Wooooo! Happy Halloween Fun There’s lots going on at these lovely places this October half term

Ghostly goings-on at Nunnington Hall The time: the 1920s. The place: Nunnington Hall. Five guests roam the corridors but only four have been invited. With sightings of the ghost on the rise, Nunnington Hall needs brave and intrepid detectives to follow the clues and work out who’s behind their ghost. It’s like a real life episode of Scooby Doo! Budding detectives of all ages can take part in the horrible happenings of Nunnington Hall from Saturday 24th October to Sunday 1st November. It’s £2 per person with a reward for successful detectives.

As well as this ghost-busting trail, the house will be decorated in full spooky regalia for Halloween. Don your most terrifying costume on Saturday 31st October for the popular Hex Factor fancy dress contest, with certificates for the most terrifying costumes.

From pumpkin picking to witch and wizard workshops, Halloween fancy dress catwalk to spooky trail through the Enchanted Forest, there’s loads going on at Stockeld Park this half term for kids. Pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch (£3) or book in for an hour’s wizard and witch training (£8.50) That’s on top of the usual activities that make Stockeld Park a fun day out in the Yorkshire countryside, like the Nordic ski trail, play areas and maze.

Turpin at York Castle Dick Museum Stand and deliver! There’s a highwayman theme at York Castle Museum, where Dick Turpin spent the last days of his naughty life. Follow the family trail to discover the myths and truth about the infamous criminal (50p per trail, including mask), meet Dick Turpin’s hangman (certain times every day) and have a go at creating your own highwayman’s hat.

Join Boris the Bat to solve the mystery on the spooky sound trail with the help of the Beningbrough Buddies. Open every day except Monday for half-term from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November. If the weather’s ghastly there’s lots to do indoors: lantern making from Thursday 29th to Saturday 31st (small charge) and on Halloween, professional story teller Stories Alive will have terrible tales for all. National Coal Mining Museum

Gone are the days when a trip to a museum meant looking at a load of dusty relics and praying that the kids don’t sit on or break a national treasure. Most attractions have realised that they need to be exactly that - attractive, to kids and parents alike. And the Kids in Museums Awards are rewarding the best of the best museums for little visitors. One of this year’s finalists is Yorkshire museum, the National Coal Mining Museum for England, so we thought we’d head over to Wakefield to see what makes it so special for children.

The concept - The NCMME is located in the Yorkshire countryside, just outside Wakefield (about an hour from York) at a former mine. This relatively small but perfectly formed attraction is a celebration and record of all things mining-related.

We weren’t big mining enthusiasts when we parked our car (for free) in the car park, but we all had a new-found respect for miners (and their horses) by the time we left.

Things to do and see - For a fairly small museum, the NCMME packs a lot in. It tells the story of mining throughout the years in a very accessible way, with props, sounds, activities, pictures and even actors to bring the stories to life. There are three main parts to the visit: the museum itself, the underground tour and the train ride.

Head outside to meet some real pit ponies too. The museum’s free to enter and the exhibits are presented to appeal to kids of all ages. Ours loved borrowing a stack of art materials from the ‘Art Cart’ and going around the museum doing rubbings, drawing pictures inspired by what they saw.

When it came to the underground tour, we split up because you have to be five and over to don your helmet and go down in the lift to the real mine. While our two www.littlevikings.uk www.littlevikings.uk LV Issue 09.indd 8

under-fives had a fantastic time in the small but thoughtful indoor play area, our eldest headed down the pit (£3 per person). It was an eye-opening experience that he enjoyed but also found quite an assault on his senses. Older kids and adults will find it fascinating as they can really see what life was like for people working underground.

It’s an unforgettable thing to do. Above ground again, we were pleased to enjoy some time outdoors by heading up the hill on a short train ride (£1.50 per person).

Eating and drinking - There are some small picnic areas indoors and out, or you can eat at the cafe. We ate there and had a decent lunch for around £20 (sausages and mash for the kids; a huge Yorkshire pudding fest for the man of the household and a hearty bowl of soup for Mrs Viking, plus drinks). The tea is Yorkshire. Quite right too.

Our verdict - We thoroughly enjoyed our visit the the NCMME and can see why they’ve been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Awards. They’ve gone the extra mile to engage and entertain younger visitors. Even really little ones will find plenty to get involved with (our 3 year old had a lovely time and the 9 month old had a wild old time in the play area). The underground tour is unmissable for those old enough not to be worried by the dark! The museum runs regular special events and activities for families, so check their website for details. You could combine your visit with a trip to the new Hepworth gallery in Wakefield too - it’s not far and has a decent outdoor play area outside (and some decent sculptures inside...).

Yum, yum, yum Little Vikings at York Food & Drink Festival 2015 We’re delighted to be running the kids’ activities for York’s annual Food & Drink Festival. This festival of all things tasty runs 18th - 27th September and there’ll be loads of things to see, do and taste for all the family.

Come and say hello!

Gone are the days when the York food scene consisted of two curry houses, McDonald’s, a Chinese restaurant and Bettys (we exaggerate, but not much). There are now loads of fantastic places to eat out, with each corner of the globe represented.

We’re passionate about getting kids cooking, so we think it’s the perfect way to get kids thinking about and trying new foods as well as seeing how to get creative in the kitchen.

POPPIES AT YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK: NEVER FORGET Remember those striking images of the rivers of red ceramic poppies at the Tower of London last year? Each of the 888, 246 poppies represented a British or Colonial soldier lost in the First World War and over five million people made a pilgrimage to the Tower to see it for themselves. If you weren’t one of them, you might be pleased to know that the Yorkshire Sculpture Park will be playing host to Wave, a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads that was one of the key sculptural elements in the installation at the Tower of London.

You’ll find Wave in YSP’s historic Lower Lake, a 1km walk from the visitor centre and car park (a shuttle bus will be available if you can’t do it on foot).

We love visiting Yorkshire Sculpture Park – it’s a chance to see some amazing sculptures in a stunning setting just an hour or so from York. The kids love it because as well as trying to figure out what the sculptures are meant to be, they can run around outside to their heart’s desire. It’s great value too – just pay for parking. Take a picnic or choose from some quality homemade food in the cafe. If you’ve got little ones, you’ll find it easier with an off-road buggy or sling (our urban buggy has a tough time on the hilly bits!). It’s a great day out at any time of year, but Wave gives us a good excuse to go again.

Rugbyt Our eldest girl loves nothing more than wearing her brother’s age-old England rugby top and shorts around the house, so we jumped at the chance of taking her along to a session with Rugbytots. It might be a relatively recent arrival on the busy York children’s classes scene, but it’s quickly got a great reputation at the school and nursery gate. Sessions are aimed at two to seven year olds and last 45 minutes.

We headed over to Copmanthorpe one Wednesday morning and joined a group of enthusiastic little Rugbytots and their even more enthusiastic teacher, Rob. The session flew by in a flurry of activity: we played lots of games together (no standing on the sidelines for parents) that each worked on a particular skill like kicking or throwing. The activities have been cleverly designed to help children practise their colours and numbers etc. too, but not in a way that they’d notice. Rob is a very energetic and encouraging teacher who always makes sure that the kids are having fun and not struggling.

If you can’t see your child as the next Jonny Wilkinson, don’t worry: Rugbytots isn’t all about rugby. Although kids will learn skills that are central to the game, they’re just useful sporty skills to have in general. And it’s certainly not just for boys: there were other girls at our session

Our daughter loved it: she enjoyed seeing how far she could kick, pretending to be an elephant (not sure any of the other kids were doing that) and having some uninterrupted time playing with me. She left the session tired, happy and asking if she could put the England rugby kit on when she got home.

Aaaah! Fab firework displays From the place where bonfire night was born!

Let’s not dwell on the fact that notorious naughty gunpowder plotter Guy Fawkes hailed from this very city. For all his bad behaviour, at least he gave us a good excuse for an annual evening around the bonfire with the family or watching fireworks with our fingers in our ears. These are some of the best events around (but check it’s happening before you set off, especially if the weather’s bad).

KABOOM! This award-winning firework event is one of the biggest in the UK and it takes place in the spectacular surroundings of Castle Howard on Saturday 31st October. This year’s theme is ‘the movies’, with the huge firework display choreographed to the fabulous James Bond theme tunes (including the brand new one).

Food: Little Vikings Cook Sticky Toffee Pudding

It’s the season for comfort food, and what’s more comforting than a classic English sticky toffee pudding?

A highlight of our Lake District summer holiday was digging into a piping hot dish of sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream at 10.30am in the pretty village of Cartmel, the home of sticky toffee. It was pretty perfect, but this homemade version is a contender too.

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C/gas mark 4 and grease and line a tin approximately 28x18x2.5cm.

2. Simmer the dates and water in a pan for 5 mins, add bicarbonate of soda and set aside.

• 3. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until light and creamy.

• 4. Drizzle egg in gradually, beating hard. If it curdles, beat in a pinch of flour.

• 5. Stir in the sifted flour, date mixture and vanilla.

• Spoon into the tin and cook for 30 minutes or until risen and springy.

• 6. Cut into squares and keep warm.

Wednesday: toast and cereal....By the weekend we’re pretty bored of blearyeyed butter spreading and desperate to let someone else take over the breakfast service. We decided to give our toaster a well-earned morning off and headed into town to let the lovely folk at Brew & Brownie do the breakfast honours instead.

What’s on the menu? If you have trouble making decisions first thing in the morning, you might want to allow extra time to peruse the menu. From porridge with a choice of toppings to a doorstop bacon sandwich with tomato chutney, there’s something for everyone, carnivore/veggie, health-conscious/hungover, little/large.

Our little ones didn’t hesitate - they wanted pancakes. Lots of them, with none of that funny fruit stuff, thank you very much.

They were delighted with their steaming mini stacks of fresh American pancakes with syrup and all three of them (including the 9 month old) gobbled their way though them until their plates were clean. Mr Viking demolished pancakes with streaky bacon and blueberries and I flew the flag for slightly healthier eating with a delicious dish of granola. Pumpkin carving It’s not Halloween without one!

Do you throw your pointy witch’s hat on and embrace the whole Halloween thing with glee or cower in a dark room pretending to be out when the trick or treaters come calling? Either way, it must be breaching some sort of EU regulation not to have a pumpkin in the house when the clock ticks over to 31st October (whatever you do, DO NOT leave it until the day to get one. You will fail and your children will not be pleased. We speak from experience). Here’s what you need to know about picking and carving the king of orange root vegetables.

•

First, find your pumpkin. Grow one in your garden or allotment (you’ll have had to start work on this a while ago, admittedly), grab one at your local greengrocer or pick one at one of the many places going pumpkin crazy during October half term. Big isn’t always beautiful, but it will give you a larger surface area for carving. Take it home and give it a bit of a wash and dry.

•

Use a sharp serrated knife (sober, alert grown-ups only, please) to cut off the crown in a straight or zig-zagged line.

•

Use a big spoon to scoop out the seeds, flesh and other sticky orange insides you don’t need any of this unless you’re planning to make a pumpkin pie or some other seasonal treat.

•

Use a black marker to draw your design on the pumpkin. We’re traditional and do a basic scary face: triangle eyes and nose, zigzagged mouth. A quick google of other people’s pumpkin carving confirms that this is lame. If you want inspiration for more elaborate designs, get online. Use a small serrated knife to cut your design.

•

Put a tealight inside the pumpkin and celebrate that you’ve now only got 99 tealights left from the bag of 100 you bought last time you visited IKEA. Light it and admire your handiwork.

Put it outside your house at Halloween to welcome trick-or-treaters. Or don’t. It’s up to you.

The Big Draw Create a masterpiece October half term is the perfect time to check out the newly renovated York Art Gallery because they’re putting on activities to celebrate this year’s Big Draw, the campaign to get people drawing. Drop-in art activities run 24th to 30th October (11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm) and there’ll be an art heroes trail too (50p per trail including reward). A drop-in family workshop, All that Glitters is not Gold, will run on 31st October (11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm), with creative activities run by artist Jo Walton. CUTE CRAFTS WITH CONKERS - Spiders: Get an adult to make some little holes that you can stick short bits of pipecleaners into for spider legs. Glue in if necessary.

Stick on googly eyes.

- Necklaces: Ask an adult to drill holes through your conkers then thread them onto string to make a necklace.

- Caterpillars/snakes: Thread a few conkers onto a string, then draw a face using a marker pen.

Where to find conkers: there are lots of horse chestnut trees on the Knavesmire, the riverbank by the Ouse and the University of York campus. Seek out woody areas and look upwards!

HOW TO PLAY CONKERS You will need: Two players, two conkers, two pieces of string/ shoelaces 1. Get an adult to make a hole through each conker and thread through the string/lace and knot it securely.

2. Each player takes it in turns to hit the other’s conker with theirs (the conker being hit should be hanging down at arm’s length, string held firmly).

3. If the player moves the conker to avoid it being hit, the other player has another turn.

4. The player whose conker breaks first loses.
