A SUNNY NEW SPACE & NEW GRANT FOR LIU BROOKLYN’S FUN AFTER SCHOOL & EVENING PROGRAM The Family University (FUN) After School & Evening Program on LIU’s Brooklyn Campus is excited to announce its move to a new location within the School of Education. FUN was awarded a new four-year grant in October 2017 through the Federal Department of Education’s Child Care Access Means Parents in Schools (CCAMPIS) Program. With this grant we are able to continue to serve student-parents on LIU’s Brooklyn Campus in a new, colorful, light-filled space. The program is a center of art, play, creativity, and learning outside the classroom setting for the children of income-eligible students enrolled at LIU Brooklyn. It offers daily and inquiry-based enrichment activities, homework help, tutoring and nutritious family-style dinners and snacks. A current student-parent wrote, “The FUN program has literally saved my life and my degree. I attend my classes with peace of mind knowing that my daughter is not only safe but has the opportunity to be as productive as I am in class with all the fun programs she gets to partake in while in after school. She absolutely loves the staff and her friends there, and the care and attention she gets—from her homework to her social and emotional well being—is phenomenal.” FUN is open Monday - Thursday from 3:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. during fall & spring semesters and serves children in grades K-7. STATISTICALLY-BASED PHARMACEUTICAL QUALITY STANDARDS FDA PROJECT The Lachman Institute is leading a grant with the FDA and Purdue University to develop a statistical and analytical strategy to more accurately determine drug product quality. The three-year, $2,000,000 grant uses advanced statistical tools and analytical methods to assess the variability in key tablet properties including how fast they dissolve and the uniformity of the amount of drug in each tablet. The project examines a range of products from many companies with the goal of modernizing industry guidance to accelerate the time to market and to help control drug prices. The project is led by Drs. Morris and Dave at LIU, Dr. Reklaitis at Purdue, and coordinated by Dr. Qing Cai (pictured above) with her team of six LIU graduate students.
