The ground is littered with conkers, the nights are drawing in and there’s a smell of bonfires in the air. Autumn is upon us and we couldn’t be more excited as there’s so much coming up in and around York over the next few weeks. Whether you’d like to carve a pumpkin in a medieval hall, pick your own pumpkin from a vast pumpkin patch, catch Horrible Histories on tour or visit York’s School of Magic, there’s something for children of all ages.

The sound of sleigh bells is in the distance too, so don’t delay if you’d like to book a festive experience or two. All the best Christmas experiences sell out early, so it’s best to get organised and start thinking about it now. We’ve got some lovely ideas and inspiration for you, so read on and take your pick.

There’s plenty to see and do both indoors and outside at Nunnington this autumn. Follow the folklore and superstitions trail – will you be lucky or unlucky? Head into the orchards to see how many different types of apples you can find, or visit the art exhibition to see art inspired by nature and the seasons. See if you can spot a peacock while you’re there, and pop into the tearoom if you fancy refuelling with a hot drink or something to eat.

The Witching Hour at Mother Shipton’s

Halloween lantern walks and storytelling at Northwood Trail

It’s the Witching Hour, and deep in the spooky forest where a world-famous Prophetess was said to have been born during a terrifying thunderstorm, the spirits are flying high. You may hear the cackle of old souls wandering the ancient woodland or feel a shiver down your spine as you step into the Haunted Halloween Village. Suitable for all ages, watch out for witches, ghosts, and creepy skeletons around every corner! There’s frightful fun to be had with photo opportunities and fancy dress competitions. This October half term, Northwood Trail near Stamford Bridge is hosting guided walks with strange tales through the twilight fairy woods.

These lantern walks take place at dusk and first dark and are aimed at little ones or those of all ages who would rather not be scared witless, but want to enjoy a more seasonal experience instead. Pumpkin carving at Bedern Hall Enjoy a family pumpkin carving workshop in the suitably spooky surrounds of Bedern Hall in York this October half term. Specially lit for the event, the hall will be an atmospheric space for the workshop led by Kathrine Armstrong Bisson of Fleuradamo. There’ll be soup and hot dogs and parkin for all, mulled cider for grown-ups and local apple juice for the kids (included in the price).

Visit the pumpkin patch at Yorkshire Lavender If you’re looking for a pretty place to pick a pumpkin around York this autumn, Yorkshire Lavender is a great option. As well as the pumpkin patch where you can pick your own small pumpkin, there’s a children’s play area, craft table, face painting and access to the gardens. Piglets Pumpkin Festival

A VERY MAGICAL ADVENTURE, AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS One of the questions we’re asked a lot by families wanting something fun to do in York with their children is which ghost tour we’d recommend, and whether they’re suitable for kids. While some of them claim to cater for all ages, the majority have definite nightmare potential for younger children. We love The Bloody Tour of York, for example: it’s funny, informative and entertaining from start to finish. But while it’s perfect for fans of Horrible Histories, it’s definitely less suitable for children who haven’t yet graduated from CBeebies to CBBC. There was a gap in the market for something interactive for younger children, so it was music to our ears when we heard that A Very Magical Adventure was launching immersive Issue 40

adventures around York aimed at families with younger children. The adventures change throughout the year, but all of them are led by a small cast of professional actors. We took along our 6 year-old to the summer adventure to try it for ourselves, hoping that it would tick the boxes of being neither too grown-up nor too babyish for our fairly fussy youngest child.

Having been a bit worried that we wouldn’t be able to find our group, it turned out that there was no missing them; their medieval outfits and props had already attracted the attention of many passing tourists with their camera phones. From the outset, our guides - two hilarious knights and a long-suffering princess - were in full character. Impressively they didn’t 14 www.little-vikings.co.uk

slip out of character for the entire two hour experience: no mean feat when they had to navigate busy streets, cross roads and interact with curious members of the public.

Once our quest for eggs was complete, we were led back into the city centre to a secret meeting place (no spoilers) where, to our surprise,

there were two more cast members waiting for us. The first, a brilliantly grumpy cook, greeted us and led us to a chamber decked out in magical props where the second, a wizard, led a short potions lesson.

After that, we were taken into another dark and atmospheric room with tables and chairs, ‘Madame Mandragora’s Scrumdiddlyicious Cauldron of Treats’, where we could order from a short menu of magic-themed treats. Although there are a few parent-pleasing savoury items on the menu, the focus is on fizzing potions, curious cupcakes and a cake trolley groaning with temptation.

Our little one was delighted to see Unicorn Essence on offer, having tried it at The Hole in Wand, while I opted for a good old cup of tea (how very muggle).

While we polished off our refreshments, our medieval friends returned for the finale to their escapades and to bestow a knighthood on all the young adventurers. Not one to always join in, our daughter went to the front and received her knighthood quite happily - a definite sign that she’d enjoyed herself. In fact she went on about it so much when we got home that our other two children wished they’d come along too.

A Very Magical Adventure is a very welcome addition to the York family attraction scene, and we were impressed. Not only is the young cast very good indeed, but the script is excellent: witty and clever, with no attempts to try to shoe-horn in any facts about York that would have gone straight over the children’s heads. It’s pitched perfectly for younger children who would be terrified by a ghost walk or bored by a longer tour. There’s less in it for parents, of course, but there’s nothing better than seeing your kids laughing their heads off (not literally of course - that’s one for the ghost tours).

Ooooh! The Little York Ghost Hunt returns The Little York Ghost Hunt is back for 2021! Once again, 100 numbered little ghosts from York Ghost Merchants will be hidden on ledges and in crevices along certain streets in York city centre between 6pm and 8pm from Monday 25th to Thursday 28th October 2021. If you’re lucky enough to find one, you can take it home. Sounds easy? Take it from us, it’s not! We spent ages looking last year and didn’t find a single thing. It didn’t matter though – it was a lovely atmospheric thing to do, totally free and a good opportunity for younger children to enjoy being out at night (always an exciting thing). If there’s one family-friendly business that’s emerged bolder and brighter in spite of everything, it’s The Web Adventure Park (locally known as Creepy Crawlies). It’s long been one of the best places to take children in York, but they received very little support during the pandemic and their future was very much in the balance. It was sink or swim, and we’re delighted to say that they’re swimming after investing £250k in the park. We were invited along with our children to see the changes for ourselves and were really impressed: here are five reasons we’d recommend it to other families. www.facebook.com/LittleVikingsUK

You can stay all day

It’s lucky that we didn’t have any plans for the rest of the day that we visited because we ended up staying SIX HOURS! Every time I thought they were so hot and sweaty that they’d need to call it a day, they just sat down for five minutes, had a drink and ran off again! It was so good to see them all enjoying themselves, running about and having a laugh. The only downside was that I hadn’t taken a book or something to do! I’ve spent so many hours clambering up the play frames and following them everywhere that I’m not used to being able to let them explore indoors on their own. It was lovely, but next time I’m definitely taking some work to do or something to read. I was very grateful for the cafe for caffeine fixes and snacks. The kids enjoyed their pizza lunch too.

There are loads of fun new activities to try Whether it’s your first visit to The Web Adventure Park or you’ve been a thousand times before, you’ll be amazed at all the changes. Our kids have been sliding down the massive purple slides since they were tiny and they’ve been to loads of birthday parties there too, so it’s fair to say that we’re familiar with what’s on offer.

Until now. Although I’d told them that there would be new things to do, they were still really surprised by how many new things there were to do. The bigger kids adored the rollercoaster and fairground rides aimed at older children, and it was so nice to be able to say yes to them going on everything instead of worrying about how much we were spending (apart from hook a duck, it’s all included in the price). We all loved playing dinosaur crazy golf, and it was nice to have the option of a family activity to do together. Of the new additions, the ninja course was probably the most popular with all of our children regardless of their age – they spent hours running, jumping, climbing and racing each other through it. It’s a simple idea but has been done really well – it’s a hit!

There’s more for older children

Our eldest has reached that point where some of the things he used to do when he was little are starting to lose their appeal. I’d thought his Web Adventure Park days were numbered and he might not enjoy himself this time, but he had a ball. He took a friend and the pair of them had the (very sweaty) time of their lives on the fairground rides, ninja course and playing football. We could also have upgraded to book them onto the Wired High Ropes which is suitable for 7+ but there was no need as they were

having so much fun. The new parts of the park have opened it up for slightly older children, so we’ll be back with all of them again instead of leaving him at home!

But younger children don’t miss out either It’s not just older kids who benefit from the new changes: our youngest (6) loved the new additions too, especially the Pony Express and double carousel. We enjoyed walking around the new animal area too, and having the usual conversation about whether we can get a horse/guinea pig/chickens (that’ll be a no, sorry!).

The crazy golf wasn’t too challenging for her, either, so she could join in and have a reasonable chance of getting the ball in the hole. Babies are always well catered for, with the lovely sensory zone to themselves, and for toddlers and pre-schoolers, the Buggington mini-village is hard to beat for fun role play.

cheapest family activity in York, it’s an excellent facility that has just got even better. Prices have gone up slightly since it reopened, but the amount of work, effort and investment that has gone into it is phenomenal and shows in the fact that we stayed a lot longer than we usually do (I had to turf the kids out because it was nearly teatime – they didn’t want to leave). It’s great in all weathers, is brilliant active fun and is very well run and maintained.

To get your money’s worth, arrive early and stay as long as you can!

Little Vikings eat...at The Cat’s Whiskers There’s no birthday that our children look forward to quite as much as their tenth. Not because they’re finally in double figures or they’re edging towards the end of primary school, but because they can finally go to York’s only cat cafe, The Cat’s Whiskers on Goodramgate.

Our eldest anticipated his 10th birthday with the same excitement as a 17 yearold looks forward to their first legal pint, knowing that he would be able to hang out with a whole load of cats for an hour. We’ve looked through the window hundreds of times to try to get a glimpse of a kitten or two, but because of their (sensible) age restriction it’s been out of bounds until now.

So on the birthday boy’s orders, we booked a weekend timeslot and headed along in the hope of making some new furry friends.

How it works - As a general rule you can’t just drop into The Cat’s Whiskers on a whim - you need to pre-book a time slot. This gives you an hour in the cafe and costs £7 per person. All visitors need to be aged 10+.

First impressions - To prevent any escapees, there’s a fairly strict entry procedure. Not only do you have to pre-book online, but you have to be let in by a member of staff and agree to the rules (no picking up the cats etc) before you’re allowed inside the cafe itself. It’s all done in a friendly and relaxed way and still feels like a warm welcome.

The cafe itself is light and airy, with white walls adorned hung with stylish cat beds and cat toys and accessories dotted all over the place. If our own cats saw it, they’d be green with envy (they’ve even got a huge cat wheel, like a supersized hamster wheel!). There are, of course, a lot of cats skulking, snoozing and playing, too. There’s seating across two floors, with a large open plan area downstairs and two cosier rooms upstairs. We’ve been twice now and we prefer the upstairs rooms because they’re lighter and - crucially - seem to attract more cats! The room that overlooks Goodramgate is our favourite, and the cats seem to like it too - there were several of them sleeping in the window, some curled up in the corner and another one sharing the sofa with our son (much to his delight).

What’s on the menu - There’s no obligation to have anything to eat or drink, given that you have paid for entry but this being a birthday treat, we decided to have a drink and slice of cake from the short menu. There’s a selection of cakes and hot and cold drinks on offer, but no meals. This seems sensible, given that it would have to be ordered, delivered and eaten within an hour which isn’t very relaxing. Instead we enjoyed our caramel shortbread and carrot cake in relative peace, even though we did have to use various tactics to keep the cats from pinching them from our plate (thankfully plate covers are provided). With two cats at home, we’re well used to underhand food-stealing tactics, so we just found it funny, but there’s no doubt that The Cat’s Whiskers is for die-hard cat lovers only. Even though we live with cats, it felt like a real treat to be among so many other cats of different colours, shapes and sizes. The staff told us their names and a bit about their background, personality and relationships with each other, which made us fall in love with them even more. The only problem was explaining to our cat-mad kid over and over again why we couldn’t take them home with us.

The verdict - For cat fans young and old, this place really is the cat’s whiskers.

Betsy Buglove Saves the Bees From local York author Catherine Jacob, Betsy Buglove Saves the Bees taps into the nature-loving child who also enjoys adventure. Throw in facts like a grasshopper’s ears are on its belly, and the learning is received by grown up readers as well. Sparklingly illustrated by Lucy Fleming, the rhyming style entices you and your listener into the story.

In verse you learn about ecology and how each insect, however small, has a big and important part to play in keeping all of us healthy and alive.

Brain-fizzing bug facts will have you learning every time you read it, and you will be asked to do that lots, so be thankful it’s not us but woodlice that can have up to 200 children!

A Dinosaur Ate My Sister Here’s a book that will appeal to anyone who has to share a house with an annoying sister. And if they’re a Marcus Rashford fan, even better as he’s recommended it. It’s perfect escapism, with plenty of humour and brilliant illustrations. Written by Pooja Puri, it’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy meets Jurassic Park.

Shadow Cat Summer This story features a pair of twins whose mum is an alcoholic who has gone missing. While Mum goes into rehab, the twins stay in Scotland with an aunt and her family, where they’re introduced to a rural outdoor life and a mysterious big cat. Written

by Rebecca Smith, the book deals sensitively with difficult issues and gives children comfort that they are not alone.

Little Vikings Make...

Autumn Leaf Lantern

The summer is coming to an end, the leaves are falling and nights are getting longer. It’s the perfect time for cosy evenings drinking hot chocolate by lantern light. Why not use some of those beautiful autumn leaves to make your very own lantern? Thanks to Gemma from Hoglets for providing us with this lovely craft.

You will need: • A toilet roll • A dried leaf • Some light coloured tissue paper or baking paper • A glue stick • Some colored pens/pencils/crayons • A pair of Scissors • A battery powered tealight • Some sellotape Issue 40

1. Take your scissors and cut a large hole/window in the front of your toilet roll bigger than the leaf you have chosen.

2. Take your coloured pens and decorate your entire toilet roll.

3. Cut a piece of tissue paper/baking paper bigger than the window on your lantern.

Using the sellotape, attach the tissue paper to the inside of the toilet roll covering the window. Make the tissue paper is as tight as possible 4. Using lots of glue, cover the back of your leaf and secure onto the tissue paper. Pinch the leaf to the paper and wait a few seconds until it’s dry.

5. Turn on your tea light , place your lantern over the top of the light and let it glow!

Food: Little Vikings bake… spooky cookies

What better recipe for your little monsters to get stuck into this October than these spooky biscuits? This recipe makes a big batch of butter biscuits - either use the whole lot or divide it into two and put half in the freezer for a later date. You can decorate them like mummies, zombies or any other creepy character.

Method 1. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. You can do this by hand or with a mixer 2. Add the vanilla and egg or milk and mix well 3. Add the flour bit by bit and mix until it comes together as a firm dough 4. Put the dough ball into the fridge for an hour (or break into two and put half in the freezer at this point) 5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into shapes of your choice.

6. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes until golden (they may not look completely done but they will firm up as they cool) 7. Transfer to a rack and allow to cool totally before decorating 8. Make the icing by adding a tablespoon or so of water to the icing sugar, then pipe onto the biscuits using an icing bag with a nozzle. Add any other decorations, like googly eyes, for a super spooky effect Issue 40

Ingredients • 250g butter, softened (salted or unsalted) • 140g icing sugar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 egg yolk or a tablespoon of milk • 375g plain flour

For the decoration (or you can use shop-bought icing - we did!)
