritative influence must be projected from our industry to the consumer. I feel we have made some progress in this area lately on a national level with some legislative proposals. I am a believer in this great industry because of the people involved. We are made up of leaders who do great things and get recognized for their work. We are individuals who work behind the scenes every day to improve this industry - salesmen, industry representatives, marketers, consultants, bankers, farmers, educators, researchers and so many more that build the infrastructure that supports all of us. Together, we are the true heart of America. We face our hardships with a grit that only a heartfelt passion for faith, family, community, and our way of life can instill. We have done great things and great things will be done by future generations that we instill with this same passion. One last thing before I go, the state of Iowa has produced many great people and it is always sad to lose one of them. We lost a true statesman for the cattle industry when Gene Wiese passed away. I had the honor of being on the selection committee when Gene was place in the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame. All of us who had the honor and true pleasure of calling Gene and his family friends, offer our condolences to his family. Although the passing of a great leader is always a lose for all of us, the celebration of Gene’s life, accomplishments, influences and family will be a continuing legacy for Iowa’s cattle industry.

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

2019 was a year that many of us would like to forget. Mother nature came at us hard and our industry went through some really tough times. But, we are resilient and won’t give up. The new year always brings a lot of excitement to our industry. Calving season and the new baby calves that we put so much time and thought into planning will soon be here. The National Western Stock Show is right around the corner and right after that, bull sale season will be in full go! I encourage everyone to look at 2020 with a positive outlook. Not just regarding our livestock industry, but also with our country in mind. We all see this negativity the media puts in front of us daily, but we all know how and why our country is so GREAT! Let’s keep working together to provide our next generation not only a great livestock industry but a country that will provide them the opportunity that with a little hard work, their future is limitless. I pray that the good Lord will provide all of you with a very successful 2020. Happy New Year and God Bless, Cody

So, at the Rohrig house, we do not love flu season! I feel like I’ve already used 5 tubs of Clorox wipes and I get slightly crazed trying to keep everyone/everything clean! Our youngest daughter, Treva, has a compromised immune system due to her Downs Syndrome, so my level of “crazy” with keeping her healthy has officially hit a whole new level. My fear of another hospital stay keeps me pretty motivated. Lately, Taylor, our middle daughter, has been pretend playing with Treva and her babies (Cabbage Patch dolls). I hadn’t realized just how much she picks up from all of us until I sat back and observed one day. We are still working hard on Treva’s verbal skills, but let’s just say she completely understands everything we say. One of my favorites is when Treva gives one baby to Tay and Taylor will stand and sway, cradling the baby, rocking back and forth while singing. Now Treva’s version of swaying and rocking with the baby includes the baby being in a head lock while she sways, you have to remember she legit thinks she is doing exactly what Taylor is doing and it’s so funny. What could be my very favorite of their little routine is when Treva kisses her babies’ heads and tucks them in Taylor’s bed to go night-night, because she folds her hands and prays with the dolls, too. That one melts my heart! Treva likes copying mom as well, while working on selling ads from my home office, I tend to be on the phone and I pace back and forth through the house as I talk. That being said, I turned around to find Treva cradling the phone between her ear and shoulder while holding her baby and pacing around the living room. I was just happy she didn’t “yell” at the baby, too! Now when Dad and Treva are home alone together, it’s ALWAYS a treat to see what Daddy will let her wear! After substitute teaching in preschool the other day, I came home to Treva having two different colored flowers in her hair, pink pearls, a glitter bracelet, and a pajama top the same color as her pants. She was thrilled with her new style that she created, and to tell ya the truth, I think her Dad was too! She kept looking at herself in the mirror to admire her accomplishment. Daddy thinks it’s pretty cute to watch her get so excited looking at all her pretties in the mirror. Tucker will be finishing up his split season of 8th grade basketball by the new year and then starting drivers education! So, by Iowa Beef Expo time, I hope we are wrapping up drivers ed and maybe I’ll have a driver a few of those days of Expo. Well, only IF my nerves can handle it! May God’s Blessings touch everyone in the New Year! Please continue to hold our military and nation in your prayers. Heidi Sorensen Rohrig heidi@livestockplusinc.com 661-900-6004
