WELCOME

I'm delighted to welcome you to our Spring 2014 season. Live at LICA is a producing house and presenter of great art across live and exhibition formats and it’s a great privilege to be leading the centre at this exciting time. In the coming months I'm eager to meet with audiences and visitors to discuss how we can build on Live at LICA's legacy. This is especially so in the case of those who have joined our Supporter Scheme in its inaugural year, to whom I extend my heartfelt thanks. Your support aids us in our aim to inspire and engage a diverse crosssection of the population with innovative arts programming. Increasingly, Live at LICA is presenting unique events in locations around the Lancashire region and the North West. Last November's adventure at Lancaster Castle during the Light Up The Streets event being just one example with theatre company imitating the dog. This season much of our focus returns to Lancaster University, our home, an www.liveatlica.org

institution celebrating its 50th Anniversary from January 2014. Our traditional on-campus settings, the Nuffield Theatre and the Great Hall, host live programme highlights from Nottingham and Berlin’s Gob Squad, presenting mind-blowing theatre in the form of their new work Western Society (p25), and a first time visit from dance company Junk Ensemble with The Falling Song (p27) accompanied by a 20-strong choir from Lancaster's Dallas Road Community Primary School. We are particularly pleased to present the Violin Duo Retorica (p17), who will perform works by Sergi Prokofiev and premiere a brand new Live at LICA commissioned composition from his great-grandson, Gabriel. This season’s exhibition meanwhile sees Live at LICA once again out and about, presenting Taiwanese sensation Wu Chi-Tsung (p8-9) at both our on-campus Peter Scott Gallery and the gallery at The Storey in Lancaster city centre.

Whatever the location of our programme, we are very proud of our University heritage. I also hope you can join us on campus for OPEN, a series of days in May (p5) exploring Live at LICA's many sides alongside presentations from our current crop of Supported Artists.

EXHIBITIONS

This Spring, Live at LICA forms part of a unique partnership called Recalibrate which will deliver the first UK solo showcase of the acclaimed Taiwanese artist Wu Chi-Tsung. We are thrilled to be working with our national partners the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (Manchester) and Site Gallery (Sheffield), with the support of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture. At the heart of the Lancaster presentation will be a splitsite exhibition and local partnership between Peter Scott Gallery and The Storey. The venues will simultaneously host the work of Wu Chi-Tsung to give a more comprehensive overview of the artist’s practice. The Grade II listed gallery at The Storey and the distinctive Peter Scott Gallery were built almost a century apart, giving a wonderful contrast in display spaces and together make the Lancaster edition of Recalibrate the largest of the project.

Furthermore the Peter Scott collection will be used to create a complimentary display that considers the principles of traditional Chinese work, that influenced Wu Chi-Tsung. The traditional Chinese works provided inspiration during the artist’s training and the values are still present in his work today. Finally, an update on some of our other gallery projects. We will shortly begin testing our app designed for the NESTA Digital R&D scheme, you can find out more about the project and watch videos on our website. We are also in the process of establishing our Testing Media project acquisition, a case study will appear on the Contemporary Art Society website and we will be making a presentation as part of a day-long workshop event in London on the 23rd May 2014.

Opening event, 6.30pm 31 January

Supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, a new partnership programme with the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (Manchester) and Site Gallery (Sheffield) will deliver a series of exhibitions across the country to bring about the first UK solo showcase of work by acclaimed Taiwanese artist Wu Chi-Tsung. The Lancaster edition of Recalibrate will host a unique split-site exhibition between Peter Scott Gallery and the dramatic grade II listed gallery at The Storey. Wu Chi-Tsung is interested in how images are made and seen. Landscape, nature and the urban environment feature in his work and the themes are central to the Recalibrate programme exhibitions. Although his early

influences come from painting, specifically Eastern shan shui works and Western watercolour landscapes, his powerful work is often realised through video, photography, installation and performance.

Lancaster will present artworks that include the all-encompassing installation Crystal City 004 (a newly commissioned work for Recalibrate), cyanotypes from the Wrinkled Textures series and several examples from Wu Chi-Tsung’s elegant landscape and still life video works.

CONCERTS

The second half of our Concert season for 2013-2014 presents a variety of events for connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike. Greats like Schubert, Vivaldi and Mozart feature alongside innovative works from living composers, and a feast of jazz and cabaret. Covering the classical spectrum, we bring you a soloist from British shores in the form of Brecon Baroque’s Rachel Podger (p18) and, visiting from international climes, Italy's Quartetto di Cremona (p13), whilst magical vocal ensemble I Fagiolini (p12) take on the early music of the feted composer Don Carlo Gesualdo. Living composers meanwhile feature in the schedule of the marvellous Fidelio Trio (p16) from Graham Fitkin (a previous Live at LICA Composer in Residence) and Tom Coult – alongside repertoire by Schumann and Revel, and on the lighter side vocal trio Juice team up with jazz/classical quintet Tangent (p14), who number emerging

saxophonist Trish Clowes in their midst, to take on work from renowned young composer Luke Styles and Clowes herself. Continuing such mixes of past and present, the Retorica Violin Duo play works by Sergei Prokofiev and premiere a brand new Live at LICA commission by his great grandson, Gabriel. Finally, Live at LICA commissioned chanteuse Bethany Jameson aims to enchant the soul (p15) and we welcome back the perennially popular National Youth Jazz Orchestra (p19). I do hope you find plenty to savour from this wideranging Spring schedule.

I FAGIOLINI (STRANGE HARMONY OF LOVE) 7.30PM, THURSDAY 30 JANUARY GREAT HALL WEB ADVANCE: £21.50 / £18.50 (£18.50, £16.50 CONCESSIONS) £7.50 YOUNG PERSON / STUDENT STANDARD: £23 / £20 (£20, £18 CONCESSIONS) £9 YOUNG PERSON / STUDENT

Renaissance music of sweet and strange beauty. In Don Carlo Gesualdo’s 400th anniversary year, this concert offers his most powerful madrigals given context by similarly minded avant-gardists of the time, offering a quite extraordinary evening of musical mannerism. It's time to lay to rest to the lazy ‘truth’ that Gesualdo killed his wife, then lamented this in tortured music. Murdering your wife as a punishment for adultery was acceptable behaviour in 16th century Italy and Gesualdo’s music focusses less on guilt and more on betrayal. (Similarly the ‘whipping at stool’ he suffered was a medical cure on a par with being prescribed leeches – Blackadder fans will sympathise). Rather, the avant-garde nature of his music developed from a prolonged stay at the home of Italy’s hothouse of musical modernism, the court of Ferrara. In that highly experimental ethos and surrounded by a brilliant vocal ensemble, Gesualdo took the late madrigal to undreamt-of extremes. His final works sound closer to Brahms or even Wagner. There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm in the Great Hall.

QUARTETTO DI CREMONA CRISTIANO GUALCO (violin) PAOLO ANDREOLI (violin) SIMONE GRAMAGLIA (viola) GIOVANNI SCAGLIONE (cello) 7.30PM, THURSDAY 6 FEBRUARY (IN THE ROUND SEATING) GREAT HALL WEB ADVANCE: £21.50 (£18.50 CONCESSIONS) £7.50 YOUNG PERSON / STUDENT STANDARD: £23 (£20 CONCESSIONS) £9 YOUNG PERSON / STUDENT

The Quartetto di Cremona are internationally renowned for their mature and lyrical sound, something which is no doubt in part due to the set of magnificent Cremonese instruments – a combination of old and new masters – which they are privileged to perform on. Their programme contrasts a first half of some of the most charming music ever written in Kreisler’s String Quartet and an early work by the Genoese maestro, Paganini, with one of the truly greatest works ever written for the medium, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.

Award-winning experimental vocal trio Juice and jazz/classical quintet Tangent (featuring BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Trish Clowes) present a programme which shows off their humour, ingenuity, wit and talent, and which draws on classical, world music, jazz, folk, pop, improvisation and theatre. At the heart of the evening, is a brand-new work by renowned young composer Luke Styles, currently Glyndebourne's Young Composer In Residence. Setting a native Canadian folk tale, the piece blends the worlds of contemporary classical music, jazz and improvisation in a quirky and playful story telling. Style’s work is a commission for the New Music Biennial, which will present a series of 20 brand new music commissions to audiences across the UK in 2014, including showcases in London and Glasgow coinciding with the Commonwealth Games. Her acclaimed Cabaret Vérité quartet mix up a cocktail of gorgeous French chansons (Piaf, Brel, Greco, Hot Club de France), sultry Argentinean tangos (Piazzolla) and their own new Cabaret songs about lost love, politics and economics (both marital and international!), the beauty products scandal, looking after ageing parents and picking up younger men in bars! A riot of retro glitz and glamour, gentle (and some not-so-gentle), witty new lyrics and much loved tunes you will hum all the way home. The Fidelio Trio have carved an excellent reputation as much for their exceptional virtuosity as for their promotion of contemporary music. They perform extremely diverse music, both nationally and internationally, and are constantly commissioning new works from a range of leading international composers. Two new pieces in tonight’s programme are by composers familiar to our audiences – Graham Fitkin and our former Young Composer in Residence 2011, Tom Coult. They are flanked by the quintessentially romantic third trio by Schumann, full of drama, heroism and tragedy and Ravel’s exquisite Basqueinfluenced Trio. Ravel rushed its composition, so keen was he to enlist in the army at the start of World War I. Despite his hurry, it contains some of the most magical moments ever heard in chamber music.

The finest duos in the world are those who display a seamless fusion of their instruments brought about by an instinctive rapport. The violin duo, Retorica, is a duo of intense imagination and energy and their enjoyment of the music is contagious. They have brought together a dynamic palate of works, including the spectacular Handel/Halvorsen duo and works by both the great Sergei Prokofiev and the premiere of a new work by his great grandson, Gabriel. The new sonata by Gabriel Prokofiev is commissioned by Live at LICA.

Following their hugely successful appearance three years ago, we welcome the National Youth Jazz Orchestra back to Lancaster. The band features musicians and vocalists from around the country, most of whom go on to become professional musicians. Alumni include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Gerard Presencer, Pete Long, Dennis and Winston Rollins and Amy Winehouse, which gives an idea why Sir John Dankworth is famously quoted as describing NYJO as “one of the best bands you will ever hear.”

THEATRE,DANCE & LIVE ART

There are lots of treats in our Spring season this year. Live at LICA favourites Gob Squad return with their incredible new work, Western Society, a fresh, ironic and often hilarious take on what living in western society really feels like now. We are also very pleased to cocommission and host More Music’s 20th Anniversary celebratory gig in the form of Frontierland. This work commemorates the 10th anniversary of the cockling disaster in Morecambe, and its dramaturg is the Olivier-Award winning Mark Whitelaw.

Dance features strongly this season, and has a distinctly local flavour: the North West’s graduate dance company 12° North present a triple bill including a commission from the innovative choreographer Lea Anderson, and Flexer & Sandiland’s outstanding cast of Weightless includes Lancaster’s own George Adams. A first time visit from Junk Ensemble with The Falling Song promises to be a clear highlight of the season – an extraordinary and daring dance work accompanied by a young choir from Dallas Road Community Primary School in Lancaster.

Alice Booth Creative Producer alice@liveatlica.org

A heady mix of the local and international, this is a season with something for everyone. Enjoy!

Lancaster welcomes the inimitable Stacy Makishi with a stunning new solo show, The Falsettos, a deftly woven mix of text, movement and stand-up. An honest and hilarious display of Makishi’s intimate reflections on murder, mortality and mid-life crisis, The Falsettos splices together influences from American popular culture including The Sopranos, Barbra Streisand and E.T. With mobs, midlife, lowlife and taboo getting the Makishi treatment, this is a show for our times - uncompromising, compassionate and joyously absurd. Weightless, in a tongue in cheek way, questions the ‘weight’ of history: what is it that roots us down physically and emotionally? What might it feel like to let go or take flight? This show carries Yael Flexer's recognisable stamp of witty text and humour combined with fast-paced, space-hungry movement. An exciting digital element is provided by Nic Sandiland, plus an extraordinary musical score is provided by composer Dougie Evans and Israeli cellist/singer Karni Postel. “dance that is unforced, unaffected, charming and smart” - Time Out “A gently deviant sense of humor” – The Guardian www.flexerandsandiland.com Approx: 60 mins. 12yrs +

Gob Squad is a group of international artists who have made performances and videos, searching for beauty in the everyday, since 1994. Western Society is a portrait of civilisation in the 21st century, like a frame through which we can peep into the living room of an unknown family, and recognize ourselves. By exploring the internet’s remote darkness, Gob Squad have brought back a tiny satellite, an unwatched video of an anonymous living room, of a family gathering somewhere at the edge of the western world. Western Society is inviting and isolating. It’s heaven and hell. Some see a nightmare, others a place they desire. You are there too… “This is theatre in its purest and best form - ingeniously put together, extremely funny, entertaining, crazy and with a charming whiff of anarchy in the air.” - Kulturradio RBB “The show has an irresistible magic and is quite simply a barrel load of fun.” - Berliner Morgenpost Approx: 105 mins. 16yrs + http://www.gobsquad.com/projects/western-society Photo Credit: Garrett Davis/capture imaging
