Owls at Beningbrough Hall

Nature at Nunnington Hall

Wise owls will head to Beningbrough Hall for lots of bird-related fun. Grab an owl mask and follow the owl art trail. On Sunday 11th and Wednesday 14th, join Stories Alive! for a new themed Beningbrough story. On Tuesday and Thursday, make an origami owl, and on Friday join a walk to discover more about owls and their habitats.

Join in with fun activities as Nunnington gets ready for spring.

The season is fast approaching and there’s plenty to prepare to give garden wildlife a helping hand. Get crafty with fat feeder and bird box making ready for the garden, before wrapping up warm to head outside for the ‘feathery friends’ garden trail.

THE JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL: BEST BITS FOR KIDS

Puzzling Penguins at The Deep

Winner of Best Festival in the Little Vikings Awards once more, it’s no surprise that this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival has a programme packed with great activities for children. The Festival takes place from 12th to 18th February and there’ll be events across the city. Many are free, all are fun.

This year’s festival explores the invasion of the Great Viking Army by the three brothers, sons of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok, in AD 866 and the dawn of Viking York! Here are a few of our highlights. Find more on our website, and be sure to pre-book where required.

There’s penguin fun at The Deep in Hull: follow the penguin trail, make your own penguin ID bracelet like The Deep’s penguins wear and discover what the special bracelet codes mean. There’ll also be talks, dive shows, touch pool sessions, daily feeds and more.

Tim Peake’s spacecraft lands at the National Railway Museum Calling all space cadets! Tim Peake’s spacecraft, Soyuz TMA-19M is landing at the National Railway Museum on 17th January and you can see it for yourself up to 8th March 2018. The capsule, along with its equipped interior and char marks on its outer body from re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere, will be displayed with its 25m parachute.

Station (daily), and there’ll also be Spacecraft Talks at 11am and 3.30pm daily, where you can find out more about the capsule and its incredible journey.

It’s worth staying in York for February half term, too, with half term adventures galore at the National Railway Museum. There’ll be handson space-age engineering activities all week long from (10th to 18th February 2018), including the chance to have a go at astronaut training. It’s going to be out of this world…

There’ll also be a range of inspiring space activities, including the Space Descent VR experience, narrated by Tim Peake himself (suitable for ages 13+). It uses headsets to recreate the experience of traveling over the International Space Station and the 250 mile journey back down to earth.

Search for the Early Man tribe at Scarborough Castle! Join a quest that will go down in history There’s a real half term treat coming up at Scarborough Castle this February half term. English Heritage has teamed up with award-winning animation studio Aardman - of Wallace & Gromit fame - to celebrate the release of Oscar-winning Nick Park’s new film, EARLY MAN, released in January.

prehistoric creatures and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, Early Man tells the story of how plucky caveman Dug (Eddie Redmayne), along with sidekick Hognob unites his tribe against the mighty Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and the Bronze Age to save their home. Visitors can also enter a special competition to win tickets to a VIP screening of the film at Stonehenge. The trail takes place from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th February 2018, and there’s an additional £1 charge per trail.

Young visitors to Scarborough Castle can take part in a special trail, following clues in search of the Early Man tribe and discovering centuries of history in one day. Participants will also receive an Aardman modelmaking kit!

A weekend getaway at

North Star Club When we told our friends that we were heading off into the Yorkshire countryside for a winter weekend break in a luxury woodland lodge, we were met with a lot of envious looks.

Until, that is, we mentioned that we were taking our three children - seven, five and three - with us, and that there’s no wifi. Undeterred, we packed our warmest clothes and programmed the Satnav. Destination: family fun.

Location Just 35 minutes from York, North Star Club is on the doorstep of William’s Den, Yorkshire’s newest family attraction. Hull is a short drive, where The Deep is just one of many family destinations.

The lodge

Overview

We stayed in Amy Johnson, a glamorous suite inspired by the heroic pilot. Everything about it oozes woodland luxury: faux fur throws, leather furniture, mirrored dressing table and candles dotted everywhere.

The bathroom is epic: the enormous bathtub takes pride of place and there’s a massive walk-in shower too.

There’s a little living room, but we spent most of the weekend hanging out in our big bedroom, enjoying the warmth of the woodburner (younger children might need a lesson in fire

Nestled in the Yorkshire Wolds, North Star Club is a family-run woodland escape with a difference. Forget visions of dome-covered swimming pools and endless identikit lodges: with just 8 individually designed woodland suites, this is a unique place with a stylish, relaxed and secluded feel. Aside from the reception and the Woodshed communal chill-out area, there’s no play area, pool or spa. In fact there’s nothing except your lovely lodge, some communal fire pits and Issue 23

safety before they’re let loose). Our kids were delighted to cosy up in the smaller bedroom: the bunkbed and a travel cot - provided - gave them a good night’s sleep. There’s a large veranda with barbecue that’s a brilliant space for al fresco feasting.

Service Everything about North Star Club is understated, including the service.

We barely saw another human, staff or otherwise. The welcome was warm and informative, then we were left to our own devices. It’s a refreshingly hands-off approach for families that don’t need their hands holding.

This is a low-tech adventure, and we embraced the fact that there’s no TV or wifi as the perfect chance for some family bonding time. We danced (pack a speaker), played games, read books and went nature-spotting.

The verdict

Food & drink

Our stay at North Star Club was magical, and we left feeling revived and re-energised. We can see why it’s popular for adult get-togethers and grown-up celebrations, but it’s a lovely place for a family break away from everyday distractions too. It’s paredback, off-grid, understated indulgence which, for us, meant love at first sight.

North Star Club doesn’t claim to be self-catering, but there is a small fridge, kettle (vital for tired parents!), sink, crockery and cutlery. In the absence of an oven, it’s over to the communal pizza oven or barbecue if you’re after something hot. We loved cooking our own pizzas in the oven and eating them in the fabulously cosy Woodshed communal area.

LITTLE VIKINGS EAT...at Five Guys As a self-confessed burger enthusiast, it was no surprise to that Mr Viking chose the newest burger joint in town, Five Guys, as the destination for his birthday lunch. The American chain landed in High Petergate a few weeks ago with the mission to serve the perfect burgers and fries to the people of York. It’s a simple, successful formula that’s seen the restaurant cross the Atlantic, but would it get the birthday boy’s seal of approval?

True to its American roots, there’s more than a touch of diner about the decor. Red, white and shiny, it’s a place with ‘fast food’ written all over it. Friendly staff take your order in front of the open kitchen, patiently explaining how it works to Five Guys novices. Forget meals deals and Disney toys in colourful boxes: you’ve got burgers, you’ve got dogs, you’ve got shakes. And that’s about it.

Sounds simple? It is, but you need to decide which burger, what size, and which of the numerous (free) toppings you’d like to add. There’s a Coca Cola machine where you can get a bespoke Coke, and food is served foil-wrapped in paper bags. Get your food to go or Issue 23

Perhaps unsurprisingly, vegetarians aren’t brilliantly catered for: my veggie sandwich was essentially a heap of veggies in a bun - tasty, but slightly unsatisfying. Our eldest girl - not a burger fan - opted for the grilled cheese sandwich but swiftly rejected it, claiming that she didn’t like the cheese. She was, however, happy to swap her couple of slices of bland burger cheese and grilled bread for lots and lots of fries. In fact a fight nearly broke out over the fries: they’re good enough to fight your siblings for.

Little Vikings Make...

Chocolate strawberry Valentine’s hearts If chocolates and strawberries aren’t the way to your Valentine’s heart, we don’t know what is. This sweet recipe is easy peasy and looks good too.

10. Decorate your strawberries with icing, sprinkles or anything else, then give one to someone special (and have one yourself you deserve it!).

Method 1. Cut each strawberry in half lengthways, then place the two halves next to each other, cut side up.

2. Push the cocktail stick through the middle of both halves so that they are joined together. You should be able to see that it makes a rough heart shape.

Ingredients 1 punnet of strawberries 1 big bar of chocolate of your choice

3. Repeat for each of the strawberries.

4. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper/silicone.

Coloured icing/sprinkles to decorate

5. Break up the chocolate and melt it. You can do this in your microwave (follow its instructions) or in a bowl over simmering water - be careful!

You will also need some cocktail sticks

6. Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, carefully dip each of the strawberries into your chocolate of choice and coat them completely.

7. Put the coated strawberry, cut side down, on the baking tray.

8. Repeat until all the strawberries are coated.

9. Put the tray of strawberries in the fridge for 15 minutes, then remove and take out the cocktail sticks.

Little Vikings make…. secret message love birds Tell someone that you love them this Valentine’s Day by making one of these beautiful birds

1. Cut the paper plate into the shape of a bird from the side (without the beak)
