Here we are with 2019 well underway, and I feel that I may not be alone in saying that I can not believe it is February already! January came and went as quickly as New Year's Eve it would seem, but on the bright side the old saying goes "Time flies when you are having fun." Speaking of fun, I am very happy to share that I have a four legged bundle of fun that has joined my family over the holidays. I adopted a Sato Mix puppy with the help of the wonderful and passionate volunteers and staff at the Monmouth County SPCA. She is a rescue from a notorious beach in Puerto Rico and made her way here to New Jersey. As you may have seen in our publication the adoption page is possible through the MCSPCA, and anyone looking to add a furry family member should absolutely contact them — it was a great experience that I am grateful to have had. I named her Summer and she is excited to be my new coordinator for our adoption page. We have an excellent edition lined up for our amazing Little Silver readers, starting with our cover/feature story on the wonderful Mignoli family! Thank you to the Mignoli family for sharing your story with your neighbors. Our local writers have some great articles for us with Daydreaming Summer Adventures and Fighting the Winter Blues. As well as a new recipe for all the chefs in town to try out in their home kitchens. The BUC Backers Giving Tree is featured along with a story about an exceptional young lady named Brooke who ended up with a 500 pound idea! In the spirit of Valentine's day, we LOVE to be able to share a great article by our incredible Editor Allison Merchant! Also, check out coverage of the 2019 council and emergency service swearing in ceremony. Little Silver Neighbors extends congratulations to all of the new Council Members, Chiefs, and Line Officers on their newly appointed positions! Be sure to look out for an ad asking for any local creative persons whom would like to participate in our upcoming fiction issue. In closing, thank you to our amazing magazine sponsors, we wouldn’t be here without them! I encourage everyone to reach out and share your experience with our publication! Until next time readers, Happy February, Happy Valentines day, we love you Little Silver!

schools and we were more drawn to living in a smaller town.” In 2016 they moved to Kings Road and happy fate led Kristen’s parents, Victor and Olesia Mignoli, to purchase their old house. The appeal of Little Silver enticed both generations. “[It’s] somewhere where you could walk to restaurants, know everyone by name—and that’s just funny because both neighborhoods that we’ve lived in, we’ve gotten to know our neighbors so well,” Kristen said. The two became parishioners at St. George’s by the River in Rumson, encouraged to attend by a previous neighbor. Kristen and Katie are happy to have Sophie Jean grow up in a town full of events and community. “We’re excited now that we’ve had our first child,” Kristen said. “We’re excited to start participating in things like that more [town events]. And Katie and I are both educators so obviously education is really important to us. Thinking forward when we wanted to settle on a town, it was also important to us to know that our children were going to go to a good school district that was progressive and forward thinking, which

we know that the Little Silver school system is really proud of that.” Kristen is currently the Principal of Mill Lake School in Monroe Township. At first, Kristen wasn’t interested in education and was guided by her parents to receive her teaching certificate. “It’s like your parents do always know best in hindsight because once I went into student teaching, I really enjoyed it,” Kristen admitted. She holds her Master’s in Educational Leadership. “Just giving back to kids, no matter their paths, just giving them opportunity with something—that was really a beautiful thing to me. I’m just thankful to do it now even as a principal. Katie always knew she wanted to become a teacher, often playing school as a child. With two Master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Special Education, she is now a Vice Principal and Supervisor of Professional Development in Howell Township. round 400 B.C., the world was introduced to the lost city of Atlantis. Plato’s dialogues of Timaeus and Critias set the creative universe on fire, inspiring future works of Thomas More and Francis Bacon. The sunken island was a city where friendship, virtue, and wisdom were celebrated. It created an image of paradise. Debates on the location— Plato described it submerged in the Atlantic Ocean—and fact versus myth carried on for centuries. A little-known fact is that beyond the northernmost tip of Long Island and east of New England’s beaches, there lies a personal Atlantis for Kristen and Katie Mignoli. It rests near the Atlantic Ocean boundary of New York and Rhode Island. Block Island resides as a special place for the Mignolis. Similar to many New England beaches, there are rocks on the shores of the 4

island. Kristen and Katie journeyed to the southernmost tip where together they created a family tradition with a rock and wished for a baby. September 4, 2018 Sophie Jean was born in Riverview Medical Center. “We’re having so much fun with her,” Katie said. “She’s such a good baby, that we’re actually hesitant to share with people that she’s a good sleeper because you often hear about people not sleeping anymore. But she’s been an absolute angel baby.” Kristen and Katie have been creating their own paradise together in Little Silver. The two met ten years ago as teachers in Keansburg, New Jersey. Kristen was a special education teacher and Katie was a Spanish teacher at the time. “[Our] first summer together was spent apart; Katie spent her summer volunteering in El Salvador, teaching children English while [I] was backpacking through Europe,” Kristen said. Absence definitely made the heart grow fonder

and they soon shared future adventures together. Some of their favorite trips included San Francisco, Vieques, Puerto Rico, Oregon wine country, Savannah, Charleston, France, and Spain. Kristen and Katie enjoyed seeing different places and tasting diverse types of regional cuisine. “It was awesome—I think this sounds cheesy but, having Sophie and living here and starting our family is honestly the best adventure we’ve had so far,” Katie said. “It is really fun to think about it and all the things that are ahead of us.” Kristen and Katie were married on June 14, 2014 at Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, New Jersey, surrounded by friends and family. Their first home in Little Silver was on Monroe Avenue. “Katie and I both grew up in really big towns,” Kristen explained. “Katie was from Middletown and I was in Wayne, which are both huge towns that have two huge high Little Silver Neighbors

For example, some of the habits are being proactive, putting first things first, [and] synergizing—which is working with other people.” Katie and Kristen strive to live by these habits with Sophie. The Mignoli Family is happy to find balance in each day with small journeys to Sickles park and meeting other families in town. “We’re just excited for Sophie to grow up here,” Kristen said. “There’s a lot of different events during the year in town: there is the 5K, there are parades for every holiday, there are different ceremonies, and it’s just an awesome place to raise kids.” The two, avid Gilmore Girls fans, joke that Little Silver is like Monmouth county’s Stars Hollow. Whether it be on an island in the middle of the Atlantic or on a small New Jersey peninsula, The Mignolis treasure their growing family and friends. “We’re really excited that we’re here, we have a baby now, and we’re happy to be here.”

Little Silver Neighbors

We dreamt about a snowy holiday season but were placated by a slightly warm one. January’s wintery winds blew, we heard its call and shivered. I don’t know about you, but by this time of the winter season, I must convince myself to leave the house. No longer satisfied to don gay apparel, I am now dressing in full out mountain woman garb. On these long and blustery nights, I begin dreaming of summer, of all the wonderful possibilities the warmer weather will bring. I begin to plan and dream of sandy beaches and mountains majesty. I wistfully reminisce about traveling through amber waves of grain and fruited plains. I am talking ROAD TRIP. What better time to plan for your summer sojourn then are sequestered to your house and hearth? So, grab your laptops and let’s start planning. I know it is hard to believe but the summer months, with those long weeks of school vacations will roll towards us faster than you think. This is the time to start planning that family vacation you have always meant to take. You know, the one where you reconnect with your children. Introduce them to our incredible country and its national parks. The one where you sit by a campfire or a fireplace in a lodge built during Roosevelts days by the CCC [Civilian Conservation Corps]. For the next few months dream with me as we explore your options. I want to begin our journey at a park that is close enough to drive to, but worlds away from our little village. Shenandoah National Park. Shenandoah is just off Highway 340 in Virginia. This is where it begins, when you make that turn onto Skyline Drive and all your worries fall to the wayside. There are many ways to experience this park. I have driven through on the way to somewhere else and wistfully wished I could stay, and I have camped. The Skyland Lodge is their most luxurious option. The Big Meadow Lodge has preferred rooms with air conditioning for a glamping and rooms which are a bit more rustic. The cabins are a fun alternative, it’s camping without roughing it. For the more adventurous there are four campsites Mathews Arm Campground at mile 22.2, Big Meadows Campground at mile 51, Lewis Mountain Campground at mile 57.2, and Loft Mountain Campground at mile 79.5. These can accommodate RVs, trailers or my favorite tents. Book ahead for all accommodations, it does fill up quickly but never feels crowded. February 2019

Hiking is one of the main reasons to come to the park. There are about 35 trails spanning 500 miles cut through and maintained to some degree. While there are plenty self-guided paths to saunter, the park also offers guided tours at minimal cost. Extra shoes are always a must as the park is know for its waterfalls and you would not want to miss them. Hikes range from milers to the BIG ONE, the AT. There is easy access to 105 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Maps and information for this park and its trails will leave your head spinning. A quick trip to the visitor’s center is always a great idea, especially if you are staying a few days. The park has something for everyone. There are plenty of festivals and events to peek your interest, from night sky viewing, culinary arts exploration, to apple butter and hard cider testing. You can try your hand at rock climbing and repelling or horseback riding. The summer months bring music and dancing under the stars. Well, I hope I set the fire burning and you start your research. The is no shortage of information or downloadable trail maps. This is an easy park to explore, close to home, well maintained and traveled but with enough mystery to keep it interesting. A quick word about National Park Rangers: They are expert educators of National Parks, always ask them questions. They live and breathe their particular park. While cross-countrying with my traveling family we were introduced to so many backwater roads, (once literally a road that we did not notice on the map that went along the Colorado river. The girls had made rubber bands bracelets, which they gave to the rangers who repaid them with information about this road, which ran through a ghost town and ended at the foot of Arches National Park.) off the beaten path swimming holes and stories from years of living on the land. These men and women are the backbone; they keep the parks safe and accessible.  Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from our April 2018 issue Family Feature! Jill Livingston-Arnold

Since October, we have been introduced to a new furry friend each month, found in our Pet Corner. These animals featured in the magazine are presented to us by Jill Livingston-Arnold, MCSPCA Dog Adoptions and Foster Program Manager. In between directing the LoveaFoster adoption program and caring for each dog she encounters, Livingston-Arnold has taken the time to share more about LoveaFoster with Little Silver Neighbors. LSN: What are some of the benefits from fostering animals? JLA: When fostering an animal, you not only help the dog you are fostering but you are making space for another animal to enter our facility. In turn, you are helping two dogs, two lives saved. LSN: Please tell me about the original idea of this program and how it began. JLA: I saw a need to alleviate financial pressure from the shelter [MCSPCA] in regard to

medical and behavioral needs for our foster dogs. Our program was revamped three years ago and took off. Last summer we had 40 dogs in foster care: moms and nursing puppies and adults. Through fundraising we are available to pay for top notch medical care and pay credited trainers who make home visits to our adult dogs who need certain behaviors worked on. LSN: What is an important mindset to have when operating this kind of program? JLA: I always remind myself that we are bridge between what was and what could be. We give it 110% everyday, this year alone we have saved more than 108 lives. I owe it all to my amazing foster families who believe in this cause and never stop fighting for the voiceless. LSN: As Founder/Director, could you walk me through the day to day process of running this organization? JLA: We work 24/7 here. There are always dogs in need entering our shelter. A surrender, a

Rolling Over with Love-a-Foster stray, or a cruelty case comes into our building daily. We are constantly checking emails for new fosters, performing home checks, and matching up families to an appropriate dog for them. Following up and providing guidance by our head trainer is critical to our behavioral fosters. We are a team. LSN: When it began did you ever think it would grow to what it has today? JLA: Never. I am very lucky to have an amazing organization who always supports me. When our Howell hoarding case* broke two years ago, the MCSPCA rescued 276 animals from one home. In three days, we fostered out 38 dogs, all who are living wonderful lives. My girlfriends and family are my cheerleaders, always front and center, ready to help with fundraising and listen to my endless dog stories. LSN: What changes and new endeavors are in the works for the program? JLA: I would love to be able to pull from shelters around the country and provide transport

to our top-notch facility. I would love to give dogs around the country the second chance they deserve. LSN: What are your hopes for not only the continuance of this organization but its legacy? JLA: I hope that in the future people realize how important fostering is. It is truly life-saving and gives an animal a second chance at life. So many dogs are euthanized everyday across the country for no reason except that there is lack of space in shelters for them. I hope every day that this will change, and people will realize how important adoption and fostering is.  In 2018, 108 dogs were fostered through the Love-a-Foster Program. For more information about Love-a-Foster or how to foster a dog, visit http://loveafoster.org. *The Howell hoarding case reflects the rescue in 2016 of 276 dogs living in cruel conditions in the home of Charlene and Joseph Handrik in Howell Township, NJ. The couple was charged with 276 counts of animal cruelty by providing inhumane living conditions and 276 counts for failing to provide their dogs with proper veterinary care. More information about the case can be found on https:// monmouthcountyspca.org/ and https://www.app.com/

hough the holidays feel like a distant dream, their lasting impressions help warm our hearts through these cold winter months. Since its inception in 2012 as a result to the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, the Giving Tree project has been addressing the needs of the most vulnerable of the community during the holidays. RBR SOURCE, the School-Based Youth Services Program, combines its strengths with the RBR BUC Backer Foundation to give 34 RBR families more than 125 gifts through donations of the greater Red Bank Regional Community. “Not everyone has the means to afford the gift giving that occurs around the holiday season,” said Suzanne Keller, RBR SOURCE director. “Our staff identifies the needs of our students and their families and provides a list to the BUC Backer Foundation who advertises it to their members.” Gift donations are then organized by the BUC Backer members who signed up from the list. They then purchase and wrap the gifts to be given out at school or delivered to the students’ homes by the SOURCE staff. Everyone’s identity remains anonymous to the donor. Each year the Giving Tree project displays the wonderful community of RBR. Constant strides are made by students, staff, and volunteers to embody the Buccaneer pride.

Cracking the Code

B y M a r y C h amb e r l a i n

On December 8 from 9:08-10:03am, Point Road School participated in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is an attempt to teach people the basics of computer programming in 60 minutes in a fun, simple way. It is part of a campaign that Code.org, a non-profit organization, launched in the U.S. with the goal of introducing coding into the U.S. curriculum and raising awareness around what coding is. The idea was to show that it's not just about the geek in the basement or the super-tech-savvy person, but that it actually plays a role in everything we do and everybody should have access to it. Point Road had the whole school participating at the same time. All classes had

to complete an “unplugged” activity, where students were walked through a lesson that did NOT use the computer. Then students logged on to their Chromebook and started coding! All students had already experienced coding in their STEM class, so teachers did not need to worry if they were coding novices! STEM teacher Wendy Whittle prepared lesson plans and supporting materials for all grades including activity sheets and hard copy materials. Everyone had a great time working together and helping each other. The students had fun helping some of their teachers learn how to code!

An Idea That Weighed 500 Pounds By Allison Merchant

uring that stressful time between Thanksgiving and New Year, it is easy to become hyper-focused on finding the perfect gift. Yet it is hard to define the precise perfection in a gift: the width of a smile, the exact item requested, the level of necessity? Sometimes the best gift is the act of giving without seeing or even knowing the person receiving it. This is something that eighth grader Brooke discovered this past December. Brooke and her friend used their class assignment to put forth in the community goodwill and help those in need, especially during the holiday season. Brooke chose to organize a food drive and donate to Lunch Break in Red Bank while her friend collected clothing items for the Red Cross.

“We both were interested in this topic,” Brooke explained about helping the less fortunate in the community. “I donated to Lunch Break because I was thinking of problems in our community and one is that some people can’t afford food. So, I wanted to donate that, and Lunch Break was local.” Beginning November 26, Brooke would collect the boxes each day to sort the food and items. “There was a bigger turnout than I expected because every single day we would have to go down to the cafeteria and empty the boxes,” she said. “It was fun because we got to see how much our community really cares about everything.” The drive began after she met with the school principal. “He gave us suggestions on when it would be best to start and promote it,” she said. “To spread the word, we had flyers that we gave to each homeroom. Every

morning on the announcements it would be said as a reminder. Also, an email went out to all the teachers and parents.” The turnout was truly tremendous, resulting in 500 pounds of food items donated to Lunch Break on December 17. Brooke and her mother personally delivered the donations. “It seemed as though everyone in our school participated in it. Each grade had their own assignment of what to bring in and there was a variety of all the different foods,” Brooke said. “It showed me how much our community can do. And that it is something we should always do.” She shared her interest in participating and promoting again with this cause in the future. “If we always did that [participate,] then there would be so much food that could be donated. It felt good to donate the food and orchestrate the project.”

D

uring that stressful time between Thanksgiving and New Year, it is easy to become hyper-focused on finding the perfect gift.

By Allison Merchant 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Little Silver Tennis Club. It has been a staple in the tennis community with its various programs and adult leagues. This month it will also become the new home for Monmouth University’s Men’s Tennis Team. “Traditionally the theme for the last number of years, since I’ve been with the school, which is eight years, we’ve had a little bit of a disadvantage,” said Michael Schwartz, Monmouth University’s Men’s Tennis Team Assistant Coach. “We’ve never had a home court or an indoor home court.” The season begins in February and for the first few months, New Jersey weather drives most matches indoors. Therefore, the team used to spend the beginning of their seasons travelling more than most teams. Schwartz, a resident of Little Silver, approached the Little Silver Tennis Club and was able to finally get a home for the Hawks.

“They [Little Silver Tennis Club] have some additional courts on their facility and they had a little more flexibility to work with us,” Schwartz said. “We were able to work out an agreement that was workable for Little Silver and it was workable for us. Now we’ve added five indoor matches and those are five matches we would’ve been on the road in previous years. We now have a home.” Monmouth University is a Division 1 school and the Men’s Tennis team have played in the NCAA Competition three years in a row. The NCAA competition consists of the top 64 teams in the country. “It’s just an honor to be in that top 64, that is just an experience in itself,” Schwartz admitted. “Because you’re playing at the highest level, you’re getting a lot of press, a lot of coverage, and you’re getting a lot of people coming out and seeing you play.” Schwartz hopes that the team playing at Little Silver Tennis Club will bring positive influence for the players and the community alike. “We’re hoping that our wins will really

shine on and bring some attention to the Little Silver Tennis facility and to Monmouth University, and that the community will embrace us,” he said. “We love the community, we would love for the community to love us, and we’d love to have a positive influence on the kids, where they see what the level of Division 1 Tennis is and they can hopefully strive towards.” Schwartz continued to explain his desire for the team to create an open dialogue with the community. Looking forward he is hoping to have the team involved with community outreach during their off-season. “The bottom line is that this area here is tennis country,” Schwartz said. “That’s why we’re hoping to, now by [playing in] Little Silver, have the Monmouth County community embrace the tennis team as a nationally ranked team. We’re hoping to get that love that goes with local teams.” The first home match for the Monmouth University Hawks will be Sunday February 3, at 4pm against Wagner College.

Happy 2019 to all! I have been asked many times what a keratin treatment is and what it does for the hair. Keratin is a smoothing, frizz-reducing treatment. It does not permanently straighten hair but seals the hair cuticle with a coating of protein and produces shine. We all have keratin proteins in our hair. Over time, our hair tends to change in texture making it unruly with frizz and as we age, we lose some of these proteins. A treatment will temporarily put the keratin back into the hair, giving an increase in shine, reduced frizz, and an overall easier at home styling process. A keratin treatment should last 3-4 months depending on how often you wash it and using the proper after care. Always be sure to use the correct sulfate-free shampoo to get longevity out of your keratin. New to our salon is Botox Smoothing treatment. Different from a keratin, the Botox treatment is a deep conditioner with natural ingredients. It helps restore dry, damaged hair and eliminate frizz. Hair Botox can last up to three months with the proper after care. Give us a call to transform your hair based on a recommendation from one of our stylists!

ou learn with words: You love reading and Y remember things you’ve read. Writing things down makes them stick in your mind.

Identifying your learning style will help you determine what kinds of study tactics work best for you.

3. Schedule Your Studying: Rather than flying by the seat of your pants, use what you know about your upcoming test to plan as far in advance as possible. What material is going to be covered? How much time do you have? Block out time to review specific topics so you don’t miss anything.

5 Tips for Effective Studying By Madison Farkas No matter how old you are, whether you’re preparing for an elementary school quiz or your college final exam, there are some study strategies that will help everyone learn. 1.

reate a Dedicated Workspace: Set aside a desk or a table C in a quiet room, ideally one that has a door, and use it only for studying and homework (kitchen tables aren’t the best). This will help you focus, as your brain will get in the habit of recognizing that when you sit in this place, it is time to study. It will be easier for you to tune out distractions like TV, video games, chores, siblings and noise.

4. Challenge Yourself: When studying, it’s easy to get into the habit of only focusing on the information you know

well. It’s comforting, and it boosts your confidence, but when it comes to preparing for that big test, there’s no point in sticking to what you’ve already learned. Instead, spend your time on topics or concepts that you find difficult. 5. G ive Yourself a Concrete End Point: Unlike a project or assignment, it’s tough to know when you’re finished studying until you’re sitting down to take the test. You’ll be happy to hear that yes, it is possible to study too much! You might study until a certain time, until you’ve reviewed every concept, or until you can answer all the questions on a prep quiz, but after a certain point, you either know the information or you don’t, and a getting a good night’s sleep before the test will be more helpful than staying up all night to cram.

2. Figure Out Your Learning Style: There are many different ways people can learn best, but these are the basic ones. Different strategies will help different types of learners absorb and remember information. •

Food for Thought

ere we are in freezing February! I myself am not a fan of the cold and get cranky when my shoulders meet my ears and that chill runs down my spine, whereas my husband loves the cold and brisk winter air. If you are more like me and just want to be warm or if you suffer from a mild to full-blown case of the winter blues (seasonal affective disorder), there are natural ways to help feel happier and warmer! 1. Get and stay warm! Wear a hat, scarf, and warm socks and shoes. We lose the most heat from our bodies from our heads and feet. The back of your head and neck too! Keep them covered! Sitting by a fire or drinking warm fluids is very helpful too. 2. Take vitamin D, it helps boost your immune system and balance mood. Many scientific studies now show the benefits of vitamin D in fighting cancer. The recommended amount is 600 IU but studies show the benefit of upwards to 5000 IU. 3. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Brisk walks outside midday during the warmest times are tremendously beneficial for health and mood. Dress warm and move! 4. Omega-3 fatty acids are a must as a supplement but even better from your foods like wild Atlantic salmon. 5. Potassium and magnesium from bananas, spinach, and whole grains will help with quality restful sleep and energy during the day.

Blackened Salmon with Mashed Blue Potatoes and Sautéed Kale with Walnuts

6. Purposely focus on the good people and happenings around you and steer away from gossip, negative chatter and activities. Watch the sunrise or set, squirrels running about, the warmth of your home, good food on your table. The simple everyday good stuff we take for granted, see it, and appreciate it.

B y T amm i F e e Carlson, Shared by the Seasoned Mom

7. Laugh, watch funny movies, do kooky things with your kids, whatever works for you. It also burns extra calories and works your core when you get in a good laugh session.

Spice up your next healthy seafood dinner with this easy 5-Minute, 5-Ingredient blackened salmon! It’s a classic Southern favorite that’s crispy on the outside,

8. Eat healthy hydrating soups and stews with lean proteins and good winter vegetables like onions, beets, carrots, kale, and potatoes. Nourishing foods that have great warming spices like cloves, turmeric, cinnamon, garlic, and cumin are terrific this time of year. Spicy foods help raise your metabolism and body temperature. Just don't go too spicy that you give yourself heartburn! Cayenne and mustard seed are wonderful to add to dishes along with garlic, turmeric, saffron, and paprika too. Smile on purpose and do kind things just because you can. Putting a smile on your face even when you’re mad as hell changes your disposition. Try it! It puts you in a good mood naturally as does just being kind to others. Call it karma: you get back what you put forth! Happy Valentine's Day and stay warm!  Tammi is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from our November 2018 issue Family Feature!
