The celebrated architect, artist and designer took a new direction when he designed a house in the Childwall countryside. Augustus Pugin (1812 – 1852) is regarded as one of the greatest Victorians who influenced many others during his short life. He is known as the Father of the English Arts and Crafts movement. From 1836 Pugin advocated the Gothic Revival style, calling for a return to the positive aspects of the Middle Ages – strong faith and tight social structures – which created a blueprint for the Victorian age.
Pugin designed and refurbished churches throughout Britain and created many of the decorations and statues in the Houses of Parliament. Wealthy timber merchant and shipowner Henry Sharples decided to build an impressive new residence in Woolton Road. Pugin was commissioned to design Oswaldcroft (pictured) and its entrance lodge between 1845 and 1847. The new house rang the changes from previous Pugin designs – the plan was less square in shape than earlier works. continued on page 2

continued from page 1 Significantly, at Oswaldcroft Pugin developed his pinwheel concept – rooms radiating from a central staircase. This helped change the course of domestic architecture. Oswaldcroft also featured innovations in its external decorations. As with some of his commissions, Pugin also designed
furniture for Henry’s new home. He created an amazing cabinet based on cupboards that once graced colourful royal courts in the 15th century. Each door is decorated with the Sharples badge featuring a crescent moon. The cabinet, now in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, was
carved by George Myers – a hugely-talented craftsman who became known as Pugin’s Builder.

London’s Victoria and Albert Museum has a collection of 11 Pugin drawings s h o w i n g Oswaldcroft fittings and furniture including the Indianapolis cabinet.
Pugin was married three times. At just 20, he was left a widower with a daughter after his first wife died in childbirth. He went on to father six more children by subsequent wives.

Oswaldcroft was extended in 1866 – the new work was designed by Augustus’ son
Edward Pugin. It is a rare surviving example of Edward’s domestic work. Corncrake House stood on Score Lane, the unmade road gated to keep livestock from wandering. It was 1927 and cars had trouble negotiating the lane. It made the isolation even more intense. Dorothy stood like a statue on the roof. There was a cool breeze wafting up from the valley. She was flushed from her exertions and delighted in the sensual feel of the gentle wind on her naked arms and legs. An owl flew above, passing before the full moon like a swooping ghost. The distant bark of a fox briefly broke the silence. Dorothy revelled in the bliss of the moment – she felt so alive, every sinew of her lithe body tingling with pleasurable sensations. She opened her eyes wide to
absorb what she called her Night Kingdom. Suddenly she felt something was missing and this sensation grew as she carefully climbed down the stairs to rejoin her unconscious sisters in the huge communal bedroom. The 19-year-old lay awake, sleep evading her. The following day she was strangely silent and over the next week was unable to make any nocturnal visits to the tower because of poor weather. Dorothy, while helping her mother sort out the contents of one of the unused rooms, found a beautiful veil spread out in a trunk. It had been worn by her deeply unpleasant grandmother when she married all those years ago in Childwall Church. Dorothy furtively rolled up the veil and hid it away. She was fascinated by the fine, transparent silk as soft as gossamer. It felt like a soft breeze as she ran it through her fingers.

At last Dorothy stood quivering in her favourite place and slowly – nervously – put on the veil. At first the sensation was intoxicating, like a hundred tiny hands stroking her hot
face. This was the greatest-ever feeling of untrammelled, unconfined joy. Then all changed. A horrible toothless hag was staring at her through the veil, her deep-set eyes blazing. “Take it off!” the crone screamed. This is the second part to “motivation”, the first part b e i n g “beliefs”, which was last month’s topic. To value something means to place importance upon it; anything you hold dear can be called a value. So when you and I make a decision, what are some of the states and

When I have asked a client about the feelings that are most important for them in their lives, they’ll respond with words like success, freedom, intimacy, security, adventure, power, comfort and health. There are some emotional states that you’ll do more to achieve than others so therefore you don’t value them equally.
Take a moment and make a list of some of the things you value most. What did you learn from doing this? If your number one values are passion, adventure and power, I know you are going to make different decisions than someone whose top values are security , comfort, intimacy and health. While you have ‘moving toward’ values, you also have ‘moving away’ from values. How many of you have ever done public speaking? I know the first time I did a presentation in front of a group of business leaders, I was quite nervous but there are many people out there who won’t dare to do any kind of public speaking. Maybe they have a fear of failure, rejection or humiliation. As well as these three emotions, there are others; rejection, anger, frustration, loneliness, depression, failure, humiliation, guilt, confrontation etc. Take a moment now and make a list of some of the emotions you like to avoid. What does this tell you? Now that you have made a list of your ‘moving toward’ and ‘moving away’ values, does this give you an idea of why you do what you do? For example, if your number one ‘moving toward’ value is adventure and your number one ‘moving away’ value is fear, you may think twice

GUNPOWDER, TREASON AND PLOT By Stephen Guy It was 1605 and all England was agog with news of the plot to blow up Parliament, King James I and his Lords and MPs. Revenge was swift and Guy Fawkes and his fellow Catholic plotters were executed in the most barbaric manner – hung, drawn and quartered. This meant they were hanged and, while, still alive, chopped up and their heads and body parts displayed on pikes as a warning to others. All had actively planned the horrific deaths of the Protestant king in an act of outrageous terrorism. It was only
through the vigilance of the authorities that Fawkes was spotted before he could light the fuse to ignite the pile of gunpowderfilled barrels under Westminster . This is why we still celebrate the foiling of the plot on 5 November every year by burning and effigy of Guy Fawkes. In 1605 the area that is now south Liverpool was very different from today. It was still partly ancient forest that was gradually being cleared to make way for farmland. Tiny Liverpool ’s seven streets were dominated by an ancient castle. A track led
through the trees south to Speke Hall. Just one building is said to have stood along the way – and still stands – the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth. Visitors to Speke Hall are always fascinated by the priests’ hiding places. In 1605 the Hall was occupied by a Catholic family, the Norrises. As followers of the old faith, they had to pay fines for not attending Church of England services. These fines accelerated the financial decline of the Norris family. Thomas Norris inherited the Hall in 1651 and was the first Protestant head of the family,
However, he was a Royalist and was on the losing side in the Civil War when puritan Roundheads (Republicans) fought Cavalier dandies (Royalists). The Norris estates were confiscated and not regained until Charles II – the Merry Monarch – was restored to the throne amid national rejoicing after the miserable years of the Commonwealth (Republic) when even dancing was banned. ALDER FC: FIRST TEAM POISED by Peter Harrison 1A combination of a bye in the cup and a blank weekend has seen only one first team fixture played since my last report, and that was a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Pinewoods. Despite a John Elias penalty, the team conceded in the last quarter of the game, but are still handily placed fourth in the league to make a push for promotion. The second team are finding life difficult in the second division of the Liverpool Premier League. Despite two goals from Anthony Wong and a single from Tommy Owen
they were defeated 73 by Wood Street and also suffered a 6-2 defeat to leaders The Famous Grapes, with Anthony Barnes on the scoresheet. The third team have settled into their stride and are nicely placed fifth in the league. After suffering a 3-0 defeat to Old Xavs, they showed resilience with a solid 1-1 draw against Leyfield, with Corro on the score sheet. broke into the Hale box and hit a sweet right-footed drive just inside the left-hand post to open the scoring. Six minutes later he was involved in an altercation with a Hale player which saw both of them go into the referee’s notebook and soon after that sloppy defensive work let Hale through to level the scores. The score-line remained the same until just before half-time when the Hale goalkeeper felled the Stoneycroft attacker, who was about to round him,
to concede a penalty and earn himself a yellow card. Mike Kinney netted from the ensuing penalty kick to put his side in front going into the break. Ten minutes into the second half Adam Beckett hit a superb twenty yard drive into the roof of the Hale net to make it three for the home side. Fifteen minutes later Mick Gough, making his debut for the Croft, latched on to a loose pass to break through and coolly side-foot the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to make it four. The
visitors were trying hard to get back into the game but they were now up against a determined home side who had the bit between their teeth and were playing with confidence, settling in to their passing game with some attractive moves with direction and purpose. It was after one such move that Mike Kinney added to his tally. Hale did pull one back almost straight from the restart to make it 5-2 but it was to prove Stoneycroft’s day as they
added a sixth following a brilliant exchange of passes that had the Hale defenders mesmerised; that man Kinney popped up again to smash a perfectly hit low cross sweetly into the bulging net and send his team into the second round.
