20 years ago, in Stockton-on-Tees, three teenagers heard sounds coming from the backroom of a pub. They went in and heard people singing unfamiliar songs – songs without instruments, in their own accents, about places they knew. Folk songs. They joined in. Because they were the youngest ones there, they were soon labelled ‘the Young’uns.’ Now, they’ve performed around the world, won three BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and gained a reputation for singing life-affirming songs in immaculate three-part harmony.
Mary Coughlan is often described as Ireland’s greatest female vocalist, standing alongside some of the world’s most iconic jazz singers. She is unique in blending whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. Yet Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting.
Highly acclaimed American songwriter Joan As Police Woman returns, performing songs from throughout her career and new music too. Her twelfth studio album, Lemons, Limes, and Orchids, is a showcase of Joan’s metamorphic voice, carried by her piano and strings, complemented by Meshell Ndegeocello on bass, Chris Bruce on guitar, Daniel Mintseris on keys, and Parker Kindred and Otto Hauser on drums. The record is about love and loss, part hymn to holding on and part benediction of letting go.

A note from Liverpool Philharmonic
After 16 years of incredible leadership, this March we say farewell to our Chief Executive Michael Eakin. On his retirement, he shares a message with our Liverpool Philharmonic audiences…
Dear Friends
As I prepare to step down from my role as Chief Executive, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your support, trust, and passion for music that has made my job so wonderful.
I am especially proud of In Harmony Liverpool which began in 2009 (the same year I started) with a group of 84 children. This life-changing project now reaches over 1,790 young people every week in Anfield and Everton.
As I say goodbye, please consider making a donation to In Harmony and help us to continue to expand the project and reach more children and young people across the city.
While my journey with Liverpool Philharmonic may be coming to an end, I will always remain one of its biggest supporters.
With heartfelt thanks,

Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.1
Dvořák Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’
Erina Yashima conductor
Anna Tsybuleva piano
Some pieces are classics for a reason – and let’s face it, when it comes to Dvořák’s New World symphony it’s been a long time since the Hovis ad! This great symphony of exile, hope and nostalgia has been touching hearts since 1893. Shostakovich’s uproarious Piano Concerto is a bit newer, and Anna Tsybuleva makes it sparkle tonight. First, though, guest conductor Erina Yashima shares a piece of pure magic from a young Dutch composer with a huge imagination.

Dvořák Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’

Anna Tsybuleva piano
All the right notes in rather more than just the right order! Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of those pieces that absolutely everyone knows. The real skill is making it sound as fresh as new – and when the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Anna Tsybuleva joins forces with guest conductor Erina Yashima, we think the results will be magical. As for Humperdinck’s fairytale prelude and Dvořák’s New World symphony…well, enough said, really. It’s just tune after tune after tune.

Set in 14th-century Genoa, Simon Boccanegra is a gripping story of political intrigue and personal tragedy. At its core is a decadeslong feud between political rivals: Simon Boccanegra, former pirate and man of the people, and Jacopo Fiesco, a leading member of the nobility. But these enemies are bound together by the strongest of family ties: one is the father and the other the grandfather of the same woman, Amelia. With music full of dark-hued grandeur and excitement, Opera North’s first ever performances of Simon Boccanegra follow their acclaimed concert stagings of large-scale Italian classics such as Turandot and Aida. It promises to be an unmissable event.
Sung in Italian with English titles.

Roberto Sierra Fandangos
Elgar Cello Concerto
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances
Domingo Hindoyan conductor
Pablo Ferrández cello
There’s rhythm in the air, and it’s not just confined to Roberto Sierra’s toe-tapping Fandangos. It’s the driving force behind the nostalgic melodies of Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances – the sound of a Russian composer stranded in Centerport, New York, and amid the freeways and palm trees of 1940s California. In between, Pablo Ferrández summons up the quiet power and deep poetry of Elgar’s hugely popular Cello Concerto. “A star in the making” says one critic: we say he’s already up there!
From the most delicate of musical miniatures, to the full splendour of Walton’s Crown Imperial, there’s nothing that can’t be played on a great organ. And there’s no organist alive who knows the Philharmonic Hall organ better than Liverpool Cathedral and City Organist Ian Tracey.

Grace-Evangeline Mason THE HART for soprano and orchestra (world premiere)
Mahler Symphony No.4
Ryan Wigglesworth conductor

There’s nothing the human voice can’t do. In Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, it paints a picture of heaven at the end of a journey through blue skies, summer storms and shining mountain peaks. Meanwhile, Grace-Evangeline Mason’s exciting new piece has been created especially for our soloist Sophie Bevan, a soprano with a voice of pure gold. Strauss’ Don Juan kicks things off in truly swashbuckling style.
Haydn never had a pupil quite as unruly as the young Beethoven – but then, he didn’t mind breaking the odd rule himself! The Bromborough Quartet plays favourite quartets by each composer – music packed with warmth, melody and quite irresistible wit.

Benjamin Appl baritone
James Baillieu piano
“His singing reached so many people and he touched their hearts with the art of song. For me he was more than just a teacher. Thank you, Dieter.” Benjamin Appl
For millions, the German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (19252012) was one of the greatest singers of modern times. But for Artist in Residence Benjamin Appl he was a hero, a mentor, and – above all – a friend. Crafted from Appl’s personal memories, and incorporating letters, readings and anecdotes from Fischer-Dieskau’s incredible career, this is a song recital with an extraordinary difference: an intensely personal tribute from a brilliant young singer to the artist who changed his life.

Joined by ladies from Liverpool Welsh Choral, there will be up to 150 performers involved in the performance!
