It’s May, which means that almost everywhere is open again - hooray! Family days out are back with a bang, and there are lots of lovely places to explore this May half term. Oh, how we’ve missed you!

Half term adventures at Piglets Adventure Farm

Superhero week at Stockeld Park Superheroes of the world unite as Spiderman, Thor, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Hulk and Iron Man descend on Stockeld Park. There’ll be a superhero trail and the chance to meet Iron Man himself, as well as the usual Stockeld Park fun, from the Enchanted Forest to the maze, go karts and outdoor inflatables.

Join the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Mother Shipton’s Head down the rabbit hole for a magical adventure at Mother Shipton’s in Knaresborough! You’ll be grinning like a Cheshire cat when you explore the wonderland of themed displays and fantastical photo opportunities.

Do the Welly Walk at Bolton Abbey The ever-popular Bolton Abbey Welly Walk is back for 2021. It’s a fun, oneway woodland walk with equipment dotted along the route to climb over, scramble under and balance on. Start at the stepping stones and work your way towards the Cavendish Pavilion where you can get refreshments.

There’s no minimum age requirement, but it’s best suited to confident walkers and climbers. It’s a brilliant way for kids to get some exercise without really noticing, and walking through the pretty woods is a treat for the whole family. Note that the terrain is undulating and therefore not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs (and we’d recommend sensible footwear too!).

Escape the day-today at the National Railway Museum Great news for train fans young and old: the National Railway Museum is just in time for May half term (19th May). The hugely enjoyable Miniature Railway will be back, so hop aboard for a little taste of train travel. Unleash your curiosity with pop-up science shows during the holiday, which will bring science and engineering alive for all ages through simple, relatable concepts and play.

Check out their new exhibition, Railway Heroes, showcasing the tremendous railway workers who have helped key workers to and from their jobs and given back to their communities—and country—during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are also lunch packages available to book in advance, with options for adults and children. Booking ahead will allow you to skip the queue to pick up your food. There are also picnic tables throughout the site if you bring your own snacks.

National Railway Museum is open 10.00-17.00, Wednesday to Sunday during term time and every day during selected holiday dates. WIZARD MINI-GOLF OPENING THIS MAY! York’s newest and most magical family-friendly attraction is set to open shortly, and trainee witches and wizards can buy tickets from today for a spellbinding introductory price. The Hole in Wand, a wizard-themed minigolf experience in York’s Coppergate Centre, will open on 17th May 2021 and it promises to be an out-of-this-world experience for all ages.

Embark on the course to hunt for Grobblenook the gargoyle who has made his home among the bubbling cauldrons and magical portals of The Hole in Wand. At the end of your adventure, discover whether you have the magical powers of a serpent, basilisk, unicorn or wizard. Every player will receive a magical potion gift to take home, too.

If your quest has taken it out of you, why not recharge your magical batteries with a selection of fantastical food offerings, from Wand Dogs to Uni-popcorn and GrobbleNachos. FAMILY ADVENTURE WALKS IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES

Fancy a proper family walk, but not sure where to start? A guided walk could be the answer.

Many families have discovered a newfound appreciation of walking during the various lock-downs and restrictions over the last year and are now looking to keep up the outdoor adventures but explore further afield. With that in mind, Muddy Boots Walking Holidays, a small family business based in the Yorkshire Dales, has just launched a new guided Family Adventure Walk.

The adventure walk is more than a ’standard’ guided walk and has been designed to get the whole family enjoying a fun day out in the countryside while also picking up

some handy skills and knowledge to inspire the kids to become nature lovers and independent explorers!

Starting from Kettlewell in Wharfedale, the route covers 4.5 miles of stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery. Muddy Boots get the family engaged early by helping to plan the route before heading uphill to gain stunning views up and down the valley. The return leg is a gentle stroll along the River Wharfe with opportunities for paddling and stone skimming!

Along the way, you find out how to squeeze the family into a storm shelter, cook simple food on the go, look at what land you are entitled to

The idea behind the Family Adventure Walk is to help to give both children and parents a bit of a jump-start in planning their own adventures and exploring the

fantastic countryside Britain has to offer, and they hope it will help them develop a love of the natural world on their doorstep.

NEW! TINY DIGGERS SESSIONS FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS Looking for a fun, safe, regular meet-up for parents, babies and toddlers in York? Our friends at the JORVIK Group are launching a new one this spring and it sounds fantastic (they had us at 'free biscuits'). From April, join Tiny Diggers - a new group promoting sensory play for babies and toddlers every Monday and Wednesday morning at DIG: An Archaeological Adventure, St Saviourgate in York city centre.

With soft play and many parent and baby groups still not operating, they’ve created two sessions designed exclusively for babies and toddlers – a chance to play in a safe, tactile environment that uses textures found in archaeology to introduce touch-based play. Sessions are suitable for little ones aged up to 4 years. They’re limiting numbers in each session so that they can keep to social distancing guidelines, and will be offering free coffee and biscuits for parents and carers to enjoy as they socialise.

The group will run on a six-week cycle, with different themed content each week to introduce varied stimuli, from treasure hunts to messy play, created by the Early Years team to help develop fine motor skills and engage all the senses. Get digging!

INTRODUCING THE NEW LITTLE VIKINGS I SPY TRAIL! I spy with my little eye a clock, a cat and a flag! We've been busy working on something new behind the scenes for the past few months and we're so excited to launch a brand new walking trail for York: the Little Vikings I Spy Trail. We're really grateful to Visit York for supporting our project and for helping to make this permanent new walking trail around York a reality.

With the help of our own three children, we've put together a lovely circular route with twenty-two weird and wonderful things to spot along the way.

Starting and ending at the Visit York Information Centre on Museum Street, the I Spy Trail will have you strolling down snickleways, gaping at the city's medieval gates and ambling down the Shambles, ticking off iconic and eccentric landmarks along the way.

We know from bitter experience just how much persuasion, negotiation and bare-faced bribery can be involved in getting children to put one foot in front of the other, and we hope that this is one walk that they will actively enjoy. We would, of course, encourage you to enjoy a coffee or ice cream along the way (or even a mulled wine if the season permits - this is a permanent, all-seasons activity that's available all year round).

How to do the Little Vikings I Spy Trail Want to explore York on foot with your children, but minus the moaning? Then the Little Vikings I Spy Trail of York is just the thing! Our brand new, free walking of York is available all year round - all you have to do is collect the map and get your shoes and coats on! The map should be all that you need - follow the route and see how many things you can tick off. Top marks if you get them all (some are obvious but others are trickier, so you'll need to keep your wits about you and don't forget to look up!).

The Phantom Tollbooth

The Day the Screens Went Blank

is a great story to be read to children because it’s just funny enough to keep adults amused. Buy it for your kids and ask to borrow it! The story takes a young, bored boy, Milo, through another world which plays on words and numbers. A real adventure with secret learning going on too. Written over fifty years ago by Norton Juster who died in March at the age of 91, it’s a classic tale and a delight to read even for the umpteenth time. Great for 11 years upwards who will gladly explain all the grammatical jokes to parents.

Can you Keep a Secret

by Melissa Castrillon, is a beautiful picture book with a heart for the survival of our planet and the animals who share it with us, even if these ones are magical. A dragon, gryphon and a winged lion walk into this book and to save them the hero must keep them secret. Grown-ups are the baddies, and we have lessons to learn from the young about looking after the world that we just borrow for our lifetime.

Little Vikings Make...

A FLYING BUTTERFLY

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and gardens are full of insects. So taking a bit of inspiration from nature let’s make a fun flying butterfly all of your very own to brighten up your bedroom.

1. Place your toilet roll in the middle of your cardboard and draw around it. Then draw some large butterfly wings attached to the rectangle you’ve just drawn. Now cut out this shape.

2. Draw the design of your choice onto the butterfly wings and then colour it in.

3. Cover the centre of your butterfly, (the rectangle you drew around the toilet roll) in loads and loads of glue. Then stick the wings to the back of your toilet roll. Secure the toilet roll at the top and the bottom with a little sellotape.

4. Take your length of string, fold it in half to find the middle. At the middle of the string create and knot a loop.

5. Slip the knot over a door handle and then thread your butterfly onto the end of the string. Take a piece in each hand and then pull gently. Look - your butterfly is flying!

We’ve enjoyed everything we’ve tried, so when we heard that YUZU were branching out with a new bao, beer and gyoza box, we were more than happy to try it out.

Let’s face it, one of the best things about a takeaway is the fact that it requires no more effort than the click of a few buttons and answering the front door. If you can summon up the energy, the joy of the new bao box is that you can get involved in creating your dinner, and you can make an experience of it too. Thankfully you don’t need to be a Gordon Ramsay to knock out a cracking meal from this recipe box: we put on some music, cracked open the Brew York beers included in the box and followed the simple steps set out in the recipe card. Before long we were tucking into freshly steamed bao buns stuffed with vegan meat and with all the YUZU accompaniments, with freshly warmed gyoza on the side. sofa and eat something cooked by someone else, it made a refreshing change to get hands-on and make our own dinner together . This wasn’t just a meal, it was an activity to do together that had nothing to do with work or homeschooling. Bonus.

Food: Little Vikings bake…

CARROT AND COURGETTE TRAYBAKE

This is a cake you can feel pretty good about as it’s packed with fruit and veg. It doesn’t taste too worthy though - it’s moist and delicious, especially when it’s fresh out of the oven. It’s a good one for picnics or packed lunches or an after-school/nursery pick-me-up.

4. Bake for 45 - 50 minutes. It should be risen, golden and smelling delicious. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then cool on a wire rack and cut into squares.

Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180c/160c fan/gas 4 and grease/line a 20cm square brownie tin with greaseproof paper.

2. In a large bowl put all of the fruit, veg and nuts (if using). Stir, then add all the remaining ingredients and fold until well mixed.

3. Once you have a smooth batter, pour it into the tin. If you like, add a handful of oats and dark brown sugar for added texture.
