The daffodils are out and we’re feeling full of the joys of spring. Easter is around the corner, which means lovely family days out and, of course, eggs! Take a look at our pick of the best Easter egg hunts in and around York - there are lots to choose from.

If you do one thing this Easter, make sure you come and visit us at the York Easter Festival in Parliament Street during the bank holiday weekend (Thursday to Monday). As well as seeing a very special Easter show, you can pick up a leaflet and embark on a family Easter hunt around the city. It’s all free and should be great fun. Huge thanks to the York BID and Visit York for working with us to make this happen.

York Easter Family Festival is back!

Roll up, roll up! The York Easter Family Festival is back, making York city centre the place to be for families throughout the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Head to Parliament Street from Thursday 29th March to Monday 2nd April where you’ll find the Little Vikings tent playing host to a brand new Easter show for children. We’re welcoming all families to join us in The Hunt for the Magical Chocolatey Chick, an interactive performance that will take audience members on a virtual hunt around York. With the generous support of the York BID and Visit York, it’s free for everyone and we’d love you to join us.

The show will run five times a day, at 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

While you’re there, why not pick up a trail map and head off on the Great York Bunny Search?

Search for posters in shop windows as part of a competition to win a family holiday for four to Disneyland Europe. Entries can be dropped into the Visit York Information Centre at 1 Museum Street, where there’ll be a chocolatey treat while stocks last!

The York Chocolate Festival will also run throughout the weekend, and there’ll be fairground rides in St Sampson’s Square, too.

Little Vikings escape to Scarborough Waterpark fun

We love the Yorkshire coast, but our day trips are never long enough: we always run out of time or energy before we’ve done all we want to.

So we ignored the freezing weather forecast and booked a night in Scarborough so we could enjoy a more leisurely seaside jaunt.

Faced with dark clouds and rainstorms, there was one thing for it: our first trip to Alpamare Waterpark.

We spent over four hours there: the 8 year old had his first foray into waterslides (you need to be 6+ to slide) while the 5 and 3 year olds loved splashing about in the main pool.

It’s warm with plenty of shallow end and a wave machine. There’s also a good waterplay area. We loved the outdoor pool and were impressed by the changing areas and showers. It’s a really fun place and we’ll definitely be back.

Getting there You could save seaside trips for the summer when the sun’s more likely to shine, but you’ll probably have to grit your teeth and bear the busy A64. We’d rather wrap up warm and head over in the cooler months, when the traffic is light and there are fewer crowds. We were breathing in the sea air in around an hour.

Obligatory ice creams followed, along with a trip to the arcades. While the kids love South Bay, we grown-ups have a soft spot for the unspoiled rugged charm of North Bay, with its wild waves and beautiful views.

Where we stayed Zero points for originality: we stayed at the Premier Inn in Scarborough, which was spacious, comfortable and just a 5 minute walk (or two minute funicular ride) from the beach. Our children have been lucky enough to eat in some special places, but for them, nothing beats a Premier Inn breakfast.

Something for next time Yet again, Scarborough had too much to offer for us to fit it into our time there. We’d planned a trip to the amazing castle and larks in Peasholm Park, but we ran out of time again.

Ah well, it’s a great excuse to plan our next trip. Scarborough, we’ll be back.

Puddle Ducks Puddle Ducks is one of the UK’s leading providers of swimming lessons to babies, toddlers and pre-school children. Aquanatal sessions are available too. Little Vikings Eat at...Carluccio’s Does the newest Italian on the block offer family-friendly eating? Over the last couple of years, York’s St Helen’s Square has undergone a quiet transformation. The Mansion House has been restored to its former glory and some rather glitzy restaurants have arrived to add some extra sparkle to the local eating scene. We took our children along to Carluccio’s for a taste of Italy.

restaurants in the Carluccio’s chain, you’ll be familiar with the format: lots of fresh pasta offerings, daily specials, a reasonable daily set menu, all in a relaxed environment with an Italian twist. What’s different about the new flagship York restaurant, however, is the building. Housed in the old Terrys Chocolate Orange shop, it’s beautiful, with enough brass and dark wood to make the large spaces feel intimate.

choices: cod with lentils was delicious, but not cheap at over £15, and the signature pasta and bean soup was creamy and satisfying. The veggie highlight was a mushroom and kale crostini with garlic and chilli that we’ll replicate it at home - but we’ll be doubling the quantities as I could have happily eaten it twice without a hint of remorse. Service was friendly, fast and family-focused: we were offered smaller cutlery and plastic glasses for our drinks - little touches that reduce the hassle/risk factor of eating out with children. But as when eating out in Italy, the little diners are as welcome as the big ones. Fantastico!

Food-wise, we opted for children’s menu - £6.95 for breadsticks (that never materialised), a main course, drink and pudding. Two of them had the macaroni cheese and ploughed into it with gusto: the 8 year old finished his in about five minutes’ flat, then finished his sister’s leftovers. Our other girl enjoyed the kids’ chicken milanese with roast potatoes and broccoli, and they were all delighted with their ice cream. Meanwhile, we were happy with our grown-up

Date night dinner at Bistro Guy Japanese style – was beautiful, accompanied by Yuzu-dressed fine beans and a wasabi emulsion. King scallop and black pudding was given an original twist with miso, dried mango and lemon foam.

The highlight, though, was Guy’s whisky-smoked duck. It arrived as a piece of theatre: a smokefilled bell-jar, lifted to reveal the exquisitely-tender duck. Crispy sweet potato, warm ginger and orange sauce and tangy pomegranate seeds complemented its smokiness wonderfully. It’s hard to think of other places in York that offer this type of experience. For dessert, we demolished a chocolate brownie, coconut panacotta and red bean ice cream and an Irish Cream iced parfait with warm caramel.

We’re no strangers to Bistro Guy’s daytime menu – it’s a great place for lunch with children, thanks to the little garden and thoughtful kids’ menu. But the evening menu has always looked intriguing, so in the interests of research, we booked in for a date night.

Chef Guy Whapples has created a tempting menu of European-Japanese small plates that presents a problem for the indecisive. But fear not: little dishes mean you can unashamedly order an assortment to share (if sharing is your thing).

Date night means a drink or two, and we were happy with Bistro Guy’s bar offering: the house white was spoton, as was the selection of real ales.

Little Vikings make... carrot cupcakes

We’re pretty sure that these cupcakes are a favourite of the Easter bunny. Our kids polished these off in no time, and the fact that they’re veg-packed is a bonus.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees/gas mark 6.

2. Line a cupcake/Yorkshire pudding tray with 12 paper cupcake cases.

3. Beat the sugar, oil and eggs together by hand or in an electric mixer.

Ingredients (makes 12 little cupcakes)

4. When it’s mixed, slowly fold in the flour, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder. Grate in the peel of half of the orange/satsuma if you would like a fruity flavour.

5. Mix in the carrots and make sure the batter is well blended.

6. Divide the mixture between the cases and bake for 15 - 20 minutes, then cool on a rack.

7. To make the icing, just beat the ingredients together. If you don’t like this type of icing, you can use any other type and decorate the cakes as you like. Pop a chocolate egg on top of each cake for an Eastery look. Enjoy!

Little Vikings make….an Easter Bunny marionette Why not make a few of these hoppy bunnies and create your own Easter puppet show?

1. Colour in your toilet roll, then with your hole punch, make 5 holes in your roll: two at the bottom for the legs, 2 on the sides for the arms and one at the top on the back.

made in the back of the body and again attach the top to one of the remaining free arms of the controller. Take the final piece of cotton and pierce a small hole at the top of the bunny’s head thread it through and tie it in, then tie the top to the last free arm of the controller.

2. On the coloured cardboard, draw a large bunny’s head, cut it out, stick the googly eyes to it, then stick the head on your toilet roll body

7. To finish, glue the pom pom on to the bunny’s bottom as a fluffy cotton tail.

You’re done! You’ll be hopping with joy at how awesome your marionette is.

3. Take the pipe cleaner and thread it through the two arm holes. Curl each side of the pipe cleaner around your finger to create a spiral to keep the arms in place.

You will need An empty toilet roll tube Some coloured cardboard A hole punch A pair of scissors Two buttons A ball of string A reel of cotton Two lollipop sticks Two googly eyes A pom pom Glue Felt pens A pipecleaner

4. Cut two lengths of string from your ball.

Thread a button onto the bottom of each length then tie the top to each of the leg holes 5. Take your two lollipop sticks and place one on top of the other in a cross shape.

Cut some more string and use it to secure your sticks in place.

6. Cut four lengths of cotton, tie one onto each leg at the bottom just above the button foot and then tie the other end to opposite arms of your lollipop stick controller. Tie another to the hole you
