It’s that time of the year when parents with school-aged children go into panic mode about how to fill the weeks ahead. No fear: we are here for you, with all the best activities and events going on in and around York at the hottest time of the year (in theory). There’s plenty to choose from, whether you fancy a day trip, something that won’t break the budget or a dry option for those (hopefully rare) rainy days. There are some brilliant shows coming up too, from the Great Yorkshire Fringe to Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre and Swallows & Amazons. We're also encouraging everyone to go somewhere you've never been before, and you'll find plenty of inspiration inside. Let us know where you end up!

The Beach at Piglets Adventure Farm

York Maze reopens

Pack an extra set of clothes and your swimwear as Piglets’ famous end-ofthe-day foam parties return for the summer. What's more, there’s new sand and water fun too. Splash your way through 2 acres of sand and water, take a selfie in the giant deck chair, climb Truffles' Lifeguard tower and laze in a hammock. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a delicious ice cream or milkshake at Beach Bites café. You can even hire your own private beach hut! That’s on top of the old Piglets favourites: tractor and trailer rides, fairytale trail, adventure playgrounds, maze, indoor play barn and more.

Europe’s biggest maize maze re-opens its doors in July and promises some new developments to make one of York’s premium attractions even better. It’s only open for six weeks a year, so catch it while you can. There's more than enough to do to make it a full day out, with loads of activities for kids of all ages. Top tips: arrive early and make sure the kids go to the loo before you embark on the maze!

Turtley Awesome Summer at The Deep

Fun at the Museums A trip to the museums is a must while you're in York, and York Castle Museum is one of our absolute favourites. It's not every day that you get to walk down a recreated Victorian street, after all. There'll be special storytimes on selected dates (7thm 14th & 21st August). At the Yorkshire Museum, explore the Jurassic Yorkshire exhibition where you can make your own dinosaurs and recreate your own Jurassic worlds.

York Art Gallery has plenty of handson activities for children too, and a new cafe, Sketch, to try. There's a short but sweet kids' menu and creative choices for adults.

It's all about turtles at brilliant Hull aquarium, The Deep, this summer.

Get hands on in the ‘turtle hospital’ to find out what it takes to look after our flippered friends, take part in the turtle trail and enjoy interactive presentations. There's lots of hands-on activities and you'll come away having learnt loads more about what lurks beneath the waves. While you're there, why not head into Hull and explore what's on offer?

Family activities at York Minster

Join the joust at Scarborough Castle

The craft activities at York Minster are always a hit with children and this year they run on Wednesday 7th, 14th and 21st August; the first session’s free and the others are £2.50 in addition to admission (free for York residents).

There are FREE activities going on in Dean’s Park too, from falconry viewing to crafts and more. Just drop in and get involved. Coming up at York Minster in October is Northern Lights, a light and sound spectacular. Children are welcome so book early to avoid disappointment.

Head to the coast and climb up the hill to Scarborough Castle this summer to watch a tournament of strength, skill and horsemanship during the jousting weekend. Charging at each other at full speed, each knight will attempt to knock their opponent from their horse. The encampment will be alive with the sights, sounds and smells of medieval life: merry music, jester’s jokes, cookery and crafts.

Myths and Legends at Whitby Abbey

Venture to Skelf Island at Castle Howard

Take a trip to the pretty coastal town of Whitby and climb the steps to the Abbey to meet brave heroes and formidable foes from myths and legends. Get hands-on, enrol in sword school and enjoy exciting storytelling.

A day out at Castle Howard with children just got better, and we couldn’t be more excited! From July 2019 there’s a brand new adventure playground called Skelf Island, with treetop nests connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment. For centuries, Skelves have lived in a secret world over the water from Castle Howard, creating mischief and mayhem in the trees.

Now they want to find out more about the visiting humans! Visit Skelf Island to explore their world (included in admission price).

Family activities galore at Fountains Abbey There’s lots going on at Fountains for families this summer, from pom pom making to archery, pond-weeding to pond-dipping and more. Check the website to see what’s going on when you’re planning to visit. Our top tip is to park at Studley Royal and walk up to the abbey from there, so you don't get stuck in the play area as soon as you've arrived. Pack a picnic or enjoy a meal that someone else has made from the restaurant.

No summer holiday in York is complete without a trip to the Railway Museum, and as always there’ll be plenty for children to do. Get involved in hands-on games and puzzles, invent new solutions to age-old problems, explore the locomotives and discover why this is a multi Little Vikings Award-winning York attraction. It’s great on rainy days, too: it’s known as York’s umbrella for a reason! Summer activities run from 20th July to 1st September 2019. Did we mention that admission is free?!

There are lots of activities going on at Beningbrough this August. Get handson with the garden team and become an apprentice on Mondays; head to the Hall on Tuesdays for some bug busting with the conservation team, and get ‘Artrageous!' on Wednesdays and Fridays crafting in the hayloft.

Celebrate all things Yorkshire on 3-4 August and all things bees on 17-18 August. Climb the pyramid tower, pick up an explorer backpack or dress up as lord or lady of the hall. Don’t forget that there are activities inside, so it’s not just a fair-weather destination.

Even if you can, we insist that you give yourself a break for at least a day or two so that you’re all still talking to each other when September rolls around. Wolds Way Lavender What is it? It’s a family-run lavender farm bursting with numerous varieties of lavender and herbs. During the summer months, the air is full of wonderful fragrances.

Where is it? On the edge of the pretty Yorkshire Wolds, Wolds Way Lavender is around half an hour from York and easily accessed from the A64 (summer traffic permitting). Surrounded by woodland, you’re greeted by buzzing bees and chattering birds. Hayfever sufferers, you'll need your antihistamines!

What’s in it for kids? There’s plenty for children to do: our kids loved the giant willow maze where they got stuck into lots of garden games, from giant chess to quoits, Connect 4 to hopscotch and more. There’s a good play area, giant sandpit and kitchen and even footgolf. You can splash out on tickets for the little narrow gauge railway, too, to see the site from the rails.

Good to know There’s a brand new tearoom on site where you can even get stuck into lavender scones! Wolds Way Lavender is just across the road from Scampston Walled Garden, so you could combine visits to both.

Scampston Walled Gardens

What is it? Scampston is a beautiful family-owned regency country house, stunning walled kitchen garden and oodles of parkland. The walled garden is packed with delights and lots of excellent hiding places, as our children discovered, but it’s well worth venturing out into the parkland and following one of the nature trails too. Our walk took us, happily, to a hidden adventure play area which all three of our children (9, 6 and 4) enjoyed.

Where is it? Just outside Malton, Scampston’s easy to reach via the A64 and there’s ample free parking.

What’s in it for kids? Plenty! Families are very much welcome, and it’s clear from the off. We collected a nature trail bag at the ticket office which was great - we had to try to find feathers, leaves and more with which to fill it. Likewise, the sensory bag is a lovely idea: it challenges younger visitors to find something splashy, for example, which was easy for us on a rainy day. We also borrowed an explorer backpack, complete with magnifying glass, torch and other items to make our visit a real adventure. They were all free to borrow and very much appreciated.

Good to know Look out for special children’s activities during the summer holidays. There’s a lovely cafe on site, with a children’s menu, baby changing and the all-important ice cream!

BOUNCING AROUND AT TREE TOP TREK YORKSHIRE If there’s ever a time that the kids are bouncing off the walls, it’s during the long summer holidays. One thing that’s bound to tire them out is a trip to Tree Top Trek, on the Lightwater Valley site in Ripon. Bouncy walkways, trampolines, slides and tunnels have been threaded through the trees to create a fun trail for all but the very young to enjoy. We took our three kids along (9, 6 and 4) and, after a brief safety briefing, set them loose to clamber and jump to their heart’s content. We grown-ups got involved too, rolling around among the exercise balls, joining them on the slides and chasing them about. It feels completely safe and even our youngest, who can be a bit nervous of heights, soon got her confidence. It’s a case of the more the merrier: our three enjoyed a big game of hide-and-seek, and it was good to see other groups of kids enjoying themselves without a screen in sight.

While you’re there - If you can’t resist the lure of the Lightwater Valley rides and you're feeling generous/rich, you could always combine the two for a fun - if pricey - day out.

A CHILDREN’S TOUR OF RIPLEY CASTLE Our children seem to have inherited our love of nosing around other people’s houses, so we shouldn’t have been surprised at how much they enjoyed the children’s tour of Ripley Castle. The castle is steeped in fascinating history and the best way to learn about it is to go beyond the guidebook and embark on a tour with one of the extremely knowledgeable and friendly guides. The children’s tours have been designed especially to hold the attention of younger visitors - expect to hold a cannonball, touch a sword and listen to intriguing tales that give you a real insight into how life was. I’d wondered whether our four-year-old would be too young, but she loved discovering the hidden doors and hidey holes and hearing the stories behind them.

While you’re there - There’s a small children’s play area in the walled gardens, too. You’re not far from Knaresborough or Fountains Abbey if you fancy combining a visit.

Food & drink - We had lunch in the cosy tea room. There’s a children’s menu, vegan options, tempting cakes and a selection of Brymor ice cream.

A GRAND DAY OUT TO RABY CASTLE AND HIGH FORCE WATERFALL

With longer days and warmer weather (fingers crossed), the summer holidays are the ideal time to plan a full day trip, especially as you don’t have to be up for the school run the next day. Here’s a great one to try, with a castle, waterfall and proper Sunday lunch to enjoy.

Destination: County Durham. Here’s what we made of Raby Castle and High Force.

About High Force

Raby is what our children call ‘a proper castle’: it’s all in one piece (a rare thing indeed!) with a moat, portcullis and plenty of castley bits (crenellations and arrow slits). It’s a place with lots of exciting history, too, which is brought to life through activities and funny stories on their dedicated children’s tour. Mike the 'footman' told us tales of dead cats in the moat, rats in the kitchen, knights in shining armour and maids in the scullery. There are photo opportunities galore and the tone is ideal to engage younger children.

Just a 25-minute drive from Raby Castle are the raging waters of the High Force waterfall, where the river Tees plunges into a deep pool with incredible - well - force. It’s a short walk down to the falls through pretty woodland that’s mostly accessible by buggy. There’s a small charge to access the falls (£1 per adult, 50p for children), but we think it’s well worth it for such a stunning sight.

Food & drink There’s a lovely cafe at Raby Castle that serves good cake, cracking hot chocolate and good homemade lunches (veggie and vegan options available). But we visited on a Sunday, which was the perfect excuse to enjoy a proper Sunday lunch at the High Force Hotel (Alston Rd, Middletonin-Teesdale, Forest-in-Teesdale DL12 0XH), an old coaching inn with a menu, food and service that’s very much 21st century. It’s a lovely, relaxed place to enjoy a family meal, with friendly and accommodating staff and great home-cooked food. The roast dinner went down very well with the meat-eaters and the fragrant vegan Thai curry with rice and flatbread got a thumbs-up too. There’s a short but sweet children’s menu, including a children’s sized roast dinner, and the sticky toffee pudding is a must.

All three of the kids loved exploring the gardens, playing garden games, making up stories and - as always - playing non-stop games of hideand-seek. You can also hire bikes to explore the pretty parkland where we saw crowds of deer and longhorn cows. The outdoor play area is well worth seeking out, too, with a good range of equipment for older and younger children (including the everpopular zipwire!). There are special activities during the school holidays, and outdoor theatre events too.

The verdict There’s an awful lot to enjoy about a trip to Raby Castle and High Force, from the raging waterfall to exploring the grounds and castle. Go to the pub and you’ll eat well, too! We thought it might be a long way for a day trip but it was an easy drive of just over an hour to get there and we had a packed day out, getting home just in time for tea. It was our first visit but it won’t be our last.

Eating out with kids, a date night review and a lovely picnic recipe

Little Vikings eat at….Vaqueiros If you aren’t jetting off to exotic climes this summer, never fear: you can get a taste of South America at Vaqueiros, the Braziliant rodizio on Micklegate. We went along to try it for ourselves.

Just a stone’s throw from Ouse Bridge, Vaqueiros is large, inviting restaurant that wears its Brazilian theme proudly. Saddles adorn the walls, Brazilian flags are strung across the room and there’s a smattering of Portuguese on the signs and menus. The welcome was typically Brazilian too: incredibly warm and welcoming. Drinks ordered, our waiter talked us through how dining works at Vaqueiros: help yourselves to whatever you like from the groaning salad and hot food bar, order any vegetarian/pescetarian meals and - for carnivores - settle down and wait for the Passadores (meat-wielders) to come and offer you a slice (or several) of whatever is on their sword. Everyone has a paper disk, red on one side and green on the other, to indicate whether you would like to be offered any more meat or if you’re feeling defeated.

If all this sounds meatheavy, it is. Having visited Brazil a couple of times, I was familiar with this full-on meat fest that’s so beloved of the Brazilians. Thankfully, with three vegetarians in the family, I also knew that vegetables also feature Issue 31

heavily so I hoped that we wouldn’t go hungry. Far from it, as it turns out: as well as having plenty of choice from the salad bar, we enjoyed incredibly hearty mains from the short but sweet veggie options.

There’s no need for a children’s menu: our kids just had less of what we had.

Our young carnivore tucked into meat galore until he could eat no more (the sausages and rump were his favourite), while the two vegetarians filled themselves up at the salad bar and found themselves struggling to eat the generous mushroom pasta dish they’d ordered.

There’s something about being able to serve themselves that kids love, and Vaqueiros does that brilliantly. There’s no boring waiting about for food to be delivered, and the novelty of someone carving meat at the table adds to the fun of the experience. The fact that you can wash the tasty food down with a Brazilian beer or two adds to the holiday vibes, whether it’s sunny outside or not.

Pairings This summer, you can take a flight with your loved one without stepping foot on a plane. This isn’t the type of flight that will take you to exotic climes: we’re talking about the exclusive wine tasting experience at Pairings, the family-run wine bar just an olive stone’s throw from Clifford’s Tower.

Although the destination might not be tropical, the journey is much more enjoyable and Pairings is a lovely place to spend the evening. The bar itself is stylish but relaxed, with a clever mix of bar seating, intimate tables and, at the back, a sumptuous new booth area that was our home for the night. It feels welcoming and open to all: no wine snobbery here, I’m pleased to report (especially I’m guilty of choosing wine based on the price and how much I like the label). Our trip into the world of wine (and cheese) took us on a Pairings Flight, with wine and food expertly matched and explained. During the booking process, we’d given details of the wine we generally enjoy (erm, all of it) and any dietary requirements.

When we arrived, James - the impressively knowledgeable and friendly sommelier - chatted to us about what we’d like to try during the evening. As unfussy types, we let him use his imagination. As we’re always telling the kids when we’re attempting to get them to eat something new (again), it pays to be open-minded.

We tried three stunning white wines, each very different and all enhanced by being accompanied by something delicious to eat, carefully chosen to bring out the best in the drink. We tried wines that we wouldn’t normally have considered - we’re definitely guilty of choosing the same bottle from the menu Issue 31

every time - but really enjoyed them all. Finding out more about their origin was really enlightening and brought them to life: we came away with visions of grapes growing in the moonlight before finally ending up in our glasses. Big juicy olives, slices of creamy French cheese and a sweet and salty millionaire’s shortbread transported us to other countries too.

If you aren't going abroad this summer (and even if you are), a wine flight is just the ticket for an evening away from the real world.

Little Vikings make...a lovely veggie frittata A cross between a frittata and a pastry-less quiche, this is simple but tastes incredible and is a hit with children and adults alike. It’s packed with veg and is really easy to make.

Eat warm for lunch or leave to cool and pack in your picnic basket as a nice change from yet another sandwich.

Method

Ingredients

1. Preheat the oven to 180C

2. Butter and line an ovenproof dish or cake tin - we use a 23cm springform tin, lined with greaseproof paper.

3. Grab a large bowl and mix all the ingredients together until combined.

Add a pinch of salt.

2 courgettes, grated Quarter of an onion (more if you like) 5 eggs, beaten 115ml flavourless oil (e.g. sunflower) 140g self-raising flour 75g cheese

4. Pour into your dish/tin and bake until golden and slightly springy on top around 45-50 minutes..

5. Serve straightaway or leave to cool and eat later if you can resist.

Little Vikings Make...

A FAIRY HOUSE NIGHT LIGHT Here's a magical craft activity to keep you busy this summer

1. Take your toilet roll and paint it white, inside and outside, then wait for it to dry.

2. Take your shiny/glittery card and cut out a circle bigger than the top of your toilet roll. Cut a slit into the centre of the circle and using the glue to fix it into a cone shape to make your house’s roof.

3. With the remainder of your card, cut out a door shape in keeping with the size of your house. Stick one of your jewels on as a door handle.

You will need: • A toilet roll • A battery operated tea light • Some very thin coloured paper (cellophane, tissue paper or my favourite Quality Street wrappers!)

• White paint • Scissors • Felt tip pens • Some shiny or glittery card • Stick on jewels.

• A glue stick • A roll of sellotape

4. Once the toilet roll has dried, cut some different shaped windows out of your tube.

5. Take your felt pens and start decorating your fairy house with flowers, butterflies, insects, patterns etc.

6. Taking your thin coloured paper, cover your window holes on the inside of the tube and secure it using sellotape 7. Now just simply glue on your front door and roof and then place your tea-light under the bottom of your house.

New Adventure Playground A day out with the kids at Castle Howard just became even more adventurous and intriguing. Now they can join a cheeky gang of Skelves on a journey into the treetops of Yorkshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest adventure playground, Skelf Island.
