Victorian Christmas at York Castle Museum A Little Vikings Award-winning Christmas experience, there are lots of reasons to take your family to the Castle Museum. As well as discovering how the Victorians celebrated the festive season and getting involved in some crafting activities, there’s a lovely Father Christmas experience.

New for this year, enjoy some extra sparkle with a twilight visit to meet Santa (4.30pm to 7.30pm, pre-booking required). Christmas activities run from 17th November to 24th December 2018; visit the website for the Father Christmas dates.

Meet Father Christmas at Beningbrough Hall Join a small group to meet Father Christmas in Beningbrough Hall’s library. Twelve Days of Christmas at Castle Howard

As part of this year’s 12 Days of Christmas at Castle Howard, there are a few ways to meet Father Christmas.

Predictably, the ever-popular Audience With Father Christmas has sold out but fear not! You can still book for an Enchanted Evening With Father Christmas (24th November to 23rd December 2018) with a tea party, magic, music, stories and more.

For a low-key but lovely experience, head to the drop-in grotto that will be available to book on the day.

Enjoy a magical Twelve Days of Christmas Walk through the Captains Wood, make the turtle doves fly and be one of the drummers drumming.

Visit Santa in the North Pole if you like (extra charge) and meet the elves helping in the workshop. You can even join the elves making craft activities (small charge may apply) or listen to stories. Entry includes admission to the house and Wildlife World too when open. 23rd November to 23rd December 2018. An Edwardian Christmas at Treasurer’s House

Christmas through the ages at Nunnington Hall

Step back in time at Treasurer’s House, where it’s all decked out for an Edwardian-inspired Christmas. Gawp at the tree in the Great Hall and the presents in the fireplace (we hope Santa will still get down the chimney…). Children can search for the naughty gnomes and even make their own Christmas decorations. There’s a grotto experience in the attic, too, where on certain dates you can meet Santa and listen to stories.

Journey back in time to see how Christmas celebrations and decorations have evolved over the centuries at Nunnington.

Sculpture Trail at Fountains Abbey This Christmas, why not visit Fountains Abbey to enjoy the new wooden sculpture trail? York’s Festive First Night York’s Christmas officially begins on Thursday 15th November with the Christmas lights switch-on in St Helen’s Square. It marks the start of the York Christmas Festival, with St Nicholas Fair, Thor’s Tipi and the Yorkshire Yuletide Village (Shambles Market) all open. Take advantage of late night shopping to tick the final (or first) presents off your list and don’t forget to check out the gates to the city as they sparkle through the dark nights.

The Grand Old Dame of York (York Theatre Royal)

Cinderella (Grand Opera House) Stars of stage and screen bring a much-loved fairytale to life with Cinderella at the Grand Opera House. The cast includes Liberty X’s Michelle Heaton, Channel 5 children’s presented Amy Thompson and Corrie’s Ken Morley. Expect glitter galore! From 14th December 2018 to 5th January 2019.

This popular annual carol concert takes place at York Barbican and is guaranteed to raise the festive roof.

A Grand Day Out at SEA LIFE Scarborough What we did

You might think of the Yorkshire coast as a summer destination, but we love it so much that we visit all year round.

We threw our big coats in the car and headed off down a rather quiet A64 for a day in sunny Scarborough, including our first visit to the SEA LIFE Scarborough, a trip on the North Bay Railway and a stroll around Peasholm Park in the sun (yes, the sun does shine on Yorkshire in winter!).

SEA LIFE is divided up into several zones showcasing all manner of sea creatures, from penguins to jellyfish, seahorses to sick seals, sharks and sea dragons. From the first tank of rays to the turtles at the end of our visit, our whole family was mesmerised. It can be hard to find activities that engage the adults and all of our three children equally, but we’d give SEA LIFE a rare tick in that box. We marvelled at the octopus, got hands-on in the rockpool zone and learnt lots about marine life in the process. We picked up a Dive Log Book for each child (free) and followed the trail to collect stamps, another great way to engage children in their visit and give them a few more fish facts in the process. Our hearts went out to the seals recovering in the Seal Hospital (SEA LIFE Scarborough rescues sick seals and nurses them back to health) and it was great fun watching the penguins being fed.

Getting there You’ll find Sea Life in the lovely North Bay area of Scarborough, just around the corner from the glitzier delights of the South Bay. We parked in the council-run car park just outside SEA LIFE. The fact that it has scenic views of the sea slightly took the edge off the relatively steep charges, but you can find free on-street parking within a short walk. Remember to allow time to get on the North Bay Railway if you fancy catching the train down to Peasholm Park like we did.

Little ones who are too small to wield a golf club will enjoy the small outdoor play area.

Book your tickets online before you visit to save up to 50%. There’s also a free round of mini-golf with every online ticket. The attraction is accessible but can get crowded in busy periods - leave your buggy in the car or buggy park if you can. If you’ve got a fish fan in the family, you might like to know that they do birthday parties from £10 per person. It’s not far from Sea Life to Peasholm Park, Alpamare water park and Scarborough Castle, all of which are great fun.We caught the North Bay Railway to Peasholm Park, had a trip around the lake on a dragon pedalo and then headed back on the train to collect the car. It was a lovely day out on the Yorkshire coast and proof that it’s a brilliant place to visit all year round.

Food and drink The Adventurer’s Grill serves a selection of hot and cold snacks, including sandwiches and paninis.

There are kids’ picnic boxes too, which are reasonably priced and include the usual array of sandwiches, snacks and a drink (our children did feel guilty drinking from a plastic straw after hearing about all the plastic in the oceans though - seems they were definitely paying attention to the plastic-free message). If you’d rather take your own food, there are some outdoor picnic benches part way around. Little Vikings eat out... at Daughter Cafe

After almost a decade of parenting, there are only a few months left before all three of my children will be (mostly) happily taken care of at school.

I’ll admit that the prospect of lots of free time from Monday to Friday is quite exciting - even if I know it’ll be filled with work and admin - but I’ll be really sad to wave my littlest off into the classroom. So this year we’re making the most of our weekdays together, doing fun things (plus the occasional trip to the post office and supermarket).

High on our list of things we love to do is going out for something to eat and drink, and it seemed fitting to take my youngest daughter to Daughter, a gorgeous new cafe on Clifford Street.

The building is almost unrecognisable from its previous incarnations: bright, airy and really welcoming. White tiles reflect the light, mini cacti in jolly pots bring pops of colour to the monochrome theme and there’s a huge blackboard where you’ll discover what temptations are on offer today. The menu is firmly Millennial-pleasing, with avocado, halloumi and feta all making an appearance alongside cross-generational favourites like bacon sarnies and toasted teacakes. Food, including the delicious cakes and sweet treats, is all produced on site from the little kitchen and ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible - you’ll find Haxby Baker sourdough, Roost coffee and M&K meat.

There’s no dedicated children’s menu, so not a chicken goujon in sight, but kids can enjoy half portions for a very reasonable £3.50.

My four-year-old chose the French toast with yoghurt and berry compote, with a side of halloumi (as you do).

She was delighted when it arrived and turned out to be a warm, sweet, pudding-like dish of delight rather than a slice of French bread, which is apparently what she was expecting. Over the course of half an hour, she worked through the lot, stopping only to make me try her new favourite food combination: halloumi with berries. I also managed to sneak a corner of her French toast and it was really good - indulgent and delicious, just as it should be. I had scrambled eggs: tasty, well seasoned Issue 28

and all the better for being piled onto a slab of toast with just the right amount of char at the edges. I’m delighted to report, too, that the coffee is really good. Rich, strong and just, well, proper. Although Daughter welcomes everyone -we were surrounded by students, visiting couples and lone coffee drinkers - it’s a very easy place for families.

Run by a family with a young family, they know the drill: toys, books and highchairs are all available but in a stylish and understated way. It’s the kind of place you can go with your kids and all enjoy yourselves and have something lovely to eat and drink too. My daughter and I had a great experience and I’ve no doubt we’ll be back before she packs her bookbag and leaves home. We’ve still got the cakes to try, after all.

Food: Little Vikings bake… mince pie muffins for Santa

Give Father Christmas a break from traditional mince pies by leaving out one of our lovely mince pie muffins instead.

Fingers crossed there are some left over for Christmas breakfast! Makes around 12 cupcake sized muffins Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180 fan/gas 6 2. Melt the butter in a small pan 3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, butter and sugar 4. With a large spoon, fold in the flour, baking powder, mincemeat and banana 5. Stir until just mixed (don’t overdo it) 6. Spoon the mixture evenly into cases (we put the cases in a Yorkshire pud tray to keep them in one place) 7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and springy to touch

Little Vikings Make... a Christmas Tree Photo Decoration 1. Using the superglue, stick the 3 lollipop sticks together to form a triangle.

2. Wait for the glue to dry, then paint the triangle green to create a Christmas tree frame.

3. Whilst the paint is drying, draw a large star and a rectangle on your cardboard and cut them out. If you haven’t used coloured card, colour your shapes in using felt pens.

4. Once your paint is dry, using your superglue again stick your sparkly decorations around your tree frame. Super glue your large star to the top of your frame and your cardboard rectangle to the bottom of the frame so that it looks like a plant pot.

Using either your super glue or some sellotape, stick the string via the knot onto the top corner of your frame on the undecorated side.

7. You can personalise your decoration by writing a date or a special message on the plant pot. Now you are ready for your picture perfect Christmas: this is a decoration yule love hanging on your tree year after year.

You will need: • Some sparkly decorations (pom poms, beads, glitter, sequins, etc) • A photo or picture • An adult to help you with the sticky stuff.

• 3 lolly pop sticks • Super glue • Green poster paint • A length of string • Cardboard • Scissors

5. Choose the photo or picture you would like to use and cut it to size. Once all your decorations have dried onto your frame, turn the frame over and glue your photo to the undecorated side.

6. Finally create a loop with your length of string and secure it with a large knot.
