For nearly a year our state has been in the grips of the worst drought on record. We have hoped, prayed, begged, and bargained with the Good Lord for moisture.

Knowing that the moisture would be Mother Nature’s elixir for our livelihoods. Early this morning I witnessed something else that could be considered liquid magic provided by Mother Nature.

We had an eight year old cow calve in the early evening in the calving lot. The temperature was about 40 degrees. Figuring that the cow had done this before, we didn’t worry too much about her not getting to work and getting the calf going. During my routine check of the calving lot later I found that the calf had never gotten up and nursed. For whatever reason, he had played out and was chilled and lethargic. I got him into the calving shed, and worked to get him to his feet. Finally I headed home and got the calf bottle, the drench tube and whatever else I thought I might need. My husband Clint came along to help me out. We put the cow in the head catch and Clint milked about just a pint into the bottle. The calf drank the bottle dry and began to get to his feet. That colostrum proved to be the calf’s elixir, the magic that jump started his engine.

It is wonderful when everything works as it should.

The bull sale season for Nebraska Angus Association members has gotten underway. Sale reports are good despite the increased cost of feed this winter…it proves that the cattle producers are finding the

bulls that move their herds forward. We have a few additions to our sale calendar in this issue as members continue to schedule their sale dates this spring.

The Cattlemen’s Classic angus show and sale is scheduled for Feb 21, 2013 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. President Speaks Greetings Cattlemen, What an exciting time of year by: Clayton Glause, NAA President

for cattlemen around the country as several are well into calving season and anticipating the process of evaluating last spring's breeding decisions. It is always interesting to see how those calves develop in the coming months into what we hope will reach our intended breeding goals.

January was a treat for my family as Amy and I took our four children to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. The weather was beautiful during the week for the Angus shows and sales, and we enjoyed all of the cattle displays and surrounding activities. I always take pleasure in visiting with so many Angus breeders from around the country and many of our Nebraska producers. Nebraska was well represented in Denver and our producers should be proud of their accomplishments. They all did a fantastic job of displaying and showing top notch Angus cattle.

Nebraska is one of the nation’s leading producers of Angus genetics, and many of our members have had a significant influence on that standing. With that said, I encourage anyone interested in learning more about the Nebraska Angus Association to visit with myself, Suzy Hebbert, or any board members about the benefits of membership. What a great way to network your operation and build friendships with so many others who share many of the same interests!

It is now the beginning of February and thus far our winter has been mild with very little snow fall…… Great for calving, but heavily weighing on many producer’s minds concerning the moisture shortage and its impact on the existing feed situation. Nebraska Angus Association binar this past week in which it was stated that Nebraska and Wyoming are now officially in the midst of the most severe drought on record.

I believe we have all been impacted, so I commend the producers who have already made many resourceful & difficult decisions during the past year to manage their operation during the pending drought. I hope and pray for the much needed moisture as we move forward.

The Cattlemen’s Classic is coming up in three weeks and there is continued enthusiasm for the Angus breed show & sale again this year. It appears that numbers are up from last year. I invite you to attend and see what several of our state’s breeders have to offer.

Furthermore, I look forward to the bull sale season that is already underway. Early sale reports would indicate another year of solid demand for Angus cattle. If you are in search of Angus genetics, I invite you to check out the Sale Listing Calendar on page 26.

2013 looks like another strong Angus year. Anyone that attended the National Western Stock Show should have been encouraged by the amount of “Angus Fever” that was evident. Congratulations to those Nebraska Angus breeders that fared well in the shows and sales at the events in Denver.

I hope that you all took note of the new pricing of the genomic DNA tests by Pfizer and Igenity. Hopefully this makes this option of identifying genetics more affordable to producers. It reiterates to me the value of open competition. In my opinion, fair and open market competition always benefits producers and consumers.

Feb. 19th through the 21st I will be attending the February American Angus Association board of directors meeting. If any Nebraska Angus breeders have comments or concerns or want something

$B improves carcass, feedlot traits

By Miranda Reiman To make more money, try selecting for profit. That’s what dollarvalue indexes help cattle producers do.

“It’s probably the easiest way to practice multiple-trait selection,” says Megan Rolf, Oklahoma State University animal scientist. “It’s also a pretty easy way to select for profit, because we’re talking in terms of economic values, so they either have profit or savings associated with them.”

Commercial cattlemen who want to produce standouts in the feedlot and on the rail should look to the dollar-beef ($B) index, offered by the American Angus Association.

“It’s designed to aid in genetic decisions for post-weaning merit and carcass value,” says Sally Northcutt, genetic research director for the Association.

An updated technical summary shows the dramatic difference in progeny harvested 1997 through 2012, sired by bulls in the top 10% compared to the bottom tenth among registered Angus sires (see table).

“Selection of breeding stock based on a single trait is risky, as progress may come at the expense of others,” the Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) “Black Ink Basics” tech sheet says. “Using the breed’s top 10% of beef-value sires can produce calve with higher quality premiums, lower yield-grade discounts and better feedlot performance.”

It shows data to back that claim: Progeny from high $B sires had five times more Prime grading carcasses, while Standard carcasses were cut by almost two-thirds, compared to low $B progeny. Certified Angus Beef ® brand qualifiers increased more than 28 percentage points.

“People will ask the question,” Northcutt says, “can I really realize this difference in the feedlot and on the rail?” The top-vs.-bottom 10% comparison illustrates what’s possible.

Quality grade is not the only place the top group won out. High $B progeny had a 67-pound carcass weight advantage over low $B calves.

Coupled with the grid premiums, that adds up to a $168.02 per-head advantage for the top group.

“The underlying economic assumptions are based on a three-year rolling average that represents the commercial cattle industry,” Northcutt says.

Improvements in Angus genetics, along with stronger grid signals, contributed to an $85-increase in the spread between the two groups, compared to a previous analysis in 2006.

“Quality has value in the industry and pounds have value,” Northcutt says.

In order to use an index properly, it’s important to know which traits are included, Rolf says.

“You want to select for the highest index values and limit the use of additional EPDs (expected progeny differences),” she says. “Otherwise if you’re using something like dollar-beef that already includes yearling weight and you also select for a higher yearling weight EPD, you place too much emphasis on yearling weight.

The exceptions are EPDs that could help you set needed limits for environment or ones that are not included in the index. For example, maternal traits should be included in selection decisions if replacement heifers are being kept, because having females that produce live calves and breed back needs to be a key consideration of any ranch.

“The dollar-beef index does not have any maternal components or calving ease,” Northcutt notes, recommending the dollar-weaning ($W) calculation as the “best kept secret for all producers.”

That includes traits like mature size and milk, calving ease and a cow’s energy requirements. The tech summary notes the higher $B sires also had improved $W values, showing that both goals can be reached in tandem, she says.

“But dollar-beef isn’t just for those producers focused on retaining ownership. Those who sell at weaning still need to keep it in mind for the big picture of the industry,” Northcutt says.

She recommends Angus bull buyers visit the Sire Selector on the Angus website (http://www.angus.org/Nce/SireSummarySearchCriteria.aspx) to search for animals that fit their criteria. It allows producers to enter minimum and maximum values for all 24 measured EPDs and dollar-value indexes.

“If you’ve already used registered Angus bulls on your cows, then you can use their EPDs as a benchmark of genetic values. You can use them as a conservative starting point,” Northcutt says. “The hardest part is to sit down at the kitchen table and think about the goals and opportunities you’d like to seek out. What’s the directional change I want to make?”

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight iss Nebraska Angus 2012-2013

North Platte, Nebraska is home to this year’s Miss Nebraska Angus, Aliesha Dethlefs. She is the daughter of Craig and Laurie Dethlefs and Grand daughter of Ken “Dutch” & Marian Dethlefs of Ravenna.

Aliesha is a busy teen, participating in many activities. She is on the cheer leading squad at Hershey High School and runs on the Cross Country team. She’s a member of the state qualifying Hershey High Panthers girls basketball team and participates in track too. She also is involved in One Act and Speech teams. She attends Confirmation class and Youth Group and is involved in Community of Faith activities.

Classroom subjects that are favorites include any of the science classes especially chemistry, anatomy and biology.

A fourth generation Angus breeder, Aliesha has grown up around cattle and has been exposed to the Angus breed all her life. She says being around cattle is what makes her who she is. She is always eager to attend a new Angus show and meet new people.

Being involved in the National Junior Angus and Nebraska Junior Angus Associations has allowed her to learn more about the breed that is such a big part of her life.

She has attended both the Nebraska State Junior Angus Show and National Junior Angus Show since 2005.

supporter, mentor and teacher about Angus cattle and encouraging her to show cattle. Laurie, her Mom is office manager at the vet clinic when she isn’t helping Aliesha’s sisters Emily and Kacey.

Emily is a sophomore at Hershey High School and Kacey is in the 4th

grade.

Emily also enjoys going to cattle shows and Kacey is very excited to be starting her show career.

Aliesha has always admired the girl in the Angus crown. Her Aunt, Pamela Dethlefs was the Angus Princess in 1979. That admiration is what inspired her to run for Nebraska Angus Queen. She feels it is another way a Junior member can represent their breed and educate others. She is passionate about the Junior Angus Association and what it can offer its members beside learning to show cattle.

Other Junior Angus contests that she has participated in include Posters, Public Speaking, Livestock Judging, Quiz Bowl, CAB Cookoff, Extemporaneous Speaking and the Mentoring program.

She is currently Secretary/Treasurer of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association.

Aliesha’s future goals as Jr. Angus member include learning more about the Angus breed and passing that knowledge onto others. This includes working towards becoming a member of the National Junior Angus Board of Directors. That goal to become a Board member goes hand in hand with her chosen major following her 2013 high school graduation. Aliesha had been accepted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall of 2013 where she has signed on to major in Ag Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations. She would also like to explore Communication Studies and work with graphic design.

Advice that Aliesha would offer to future Nebraska Angus Queens is to “Be Confident! It might seem frightening at times being in front of so many people, but they don’t always have eyes in your direction”. She added, “.You are not only representing the state of Nebraska, but also the Angus breed.
