Ten reasons to live in York You’ve probably seen the pretty pictures of York Minster and you might even have visited the JORVIK Viking Centre on a school trip, but there’s a lot more to York than just heritage and tourism. Here are just a few reasons why York is a great place to raise a family.

York was voted Best Place to Live by the Sunday Times in 2018, was shortlisted again in 2021, and it’s the 8th most popular destination to move to in 2021 according to Rightmove.

It’s a compact city that’s small enough to be walkable and have a good sense of community but large enough to have plenty going on.

There’s always something to do, with festivals and events throughout the year, from the JORVIK Viking Festival to York Ice Trail and the Yorkshire Balloon Fiesta.

Why commuters choose York With the rise of Zoom and working from home, commuting may eventually become a thing of the past. But if you do need to travel to work, rest assured that York’s well connected by road and rail.

Here are just some of the reasons why many people commute from York, to Leeds, London and many other places besides: (1) It's under two hours on the train from York to London.

There are regular rail services to Leeds, Harrogate, Edinburgh, Manchester, Hull, Scarborough and Middlesborough.

York station is well served by buses for onward connections.

There’s a popular CityZap commuter bus from York to Leeds.

For car-based commuters, the A1, M1, A64, A19 and A1079 are all within easy reach.

Bikes, Buses and Automobiles Travelling around York For a city of York’s size, there’s a surprising number of ways to get around (and more sustainable and eco-friendly options arriving all the time).

Travelling by car Travelling by car is often the most expensive and slow way to get around York, with car parking on the steep side and the old streets often getting gridlocked at peak times or on rainy days.

If you’re moving somewhere with on-street parking only, find out whether you need a parking permit for your car and apply to the council so you are covered as soon as possible.

Taking the bus Most of York is extremely well served by bus, and you’ll find all of the bus timetables are available on the iTravel York website (itravelyork.info). If you have to drive to York for work or fun, why not park at one of the Park and Ride sites and let the bus driver navigate the city centre traffic? There are even secure cycle lockers at the sites if you’d prefer to park and pedal!

Getting around by bike York is considered to be bike-friendly, with lots of cycle routes to and within the city, and plenty of bike parking places, too. If you need to brush up on your cycling skills, the City of York Council run an urban cycle skills course (visit itravelyork.info) for more information.

Cycle Heaven is a local chain of independent bike shops where you can buy and hire bikes and get your bike serviced (cycleheaven.co.uk). Get Cycling is the place to go for family and inclusive cycling options and to hire a range of family-friendly bikes, cargos and more (getcycling.org.uk).

For a family-friendly, car-free cycle route, you can’t beat the York to Naburn solar system route (more info on the iTravel York website).

Navigating York on foot York is the ideal size for walking around, whether you’re travelling into York for the day or you’re a resident who lives within walking distance of the city. Much of the city centre is pedestrianised, making it a safe and comfortable place to walk around.

There are many lovely walks around York too, around nature reserves, woods and forests. Visit the Little Vikings website where you’ll find a selection of our favourite walks.

Other options Some of the villages, such as Poppleton, are lucky enough to have their own little railway station. Keep an eye out for a growing electric offer within the city, from electric buses to escooters, ebikes and charging points.

is the question. Given the cost and stresses involved, it might be tempting to cut out the number of moves and jump straight into buying a property if funds allow. On the other hand, renting for a little while first will give you time to check out the areas, settle into working and family life and work out what you really want from your next home.

For what it’s worth, we rented for a year when we relocated back to York and ended up settling in an area that we wouldn’t otherwise have considered (and we couldn’t be happier). If you do decide to rent, York has plenty of excellent rental properties that will be a great base while you decide where you want to end up.

York Area Guide 10 places that are popular with families moving to York Whether you’d like to be walking distance from the buzz of York city centre or you’re craving the community and tranquility of village life, there’s an area of York to suit your needs.

Close to the centre, Bootham, Bishopthorpe Road and South Bank, Heworth, Holgate and Clifton are popular with families who want to be close to the action, near to the station or would like to limit the time they spend as taxi driver to their children.

Further afield, the villages of Poppleton, Haxby and Wigginton, Copmanthorpe, Huntington, Osbaldwick, Fulford, Dunnington, Elvington, Escrick and Wheldrake offer a good balance to those who’d like the benefits of a village without being too far from the action.

Where shall we live in York?

Five things to ask yourselves (1) Transport links Do you need access to the railway station? Or a particular bus or cycle route? Or would you like to be able to do most of your journeys by foot? Do you want easy access to the coast or countryside at the weekend?

(2) Schools and nurseries If you’ll need childcare for younger children, check whether there is a good nursery nearby (and contact them for details of any waiting list). For older children, do your research into catchment areas and ratings for the local schools.

(3) Nearby facilities Would you like a grocery store within walking distance? Or are you happy to rely on online deliveries/travelling to the shop by car/bike/bus? Do you want to be near a local cafe, gym, pub or venue that hosts children’s classes? Think about how far you’re willing to travel to get to the places that are important to you and your family

(4) Outdoor space As a general rule, the closer you live to York city centre, the smaller your outdoor space will be. Would you be happy with a small garden or yard, or would you prefer more outdoor space?

(5) Parks and playgrounds Even if you choose to live somewhere with a garden, there’s a lot to be said for having a local park nearby for a change of scenery.

Why move to

Acomb?

If you’d like everything on your doorstep, Acomb is just the place. The small but thriving high street is ideal for everyday essentials, and it’s a great place to hunt for treasure thanks to the many charity shops.

Acomb Explore is an excellent library for families, with a well-stocked children’s section, lovely cafe and regular kids’ activities and classes. There’s a variety of housing stock that tends to be good value for York. The city centre is just a couple of miles away and there are regular bus services throughout the day.

Local gems Yorkies travel from afar to visit The Acomb Greengrocer for its delicious selection of local delicacies. Energise Leisure Centre is the place to get fit, with a 25 metre swimming pool, climbing wall, children’s sports classes and pitches and courts galore.

Schools Local primary schools include Acomb Primary, Westfield Primary, Carr Junior and Infant School and Hob Moor Community Primary Academy. The main secondary school is York High School, with Millthorpe School and Manor CE Academy not too far away.

Green spaces Green Flag Award-winning West Bank Park is a beautiful 20-acre park between Holgate and Acomb. Children will enjoy the play area, and there’s plenty of woodland to explore too, as well as a basketball court and picnic area. Follow The Friends of West Bank Park on social media to find out about the latest events and activities for families. Acomb Wood is York’s newest nature reserve and there’s a nice 20 minute circular walk - keep your eyes out for local wildlife!

What the locals say ‘We chose Acomb because it’s an up-and-coming area where we knew we’d get more for our money. There are some really nice houses, lots of green spaces around and we’ve got everything we need on our doorstep. The library (Acomb Explore) is brilliant for little ones’.

Why move to

Bishopthorpe?

If it’s good enough for the Archbishop, it’s good enough for you! Bishopthorpe is a beautiful village three miles south of York city centre, close to the river Ouse and home to Bishopthorpe Palace, residence of the Archbishop of York.

With numerous pubs, a smattering of local shops, library, hairdressers and more, there’s very little you’ll need to go into York for. If you do, there’s a regular bus service and an easy cycle route.

Local gems The Marcia Inn is a popular spot for Sunday lunch - chill out in the beer garden with the kids and keep your fingers crossed for some Yorkshire sunshine (and Yorkshire puddings).

Schools Archbishop of York CE Junior School, Bishopthorpe Infant School, Bishopthorpe pre-school.

For secondary, Bishopthorpe is in the catchment area for Millthorpe School, Tadcaster Grammar and Fulford School.

Green spaces Bishopthorpe is perfectly located for walks by the river and in the countryside, but there’s also a large play area with good equipment.

What the locals say ‘It’s very friendly, with countryside walks from the door. Love that it’s close to the Archbishop’s Palace, not to mention the fantastic schools, pubs, library, Post Office, Co-op, chemist and delis…’

Why move to

Bishopthorpe Road & South Bank?

Winner of the Great British High Street Award, Bishopthorpe Road and the surrounding areas of Clementhorpe and South Bank are very popular with families. It’s a short walk to the station and into the city centre, and the bustling high street is packed with lovely independent cafes and shops.

Local gems The Pig & Pastry cafe on Bishy Road is legendary among locals. Famed for its brunches, great coffee and warm, friendly welcome, it’s easy to see why it attracts queues of loyal followers who’ll wait in all weathers for their Pig fix. Too busy? Trinacria is an authentic Sicilian restaurant serving amazing gelato, and Robinson’s is a brilliant place for brunch, too.

Schools Scarcroft School and Knavesmire School are the two main primaries, while Millthorpe School and All Saints RC School are the secondary options.

Green spaces Rowntree Park is one of York’s best, with two play areas, basketball and tennis courts, skate park and ornamental lake with friendly ducks. The Rowntree Park Reading Cafe is a lovely place to stop for breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake, and it’s firmly family-friendly. The nearby Knavesmire (also the location of York Racecourse) is popular with runners, cyclists and dogwalkers, and it’s also home to one of the York parkruns.

What the locals say ‘We love everything about the area. Bishy Road is an amazing high street to have on our doorstep, and it’s great to be just a short walk from the city centre. The proximity to the Knavesmire, river Ouse and station is brilliant too - it’s worth the trade-off of a small garden!

There’s a lovely community atmosphere and it’s easy to make friends’.

Why move to

Bootham & Clifton?

Bootham and, slightly further out, Clifton, are both popular areas to live in York.

As well as having a good variety of housing, the main benefit is just how close you are to York city centre: it’s a short walk or bus ride to the theatre, Museum Gardens and all the shops and restaurants that make York a wonderful place to live.

Local gems Bootham itself has some lovely independent places that children will love, from the Rainbows Ceramics pottery painting studio to the Blue House Book Shop. You’re close to Gillygate, too, which has more indie shops and eateries than you can shake an artisan baguette at.

Schools Local primaries include Clifton Green, Clifton with Rawcliffe, Lakeside, Park Grove School, St Wilfrid’s and Burton Green. For secondary, Vale of York Academy and Joseph Rowntree School are the main options. In terms of independent schools, Bootham and Clifton are ideally placed for Bootham School and St Peter’s School, both of which are for ages 3 to 18.

Green spaces Homestead Park is a beautiful green space, with two play areas for children of all ages, plenty of space to kick a ball, stunning gardens and a pop-up cafe at peak times. It’s also a short walk to the river if you’d like to watch the boats go by.

What the locals say 'Homestead Park is on our doorstep, we’ve got river walks and the ings to run off steam. We’re also a hop away from Clifton Moor: 25 minutes’ walk or 5 minutes on the bus! Great selection of schools in walking distance. For us and our three kids, it’s a fantastic place to live!’

Why move to

Fulford?

Fulford is well known for its schools, but there’s a lot more than that to recommend it including a selection of local pubs and shops and excellent transport links. It’s within easy reach of the A64 to Leeds and the coast, but walking distance into York. York Designer Outlet is on the doorstep, with lots of designer and high street boutiques under one roof, as well as restaurants and cafes and an excellent outdoor, covered play area.

Local gems Head down to Fulford Ings, a lovely peaceful green space where you might even spot one of York’s rare Tansy beetles!

Schools St Oswald’s Primary and Fishergate are the local primaries, while Fulford School is the secondary option.

Green spaces There are a few small local play areas, but the big draw for Fulford residents is the river Ouse, a short walk away. Keep an eye out for the Two Hoots ice cream boat that moors by the Millennium Bridge during the warmer months.

What the locals say ‘Like lots of families, we moved to Fulford for the excellent schools, but there are lots of other reasons we love it. It’s close to York, very close to the Designer Outlet for shopping, and because it’s full of young families it’s easy to make friends’.

Why move to

Haxby & Wigginton?

Haxby (and neighboroughing Wigginton) is one of the most popular villages for families locating to York, perhaps because of the wealth of amenities on the doorstep and the charming village vibe.

As well as a handy parade of shops and supermarkets, there are cafes, pubs and a great sense of community. You’re a stone’s throw from the numerous entertainment and shopping opportunities of Monk’s Cross, Vangarde and Clifton Moor, too. Nearby Strensall and New Earswick are also popular with families and worth a look if you’re tempted by village life.

Local gems The Haxby Bakehouse is a legendary destination for lovers of locally sourced carbs. Their artisan breads, pastries and hot cross buns are well worth dropping in for, and many people travel across York to stock up. Imagine having it all within walking distance! Lazy Saturday mornings sorted. The proximity to The Web Adventure Park, with its huge indoor soft play and outdoor adventure play area, is also a real bonus.

Schools There are a few primary school options, including Ralph Butterfield Primary, Wigginton Primary and Headlands Primary. The main secondary school is Joseph Rowntree School.

Green spaces Haxby and Wigginton are surrounded by green space, and there’s no shortage of little play areas. One of the real benefits in terms of outdoor space, though, is the proximity to the beautiful Moorlands Nature Reserve. This Yorkshire Wildlife Trust wood is stunning and ideal for little legs - there’s even a treehouse to find on the short circular walk!

What the locals say ‘Haxby has everything that we need - we love it. We’ve made a lot of friends since we moved here a few years ago, and it’s great to have cafes and children’s classes within the village so we can meet up with people easily. It’s peaceful but there’s a lot going on, and it’s easy to drive to most places too.’

Why move to

Heworth?

Heworth is another very popular location with families, with a good variety of housing from Victorian terraces and villas to plenty of semi-detached options with decent sized gardens.

There are good schools on the doorstep, a handy high street (East Parade) with independent shops and cafes, and for many it’s just a short walk into York. It’s perfectly located for out-oftown shopping at Monk’s Cross and Vangarde, with their cinemas, department stores, large supermarkets and more.

Local gems Bean on the Green is an independent coffee shop on Heworth’s East Parade, popular for its delicious coffee, tasty breakfasts and pizza.

Schools Hempland and Heworth are the main primary schools for Heworth residents, while Archbishop Holgate’s School is the secondary school of choice for most families.

Green spaces As well as a little park on East Parade and the Ashley Park play area, there’s Heworth Ings.

Lots of other green spaces are within easy driving distance.

What the locals say ‘We love Heworth. There are good schools, it’s close to the countryside, there are handy local shops on East Parade and Vangarde is close by too. There’s a lovely sense of community on the streets too. We’re happy here and wouldn’t move’.

Why move to

Holgate?

Holgate is a suburb very near the centre of York, often chosen because of its excellent transport links. It’s a short walk into town, but Holgate also benefits from being close enough to York Knavesmire, the river Ouse and West Bank Park so that fresh air and green spaces aren’t far away. New, independent businesses are popping up all the time, adding to the sense of community in this thriving location.

Local gems The Prickly Pear is a newly opened delicatessen that’s been causing a stir with its freshly baked pastries, locally sourced pies and delicious takeaway coffee. Keep an eye out for wine and cheese nights!

Schools Local primary schools include St Paul’s and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. For secondary, All Saints and Millthorpe are close by. Independent girls’ school, The Mount school, is very close.

We think we have the best park (West Bank), we can see the windmill from our window, we are only a short walk to the racecourse, train station, beloved NRM for my train-mad sons and it’s only a short walk into town. The schools and nurseries are excellent and there’s a real sense of community where we are. We also have the Prickly Pear on our doorstep. We love it!’

Why move to

Osbaldwick?

Just two miles from York city centre, and a stone’s throw from the University of York, Osbaldwick is growing in popularity all the time as a great place for families to live. As well as being very pretty and having all the key village amenities, from shops to pubs, it’s very well connected.

There are easy bus routes into York, an excellent cycle path into the city centre, and the A64 is a very short drive away. The new Derwenthorpe development of eco-friendly housing is very popular and has a lovely sense of community.

Local gems The Kitchen is a new cafe in Osbaldwick that’s charming the residents with delicious cakes, breakfasts and more.

Schools Osbaldwick Primary is the local school for younger children, while older ones tend to go to nearby Archbishop Holgate’s.

Green spaces Osbaldwick is a leafy village with plenty of green spaces, and just a short walk or cycle ride from even more countryside to explore. The campuses of the University of York are lovely for lakeside walks.

Moving house checklist Kids? Check! Cat? Check! Unfortunately, there’s a bit more to remember when it comes to moving house. Use this checklist to make sure that the main things don’t get forgotten.

Contact removal companies for quotes for moving/storage.

Start packing the things you won’t need before the move (label the boxes with the names of the rooms that you want them to go into).

Order packing cases.

Order any new furniture/carpets/curtains in time for the move.

Have a thorough clear-out so you’re not moving any unwanted clutter into your new home, and donate unwanted stuff to charity.

Begin to eat what’s in the fridge/freezer waste not, want not! Now’s the time to sort through and get rid of all those 10-year-old jars of herbs and spices, too.

Double-check any arrangements to look after children/pets while you move.

Notify the utility companies of your move.

Organise mail redirection through the Post Office.

Make arrangements for pet/childcare on moving day, if necessary.

Wonderful Woodland Walks For the ultimate recharging experience, a walk in the woods can’t be beaten: fresh air, oodles of space, interesting things to discover, wildlife to spot and more sticks than you can, well, shake a stick at, it’s a paradise for kids in particular. Adventures in the North York Moors The North York Moors National Park is on York’s doorstep, and it’s one of the most stunning areas of the country. It’s amazing walking country for families with children old enough to enjoy exploring, and there are some lovely family-friendly attractions too. Here are our highlights.

Dalby Forest is stunning and a great budget option (just pay to park): walk, run or cycle your way round, and don’t miss the family walking trails (you might just spot a Gruffalo!). There’s a cafe, bike hire and a weekly parkrun.

Head to the Yorkshire Coast Buckets and spades at the ready! The gorgeous Yorkshire coast has a lot to enjoy, and it’s under an hour from York. Beware the A64 traffic during the summer (set off early), but if you do get stuck in queues, at least you know it will be worth it when you get there.

Here are a few of our favourite seaside destinations: •

Whitby - The pretty seaside town of Whitby is a wonderful place to visit with kids.

Enjoy a boat trip, tuck into fish and chips and climb the steps up to Whitby Abbey - it’s a long way up but well worth the effort for stunning sea views from the ruins of this former monastery.

Scarborough - One of the most popular seaside resorts in the country, we love Scarborough’s charms. The bustling south bay is popular with kids who love arcades and building sandcastles, but we love the rugged, less busy North Bay. Hire a peddalo at Peasholm Park and don’t miss Scarborough Castle (pack a kite!).

Bridlington - Bridlington is another popular option for a coastal day out thanks to its beautiful sandy beaches. We’d recommend Sewerby Hall for families, and you can walk or take the land train down to the beach too. Splash Zone is a brilliant swimming pool with slides, and it’s great vaule too. RSPB Bempton Cliffs is the best place to go birdwatching you might even spot a puffin!

Filey - Filey might be small but it’s big on charm. The beach

is the main draw - in fact it was named Sunday Times Beach of the Year in 2018 - and there are plenty of places to pick up freshly cooked fish and chips and delicious ice cream.
