The finishing touches are being put together as the organisers and participants are preparing to bring the streets of Beccles alive as the town’s annual carnival parade returns.
This years two-day carnival weekend on Sat 21st & Sun 22nd August, set to be the biggest yet with the actual procession expected to be the largest the town will have seen for a number of years, but organisers say there is still time for any last minute entries.
Carnival Organiser, Annette Tackley said “Most towns have lost their carnival but we have been lucky and ours is growing each year”.
She added “Without the tremendous public support and great team of volunteers ours would have gone too, so please continue to come out in support.”
The weekend will see a new food court introduced down at The Quay with a range of delicious food on offer from curry, loaded fries, pizza, fish and for those with a sweet tooth, doughnuts, crepes, ice-cream and cakes.
Beccles Carnival has been running for a number of century’s dating back to pre 1900 with the only years missed being the war and covid pandemic.
A whole host of stalls and exhibitors will be present on the Sunday with items from jewellery, candles, crafts, toys and garden ornaments.
The procession will see carnival queen Miranda Hyde wear the crown who will be accompanied by Princesses Jaimia Woolnough and Phoebe Jackson and Prince Lionel John Richards.
A variety of live entertainment will be on offer along with the return of Battle of the Bands, which will see the finalists; Settlements, Escaping Today and Painting Silence battle for the winning trophy.

GARDEN WITH TOM
August and September are like no other part of the gardening calendar; we must cherish the gentle transition from late summertime to early Autumn. It is often a hot time of year so our plants will need to be sufficiently watered to ensure they thrive throughout this period. It would be nice to have as much floral colour for as long as possible. To be sure that plants get moisture into the all-important roots we should water directly into the base of the plants and ideally in the evening when the risk of evaporation is greatly reduced.
A snip of a deadhead here and there can give our summer plants a last push of colour. We should do the same to our hanging baskets to keep them both tidy and colourful before we take them down until next year.
The summer will have taken its toll on the garden lawn, so laying new turf and sowing grass seed whilst the ground remains warm and nights are becoming cooler and damper are the perfect conditions for seeds to germinate and roots to take. We can make our lawns look presentable and full before the Autumn turns to Winter. The growth of established grass starts to slow a little this month so we should now be cutting the lawn on the highest lawnmower setting as we want
the grass to have plenty of leaf to stay healthy in Autumn and into Winter.
The late summer and early autumn weather will make it easier for weeds, pests and diseases to thrive, meaning our gardening jobs are never quite finished. We should still be looking out for Aphids, Lily Beetles, Vine Weevils and Slugs amongst our leaves and flowers. In the first instance gently remove the pest by hand and then seek the relevant treatment to reduce the risk of them damaging your plant further, this could be an organic spray. By keeping your plants as healthy as possible it will allow them to flourish for a few more weeks and maybe beyond depending on the weather in early autumn. Please do follow me on Instagram & TikTok @garden_with_tom for more seasonal gardening advice and tips.
Short Gardening Tips:
• Deadhead faded and spent flowers
• Give your hedges a trim and tidy
• Use water from a water butt as much as possible
• Turn compost to speed up decomposition
• Keep topping up the birdbath

set, holiday!
Thinking of going on holiday? We’ve teamed up with local independent travel agent Donna Bidwell who’s 28 year experience within the holiday industry might help you when thinking about jetting off.
Having been a travel agent now for 28 years, I have always loved this time of year, known in the industry as the ‘Lates season’. It’s when lots of people decide to arrange their lastminute summer holidays.
It’s the second busiest time of year in travel, arranging holidays for those who left it either late to book or those wanting to cram in their second or third holiday of the year.
That holiday you were eyeing up over a few drinks at the weekend, is likely to of changed in price or gone. Time is of the essence when it comes to booking a late holiday.
One of my favourite destinations is Turkey, with my favourite resort being Olu Deniz. It is a resort I have been to many times and it has such a special feel about it. I would personally recommend going bed and breakfast, so that you can enjoy the superb restaurants that this stunning resort has to offer. If you go a visit to the Blue Lagoon beach is a must, it’s a lovely walk from the centre of Olu Deniz and a wonderful way to spend your day. I have
recommended Olu Deniz many times over the last 28 years, and it has been a huge hit with all of my customers.
If you haven’t travelled since pre covid then you will probably be feeling out of touch with holidays/prices and your confidence of travelling may be knocked; If this sounds like you, trust me, you are not alone. I am arranging holidays for so many people who feel exactly like this and this is where my reassurance and peace of mind really steps in. Once you have been away, they’ll be no stopping you.
If you are looking at holidays online, just be careful and make sure you have fully researched that company before pressing ‘Book’. Many online companies will appear to have a great price to lure you in, only to find it doesn’t include certain elements or the flight times are awful. Remember you get the best protection by booking with a reputable travel agent, like myself. I will take your requirements, wants and needs and you leave it with me to find that perfect holiday, it’s that simple!
The best way to look at company reviews is on Trustpilot. I would love to help you arrange your next holiday. Please get in touch If you would like me to help. Quote ‘Live local’ and when you book, receive a little gift from me.

MONEY TALKS
SOARING RATES ARE BRINGING ANNUITIES BACK INTO FASHION, SAYS RICHARD INCE OF LOVEWELL BLAKE FINANCIAL PLANNING.
Annuity rates have shot up by as much as 50% in the last year – and for those approaching retirement, the advice not to discount annuities as a way of funding your postwork life is compelling.
According to new figures from Canada Life, the break-even point at which retirees get their money back from an annuity investment has fallen by five years, to just 14.5 years for a 65 year-old; the latest annuity tables showing a level rate single annuity paying over 7% at that age (bear in mind that annuity rates do vary on a daily basis, so that figure may be higher or lower by the time you actually read this).
This rapid rise, which is tied in with increasing long-term gilt yields, means that those who might have discounted going down the annuity route may want to reconsider.
Of course, everyone’s needs and aspirations will be different, as will their attitude to risk.
But equally, it is important to remember that you don’t have to use your entire pension pot to buy an annuity.
You might decide, for example, to buy an annuity which (along with other guaranteed income sources such as the state pension and final salary schemes) will cover your projected essential expenditure such as housing, utilities and food, and then leave the rest invested, to be drawn down on an ongoing basis during retirement.
This is why planning for retirement is so important; not just when and how to invest in a pension pot (hint: early and often), but also how to take that pension when you do finally retire. With the market moving so fast, and with annuity rates at levels not seen since the banking crisis of 2008, everyone should approach such planning with an open mind.
While everybody should be reviewing the performance of their pension pot throughout their working life, proactive planning in the final year before retirement can make a huge difference to the security and quality of life you will enjoy once you stop working.

While paddle boarding can feel like a timeless experience, intriguingly, it turns out to have been with us for much longer than we might think.
It’s been around for hundreds of years. Hawaiian fishermen have always paddle boarded, using it to get from one little island to another and to give them a higher perspective when looking for fish or looking out for waves. Recent years have seen paddle boarding evolve into an accessible leisure pursuit, especially here on the East Coast.
We’ve had a trip around the local area, having a look at some great spots to launch your board and set sail on the water.
BECCLES
The River Waveney forms the border between Suffolk and Norfolk for much of its length. Mainly a river which runs through the Norfolk Broads, it measures 59 miles long and you can set sail on the water from Beccles Quay.
OULTON BROAD
Take to the water from Oulton Broad Water Sports site onto the open water with stunning views of area once on the water and the area has some great spots to enjoy a picnic.
MARTHAM
A great spot to venture onto the water is at
HICKLING STAITHE
Hickling Broad is situated on the Upper Thurne river, a great spot to see a variety of wildlife whilst on the water.
It’s important that when paddle boarding that you take all the necessary safety precautions and wear a life jacket!

1. Line a muffin tin with paper cases. Sift the cocoa powder into a bowl, pour in the boiling water and mix into a thick paste. Add the remaining cake ingredients and mix with an electric hand whisk (or beat with a wooden spoon); equally between the 12 paper cases. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F, Gas mark 6) for about 12-15 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Cool in the cases on a wire rack.
