York Maze is always a great family day out, with rides, attractions and shows for kids of all ages. We always have a brilliant time there so it’s on our summer holiday to-do list every year.

Little Diggers are fun Saturday morning sessions at DIG: An Archaeological Adventure for 2 to 5 year olds that run at various times throughout the year.

Spend a day in the life of a WW1 soldier to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Meet a First World War soldier and help him build a section of trench wall, make a periscope to peep over the trench wall or follow the trail through the 1914 Gallery (50p).

On Fridays 27th July, 5th August, 12th August, 19th August & 26th August, hear the story of WW1 soldier Arthur Radclyffe Dugmor brought to life. While you’re there, don’t miss Kirkgate, the recreated Victorian street (the sweet shop is always a hit).

Where in York do you think could inspire so much nagging from a 6 year old boy? Well it might surprise you to hear that we’d just visited Fairfax House, England’s finest Georgian house. I’d wondered if he was old enough to enjoy it (and more importantly, not break any priceless objects) but needn’t have been concerned. Fans of a good mystery, we embarked on the children’s Gregory the Townhouse Mouse trail to try to work out which mouse had stolen some precious jewels. As well as solving the puzzles, we loved learning from the friendly and very knowledgeable staff about how the Georgians lived. They really brought the house to life for us (and helped us with the clues!).

Mystery solved, we were rewarded with a little treat for our sleuthing - a sweet end to a lovely visit to one of the jewels in York’s crown.

ANIMAL ANTICS AT CASTLE HOWARD Animal antics are the order of the day at Castle Howard this summer: head off on an expedition with the Rusticus characters and meet the hibernating dormouse, butterfly catcher or woodland fairy. ANGELINA BALLERINA AND A DRAGON AT NUNNINGTON HALL From 23rd July, explore the magical world of Mouse-Land at the Angelina Ballerina illustrations exhibition. On Sunday 28th and Saturday 29th August, have a go at dancing at mini drop-in dance classes, led by the Kirkham Henry Dance School. Ballet not your thing? On Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July, take up arms and join some brave knights on their quest to defeat the Nunnington Dragon! Grand Day Out Flamingo Land

Theme park: two words guaranteed to send children into a frenzy and parents bracing themselves for a full-on day out. It was with some trepidation that we set off for Flamingo Land on the hottest day of the year: would we end up stuck on the A64? Would we spend the whole day queuing for rides? Would we find anything for the littlest one (18 months) to enjoy? It turns out we needn’t have worried.

What is it? Flamingo Land is the closest theme park to York, with rides galore for children (and adults) of all ages. From terrifying rollercoasters to gentle carousels, there’s genuinely something for everyone. Rides aside, there’s a whole lot more to do including a zoo, cable cars and a train that circles the site.

There are well-equipped play areas, with enough imaginative, good quality play equipment that our kids would have happily stayed there for hours if they hadn’t wanted to go and see the animals.

What we did Sticking to our golden rule – arrive early – we got there just as the rides opened and had our pick of things to do. Our children are too young for full-size rollercoasters, so the Children’s Planet area was perfect for them.

They loved playing in the play areas and then breaking off to see the animals – unsurprisingly, the meerkats were a big hit. We took advantage of the lack of queues and had a go on some of the gentler rides, like the smaller roller coaster, carousel and airplanes. There’s a good selection of rides in the park for children of all ages, with clear guidance as to the height restrictions. Thrill-seeking older kids won’t be disappointed – there’s plenty of opportunity for white knuckles. www.little-vikings.co.uk www.little-vikings.co.uk

From there we moved onto the Muddy Duck Farm area with its toddler-pleasing selection of chickens, rabbits, goats and more. After a quick picnic lunch, we headed further into the zoo where we saw baboons (including some seriously cute baby ones), kangaroos, white rhinos, penguins, lemurs, giraffes, lions, tigers and other weird and wonderful creatures. It was a treat to see so many of them up close. The zoo’s also a nice contrast to the busier ride areas. The kids loved the little train ride around the park and welcomed the rest - we walked almost four miles by the time we got back to the car, so no wonder they insisted we call it a day before we’d done everything.

Food and drink There are lots of places to eat and drink, from cafes to restaurants, takeaways and and a family-friendly pub with beer garden and play area. There are loads of places for a picnic if you take your own food like we did.

Good to know If you want to extend your stay, Flamingo Land has holiday accommodation so you can make a short break out of it. They also have regular ‘parties in the park’ – check their website for the latest details.

And one of the best activities we’ve found for kids in York recently is trampolining at Energi, the new trampoline park.

‘Jump in’ says the sign at the door, but our two eldest vikings (3 and 6) sprinted in and fell in love with the vast arena of trampolines as soon as they clapped eyes on it. They put on their regulation Energi-branded socks without a fuss (miraculous) and watched the safety video without flinching, despite various alarming images of a stick man with broken limbs.

ning at Energi and having the time of their lives. The foampit was a big hit, as was the basketball zone, but they were just as happy jumping on the standard trampolines. It’s not fair to let the kids have all the fun, and we weren’t the only parents enjoying ourselves just as much as the children.

Unfortunately, really little ones (under 2) can’t jump, so our youngest is now no doubt counting down the days until her second birthday. But the good news is that there’s a lovely mezzanine cafe overlooking the park, so friends and family can have a coffee, snack or lunch while keeping an eye on the jumpers.

There are also plenty of friendly staff dotted aroundto keep an eye on things and make sure everyone jumps safely.

So did we enjoy it? Well let’s just say that we were the last ones to leave, and almost had to resort to bribery to get the kids back in the car. They spent the rest of the day tired, happy and asking nonstop when we can go back. A hit.

#4. Eat outside Make the most of the warmer days by eating outdoors while you can (and the birds can pick up the crumbs - bonus). Little Vikings Eat Out Breakfast at Bettys With all that beautiful, breakable crockery and the serene centuries-old surroundings, you might not consider Bettys a natural destination for families looking for refreshment in York. But brave the queue and you’ll be rewarded with a warm, family-friendly welcome.

Like lots of York families, Bettys is a special place for us. As children ourselves, we loved going there as a treat for banana milkshakes there with our grandparents, and now our children like to go there when we’ve got something to celebrate. To mark an extra candle on the cake for some of us, we headed off for a Bettys birthday breakfast.

The snaking queue outside Bettys is almost as much of a York landmark as Cliffords Tower and the city walls. But get there early - we’re talking not long after the doors open - and you may well get straight in.

Following its recent refurbishment, the ground floor tea room is more refined and opulent than ever, but with children we prefer the cosier and more relaxed surroundings of downstairs.

As always, the lovely staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, offering a high chair and bringing colouring-in sheets and crayons for the children that kept them occupied for the entire meal. The Little Rascals kids’ menu is full of lovely choices for www.little-vikings.co.uk

little ones, but ours predictably chose to order a stack of cinnamon toast each (they’re not ones for change). It’s what they always have and they love it, not least because it comes on a very fancy cake stand that makes them feel as though they’re eating at Buckingham Palace. And that’s a lot of the joy of eating at Bettys with kids. It’s a unique but completely authentic experience that’s so far removed from the places we usually go that they savour every minute of it (and behave a lot better than normal too - bonus). It’s a place that parents and children can enjoy together - our eggs on muffins and English breakfast were delicious and as treats go, it doesn’t get much more special, or more York, than a trip to Bettys.

#6. Take a trip to the seaside

The Yorkshire coast is glorious, with something for everyone, from fossil-hunters to ice cream addicts. Don’t fancy getting stuck in the A64 car park? Set off really early or take the country back roads to avoid the queues. Here are some of our favourite seaside destinations.

Gothic fun in Whitby

Whitby is a beautiful little ancient fishing port with a gorgeous beach and great shops and cafes. Don’t miss Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. You can also take a boat ride, eat legendary fish and chips at the Magpie Cafe (magpiecafe.co.uk), play on the arcades and see real fishing boats at work.

Robin Hood’s Bay

You’d never guess that this quaint fishing village used to be home to smugglers. It’s a wonderfully unspoilt place with not an arcade in sight. Marvel at the cliffs, take a long walk along the beach and hunt for fossils. You might even hunt out a lovely cup of tea and scone too.

#7. Go to the Great Yorkshire Fringe The Great Yorkshire Fringe is one of the best events in York’s calendar, and there are loads of shows for kids of all ages to enjoy. Make a family trip out of it and then book a babysitter for some of the things on the brilliant grown-up programme. Here’s our top three.

Tiddler & Other Terrific Tales Under the sea, out on the farm and into the jungle, these terrific tales are woven together with live music, puppetry and a whole host of colourful characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best-loved titles: Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze.

Celebrate Yorkshire Day the Yorkshire Way!

August 1st is Yorkshire Day, the annual celebration of all there is to love about our fantastic county. Here are some ways to get yourselves in the Yorkshire mood.

Adorn your house with some Yorkshire roses You’ll need: white tissue paper squares for the petals (ours was about 15cm x 15cm) and pipecleaners for the stems - Lay the sheets of tissue paper on top of each other on a flat surface.

- Take the bottom edge and fold it in about a centimentre, then flip over and fold back on the otherside. Keep folding your way up the paper until it looks like an accordion.

- Fold the accordion in half and fold about 2cm of pipe cleaner around the middle. Twist it to keep it in place and secure the flower to the stem.

- Gently open up the flower accordion by pulling the two ends together to form a circle. Then pull out each layer very carefully and fluff up without ripping. www.little-vikings.co.uk

Make Yorkshire puds Method

1. Heat oven to 220C

2. Put a drop of oil into each hole of a 12hole small pudding/muffin tin and put in the oven to heat.

3. Tip the flour into a bowl, then beat in the eggs with a whisk until smooth. Add the milk bit by bit until it’s mixed in and completely smooth. Add a little pinch of salt then put the batter into a jug.

Ingredients • 140g plain flour • 4 eggs, beaten • 200ml milk • 1 to 2 tablespoons cooking oil • Pinch of salt

4. Being very cafeful of the hot tin and oil, pour the mixture evenly into each hole. Put back in the oven for around 20 minutes until golden and risen.
