LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT

UNIVERSITY MACE

The University mace is 37 inches long and weighs about eight pounds. It is made of sterling silver throughout and is partly gold-plated. The head consists of four vaulted arches, each displaying a gold-plated campus emblem. The arches are joined by a drum that carries the inscription “LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY 1926.” The drum is surmounted by a goldplated lighthouse with four “lenses” to indicate that the University is located on an island. As a lighthouse beacon guides the seafarer through the sea in darkness, so the University provides the guiding light of knowledge out of the darkness of ignorance. On top of the lighthouse is the logo of the University: the map of Long Island in the colors of the rainbow rendered in champlevé enamels. Below the head of the mace, a short textured neck leads to the hammered shaft. At the lower end is a pear-shaped node into which is recessed the gold-plated engraved seal of the University.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER AND HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

STEVE BANDROWCZAK ’89 Mr. Steven Bandrowczak’s ‘89 extraordinary career journey has taken him from modest beginnings to executive roles in technology and operations leadership. Following a training program offered by Grumman Data Systems and earning his degree in computer science from LIU after taking courses at night, Steve joined what would eventually become Avnet. There he drove the company’s infrastructure toward efficiency and scalability over a 14-year career that culminated as the company’s Global Chief

Information Officer. Widely considered an expert in IT and operations management, he held positions with DHL, Lenovo, Nortel, and Hewlett Packard before joining Xerox as President and eventually Chief Executive Officer. Steve holds degrees from Long Island University and Columbia University and both lectures and serves as Executive-in-Residence at Northeastern University.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

EVELYN A. CONNALLY ‘69 Evelyn “Lyn” Connally, was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Westchester. She attended the University of Georgia, the alma mater of her late father, from which she received a degree in Education in 1960. Evelyn taught elementary school in the Westchester public school system during which time she also received a Master’s degree from New York University as well as a Masters in Library and Information Science from Long Island University’s Post campus in 1969. She moved to Atlanta and worked as a school librarian in the 1970s and

worked for a local organization in the 1980s until her retirement. Since then, Evelyn has been a member of an investment club and a history study group.

She has been active in philanthropic organizations, including the Daughters of the British Empire. Evelyn is a generous contributor to each of her alma maters and says that her philanthropy is inspired by a gift her father received to attend college.
