WORLD-CLASS CONTEMPORARY ARTS FOR THE CAMPUS, THE CITY AND THE REGION

PIC N’ MIX AND SAVE!

WELCOME Welcome to our Spring 2012 programme of professional theatre, dance, music and art. We are excited to present so much new work of outstanding quality that traverses artform boundaries. Our programme strands are now crossing over and enriching each other in ways we could only imagine a few years ago. The result is a season of wonderful sights and sounds from some world-class artists.

Meanwhile the extraordinary guitarist Xuefei Yang performs alongside the Lancashire Sinfonietta as part of our relationship with the region’s orchestra, now our orchestra in residence.

In the gallery, visual artist Mel Brimfield has created new work and films as part of her ongoing fictional exploration of art history, This Is Performance Art. We asked Mel to propose a theatrical event to open her exhibition, and she has invited New Art Club to present their latest show in the Nuffield Theatre.

Finally, in a nod to the Olympic year, in January we launch An Exquisite Corpse for 2012 that will see artists create new works in response to a previous artwork, before handing on to someone else. Starting with the fantastic Lancaster-based director and theatremaker Andy Smith (a smith), we have no idea where we will end up, but we’re very excited to find out.

In our music programme, the percussionists of Sound Affairs deliver their live score to the 1923 silent film Salomé, and the Brodsky Quartet play a musical Russian roulette.

Save money on every single ticket you purchase when you book online and select our 'Web Advance' tickets. All 'Web Advance' tickets are available via www.liveatlica.org until 4 hours before the published start time.

Theatre and dance highlights include The Forest, Fevered Sleep’s stunning production for young people aged 5 and up, hot from a sell-out run at Sydney Opera House, and co-presented with The Dukes.

We hope you find something to entice or intrigue you this Spring.

COMING SOON:CURATETHE CAMPUS

LIVE AT LICA SYMPOSIUM

1-12 MAY 2012

GETTING IT OUTTHERE: THE FUTURE OFTOURING FOR CONTEMPORARYTHEATRE AND LIVE ART

Curate the campus is a fortnight-long experiment each May that sees Live at LICA locate outdoor and site-specific art projects across the Lancaster University campus and beyond. The project also hosts a series of artist’s residencies that enable the research and development of new public realm art projects.

LIVE AT LICA, LANCASTER, 10AM-5.30PM, MAY 12TH, 2012

Getting It Out There is a one-day symposium for those making, presenting and supporting performance, contemporary theatre and live art in England. It is about the future of these artforms and how they are presented, and the changing face of national touring.

Last year saw over 1000 people participate in events, and several previous Curate the Campus development projects have gone on to tour nationally. A full programme will be announced in March 2012 See www.liveatlica.org/curatethecampus or search #curatethecampus for more details.

Getting It Out There brings together panels of artform specialists to ask overdue questions about the role of curators, programmers, producers and venues. It considers the wider implications of the structures used to fund, develop and present new work, and emerging models for touring countrywide. It explores the dissemination of practice in the light of hybrid forms, digital realities and networks, while keeping a clear eye on the unique role of the live encounter as the lifeblood of the sector.

The event includes creative responses from artists sustaining a practice across contexts and regions, and explores international perspectives on the issues raised. The event will be of interest to artists, producers, programmers, curators, arts funders and those invested in the future of contemporary performance. Getting it Out There is a LANWest project, co-produced by hÅb and Live at LICA, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Presented in Association with Live Art UK. Tickets: £20 / £15 concessions, freelance, artists (includes lunch and refreshments)

EXHIBITIONS The blurring of fact and fabrication witnessed in our Autumn exhibitions continues this Spring when we open with Mel Brimfield’s This Is Performance Art. Based around the second episode of Brimfield’s fictional TV series of the same name, and featuring newly commissioned work, the show includes the musings of Barbara Hepworth and Lee Krasner in a tangled web of apparent documentation. The opening event is followed by the latest work by performance company New Art Club, one of Brimfield’s many collaborators (see page 22 for details). This is followed by the nationally touring Reflections on the Self: Five African Women Photographers, an exhibition curated by Christine Eyene featuring artists who use portraiture as a way to engage with a range of contemporary issues.

Sitting alongside both of the Spring exhibitions is the second of our New to the Collection displays showcasing the gallery’s recently acquired Wall Plate series by renowned British artist Patrick Caulfield (1936 – 2005). May 2012 sees the third installment of our curatorial project Conversations with the Collection. An intricate set of year-long relationships between local schools, Lancaster University students, a lead artist and LUSU Involve will generate a unique collections-based exhibition. To find out more about the show, keep an eye on our website in the coming months.

MEL BRIMFIELD

THIS IS PERFORMANCE ART - PARTTWO: EXPERIMENTALTHEATRE AND CABARET 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY PETER SCOTT GALLERY Public Opening, 6.30pm 19 January

Mel Brimfield’s complex practice takes a skewed and tangled romp through the development of performance art, simultaneously revealing and inventing a rich history of collaboration between visual artists, dancers, theatre makers, political activists and comedians. It sees the debut of the second episode of This Is Performance Art, Brimfield’s ongoing fictional TV series investigating “what is omitted, forgotten, lost and fictionalised by the faulty mechanics of museological, curatorial and archival approaches to assimilating performance art history.” The show premieres new film and photographic work commissioned and supported by Live at LICA and Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool. Brimfield’s work is also made with support from Performance Matters, a collaboration between Goldsmiths, University of London, Roehampton Institute and the Live Art Development Agency, financially assisted by the AHRC. The exhibition is accompanied by a stunning new publication – This Is Performance Art – published by Back Dog Press, featuring a foreword by Live at LICA Director Matt Fenton. Public Opening, 6.30pm 22 February

This display marks the acquisition of a series of prints by the internationally renowned British painter and printmaker Patrick Caulfield (1936 – 2005). The Wall Plate series consists of four prints that show Caulfield’s fascination with everyday objects and with light. Acquired with generous support from the Lancaster University Friends Programme and the Peter Scott Gallery Charitable Trust, the Wall Plates series will be accompanied by other Caulfield prints from the Peter Scott Gallery collection.

Curated by Christine Eyene, Reflections on the Self presents women’s visual narratives, as told through self-portraits or portraits of others. The work engages with issues such as identity, sexuality and displacement and is produced by African female photographers whose views of the world have been shaped by their own experiences in Africa and the diaspora. The photographers are Hélène Amouzou (Togo, Belgium); Majida Khattari (Morocco, France); Zanele Muholi (South Africa); Senayt Samuel (Eritrea, UK); Lolo Veleko (South Africa).

The origins of the Foden's band go back to 1900 when the village of Elworth near Sandbach formed its own band to feature in the relief of Mafeking in the Boer War.

Salomé is a visual feast. This controversial and influential arthouse classic is a rarely seen piece of film history. Adapted from the controversial Oscar Wilde play, this production brings together a screening of the silent film with a live performance of a new score by Charlie Barber. Inspired by the sounds of traditional Arabian ensembles, the music is performed by four percussionists, playing from towers on either side of the screen.

*INCLUDES COMPLIMENTARY GLASS OF WINE OR SOFT DRINK

Thirty seven times a prize winner at the National Championships of Great Britain, the Foden's have maintained their position as one of the worlds leading brass bands. As well as being extremely successful on the contest field, Foden's are in great demand for concerts in the UK and abroad due to their diversity and entertaining choice of programmes. Preview Concert 6.45pm

Made in 1923, Salomé loosely follows the biblical story of King Herod and his desire for his young stepdaughter. It is Salomé’s desire for Jokanaan (John the Baptist) that causes her to dance before Herod…

A love of French music has brought this all-star cast together to perform this sumptuous programme. The Doric String Quartet return to Lancaster with this rarely heard string quartet by Chausson. The poor composer was nearly at the end of writing the work when he died after his bicycle crashed into a wall, and it was later completed by D’Indy. This is followed by a delicious selection of impressionistic piano music performed by Lancashire’s darling of the piano, Kathryn Stott. This concert ends with a heady rendition of Chausson’s epic Concert for violin, piano and string quartet. The composer exclaimed “Never have I had such a success! I can't get over it. Everyone seems to love the Concert.” This melodic blockbuster will feature the exceptional young violinist and former winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike. www.jenniferpike.com www.kathrynstott.com www.doricstringquartet.com Pre-Concert Talk 6.45pm

Nominated for a Theatre Awards UK award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. Known for creating witty and profound dance-theatre from everyday life, Luca Silvestrini’s award-winning Protein has struck dance gold with LOL (lots of love). In an age of electronic communication this timely, critically acclaimed production puts its six dancers on a quest for romance. Against a video wall of dozens of screen-gazing individuals, Protein’s cyber souls nail the language of life online. Talking and dancing at speed, they tackle the baffling etiquette of electronic discourse, make hilarious confessions, and dance the physical equivalent of poking and tweeting. During Curate the Campus in May 2011, musician Peter Moser spent 24 hours isolated up Lancaster University’s Bowland Tower. Every hour he composed and performed a new song, and broadcast them online.

KIN explores the fear, sorrow, anger and guilt, but also the love and laughter to be found as middle-aged people negotiate their changing relationship with their parents. In moving close-ups, performers reveal concerns of their own ageing while dealing with their parents’ increasingly glacial pace of life.

Some songs were written for someone in a particular time-zone – Montreal, the Philippines, Vancouver – and so the songs travelled the globe. Others were written in response to emails, tweets or texts… Performed as a gig for the first time, this is 24 songs in two sets. Rants, love songs and comic calypsos in a room showing the 24-hour timelapsed view from a tower, for a live audience and online.

Stevenage is a unique solo combining performance, film and town planning. It is performed by Mandy Romero and directed by Cathy Butterworth. Stevenage – the first English New Town – is an unlikely subject for a show. But this performance beautifully explores many interlinked lives: a “young man wearing a brown corduroy suit”, an English pastoral poet, a young woman who moved south in the early 20th Century, a young film actor. It’s about a town and the lives of a post-war generation up to the present day.

GALLERY SHOP

All kinds of experience – from sex and cinema to town planning and taxi driving – weave themselves into uncanny patterns. Your guide through the labyrinth of connections is Mandy Romero, transgender artist…

From silver jewellery to sock monster toys, pottery to postcards, the Live at LICA shop based in the Peter Scott Gallery features an exciting and varied selection of work by local artists and craft makers. We also stock a large range of books, CDs and DVDs which relate to the current season, and cover diverse artistic practices including an exciting mix of publications and limited editions from the Live Art Development Agency 'Unbound' range.

Stevenage explores the ways in which we know, or think we know, who we are. It uses physicality, cinema and original architectural models to examine the role of place in creating identity. Roger Hill is running an artist’s workshop exploring place and the built environment in a context of relentless economic change. Taking the idea of “regeneration” as highly contentious, the workshop concentrates on the evidence we might assemble as artists to locate ourselves in a shifting and increasingly virtual world. 11am, Wednesday 7th March.
