4 Steps to Live in the Present Every Day
Living in the present means celebrating each moment as it happens without worries about the past or anxiety for what the future holds and enjoying life to the fullest. Many people find themselves thinking about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow, making living in the now a challenge.
You can overcome those hurdles and live each day more fully by adopting habits that promote physical and mental well-being, including these suggestions from the experts at Natrol, the No. 1 drug-free sleep aid brand, according to data from Nielsen.
REGULAR EXERCISE
You’ll find exercise on virtually every list of self-care advice, and for good reason. Exercise stimulates your body in numerous beneficial ways, not the least of which is getting your heart pumping and oxygen flowing throughout your body, including your brain. Exercise also pairs well with meditation or mindfulness activities, which allow you to align your body’s movement with your thoughts and focus on the act of nurturing your body while freeing your mind.
Getting quality sleep is linked to improved concentration and productivity, consciously managing your sleep habits can help you be more present each day. Creating a bedtime routine and establishing a comfortable, quiet sleeping environment are important steps. In addition, drug-free sleep aids like Natrol Melatonin products are designed to work with the body’s natural cycles and help users fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and wake up revitalized with a clearer, calmer mind†. Made with clean ingredients and no artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives, the line of melatonin products may help you rethink your relationship between sleep and living life to the fullest.
DEEP BREATHING
Focusing on the here and now can be easier said than done. However, it’s possible to train your body and mind to concentrate on specific thoughts and tasks. Deep breathing exercises are an example of physically focusing yourself. Initiating a slow, steady breathing pattern and paying close attention to that rhythm can be an effective way to ward off negativity, whether it’s fear, anxiety or another undesirable emotion. Managing your breathing gives you a degree of control that can help you navigate a tricky situation or establish a deeper connection between your body and mind.
TIME MANAGEMENT
For many people, the modern world’s frenetic lifestyle often demands constant multitasking. However, that continual juggling act makes it virtually impossible to give your full attention to any one aspect of your life. While a full stop to your multitasking tendencies may be impractical, you can carve out time to dedicate your mind more intentionally and completely. You may be surprised by how much joy you derive from simply being present.
Develop Healthy Sleep Habits
Healthy sleep begins with 7-9 hours of sleep a night, but there’s more you need to know to achieve the sleep you deserve. By getting the recommended amount of sleep and hitting all your sleep stages, you can wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to own the day.
Create healthy sleep habits. Establishing a consistent sleep-wake schedule helps regulate your circadian rhythms and increases your quality of sleep.
Avoid bright screens 60 minutes before bedtime. Exposure to bright LED lights such as smartphones, laptops and TV screens before bed can interfere with your body’s natural release of melatonin.
Consider taking a melatonin supplement. When you need a little extra nudge toward dreamland, melatonin may help you fall asleep and stay asleep so you wake up refreshed.
Create a calm and dark bedroom oasis. A dark, noise-free bedroom can help you sleep better throughout the night. Mask noise pollution with calming sounds and block out disruptive light with darkening curtains or a sleep mask.
Walk or exercise daily. Walking as little as 10 minutes a day can help improve sleep quality.
Helping Teens Develop Financial Literacy
Developing financial knowledge and effective money management habits are important steppingstones for teenagers to become financially stable adults who aspire to build assets and achieve personal goals.
For example, most teens (88%) would like to own a home someday, according to a survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement USA and Fannie Mae. The survey of 1,000 teens ages 13-17 in the United States found most (85%) believe “owning a home” is part of “the good life,” compared to nearly as many adults (87%). However, fewer than half (45%) could correctly identify the definition of a home mortgage and 76% said they lacked clear understanding of credit scores.
“There’s been this theme that younger Americans aren’t interested in homeownership, but the results of this survey contradict that assumption,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “Teens appear interested in owning a home someday but seem to realize they need more information on how to do it.”
To help teens gain a better understanding of financial decisions they’ll face in adulthood, consider these common terms.
Credit Score
While nearly all teens (96%) believe credit scores play an important role in the ability to purchase a home, approximately 3 in 4 (76%) said they understood credit scores only “somewhat,” “a little” or “not at all.” A credit score is a number from 300-850 based on a number of factors, including credit history, open accounts, total debt, repayment history and more. Lenders use credit scores to evaluate a person’s ability to repay loans.
A person’s credit score may also determine the size of a down payment needed when purchasing a smartphone or home, or the deposit needed for renting property or obtaining utilities and may impact interest rates and credit limits on credit cards. Generally, scores below 620 may require paying a higher rate, a shorter repayment term or a co-signer. Scores of 700 or higher are considered more favorable to creditors and may result in lower interest rates while scores higher than 800 typically provide the most benefits to consumers.
Mortgage
While a slight majority of white teens (52%) correctly identified the definition of a mortgage, only around a quarter (26%) of Black teens and fewer than half (41%) of Hispanic or Latino teens could do so. A mortgage is a type of loan used to purchase or maintain a home, land or other types of real estate. The borrower makes a down payment for a portion of the purchase price then borrows the rest from a lender. The borrower then repays the lender over a number of years – typically 15-30 – via a series of regular payments that are divided into principal (the money originally borrowed) and interest with the property serving as security.
Nearly all teens surveyed (97%) thought it would be helpful if schools offered lessons that explained homeownership, including mortgages. In response, Fannie Mae is supporting the development and deployment of Junior Achievement learning experiences for thousands of students annually in various age groups by integrating relevant content from its HomeView homeownership course materials and resources, which are designed with first-time homebuyers in mind.
“Young people today are the homebuyers of tomorrow,” said Jeffery Hayward, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Fannie Mae. “By providing them access to quality, foundational education now, Fannie Mae and Junior Achievement are helping these future homeowners prepare for the mortgage and homebuying process when they’re ready to take that step.
Town Hall Honor Walls
New Prosper Honor Wall Dedication Ceremony and Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run
The Town of Prosper hosted a special Honor Walls Dedication Ceremony at Prosper Town Hall, 250 W. First St., on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11. These new Honor Walls were constructed in honor of Prosper residents and Town staff who have served their country and public servants who serve the community. The ceremony will include remarks by Town officials and a dedication of the Town Hall Honor Walls.
The idea to honor military members and public safety personnel with a public structure originated in 2019. With Town Council support, the Honor Walls project was funded in FY 2021-2022 and construction was completed in October 2022. The Honor Wall to the west includes a cast emblem for each military branch: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard. Police and Fire Department emblems are displayed on the eastern Honor Wall. Randall Scott Architects, designer of Town Hall, also designed the Honor Walls.
Dan Baker, Director of Parks and Recreation, said “The Town of Prosper is excited to be able to honor those who serve this country and this community. We invited the community to join us at the Honor Walls Dedication event and Prosper’s first annual Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run.”
In addition to the Honor Walls Ceremony, a new Prosper Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run was held on Saturday, November 12. This new Veterans 5K and Fun Run added a fitness component to the patriotic weekend which continued the salute to the men and women who have served in our nation’s military. Open to all ages and abilities, the 5K and Fun Run welcomed everyone! Seasoned runners and walkers, beginning runners, children, stroller-pushing parents, and those who use wheelchairs were encouraged to sign up for either event. A short program honoring veterans was held at 8:00am, followed by the 5K at 8:30a.m. and the one-mile Fun Run at 9:00a.m.
Any proceeds from the Prosper Veterans Day 5K & Fun Run will go to benefit the Veterans Memorial, slated for construction at a future date at Frontier Park. A clean and inviting home doesn’t just look tidy, it smells pleasantly refreshing, too. However, running a household can be a stinky business and it may take some special effort to make your living spaces feel more welcoming. Consider these sensible ideas to improve the scents throughout your home:
BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
Fresh air is a terrific option for banishing bad smells. Throwing open windows creates a cross breeze that can chase stale, musty air away in a hurry. You can also improve your air quality by adding house plants, which naturally help purify the air by absorbing pollutants and exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen. Plants like jasmine, eucalyptus and gardenias also offer their own pleasant scents.
REFRESH SOFT SURFACES
Textiles and other soft surfaces throughout your home easily trap odor-causing bacteria, dust and other particles that can contribute to unsavory smells. That’s why it’s a good idea to regularly give the rugs, carpet, bedding, throw pillows, curtains and other soft surfaces throughout your home a deep cleaning. If you can’t machine wash an item, use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove as many hidden particles as possible.
INSTALL A HEATED TOWEL RACK
Damp spaces like bathrooms are breeding grounds for bacteria. If you notice a musty smell in the bathroom but can’t pinpoint the source, it may be your towel. That’s especially true if, like many people, you reuse a towel several times before washing it. Hang-drying your towel may not be enough to chase away smell-inducing bacteria. However, the growth of bacteria is reduced on heat-dried towels by as much as 99%, according to a study commissioned by Amba Products. What’s more, in the study, a heat-dried towel produced a fresh smell over a seven-day period, whereas an unheated sample produced a musty odor by the fourth day.
With a variety of styles and finishes to fit almost any decor, the line of heated towel racks produces radiant heat to gently warm and dry towels. That can help eliminate moisture, resulting in less growth of mold and mildew. They also offer time, water and energy savings, plus some models come ready to use and take as little as 5 minutes to set up.
SIMMER FRESH AROMAS
If you need to add a pleasant scent in a hurry, such as just before hosting a special event for guests, consider simmering something that smells delicious on the stove. Simmering a blend of orange slices, cloves and cinnamon in a pot of water over low heat produces a subtle, pleasing scent that doesn’t overpower the room. Diffusers, candles and room sprays can also help add appealing smells in rooms that may need some extra attention.
CLEAN COMMON CULPRITS
Every household has some common culprits and, if you’re noticing smells, you may need to step up your game to keep these areas clean. Trash cans, litter boxes and pet beds all need regular attention that goes beyond the basics. Make a point of not only emptying the trash but also cleaning the trash can itself. Don’t just scoop the litter box. Replace the entire pan at least weekly. Strip and wash the exterior covering of pet beds and air out the cushion.
Keeping your home clean and smelling great does not have to be complicated. Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule and incorporating ways to purify and enhance the air can make the space more enjoyable. To get your home refresh started, visit ambaproducts.com.

Understanding Uses of Landscape Lighting
Lighting is a critical part of any home, especially on the exterior. Illuminating your client›s landscape is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, providing a clear path, and transforming an outdoor space from drab and dark to classy and bright. Residential landscape lighting design can bring new value to a home in so many ways. In this article, we’ll cover some of the benefits of landscape lighting that you can go over with your clients as well as the different types of landscape lighting.
BENEFITS OF LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
There are many benefits to adding lights to your clients’ properties. Helping your clients to understand these benefits will help to sell them on landscape lighting. Here are some benefits that you can share.
Stand out from your Neighbors
Lighting adds a unique aspect to a home or business that can make you stand out, especially at night. It’s important to make sure people can see your house, driveway, storefront, or sidewalk at all times of the day or night.
Make the Architectural Features Pop
Have a feature you’d like to show off, such as a garden or fountain? Lighting can subdue surrounding elements and make the main features pop.
Provide an Extra Layer of Security
Whether for your home or business, lights provide safety and serve as a guide to the
driveway, sidewalk, or parking lot. If they are motion sensored, they can also alert you to people or animals who approach your area.
Increase Your Home’s Value
Prospective homeowners often look at the landscape to see how well-lit a house is. Landscape lighting is a desirable aspect of homes and can increase your home’s value.
WHAT’S AVAILABLE FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING?
Each home looks good with a different type of lighting—and the options are quite varied. Comparing the pros and cons of different types in relation to your client’s home and landscape can help you choose the perfect lighting.
Bright White or Yellow Light?
This may seem obvious, but lights come in different colors, often based on their type such as LED, halogen, etc. Not every color goes with every landscape, so it’s important to look at the colors of your house and yard and possibly test out some lights before making a final decision.
Motion Sensor or Manual Sensor?
When considering the placement of outdoor lights, you may want to consider whether they should be motion sensored or not. Motion sensors save energy by only turning on when they detect movement. However, if your clients need an important part of their house or storefront always lit up (such as a set of stairs or a business awning), manually turning on the
lights would be a better option. You can also program most outdoor lights to go on and off at a certain time. Light timers are easy to install and can save you the trouble of turning the lights on manually.
Solar Powered or Hard Wired?
Whether or not your clients have solar panels on your roof, your outdoor lights can be solar-powered or wired. Many individual types of lighting can be powered by the sun, charging up during the day to brighten the night. While using solar-powered lights may reflect positively on your client’s electrical bill, it’s entirely your client’s preference which option makes the most sense.
Weather-Proof Lights
Weather-proof and winter-proof lights are durable and ensure that your client’s lights are protected during all seasons and last longer.
Spotlights or Floodlights?
Spotlights and floodlights are similar, but with a key difference in beam spread. Spotlights have a narrower beam of light, while floodlights have a wider beam. If you want to highlight a specific area of your landscape, spotlights are the way to go. Conversely, floodlights are better for lighting up a general area, such as a driveway.
Outdoor Post Lights vs. Path Lights
Post lights and outdoor lamp fixtures help illuminate paths without the strength of floodlights or other types. Instead, they accent the path, and their wide beams stretch over
Inground Lighting
Inground lights are installed directly into the ground, giving a more modern vibe than other types of lighting. They are typically circle-shaped and used to brighten up walkways and patios. While they’re not good for highlighting specific display points, they pair well with spotlights in order to draw attention to certain aspects of your client’s landscape.
Functional Deck and Step Lighting
Deck and step lights not only look appealing, but they also increase safety. They are installed directly into the decking or staircase, making them discreet yet essential.
Pond lights
If you have a water fixture you want to illuminate, pond lights are the way to go. Embedded in the water itself, these lights add a cool ambiance to any landscape.
Hardscape lights
Relatively new to the landscape lighting scene, hardscape lights use LED technology that can wash or graze walls with light. They are less intense than other types of lighting but no less aesthetically pleasing. In addition to these types of light, there are different methods you can use to illuminate your client’s landscape. Up Lighting, Silhouette Lighting, and Shadow Lighting are a few methods to brighten certain aspects of your home or yard, generally with the help of spotlights or inground lights.
Up-Lighting is used as an accent to architectural features and is usually installed in the ground, a deck, or a staircase.
Silhouette Lighting highlights dramatic features, using a light placed behind the feature and aimed toward the main vantage point to create a silhouette effect.
Shadow Lighting is the opposite of silhouetting, which means the light must be placed between the feature you want to highlight and the main vantage point, with the light aimed at the feature. This best works when there is a wall or flat surface behind the feature being lit. Until next time Happy Gardening!

Thanksgiving Traditions and Memory-Making Meals
Starting with parades and ending with family meals, Thanksgiving provides all-day opportunities for celebrating life’s special moments with those nearest and dearest to your heart. Waking up to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a tradition that brings smiles and happiness for many families, and this year, an iconic brand will join the festivities. Since 1921, Wonder Bread has captured the “wonder” its founder Elmer Cline experienced when first watching a hot air balloon race. It’s often credited with the popularization of sliced bread in the United States and now, for the first time, its legacy will be on display November 24 parading through the streets of New York City.
To celebrate the special occasion and the joy that Thanksgiving brings, you can enjoy Turkey Cranberry Dinner Rolls as a delicious homemade meal that’s as easy to make as it is to share. If you’re searching for a tasty side that’ll leave your loved ones stuffed, look no further than this Thanksgiving Stuffing, a classic accompaniment to holiday meals and a favorite of home chefs across the country.

DELIGHTFUL DISHES TO DAZZLE HOLIDAY GUESTS
Entertaining guests during the holidays isn’t just about a main course that calls all to the table. What often makes a festive gathering more fruitful is a spread of delicious appetizers, delightful drinks and divine desserts that keep loved ones coming back to the kitchen for more.
For appetizing dishes from the first guest at the house to the last out the door, you can heighten the flavor and appearance of favorite recipes with one simple ingredient: apples. Ranging from tart to sugary sweet, finding the right balance for your palate is key. Scent can also influence taste, especially when you have a balanced sweetness with an uplifting, fresh aroma.
Turn to an option like Envy Apples this holiday season for satisfying texture and taste with a consistently balanced, refreshing sweetness coupled with a crisp, elegant crunch. They make for an easy snack when eaten fresh out of hand but are also perfect for holding over pre-dinner appetites in small plates like this Bell-Issimo Brie Melt or Apple Stuffing Bites with Rosemary Gravy.
The versatile flavor of apples isn’t just limited to foods, however. For the adults in the room, Pumpkin Spice Apple Cider with a splash of bourbon is a seasonally appropriate way to quench thirst and break the ice. Simply omit the bourbon for a kid-friendly version so the whole party can savor a sip.
Easy to spot with their crimson red skin over a golden background that practically glows, Envy Apples offer an easy, eye-catching way to try new tastes and celebrate joyful occasions together. The bright white flesh is naturally slow to brown when sliced for a fresher flavor in sweet treats like Apple Oat Crumble and Citrus Caramel Topping for a tasty way to elevate your holiday get-togethers. Healthy Winter Habits to Maintain Health
Another cough and cold season calls for healthy preparation, and while there may not be a foolproof plan for escaping pesky germs, taking preventive steps and practicing self-care can help protect your health. You can catch a cold or flu any time of the year, but they seem more common during the cooler months.
“As much as we all would love a quick cure for the common cold, unfortunately, that doesn’t exist,” said Ian K. Smith, MD. “However, there are many options one can try to relieve cold and flu symptoms, including over-the-counter medications. These medications can provide fast and much-needed relief.”
Reduce the chances you’ll contract a serious illness this cold season by following these tips from the experts at Mucinex:
Make handwashing a priority. Preventive measures like washing your hands often can significantly lower your odds of getting sick. In fact, handwashing is such a powerful tool against germs that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compared it to a “do-it-yourself vaccine.” Wash regularly with soap and water for about 20 seconds, especially when handling food, caring for someone sick or after using the restroom.
Make overall wellness a way of life. Adopting healthy everyday habits means your body is in better condition to fight off potential attacks by germs and combat an illness more effectively if you do get sick. A well-balanced diet that includes moderate portions from each of the major food groups can help ensure you’re getting the nutrition and nutrients your body needs. Staying physically active can help promote a stronger immune system. Getting enough sleep and making sure you’re drinking enough water can also ensure your body is ready for whatever the season brings.
Stock up on necessary supplies. If you do get sick, the best place for you is at home, where you can nurse yourself back to health. That means having the essentials on hand, like over-the-counter medications to treat uncomfortable cold and flu symptoms. Be sure to check last year’s leftovers, as some may have expired. A shopping list to fight common cold and flu symptoms should include pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants, antihistamines, throat lozenges and cough suppressants, as well as plenty of facial tissue, a working thermometer, humidifier and more. Also update your supply of hand sanitizer and disinfecting cleaners and sprays to protect family members in your home.
Relieve bothersome symptoms. When you’re under the weather, treating your symptoms gives you a reprieve and lets your body rest so you can get back to feeling better. A cough is a common cold symptom, and relieving chest congestion that causes you to cough frequently can make a big difference. An option like Mucinex Extended-Release Bi-Layer Tablets, with the No. 1 pharmacist recommended expectorant, is clinically proven to relieve chest congestion and thin and loosen mucus to make your cough more productive for up to 12 hours. If symptoms persist, contact your health care professional.
Do your part to prevent spreading germs. If you do get sick, know you can take steps to protect those around you. Simple acts like covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and using your elbow if you don’t have a tissue can be effective in preventing the spread of germs. It’s also important to wash your hands well and keep a distance from others to help prevent the spread of your illness. Find

Not to worry, this can be incorporated into any dinner setting, from formal affairs to sweatpant-friendly gettogethers. Always look for stylish items that have plenty of stretch, from dresses to leggings and sweaters. And yes, even jeans. Stockings with metallic detail will add a touch of sparkle to your elevated look. Who says you can’t glimmer and gobble until you wobble?
While dresses are the obvious choice for what to wear to a formal Thanksgiving dinner, they’re not your only option. To shake things up, don’t be afraid to try a fashion-forward jumpsuit in lieu of a fancy frock. A plethora of shoes pair well with jumpsuits, so look no further than what you have already in your closet. Finish your dignified Thanksgiving outfit with a pair of t-strap heels and chunky gold jewelry for an impressive holiday look. Remember, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed for stately soirées.
WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR BOYFRIEND’S THANKSGIVING DINNER
Holidays spent with your significant other’s family can pose, perhaps, the biggest dilemma when wondering what to wear for Thanksgiving. From meeting your partners’ family for the first time to celebrating with your in-laws, you want to make a good impression. As a general rule of thumb, it’s important to wear something that isn’t too distracting. Classic black pants are a timeless option for what to wear to your boyfriend’s Thanksgiving dinner, no matter the formality. This year, opt for the wide-leg pant trend to strike a balance between appropriate and trendy. Tuck in a jewel-tone blouse or turtleneck sweater and add festive flair with animal print flats.
Stylist Tip: Spending the long weekend at your other half’s family home? Score extra etiquette points by bringing a hostess gift like flowers, a sweet treat, or a seasonal candle. You can’t go wrong with pumpkin spice and everything nice.
WHAT TO WEAR TO A FAMILY THANKSGIVING DINNER
Thanksgiving dinner traditions can look different for every family. Whether you’re hosting at home or headed to see out-of-town relatives, you’ll want to feel your best. Thinking about what to wear to a family Thanksgiving dinner that’ll score you a seat at the adult’s table? A flowy, floral print dress is a foolproof Thanksgiving outfit that’s sure to impress. An option with a tiered skirt will add extra flounce, giving you comfort and style all at once. A real MVP of the holiday, if you ask us. Flat over-the-knee boots and a stack of beaded bracelets will complete your casual, yet classy look.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR FRIENDSGIVING
As the old saying goes, friends are the family you choose. A Friendsgiving get-together is a marvelous way to celebrate this chosen family. Typically a bit more casual, these gatherings are the time to rock your best relaxed looks. At the top of our list for what to wear for Thanksgiving with friends is a pair of refined joggers. Not only are they one of our favorite Fall 2021 trends for women, but the elastic waistband is second-helping friendly. Keep your joggers fashion-forward by pairing them with a plaid menswear blazer or an of-the-moment fall shacket. Either one will come in handy for dining al fresco this year.
STAY COMFY IN TRIED-AND-TRUE LEGGINGS
Leggings are another casual Thanksgiving outfit go-to. You didn’t think we’d forget this dinner-friendly staple as an option for what to wear for Friendsgiving, did you? Pair them with your coziest sweater or cardigan and add on an eye-catching accessory like beaded chandelier earrings. Keep your footwear choice comfortable with fashion sneakers or ballet flats—they’re wellsuited for that post-meal walk around the neighborhood.
WHAT COLORS TO WEAR ON THANKSGIVING
We’ve narrowed down the top choices for styles. Now it’s time to talk about what colors to wear on Thanksgiving. Take cues straight from the dinner table. Pumpkin is the obvious choice, so reach for a burnt orange pullover or blouse to perfectly coordinate with the season. Mustard yellow, chocolate brown, cranberry and deep olive are all autumnal favorites that will have you standing out in style. Are neutrals more your speed? Navy is a fall-ready base color when planning what to wear for Thanksgiving. Plus, it’ll help to hide any spills throughout the night. Accent with fall-ready metallics like gold and copper to really dazzle this Thanksgiving.

Pediatrician-Approved Tips to Conquer Holiday Travel with Little Ones
The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it can often bring stress for parents of young children with the amount of “newness” in each experience, particularly when it comes to seasonal travel.
To help make holiday travel with little ones more manageable – whether traveling by bus, train, car or plane – Dr. Whitney Casares, MD, MPH, pediatric medical consultant for Gerber, offers this guidance for families.
TRAVEL LIGHT
Especially if traveling by plane, pack as light as possible (or check most of your luggage) so you have less to maneuver through security gates and on the plane. However, for longer trips, packing small, developmentally appropriate toys and snacks can provide perfect entertainment for little ones.
PREPARE FOR EAR PRESSURE
Babies often scream during takeoff and landing on flights because they can’t easily equalize the pressure in their eustachian tubes, the connection between their ears and the back of the throat. When you’re ascending and descending, give your baby something safe to suck on, like a pacifier, to reduce the buildup of pressure in the ears. Taking small sips of water, breastmilk or formula and yawning are also ways to help babies and toddlers experiencing ear pressure during flights.
PLAN FOR TIME ADJUSTMENTS
For long trips that include time zone changes, expect children to take several days to grow accustomed to their new schedules. Plan an extra day or two for that time adjustment, if possible, when mapping out your trip and make time for stops to stretch, snack, and take bathroom breaks.
PACK CONVENIENT SNACKS
Having easy-to-access snacks that don’t make a large mess can make travel easier and less stressful. For example, Gerber Plant-Tastic Banana
BRING SANITIZING PRODUCTS
Having your own sanitizing wipes on-hand makes it easier to freshen up often-touched surfaces in public spaces like seatback trays, chairs, and tables. While safe on most hard surfaces, check the label before using the wipes then allow the area to dry completely before letting your child touch it. Warm, soapy water can also be used to clean toys and other personal products.
MAINTAIN A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE
Keeping your child on his or her normal schedule during the holidays isn’t always feasible and a few imperfections are to be expected during the busy season. However, if your baby’s feeding or sleep schedule does get thrown off by holiday events, try to return to a consistent routine as soon as possible. Be patient with yourself and your little one as you both adjust.
BE MINDFUL OF ANXIETY
While attending holiday gatherings, your child may become overwhelmed when meeting new people, including family members. Babies start to develop separation anxiety and apprehension to strangers at about 6 months old as their brains start to understand the concept of object permanence (that something still exists when it is not present). Educating loved ones about this developmental stage can help you feel less anxious about big family gatherings with your little one. If your child is particularly sensitive, try introducing new people in smaller cohorts, as opposed to introducing him or her to the whole group at once.
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF
While traveling with little ones can be a “bumpy road,” it’s important for parents to also try and enjoy the holidays as much as possible. Making some time for yourself – taking deep breaths, listening to a meditation on an option like the Calm app or playing a favorite song, for example – can help you recharge and relax ahead of a big event.
