A New Year

Voted 2013 New Business of The Year Executive Publishers Jason & Heather Reynolds Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com Production/Creative Director Jason Reynolds Jason@CedarbrookMedia.com

Happy New Year Prosper!! It’s hard to believe that at this time last year, we were bringing home our brand new, beautiful, healthy baby girl!! This past year has gone by so fast, and it literally seems like yesterday that we were impatiently awaiting her arrival. Yet, here we are, a year later, with a sweet, loving, inquisitive and curious toddler that loves to make us all laugh. It may sound cliché, but we honestly feel like we went to bed last night with a newborn, and woke up this morning with a one-year old! And although our older children are not changing at the same lightning rate of speed, it’s equally as hard to believe that we are halfway through another school year and embarking on another baseball season! Time moves so fast, regardless of how hard we try to slow it down. All we can do is try to cherish every moment. We wish all of our readers a very happy and Prosper-ous New Year! We thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for your continued support and editorial contributions. We pride ourselves on being Prosper’s community magazine, and look forward to another amazing year for our students, our school district and our town. While we’ll continue to grow in population, student enrollment and businesses, we must always remain true to our small town roots and family values. We’re excited to share in the growth and help promote everything positive that is Prosper!!

Jason & Heat her Reynolds With Prosper Pride,

Have you been married for 25 years or more??? Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and we’d like to recognize all of the amazing couples who have shared more than 25 years of marriage together. New Year! New Achievements!

by Dionna Black, BS Nutrition and Fitness Certified Personal Trainer, Nutritionist and Wellness Coach at The Cell

No matter how big or small your goalwhether it’s losing 5 or 50 pounds, walking a mile or running your first marathonmaking change requires planning and SMART goal setting. SMART goal setting is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. Let’s break down the elements of a shortterm goal to lose 50lbs.: I want to lose at least 4lbs. each month starting February 1, 2015 and will meet this goal by December 31, 2015.

1. Specific. Are all of the details of what you want to exactly achieve in your goal? For example, our goal is not to just lose weight. It is to lose 4lbs. each month. 2. Measurable. How will you know you’re making progress and when you have achieved your goal? To track the weight loss, you can mark your progress on a calendar, use web tools, or put money in a jar for each 4lb. loss. Be creative, so that you can see your progress. How motivating! 3. Attainable. Is your goal realistic? Is it

12 Live & PROSPER Magazine | January 2015

realistic for you, your lifestyle, your current schedule, your level of motivation? Your goal cannot be too easy that you don’t feel like you are striving for something, but you do not want it to be too extreme that you feel overwhelmed. 4. Relevant. Is this a goal that you have wanted to achieve? Is it important to you? 5. Time-bound. Create an end date for your goal. Having an end date creates motivation to get started. And a focus of when you can celebrate your achievement!

Herrin Real Estate, LLC Now that you have your SMART goal for the overall goal, you can now set your SMART goal for the action steps. Will you only drink a high-calorie beverage once per week? Will you walk 3 days per week for 30 minutes? Will you choose whole grain bread for your sandwich for lunch instead of white bread Monday through Friday? Equipping yourself with the skill of setting SMART goals for what you want to achieve this year will create self-confidence and self-efficacy, optimism about your future, and a clear sense of the direction your are heading. Live Life Live Life It’s that time of year again. The gifts are put away, we’ve said our goodbyes to visiting friends and family, and we begin to consider the fresh stretch of 2015 laid out in front of us. This is when we are most enthusiastic about getting a new and improved hold on our health and wellness. But while the oldies but goodies are most definitely worthy (I will go to the gym more, I will lose those stubborn 20 pounds…), what if we consider something that can improve the well-being of EVERYONE in the home? How about committing to the emotional health of your family in a new way? Sometimes our over scheduled, hectic family lives can come at the expense of connection with our kids, our spouse. If this sounds familiar, here are some easy things that you can do that can have a big impact on your relationships with loved ones. It’s a great way to start the New Year, and you won’t have to give anything up to do them! For little ones at home, try these relationship building tricks: 1) Aim to give your child at least two sandwich hugs a day. These are full on, enveloping, can’t

get enough of you hugs. A tickle session added in can’t hurt. This will make your child feel truly special to you. 2) When trying to fix dinner or some other task that they need to stay out of the way for, reach for crayons and paper instead of the TV and have them sit near you. Chat with them about what they are creating as you work, offering responses when appropriate. This

connection with their parents just as much as they used to, just in different ways. Some things to try: 1) When your teen approaches you and you’re tempted to list all the tasks and chores they haven’t done yet, bite your tongue for a few minutes. Instead, share a laugh about something funny or ask how they did their new hairstyle, etc. And if they want to talk about something deeper, pull up a chair and embrace the moment! The tasks and chores can wait another 15 minutes, and are easier to bring up if the moment feels good. 2) Remember the sandwich hug mentioned above? Ditto for the teens! They may resist and act like it’s really weird, but it carries the same message. 3) If the goal at the dinner table is to talk as a family, model for them. Instead of just firing questions, tell a funny story or chat about an upcoming vacation. Feeling off the hook to “respond” might relax and open them up with stories of their own to share.

A New Look at the New Year’s Resolution

makes your child feel you are interested in having them near you after what may have been a long day apart. 3) At the end of each day, commit to spending at least a few positive minutes talking and relating to your child. Maybe on the bed or the floor with them at bedtime. Even if the day was chaotic and frustrating, even if you and your child argued all day, ending the day on a positive note reassures them of your love and acceptance. Teens can be a bit trickier, but even if they don’t say it or show it, they need

But let’s face it, Mom and Dad need to connect as well and this too often gets left behind. Raising a family, working, and all

the fine print that goes with it can leave us drained. And sometimes the effort sounds exhausting. But small things can make a difference: 1) Decide together to spend at least 15 minutes after the kids are in bed and dishes are done to just talk. No cell phone, computer or iPad. Just catching up. This is not a huge amount of time, but 15 minutes of undivided attention can go farther than an hour of sharing attention with the electronics. 2) Each night ask your spouse to come up with one thing they would like you to do for them the next day. It can be more of something, something to do differently, or a new thing to do. Start with simple requests (bring me a cup of coffee, talk with me while I make dinner, call me once during the day and say “I love you”) and go from there. Take turns making the request. 3) And on those crazy days and hectic nights when zoning and disconnecting sound like a well needed break, then go for it. But take 2 minutes to check in, letting the other know “I love you, but my day was awful and I need to zone right now. Is that okay for tonight?” Then zone together, on the couch, toes touching. It’s still connection.

“Deep in the HEART of Prosper” All of us here at Live & PROSPER Magazine would like to recognize the amazing people of Prosper, Texas. We are looking for stories of triumph, achievement and accomplishment. Did you have an obstacle to overcome recently and powered through to success? Worked tirelessly towards a goal and reached it? Or maybe you know of someone who just continually gives of themselves to the community. If so, we’d love to hear from you! We’d like to publish at least one story in each issue of Live & PROSPER Magazine this year…so please keep them coming!! You can send your submission to Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com

The Town of Prosper is committed to public health and safety, and is among one of the first Fire Departments in North Texas to equip its ambulances with onboard decontamination units for the patient transport area. This hands-free system is designed to help stop the spread of disease and infection from patient to patient, as well as the treating firefighters. With the recent news of Ebola entering our country, this revolutionary new system mitigates the threat of this disease, healthcare-associated infections and even contagious pathogens such as H1N1 influenza to first responders, healthcare workers and citizens. Prior to this revolutionary hand-free system, ambulances and fire stations had to be decontaminated by hand. Manual decontamination is time-consuming, and studies have shown that it may actually spread dangerous healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) to previously noncontaminated areas. Our new hands-free system is easy to transport and simple to use. With the push of a button, it emits a fine mist that envelops the entire interior of the ambulance, reaching into

every corner and covering all surface areas. The process provides consistent, reliable delivery of the correct amount of disinfectant‌decontaminating to OSHA and NFPA specifications every time. The advantages this system provides are many, and the Prosper Fire Department benefits in many ways.

DESTROYS THESE PATHOGENS: Proven to be effective against MRSA, E. coli, Norovirus, HIV-1, H1N1, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and many more.

“Public Health is something that we cannot be reactive about . We must be proactive, because we may not get a 2nd chance.” - Chief Ronnie Tucker SPEED: - Faster decontamination process - Improved unit turn-around time - Redeploy staff to highest and best use

SAFETY: - Reduces staff and patient exposure to dangerous pathogens - Consistent and reliable delivery of disinfectant - Improved cleanliness EFFICIENCY: - Increase unit availability and transports - Decrease response times - Reduce lost unit hours - Less labor required

ADAPTABILITY: - Decontaminate any asset, anywhere, anytime - Not just for the ambulance - Myriad of uses around the firehouse

“While there are other departments that are purchasing this equipment, we are proud of the fact that we are the very first in North Texas to actually be using it.” - Assistant Chief Stuart Blasingame Health & Wellness | WeAreProsper.com

//The People In January, it was announced that the Town of Prosper set another record in issuing single family permits – 486 in 2013, a 115% increase from just five years ago. It was also recorded that Prosper has been steadily increasing an average of about 15% each year since 2008. The Town of Prosper has been planning for this swell in housing and investing in large scale infrastructure – water and sewer mains, increasing water storage, reconstructing major thoroughfares, increasing parks, police manpower and planning for a 2nd fire station. While the final numbers are not yet available for single family permits in 2014, as of November, we were already at 506 – setting another record for 2014!!

On Saturday, April 26th, Prosper celebrated the 100th anniversary of its incorporation. The Centennial Celebration was a grand community event, complete with food, games, cake and a Zip-Line! Downtown Prosper had an atmosphere of what life was like in 1914...the Prosper Historical Society was dressed in farm dresses, coveralls, bonnets and parasols. Cakes, pies and other treats were available for purchase at the “Country Store” and a display of old farming equipment contributed to the nostalgia of the day. A great time was shared by all…Happy 100th Birthday Prosper!!

PROS 20 100 YE IN REV

In February, Live & PROSPER Magazine announced the Prosper Person of the Year for 2013…JENNIFER SANCHEZ!! The nominations poured in again about our remarkable, compassionate and giving residents. Nominees included Harlan Jefferson, Drake Dunn, Marcy Henson, Susan Horn, Wayne Bartley and Lena Smith. New this year was the Prosper Person of the Year Award Night… where Dr. Drew Watkins, Person of the Year 2012 announced, via FaceTime, the 2013 winner. His tribute, “Ode to Jenn” was fantastic, fun and a true representation of what this award symbolizes. We can’t wait to announce the 2014 winner!!

PROSPER

An indicator of Prosper’s growth, the Prosper Police Department added several experienced officers to the ranks. The addition of these officers brings the total count of 18 sworn officers. The new Prosper officers, Jarrett Matthew Lowry, Derek Lee McCord and Joseph Mark Watson, have a combined 26 years of law enforcement experience…providing the kind of service our residents expect and deserve. Another change to the department came when veteran patrol officer Sam Owens was named as Prosper Police Department’s first Detective. Owens has been with PPD since 2010, is a former US Marine, and has over 16 years of experience in law enforcement. Finally, after a national search, Doug Kowalski was named Chief of Police in Prosper. Chief Kowalski has been in law enforcement since 1977, serving the Dallas and McKinney communities.

The first event in the Prosper Summer Series was a tremendous success!! Families showed up on that beautiful day in May to enjoy a live concert from Prosper’s very own EP Recording Artist, Lucy Scholl and stayed to enjoy a fun evening of games, activities, food, music and the movie “Frozen” on the big screen. Small town living at its best…friends, family and neighbors. WE ARE PROSPER!!

On September 11th, our Prosper Fire Department hosted a solemn ceremony to remember the events of September 11, 2001. The commemorative event, held on the lawn of the Prosper Fire Station, began at 8:40am with Pastor Jason McConnell of Prosper United Methodist Church, who acted as narrator and chaplain. An American flag was draped over the steel beam fragment from the World Trade Center…and at the exact times of each attack that tragic, fateful morning, the Prosper Fire Department Honor Guard and Prosper Police Department Honor Guard took their respective posts at the steel beam and flagpoles. A day of remembrance and respect for all of those lives tragically lost…a day we will never forget. 9.11.01

Midnight Madness 2014 marked another successful start to the school year and sports season. It doesn’t get much more Texas than BBQ, football and fireworks…and we had it all this year! Mr. Wright, PHS Principal, was at the top of his game and this was one of the best kick-offs in Eagle history.

R, TEXAS

-2014

PRIDE IN THE SKY 2014!!! A Charity Softball Game, Car Show and Fireworks…what a great day in Prosper, Texas! Thousands showed up to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day at Frontier Park. Games, a Watermelon Eating contest and water gun fights started the event off, along with the car show. The Charity softball game was a ton of fun, and raised close to $5,000 for Cornerstone and the Prosper Education Foundation. After an evening of fun, food and music was a spectacular fireworks display over the pond. Make plans to attend Pride in the Sky 2015 – it’ll be a BLAST!

In October, we celebrated the 1st Annual Prosper Pumpkinfest! Complete with hundreds of pumpkins, families enjoyed a hay maze, food and music. The highlight of the event were the Historic Hayrides with Bill Hays, Prosper’s historian. Mr. Hays rode for hours on the trailer and told great stories of the “old” Prosper history. Others decorated their pumpkins, enjoyed some great BBQ, played games and listened to music…and at the end of the evening, “Hotel Transylvania” was shown on the movie screen. A fun fall festival, this is sure to become a staple in your October events in 2015!

Cornerstone Christmas was again a huge success in 2014!! Close to 100 families were served, and it took the efforts of the entire town, local businesses, churches and volunteers to ensure that each child and family would have a magical Christmas. A wonderful day for all, families were able to “shop” for their children, their gifts were wrapped, trees and decorations were given, stockings were filled, groceries were given and every child received a coat. A day of giving and receiving…but most importantly, a day to remember the true meaning of Christmas. Our favorite day of the season!!

Cotton Gin Café

Keeps Town of Prosper’s Heritage Alive BY DELIA JO RAMSEY

The Gin Plater menu items behind the cash register. Don’t panic when you don’t see the breakfast items – they’re on a printed menu at the counter. Order at the front, pay, and have a seat. Go early for a seat on the weekends. But even during peak times, their service is friendly and prompt.

The Cotton Gin Café sits quietly on Prosper’s historic downtown block. Formerly a mercantile in Prosper’s early years, the present-day Cotton Gin Café instantly transports you back to the town’s roots. Inside these diner doors, Prosper once again feels like a farming town in its heyday, and no longer a booming suburb with houses being built all around. Booming residential suburb is wonderful and all, but guess what---suburbanites need to eat too! The Cotton Gin helps to meet that need by serving up breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the farmers of yesteryear as well as the new families and homeowners who are just moving in.

Cotton Gin serves southern, homestyle, comfort food. The vast breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu at Cotton Gin is by far the most affordably priced in the area. Free coffee refills keep some locals coming in daily to sip and chat.

Opened in 2001, Cotton Gin Café is a small town Texas diner owned by Sondra and Steve Channell, who have lived in Prosper for 20 years. The space is open and welcoming, with dark industrial floors, worn brick walls, and a massive back wall whiteboard chock-full of handwritten

Breakfast Omelet

The breakfast menu offers everything from egg whites and turkey sausage to omeletes, pancakes, French toast, a ‘Big Bale’ burrito, to a number of platters featuring a sampling of all they have to offer. If you’re feeling hungry you’ll surely appreciate the hearty chicken fried steak breakfast platter: two eggs, classic Texas hand-breaded chicken fried steak, hash browns, and your choice of toast or biscuit and gravy (hint: go for the biscuits they’re super soft and fluffy). Priced at 6.99, you simply cannot find a better deal for so much food. You can also order their

chicken fried steak at lunch or dinner. Breakfast is served until 10:30am Monday thru Friday and on Saturday until 11. Lunch and dinner menu are classic American foods, with appetizers like jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, fried pickles and mushrooms, and Texas toothpicks. Their locally famous burgers are handformed daily. Indulge in a bacon cheeseburger with a side of southwest ranch. Cotton Gin’s ranch and southwest ranch dipping sauces are so popular they now bottle and sell them for customers to take home in 16 and 32 ounce amounts. At dinner time you can nosh on pork chops, brisket, hamburger steak, catfish, shrimp, or chicken entrees. No item on their dinner menu exceeds 8.99, so you can conveniently dine out with your family without breaking the bank. Desserts of the day are worth checking out if you still have room after their generous meal portions. Highlight desserts include creamy sopapilla cheesecake, coconut cake, Italian cream cake, and pecan pie. Customers can also special order cakes and pies, just give them at least 24 hours advance notice. If you want to pretend for a moment that you don’t live in one of the fastest growing suburbs in the metroplex, head to downtown Prosper. Once you are seated in the 100 year old building the Cotton Gin Café calls home, you’ll be whisked back to the town’s humble farming days. Be sure and wave to all the people you pass on the way there. I’m passionate about keeping Prosper small, southern, and friendly, and the Cotton Gin Café is the perfect place to start.

Prosper Police Department “Rewards” Safe Drivers

Selected safe drivers in Prosper can expect to be rewarded with holiday spending money as the Police Department is once again rolling out the Gift Cards for Safe Drivers program, says Police Sergeant Bryan Golden, the department’s public information officer. “Every year, we get a great reception for the program,” he said. “And this year will expect to brighten the holidays of some lucky safe drivers once again.” Police officers who observed safe driving practices, especially within school zones and around campuses, approached selected drivers, while the vehicle was stopped, and complimented the driver by presenting them with a gift card, good at any retailer that accepts credit cards. The cards carried a cash value of $10. The program ran for one week from Monday, December 15 to Friday, December 19. “Even though drivers who follow traffic rules are already rewarded with fewer accidents, fewer citations, and the satisfaction of helping create a safe environment for everyone, a little extra cash is always welcome,” he said. “It’s our

way of saying thanks for being a good driver.” Police were on the lookout for drivers who followed traffic rules like wearing seat belts, avoiding the use of cell phones in school zones and maintaining the proper speed. Money for the program comes from the Police D e p a r t m e n t ’s contribution fund, money raised through community events and set aside for special expenditures. None of the funds for the program come from tax sources. “Of course, the vast majority of Prosper residents are aware of, and strictly follow, traffic laws. We

want to say thanks to a few of those who do so by giving them a small gesture of our appreciation,” said Golden. While the main focus was on those drivers who observe regulations in and around school zones, officers are always on the alert for safe drivers across Town.

It was also the boys’ job to keep the fires going in the winter time. It was considered a privilege if you were chosen to go outside and get a bucket of coal and bring in for the stove. // The STYLE

With CAITLIN SKIDMORE

Feeling like you have nothing to wear can hold you back from working out and taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Don’t let that boxy t-shirt and old sweatpants demotivate you another day! If you feel like you look good, it can give you the boost of confidence you need to walk into that gym, take that new class, or kill your workout. Use this step by step guide to build a workout wardrobe that will mix and match to create up to 14 outfits with just 6 pieces. First, choose a color palette you like. Here, we used grayscale pieces and chose a bright blue for a shot of color. Second, look for these pieces (some of which you may already have!):

1. A tank; 2. A tee; 3. A long sleeve top; 4. A long sleeve completer piece (like the black jacket); 5. A pair of shorts (a pair that comes to the knee is a great choice if you don’t want to show much leg); 6. A pair of pants; 7. A pair of shoes. Third, try on these combinations (the shoes are a given for each look): 1. tank, shorts 2. tank, pants 3. tank, long sleeve top, shorts 4. tank, long sleeve top, pants 5. tank, completer piece, shorts 6. tank, completer piece, pants 7. tee, shorts 8. tee, pants

Use these 7 pieces as a base, and add in more of what you need as you go. Do you get overheated? Add another tank. Play tennis? Add an athletic skirt into the mix. Pants that hit mid-calf or have a bootcut are also great options. Caitlin Skidmore is a Style Coach and is the author of Greater Than Rubies (greaterthanrubies.net), a life & style blog, where she teaches women how to remix their closets. Five Steps To Creating Lasting Health and Wellness in 2015 2015 is here and with the beginning of a new year many of us create resolutions related to our health and wellness. According to a 2014 study by the University of Scranton, 45% of Americans typically set a New Year’s resolution. Sadly, only 8% of us are successful in these goals. In January, yoga studios and gyms fill with individuals working toward two of the top 5 New Year’s resolutions: losing weight and getting in shape. As a yoga teacher, I work with individuals every year who want to create these positive changes in their lives. From my experience, there are a few critical things you can do to ensure lasting results. Here are five key steps to incorporate into your life to create true, lasting change.

32 Live & PROSPER Magazine | January 2015

1. Be realistic: Set an attainable goal. If your goal is to lose 100 pounds, set smaller goals that you can track. Perhaps you choose to lose 5 – 10 pounds each month. A more attainable goal keeps you focused on change you can easily measure. Or, if your goal is to focus on fitness, commit to working out 3-4 times a week. A goal of working out every day may be unrealistic when you try to add that into your already busy schedule of commitments. Overwhelming goals are quickly tossed to the side when they seem impossible. Keep your goals attainable and you’re more likely to stick with them!

2. With your resolution chosen, find ways to keep your goal in the front of your mind. Create a new screen saver for your computer that states your resolution as a positive intention. Instead of saying “I want to lose weight” state a positive affirmation such as “I am healthy.” This helps to cement the positive goal in your mind. You could also place this on your refrigerator, on a note in your car, or anywhere else that you regularly see. If you have multiple goals you are working toward in 2015, consider creating a vision board. There are great ideas for vision boards all over Pinterest. However you choose to do it, it’s important to keep your goals in the front of your mind.

3. Any day can be Monday. Have you ever caught yourself saying “I’ll start that diet on Monday?” If Monday doesn’t work out for you, Tuesday can be your Monday. When you’re ready to create change, don’t wait. Any day is the perfect day to start your new life. 4. Find a physical activity that you AND your body enjoy. Any physical activity that you enjoy is a great start. I’m a big fan of yoga though, because of the mental and physical components. Yoga is a great place to start if you’ve never been physically active or if you suffer from an injury that keeps you from your previous favorite exercise. The mental component of the yoga practice will assist you in keeping your goals in the front of your mind as well. It’s a perfect compliment to any physical fitness regimen. Try adding a gentle or hatha class to your schedule if you’re new to yoga. If you’re already lifting weights or attending a boot camp, try incorporating a few vinyasa or heated yoga classes into your routine to add flexibility, stability and stamina. There’s a yoga class for everyBODY. 5. Change takes time! Don’t give up when you make a mistake, eat that brownie or miss that yoga class. You are breaking through long-set patterns. Don’t expect perfection right away. It takes practice and consistency, but with your mind firmly focused on your goals, change will happen.
