Since the last issue, we’ve... .....tried (and loved) the gelato at new gelateria, Roberto Authentic Italian Gelato (3A Goodramgate). It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it. .....been wondering if it’s too early to book our tickets for York Theatre Royal’s pantomime, Dick Whittington (and his Meerkat), at the National Railway Museum. .....taken our eldest viking along to try a maths tuition session with First Class Learning at Tesco Askham Bar and he now wants to do it every week. .....been admiring the little goslings and laughing at how the traffic in York always stops for the geese (admittedly not so funny when you’re in a rush). .....been looking forward to finally putting away the winter coats. There’s a Robin Hood theme at Castle Howard this summer. Head out on the woodland trail, solving clues in the trees and foliage. There’ll be archery demonstrations on certain dates and you can learn about life as an outlaw at the Robin Hood tea parties (every Wednesday; book in advance). edieval Day at Knaresborough Castle Enjoy a host of family events at this JORVIK Medieval Festival event in Knaresborough. Learn sword skills at a medieval sword fighting workshop and then make an appointment with the Barber Surgeon to discover some gruesome ‘treatments’. There’ll also be combat performances, bird of prey, crafts, tours and more. While you’re there, row down the river or just enjoy a stroll in the pretty scenery. Knaresborough is lovely.

Grand Day Out

Saltaire and Salts Mill

With so many lovely places on our North Yorkshire doorstep, it takes somewhere pretty special to make us get in the car and drive a little bit further (and have to listen to the Frozen soundtrack more than once). The village of Saltaire, near Bradford, is one such gem. In fact it’s so special that it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The village was built by and named after Sir Titus Salt who also built the Salts Mill textile mill. While it might not seem an obvious day trip with kids, we have faded memories of visiting with our parents when we were younger so we packed the little vikings in the car and hoped for the best.

Things to do - We kicked off our day by piling out of the car at Salts Mill, the kids already impressed at all the massive chimneys (and us impressed by the fact that parking is free). We thought we’d just pop into the mill for lunch but somehow managed to spend a good couple of hours there. Salts Mill loves Yorkshire artist David Hockney, and David Hockney loves Salts Mill, so there were paintings, prints, posters and postcards to take in as well as work from other artists. The kids were mesmerised by it all and found it easy to relate to (lots of pictures of Yorkshire countryside and dogs!). It’s such a big place that they could run around and be a bit noisy in a way they couldn’t in a ‘proper’ art gallery. Bonus.

After lunch (more on that later), we headed out of Salts Mill to the canal for a walk and to look at the barges (there’s an ice cream barge too, which prompted Olympic standard nagging for yet more sugar). The towpath was bustling with cyclists, so it would be a good place to bring the bikes or scooters. Next stop was Roberts Park, just across from Salts Mill. and interesting play equipment for all ages. Our last stop was the big green expanse of grass in the park and the Half Moon Cafe where we finally gave into demands for ice cream. Lots of more organised families had brought balls, frisbees and picnics for an afternoon’s relaxing by the river.

Places to eat - We ate at Salts Diner, the restaurant at Salts Mill. It’s a large, bright and stylish place with an interesting menu and lots of Hockney stuff on the walls to keep the kids asking questions. Children can choose smaller portions from the menu, and ours predictably went for pizza. It was fab, fresh and in no way small (they could have shared and still had some left over). The baby viking nicked veg and Yorkshire puds from the adults’ plates and enjoyed her funky highchair. It’s a relaxing place to eat with kids because of the space and general hubbub, and it helps that the food is really good. There are other pubs and cafes within a 5 minute walk of the Mill.

Good to know - Leave the car and take the train instead. It’s about 50 minutes from York, with one change at Leeds. There are lovely shops at Salts Mill selling things like homeware, pictures, books and cards so it’s a good place for presents.

The verdict - This was a top day out that we all enjoyed. Saltaire is a special place and there’s plenty to do within short walking distance of the car, especially if the weather’s good. It needn’t cost much once you’re there; in fact, pack a picnic and you don’t need to spend anything at all. Except on ice cream, of course.

But now I’m a parent too, I understand the magical restorative powers of caffeine and sugar: my parents were in desperate need of coffee and cake to power them through the next part of the day. There’s little that a trip to a café can’t do to revive flagging family spirits, although the kids aren’t always keen.

One café that we reckon could entice the most reluctant child through its doors is York Cocoa House. For anyone with even the slightest liking for chocolate, it’s a dream come true. Not only can you choose from a huge array of homemade chocolate-inspired items on the menu (including a separate hot chocolate menu), but you can also book onto a workshop to make your very own chocolate creations. One activity you don’t need to book in advance is chocolate lollipop making, so we decided to pop in with the kids to try it out.

t York Cocoa House children – normally exhausted from school and nursery - bounded to town and into the Cocoa House without the slightest complaint. We took our seats and were given some jars of toppings, small paper cases, a pot of melted chocolate each and a tray with instructions on how to make our lollies. The kids chose which toppings they’d like (all of them, obviously) and scooped them into the case before arranging them artfully onto the lolly shapes that they’d made with the melted chocolate.

It’s really simple, which suited us fine: the hardest part was trying to stop them eat all the toppings before they hit the lolly. The lollies were then whisked away to set, so we had 20 minutes to have a long and meaningful conversation. Oh, hang on. No, we spent the next 20 minutes with the kids amusing themselves by looking at/ rearranging all the chocolate-related books in the Cocoa House’s café. We could have left and come back to collect the lollies, but actually it was nice to have a drink together and read a bit of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. Before we knew it, our creations were ready and we were heading out into the sunshine with our huge and rather spectacular lollies, desperately hoping they wouldn’t melt before we got home.

Expect a dizzying array of delicious homemade ice cream and sorbets as well as traditional, nostalgiainducing sweets.

Roberto Authentic Italian Gelato, 3A Goodramgate, York This newcomer to the York ice cream scene is well worth a visit for some of the best homemade gelato the city has to offer. It’s really delicious so get there early to avoid long queues. Eat in the stylish café or enjoy in Dean’s Gardens next to the Minster.

Two Hoots Ice Cream Boat, usually moored next to York’s Millenium Bridge Ice cream vans are so last century; in York, it’s all about the ice cream boat. The Two Hoots ice cream boat has become a real institution, with crowds flocking to the riverbank for fab homemade ice cream when the sun shines (and even if it doesn’t).

Little Vikings Eat Out Lunch at Ambiente Tapas Tapas on Fossgate is the closest our kids are going to get to a Mediterranean holiday vibe this summer.

Would the fussy eaters stick with the bread basket or get stuck in? We headed to Ambiente Tapas on Fossgate to find out.

The concept You don’t have to endure a short-haul flight with the kids to enjoy

authentic tapas this summer (welcome news to those of us who aren’t venturing any further than the Lake District anytime soon; Ambleside is lovely this time of year, even if it is on the wrong side of the Pennines). Ambiente Tapas is a small independent chain with restaurants in Leeds and York offering gourmet tapas in a relaxed and stylish setting. As well as the original Goodramgate restaurant, they’ve just opened more spacious new premises on Fossgate. That’s where we headed with three generations of family to celebrate Father’s Day.

The Place Ambiente is informal and welcoming to families, but the pared-down, industrial style makes it feel upmarket and a treat for parents. Our table was next to the open ‘theatre kitchen’ which provided lots of entertainment for the kids. No need for crayons and activity sheets when you can watch the chefs in action. Highchairs are provided; in fact ours was waiting for us at the table when we arrived - a small but thoughtful touch.

The food The menu is long and varied, so there should be something for

even the pickiest palate. They suggest that adults choose 3 or 4 different dishes each to share, and we got a couple extra for the little ones too. The lovely waiting staff were happy to recommend dishes that might go down well with the kids and even suggested small adjustments that could be made to make them less spicy. As a result, our kids tucked into all sorts of dishes that they wouldn’t normally touch. They wolfed down piles of patatas bravas, a henhouse worth of chicken wings, green beans with garlic, sundried tomatoes and pine nuts, dates wrapped in Serrano ham and, as usual, loads of fresh bread. Even the baby, who’s in the messy midst of weaning, threw herself into the food (almost too literally - sorry for the crumbs and stuff, guys). The food was all absolutely delicious fresh, interesting and really tasty.

The verdict Given that our kids wouldn’t eat tapas when we were

actually on holiday in Spain, we had fairly low expectations of how this lunch would go. How wrong we were. The imaginative dishes won the family over - all three generations of us. And it was a good lesson for us know-it-all parents: there’s no such thing as a fussy eater, just the wrong food!

#5. Picnics in the park (because it’s free fun in the fresh air) The British summer is all too short, so get in as many picnics as you can before the weather turns. Here are some nice spots for it.

Museum Gardens (Museum Gardens, York YO1 7FR) This ten-acre botanical garden plays host to the Yorkshire Museum. Its riverside location and stunning medieval ruins make it a special place.

We say – Slap bang in the middle of the city, it’s the perfect place to run off energy.

There might not be any play equipment but there are enough ruins and woodland to explore and squirrels to spot.

Good to know – This is a popular place for a picnic, with loads of places nearby to pick up a sandwich. It gets busy when the sun’s out, but there’s plenty of space.

Combine with a trip to the library or a trip round the Yorkshire Museum (under 16s go free).

Rowntree Park (Terry Avenue, York YO23 1JQ) This beautiful place has lots going on including two well-equipped and maintained play areas for all ages, a small lake with ducks and geese, tennis courts to hire, a skate park, a basketball court and gardens.

or feeling superior astride the huge bronze horse statue. The Rowntree Park Reading Café is a special place with park views, books to borrow/browse and great coffee.

Good to know – Don’t wear your best shoes! Lots of geese make for mucky grass.

Younger children will enjoy browsing the selection of children’s books at the café while they have a snack. Nearby Bishopthorpe Road has plenty of places for picnic provisions.

Homestead Park (The Homestead Park, 40 Water End, York YO30 6WP) Yet another reason to thank the Rowntree family who created this lovely place back in the 1920s. As well as beautiful gardens, there are grassy areas for ball games, a wellstocked play area with a separate section for under-sevens, and a pond.

We say – A good option for children up to the age of 12. Some of the equipment is dated, but that’s part of its charm. There’s a small kiosk that serves hot drinks and ice creams. Take a football if you fancy a kickabout.

Good to know – Ample grassy areas and lots of benches make this a good spot for a picnic (but bring it with you – there’s nowhere very close to buy a sandwich). There’s a small car park but it does get busy so arrive early on a sunny day.

Dean’s Park, next to York Minster A little mention for this relatively small patch grass adjacent to the entrance to York Minster.

Easy to walk past, but this is a lovely spot for enjoying a sandwich or ice cream from one of the many fab cafes and shops nearby. A good place to know if you’re looking for a bit of peace away from the bustling cobbles.

With the best will in the world, going to the same park day-in, day-out, will eventually get a little bit dull. So why not try something you’ve not got round to doing yet? There are loads of ideas for things to do all year round on the Little Vikings website, and here are just a few of them.

Stuck in a rut or just looking for inspiration? How about...

Visiting a real windmill - Holgate Windmill is just outside the city but makes a nice change from the usual attractions. It’s open various weekends - check the website for info: holgatewindmill.org.

Stop tutting at the racegoing rabble and join them instead. Entry to York Racecourse’s Course Enclosure - the area across the track from the main stands - is cheap and a good first experience of racing. You can take a picnic and your own booze. Just try not to lose the kids’ pocket money on the horses.

#8. Pursefriendly activities (because summer shouldn’t break the bank) It’s lovely spending more time with the kids during the holidays, but it can take its toll on the pocket. Thankfully there are plenty of free and cheap things to do in and around York for families – here are our some of our best things to do that don’t cost the earth.

Go for a walk…. …..on the walls There’s almost 2 miles of medieval wall to choose from, all with fantastic views, and it’s totally free. If little feet aren’t up to a big hike, just choose a small section. It’s a brilliant way to get a different perspective on the city, but better suited to older children (it’s a no-go for buggies). …..to find the felines on the Cat Trail Look up while you’re wandering around York city centre and you might just see a cat statue or two. They were originally put there to ward off plague-carrying creatures but now they’re a fun addition to many buildings. Pick up a trail leaflet at York Glass Ltd (34 Shambles, York YO1 7LX). …..by the river Walk out of town and up to the Millenium Bridge (between Fulford and South Bank), splash out on an ice cream at the ice cream boat if it’s moored and combine with a trip to Rowntree Park. …..through the streets From awesome street entertainers to talented buskers, tiny alleyways to secret passages, cobbled streets to grand squares, there’s loads to see. Enjoy the magnificent Yorkshire Sculpture Park (www.ysp.co.uk) for just the price of parking. It’s a top day out in the Yorkshire countryside with lots to see and do. You also only need to pay for parking at Brimham Rocks too (£5/6 and even that’s free for National Trust members with valid car sticker). It’s a great day out exploring the weird and wonderful rock formations with stunning views of Nidderdale.

Pay once, go back all year

The initial entry price might not be especially appealing, but pay once and you won’t need to pay for entry for another 12 months at Halifax children’s museum Eureka! At the moment, the same goes for The Deep, JORVIK and DIG.

#10. Festival fun

(because you’re never too young or too old)

Just because you’ve got kids doesn’t mean you have to bid a fond farewell to your festival days. Festivals have wised up to welcoming families and you don’t have to trek to the West Country to enjoy one The Galtres Parklands Festival We’d walk 500 miles to see The Proclaimers but thankfully we don’t have to because they’re playing at Galtres, the festival of music and dance at Duncombe Park near Helmsley (28th to 30th August). Over 100 acts are performing over the weekend and it’s great for families. This year there’s a Wild West theme to the family area, as well as the traditional funfair, silent disco, magicians, poets and performers. Go for the day or stay the weekend. We went for the day last year and our little Vikings (then four and two) loved it. It was a gentle introduction to the delights of a festival, a stone’s throw from home. How to

Make playdough Method

1. Mix together the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the water and oil.

2. Knead well until mixture is smooth about 10 mins. You might need to add a bit more flour or water until the consistency is smooth but not sticky.

3. Add food colouring and knead until the colour is fully blended.

4. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until chilled enough to use.

Ingredients 250g plain flour 50g salt 140ml water 1 to 2 tablespoons cooking oil Few drops food colouring (optional) Drop of lavender oil (optional but makes it smell good and here’s hoping it has a relaxing effect!)
