Great River Road The Great River Road is a collection of state and local roads that follow the course of the Mississippi River through 10 states from Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico. Developed in 1938, the road is 2,340 miles designated with a green-and-white sign showing a river steamboat inside a pilot wheel with the name of the state or province. Muscatine holds a special fondness for the Great River Road as one of our own, Charles H. Young, worked
toward establishing the Great River Road and according to some, the idea for the green and white pilot wheel marker distinguishing the route is attributed to Young. Take a moment to enjoy the view at the Mark Twain Overlook (100-198 Lombard St.) located by the entrance to the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge near downtown Muscatine. Here you can find signage dedicated to Charles H. Young’s work toward establishing the Great River Road. iowagreatriverroad.com
Mississippi Mist The Mississippi Mist is an interactive water feature located in Riverside Park on the Muscatine riverfront. Its center jet, themed like a steamboat smokestack, shoots water up to 30 feet in the air. Water streams from four mist jets, and four outer water cannons shoot water into the center at different intervals. It’s a good idea to wear or bring swimsuits because you’re sure to get soaked. That’s the idea. The Mississippi Mist operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is lit at night. There is no lifeguard on duty and children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Our current and future students are experiencing the benefits of having high quality instructional environments.”
– Terry Hogensen,
Muscatine High School Principal
Within the last 10 years, Muscatine Community School District has invested over $40 million dollars into it’s facilities. From the recent 2020 addition of the STEM wing and other improvements at Muscatine High School, to the brand new Jefferson Elementary built in 2015, Muscatine School District continues to invest in the future of students by providing high quality instructional environments. To ensure the future success of all students, the Portrait of a Muskie Graduate sets students up for success regardless of what their plans are after high school. Muscatine High School provides staff to assist students in planning their future, whether it is going to college, a trade school, or entering the workforce. Helping all students achieve success is the driving force behind Muscatine Community School District. 27

Caring for Muscatine with Improved Hospital Facilities and Services By Dan Stein, Chairman, CBI Bank and Trust, Chairman, UnityPoint Health Trinity Muscatine UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine moved forward in 2021, with a $6 million investment aimed at improving hospital facilities and services provided to our community. I admire how they make choices based on values– the value of patients and the value of employees. That makes it easy to invest in the type of improvements that result

in increased safety, air quality, ease in moving from one space to the next to support the best result for every patient, every time. Full sprinkler coverage will be in place throughout Trinity-Muscatine including hallways, patient rooms, kitchen, and café. An entire wing has been demolished, making way for new, high acute patient rooms to be built. The helipad on the rooftop is being moved to a new location in the greenspace north of the emergency department–where
Daniel P. Stein serves as Board Chair for UnityPoint Health Trinity Muscatine. He is a pillar of the business community in Muscatine, having served as Chairman of the Boardfor Central Bancshares, Inc (CBI) Bank and Trust in Muscatine since 2017.

UnityPoint Clinic Mulberry - Family Medicine Why have you chosen to make your mark in Muscatine? I always knew that I wanted to serve others by working in healthcare. I had a wonderful experience growing up in Muscatine, and living here has an adult raising a young family has proven that Muscatine is a wonderful place to live. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have employment opportunity in Muscatine early in our career after education, training, and working in Iowa City for several years, the chance to move home was presented to us, and the rest is history. There is nowhere I’d rather work, and to serve the people who fill the community that we call home is an incredible opportunity. Now that I’ve been able to practice in Muscatine for several years, our choice to come home has been justified time and again. To be able to offer high quality care with our team at UnityPoint Trinity Muscatine has been wonderful. We’ve made great progress in these last seven years or so and there is plenty more opportunity on the horizon!

there will be more room and improved path and lighting for helicopter arrivals and departures. We applaud UnityPoint Health - Trinity Muscatine for their continued investment in the health and success of our Muscatine community.
What inspired you to become a provider in family medicine? Although it was great experience to start my career in emergency medicine, I find it rewarding how family medicine allows me to care for entire families. I see the positive impact to community health – to provide the education and medical resources to help my patients achieve the healthy lives they seek. I’m inspired by the coordination of care here in Muscatine – you see excellence in surgical services, emergency department and specialists such as orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, mental health - working together as a team to with family providers to care for our patients. What is your favorite thing to do in Muscatine? My wife and I love to take our kids downtown or to the riverfront for community events. We love to eat at Maxwell’s, the restaurant at the Merrill. For the kids - we make it an overnight adventure to stay at the Merrill – with ice cream as a treat from Pearl City Popcorn.
Robert Young Center partnership with Muscatine delivers behavioral health services UnityPoint Health® - Robert Young Center for Community Mental Health (RYC), serves the region by addressing mental health needs. “In Muscatine County and many other places, the need for mental health and substance use disorder programs is in high demand. We partner with many organizations to be lock step as needs evolve,” says Mary A. Petersen, MSN, RN, chief operations officer for Robert Young Center. “We’re here to help improve the health of children and adults in the community.” In Muscatine, the new outpatient clinic at 1616 Cedar Street helps adults and children regardless of their ability to pay for assistance or whether they have insurance. Here, community members can get medication, group or individual counseling and community-based services.
Uniquely, RYC placed a full-time psychiatric therapist in the Muscatine schools. This therapist helps children with a behavioral health need during the school day and with the permission of parents. This approach relieves traditional barriers to care such as transportation or hours. RYC developed, implemented and manages the Eastern Iowa Region Crisis System. Through this partnership Muscatine County has access to a Toll-Free Crisis Line (844) 430-0375 providing crisis counselors to respond in the community 24/7. Whether it’s a weekend, a holiday or the middle of the night, a team of counselors will respond anywhere to an emergency and seek to provide crisis treatment on location. RYC also partners with the Muscatine Center for Social Action which offers
shelter to those in need by offering peer mentors on site at the drop-in center. These mentors have experience with a mental health journey in their own lives and can relate to others to provide support. No appointment is needed Monday through Friday to walk in and talk to a peer mentor, learn about services and connect with care at the time it’s needed. RYC integrated their Telehealth services into the Muscatine Hospital. Community members presenting to the ED in crisis now have access 24/7 to RYC Crisis Evaluators. “We are committed to meeting the needs of Muscatine,” says Petersen. “These partnerships help us to reach our community where they are to make it approachable and accessible to meet behavioral and mental health needs.”
UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine is a
2021 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital Trinity Muscatine has always been committed to providing the best care possible and the best patient experience.
