Our very own free York walking trail is the best way to explore the city on foot with your children, minus the moaning. Recommended by The Sunday Times and supported by Visit York, the Little Vikings I Spy Trail is available all year round.
Shoes and coats on - you’ve got 22 weird and wonderful things to spot (for little legs, you can just do the first 10 clues). The map is all you need – follow the route and see how many things you can tick off.
Top marks if you get them all (some are obvious but others are trickier, so you’ll need to keep your wits about you and don’t forget to look up!).

Amble down Diagon Alley (well, York’s Shambles!)
With higgledy-piggledy rooftops, cobbles aplenty and more than a hint of Diagon Alley about it, it’s easy to see why Shambles - York’s famous medieval thoroughfare - is said to have inspired JK Rowling. Steeped in proper history, it’s also York’s number one spot for Potter fans and the perfect spot for some brilliant photos.

There’s nothing like an adventure playground to please the younger members of the family, and the area around York is positively brimming with some brilliant ones. There are some amazing places to meet furry friends, too, so whether they can’t get enough of a basket swing or would rather have an animal encounter, these are our top recommendations.
Stockeld Park
Under half an hour from York, Stockeld Park is groaning with excellent adventure playgrounds. Not only is their epic Enchanted Forest awash with amazing themed outdoor playgrounds, but it’s also home to Playhive, one of Europe’s biggest (and most impressive) indoor play areas so no need to worry about the weather. Get there early - it’s a fantastic, full day out for all ages.

Excellent for a day trip, even better for a weekend (or longer), there are more things to do on the Yorkshire coast than there are grains of sand on Scarborough’s South Bay. Beware the traffic during the summer (set off early or take the train) but it’s well worth the journey. Here are some of our seaside highlights.
Filey - The quieter cousin to the larger coastal towns, the pretty town of Filey is big on charm. Not only has it won Sunday Times Beach of the Year for its vast expanse of sand, but there are rockpools to explore, gardens to discover and a nice selection of
Whitby - The beautiful fishing town of Whitby is a wonderful place to visit with kids. Enjoy a boat trip, tuck into fish and chips and climb the steps up to Whitby Abbey. It’s a long way up but well worth the effort for stunning sea views from the ruins of this former monastery.
Scarborough - One of the most popular seaside resorts in the country, we love Scarborough’s charms. The bustling South Bay great for arcades and sandcastles, but the rugged, less busy North Bay worth a visit. Hire a pedalo at Peasholm Park and don’t miss Scarborough Castle (pack a kite!).

Bridlington - Bridlington is another popular option for a coastal day out thanks to its beautiful sandy beaches. Sewerby Hall is our top pick for families, with acres of gardens to explore, furry and feathered creatures to meet at the zoo, play area and regular children’s activities in the school holidays. From there you can walk or take the land train down to the beach too. Bridlington’s Splash Zone is a great value swimming pool with slides, and RSPB Bempton Cliffs is the best place to birdwatch - you might even spot a puffin!
