The celebrated architect, artist and designer took a new direction when he designed a house in the Childwall countryside. Augustus Pugin (1812 – 1852) is regarded as one of the greatest Victorians who influenced many others during his short life. He is known as the Father of the English Arts and Crafts movement. From 1836 Pugin advocated the Gothic Revival style, calling for a return to the positive aspects of the Middle Ages – strong faith and tight social structures – which created a blueprint for the Victorian age.

Pugin designed and refurbished churches throughout Britain and created many of the decorations and statues in the Houses of Parliament. Wealthy timber merchant and shipowner Henry Sharples decided to build an impressive new residence in Woolton Road. Pugin was commissioned to design Oswaldcroft (pictured) and its entrance lodge between 1845 and 1847. The new house rang the changes from previous Pugin designs – the plan was less square in shape than earlier works. continued on page 2
