Welcome to the May edition of Little Silver Neighbors! I would like to take a moment and acknowledge my amazing Team: Allison, Jackie, ToniAnn and our photographers Avery and Erica. A round of applause for these amazing professionals, it is a privilege to know them. This publisher wants to start by expressing gratitude, to extend a huge Tsunami of appreciation and adulation for our business sponsors. I would like to dedicate this issue to our business sponsors for making this issue possible, even in a pandemic the businesses you will see in the ads want to let you know they are here now, and will be after we overcome the obstacles ahead. In this issue, we are proud to feature the Gaver Family. Thank you Gavers for your help supplying the cover and feature article photos to share your story with the community. We are excited to have your family be our May feature residents! Our Expert Contributors from Riverview Medical and Brown’s HVAC have some great topics this month for your reading! Keep an eye out for a submission from Tower Hill, and an article on the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County! Also, we have a new column by our very own ToniAnn Romeo for the music lovers in town. It is my most sincere hope that this issue of the magazine brings a smile or sense of solace to our readers as we brave the trying times at hand. We are in uncertain times, and I would like to cut my letter short this month. To end with a quote by someone who you may recognize and if not, it could be a great time to meet Fred Rogers, creator of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ Until next time Neighbors!!

“Savannah kind of wanted a break off from her sister a little bit. She always asked to start horseback riding, so we decided that she could start that fall and that’s really become one of her favorite activities at this point, riding horse. e are facing an unconventional time where being trapped in a confined space with your immediate family seems forced and not always ideal. Yet three years ago, the Gaver family took a unique opportunity and embraced a similar situation as an adventure, only their space was a sailboat. “We took a year off and sailed down the US Intracoastal Waterway, across to the Bahamas, and then back as far north as Nantucket,” said Becky Gaver. “The experience taught us the value of working together as a family, whether embarking on a homeschooling curriculum for the first time, or long offshore passages that required everyone’s help.” In 2017 the Gavers didn’t just stay on the water and when they weren’t navigating the seas, they were exploring new places and meeting new people. “It also taught us the value of personal relationships,” Becky added. “The boat was the vehicle to meet more and more interesting people doing interesting things with their time on this earth. If there is a motto we live by, it is to invest in filling our lives with experiences and relationships.” “The adventure itself tested us in so many ways,” said Chris Gaver. “Simply put, a once in a lifetime experience that opened our eyes to opportunities to continue to create once in a lifetime experiences. The opportunity, for nine months, to be less than 43 feet away from your spouse and two daughters is an experience that I’ll never forget. We only have our kids living with us for a brief time, so having that opportunity to wake up every day and know we were going to spend the day together learning or experiencing something new was amazing.” The family, Becky, Chris, Natalie, and Savannah, started in Annapolis, MD in November and sailed down the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida. They spent Christmas in Florida that year. During the entire adventure Natalie and Savannah were homeschooled. “It was an experience that not everyone gets to have,” Becky said. “They really embraced it. There was none of those kinds of growing pains where someone wanted to go home or didn’t like what we were doing. The transition was really quite easy.” 6

Run and Becky has volunteered as a coach for three seasons. “It’s such a great program for girls to just come into their own and are just learning how to build relationships with other people in their classes and their c o m m u n i t y,” Becky said. “Give them the tools and they'll be able to not only embrace themselves, but also allow them to use those tools to make the right kind of friendships and relationships and give them some kind of power to see where their importance should lie.” She is also a co-leader of Savannah’s Daisy Troop in Little Silver. The troop started last year with kindergarten and first grade. Becky joined the troop this past year as a leader when one of the leaders moved out west. “That’s been very fulfilling, it allows me now to spend some time with Savannah and get to

know her friends at the same level I did for Natalie with Girls on the Run.” The Gavers shared that the best part about living in Little Silver is the community. “From the neighbors that support each other, to the parents that look out for each other’s children, to the

We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty for sponsoring this month’s feature story. “From a family perspective, I underestimated the resilience of children,” Chris added. “We try not to coddle too much as parents, but our daughters were trick or treating on October 31 and on November 1, they were in a car driving to Annapolis to move on the boat. By November 2, they had their room all set, and they were having a blast – while Becky and I were still sharing looks, ‘do you believe we’re doing this?’ Similarly, while maybe not on day two like the kids, our family was incredibly resilient to the challenges we faced. It’s that constant challenge that we successfully faced each day— honestly, because we had to—provided a confidence for us to take bigger risks to experience much more than we would have without the trip.” The Gavers have been a sailing family since Becky and Chris met in 2001, racing sailboats in Keyport, NJ. The next three years, the pair traveled up and down the East coast racing sailboats together before getting married in 2004 in Long Beach Island. Shortly before their wedding, they moved to Little Silver. “From a sailing perspective, navigating the shallow Intracoastal Waterway tested both Becky’s and my years of sailing experience to make it down ‘the ditch’ without grounding,” Chris said. “Also, preparing the kids for a safe multi-day offshore passage from the Bahamas to Charleston was something that was new for us.” Both Natalie and Savannah have been exposed to sailing before they were a year old. Natalie started sailing early at only five months old when Becky and Chris brought her down to the British Virgin Islands on their annual winter sailing vacation, she caught the bug and she now sails competitively in her own sailboat. Savannah enjoys the water as well, but most recently she has started taking horseback riding lessons and loves her time spent at the barn. “I think it gives you a lot of independence,” Becky said. “I mean, teaching Natalie how to sail, who’s only 10 at this point, but she’s able to independently bring her little sailboat from point A to point B and just have the ability to do that. I think you gain a lot of confidence, self-reliance. You don’t have to rely on anyone else to do it.” Little Silver Neighbors

sense of purpose. One: be safe, two: maximize the experience, three: have fun. When we got home, that clarity of purpose quickly evaporated. There was no ‘ah ha’ moment about how things would change. It was very clear to us that everyday we wake up and we’d make very different micro-decisions that we don’t pay attention to. Those decisions will bring us to a very different place many years from now, than where we’d be without that experience.” “It just opened our eyes even further to seeing that. Not to be judgmental, on how people live,” Becky added. “I think people should have the right to be happy and if doing what they want to do to make them happy without infringing or hurting anyone else, let them be. You know, just stop the judgments, and go out with an open mind. That’s really what we’re trying to allow the kids to see and just live to be happy as long as you know you’re not hurting anyone, and you’re making a living, then you’re good.”

volunteers that donate their time in helping all the programs run smoothly. We wouldn’t think about living anywhere else.” The connection of the community helped guide their decisions to take that sailboat trip in 2017. Though Chris’s father checked in regularly on their home while away, the Gavers knew their neighbors were also keeping watch. It made the idea an easy decision being in such a small community knowing that they could count on the people around them. The Gavers’ adventures as a family brought them closer together. Becky explained their reasoning for taking that spontaneous trip was the understanding that there’s no guarantee in life and the plans that you make today, that you’re going to be able to see them through in 20 years or whatever the time may be. “In the end, living aboard a boat is similar to living in a house,” Chris said. “There are high’s and low’s. The one difference, however, is a crystal clear

sense of purpose.

R22 Refrigerant Phase Out:

Are You Ready?

By B r o w n’s H e at i n g , C o o l i n g a n d P lu m b i n g

DO YOU HAVE AN OLDER AIR CONDITIONER?

<cuadrado> For this summer, you can still obtain recycled R22 for existing air conditioning systems that use this certain refrigerant, but it is three times more expensive than the current use of a more environmentally-friendly R-410A, which is now used in air conditioning.

For almost a decade now, we’ve heard about this looming R22 refrigerant phase out. Summer is going to be here before you know it, so Brown’s Heating, Cooling and Plumbing wants to keep you informed of all your options. Stay tuned for great savings for our neighbors.

<cuadrado> Due to the decreasing supply, the cost of R22 is rising. And as we all move further into 2020, accessibility will become more costly and difficult.

Listen up! The R22 refrigerant phase out is happening soon. As in, this year. R-22, FREON, R410A—all refer to the refrigerant gas that is the cooling factor for your A/C. Information is better than hype, so here are some facts.

R22 Refrigerant Phase Out Recap If you had your air conditioning system installed before 2010, it likely uses R22 refrigerant. This is what is used to create cool and comfy air coming from your air conditioner. However, in recent years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began phasing out R22 refrigerant due to the compounding depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. The whole process started about 25 years ago when the EPA ordered this phase-out of R-22 as part of the international treaty on protecting the ozone layer. Referred to as the “Montreal Protocol,” this began because of the effects of refrigerant ozonedepleting substances. Then, back in 2010, the production and import of R22 was limited. Again, it’s still stocked, but for how long? We do not know.

What Homeowners Need to Know The R22 refrigerant phase out can all be confusing. Here are the top three things you need to know: <cuadrado> R22 refrigerant is no longer manufactured in North America. 10

So, if your air conditioner was manufactured after January 2010, the R22 refrigerant phase-out probably won’t apply to you. If you’re not sure when it was manufactured, look up your unit online to find out the details on your model. However, if your air conditioner was produced before January 2010, you have a couple options.

1. Invest in a new air conditioner. An upgraded

unit will be more environmentally-friendly, efficient, and will also use the approved R-410A A/C refrigerant. Our advice? Do it now (yes, before summer even) before the rush hits and manufacturers end up increasing the costs on air conditioning systems due to demands. Above all, don’t panic over all this. The great news is the State of NJ offer rebates on highly efficient A/C and when you pair it with a new heating system, New Jersey Natural Gas is offering Savegreen rebates on new furnaces and boilers. There is a lot of help out there and with our financing packages, it is something a family can make payments on for a number of years.

Monmouth Beach charity SHORE TO HELP donated 15,000 dollars to the Mental Health Association of Monmouth (MHAMC) in support of promoting mental health as a strong component of overall wellness. The donation ensured the continuation of the MHAMC intervention, prevention, and their education efforts in Monmouth County. The MHAMC celebrated 70 years of providing a prevention focused support network for those in need of mental health services. The organization is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization. It is dedicated to helping all people live a healthy mental life. This includes prevention services for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, and integrated care, services, and support for those who need it, with recovery being the main goal. The organization was established in 1909 from a former psychiatric patient Clifford W. Beers. Beers set the organization into motion after experiencing traumatic abuse in public and private institutions. The act was considered revolutionary and attracted prominent national leaders, including philosopher William James and the Rockefeller family. Their mission is accomplished through their strength-based programs, education, advocacy, community partnerships, and attention to local, state, and national public policy. many when suffering from mental health. The transition from a caterpillar to butterfly symbolizes the journey taken to better mental health. SHORE TO HELP is a local charity and works to raise funds for local charities and families in need. The charity started up in November of 2007 as a small number of community members who organized a Thanksgiving Day football game. The founding members are Pat Van Wagner, Doug Wells, John Ferone, and Mark Gardner. The charity has nearly 300 participants and has raised more than 250,000 dollars for local charities. The intent for the organization is to bring relief for underserved communities. SHORE TO HELP has proudly donated to 13 charities and local families, including Fulfill Monmouth and Ocean Counties formerly known as The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Family and Children’s Services, and victims of Superstorm Sandy. Kenneth Shaw, Jr., board president, and the board of trustees presented a check to MHAMC Foundation board trustee, Patricia Holsey. The check was presented at Shaw Construction in Monmouth Beach, NJ. “We are grateful to SHORE TO HELP and its board of trustees for believing in our mission,” MHAMC CEO, Wendy DePedro said. “This generous contribution comes at a critical time amidst the COVID-19, pandemic when our families and neighbors face fear, isolation, and anxiety. Such support emphasizes the mental health services are needed now more than ever.” In 2019, MHAMC served more than 6,700 children and families in Monmouth County. The services included more than 1,000 crisis interventions to youth at risk, and no-cost suicide prevention training in 163 schools. “SHORE TO HELP strongly believes in the work of MHAMC, and we want to support the mental health and wellness of children and families in our community,” said Joe Wladyka, board member. Mental Health of America has stated that nearly one in five American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year. There are many mental health disorders, and many go undiagnosed. If you or a loved one is struggling and in need of help, please consider reaching out to these local charities for help.

I Think I Have

Coronavirus Now What?

B y H a c k e n s a c k M e r i d i a n H e a lt h , R i v e rv i e w M e d i c a l C e n t e r IF YOU THINK YOU’VE BEEN EXPOSED to the new coronavirus COVID-19 or are developing symptoms associated with COVID-19, follow these steps to help protect yourself and others from getting sick.

Call your doctor if: » You’ve been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 » You exhibit known symptoms of COVID-19 • Fever, cough, difficulty breathing (Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure) » You’ve recently traveled to an area that has widespread cases of COVID-19 It is important to call ahead before going to a doctor’s office to reduce unnecessary exposure to germs for yourself and others. Telemedicine could be a helpful option to reduce exposure. Try it at ConvenientCareNow.com (https:// convenientcarenow.com/landing.htm).

If your health care provider suspects you have a mild case of COVID-19, isolate at home. Here’s how: » Restrict activities outside of your house, except for getting medical care as instructed by a health care professional. Don’t go to work, school or public places. » Avoid public transportation, such as buses, taxis or other ride-sharing options.

» Separate yourself from others at home. If possible, stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom. » Don’t handle pets or other animals while sick. » Wear a face-mask if you must be near other people (such as in a car or sharing a room).

We can’t stress enough how important it is to call before seeking care so the facility can properly prepare for potential exposure to COVID-19. You should continue to self-monitor for 14 days after exposure to the virus.

» Always cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Throw the used tissue out in a lined trash can immediately and wash hands with soap and water.

Help protect others in your household from getting COVID-19

» Wash hands often and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. » Avoid sharing household items, such as dishes, cups and towels. Wash commonly used items often and thoroughly. » Clean “high-touch” surfaces every day, such as counters, doorknobs, phones, keyboards and toilets with a household cleaning spray or wipe. The decision to discontinue home isolation should be made in consultation with your health care provider and state and local health departments.

Monitor your symptoms Take your temperature and check for symptoms daily. If your illness worsens, contact your doctor or HackensackMeridianHealth.org/CareNow (https://www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/services/convenient-care/).

When someone is on home isolation, it’s normal for others in the household to feel heightened anxiety around contracting COVID-19. Follow these steps, in addition to those previously mentioned, to reduce the risk of spreading germs: » While using a separate bathroom, if available, also use a separate bedroom. » Restrict visitors who don’t have an essential reason for being in the home. » Take the lead on caring for any pets. » Make sure there’s good air flow in the home. Use the air conditioner or open windows if weather permits. » Wear a disposable face-mask and gloves if you have to come in contact with the patient, especially their blood, stool, saliva, mucus, vomit or urine. Throw away after using. Learn more about COVID-19 here: HackensackMeridianHealth.org/ COVID19 (https://www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/COVID19/).

VIDEO VISIT TO REDUCE COVID-19 EXPOSURE. Now $20 for New Jersey residents with code HMH20. FREE for Adults 65 and older with code HMHFREE.

If you suspect you’ve been exposed to coronavirus, or are experiencing only mild flu-like symptoms, the CDC recommends screening through telehealth video visits. You can have a video visit with a board-certified physician who can advise on whether COVID-19 testing at an urgent care or other facility is necessary. Visit ConvenientCareNOW.com.

Due to heavy volume, wait times are longer than usual.

$20 virtual visit costs will be reimbursed for any patient who is screened by Convenient Care NOW and then tests positive at an Hackensack Meridian care facility.

Navigate Wellness Counseling Transitions to Telehealth

Submitted by the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County

IN THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC SAFETY, AND IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County’s (MHAMC) outpatient program, Navigate Wellness Counseling, transitioned all in-person counseling sessions to telehealth. Using a secure, real-time audio/video communications platform, clinicians can remotely perform mental health evaluations, assessments, consultations, treatment planning, and therapy. “It’s critical to think about mental health as part of the overall public health response to COVID-19,” said Nancy Tighe, Navigate Wellness Counseling Director. “As we adhere to the federal guidelines of social distancing and sheltering at home, we may become susceptible to the negative effects of isolation, including loneliness, depression, sleep disturbance, anger, and poor cognitive functioning.” The temporary measure addresses the importance of limiting in-person interaction while maintaining the program’s need to provide

counseling in a safe, comfortable, and secure setting. Of the transition, MHAMC CEO, Wendy DePedro said, “Telehealth allows us to provide continued support to our clients currently in treatment who may be experiencing an exacerbation in symptoms such as fear and anxiety and engage those with new mental health concerns resulting from the pandemic.” The federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) defines telehealth as “the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health, and health administration.” To schedule an appointment with Navigate Wellness Counseling, call (732) 542-6422. The MHAMC is an affiliate of Mental Health America and the Mental Health Association in New Jersey. The MHAMC is dedicated to promoting mental health as a critical component of overall wellness, including prevention services for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, integrated care and treatment for those who need it, with recovery as the goal. Our mission is accomplished through strengthbased programs, education, advocacy, community partnerships, and the shaping of public policy.

Future’s so bright, we’re wearing shades.

Punk for Pop: When the Boybands Made a Comeback

B y To n i A n n R o m e o

HELLO READERS! In this article I am going to talk to you about one of the greatest joys in life and that is music! Music is stitched together by sweet symphonies, melodies, lyrics, vocals, and most importantly, passion. There is a song for every mood, and I believe music should be listened to every single day. I genuinely cannot go a day without listening to music. Whether I’m getting ready for the day, working on pieces for this fabulous magazine, taking a shower (a full-on concert goes on in there with the right song, you would not believe the “talent” I possess), or even right before I go to bed. Music has to be played in order for the day to be complete. For as long as I can remember, music has always been something I’ve enjoyed. When I was younger, my parents had a stereo in the living room, and we would blast music so loud and dance around the house. We would hear classics like Elvis Presley, Sade, Patrick Hernandez, Divine, and so many others. I was introduced to so many different genres and artist growing up, which is why my playlist ranges from pop, rock, disco, Disney classics, country, alternative 90s, Italian music, and so many others. I even used to be in chorus when I was in middle school. I landed a solo and got to sing Mariah Carey’s song Hero at my eighth-grade graduation. Looking back, probably not my best work, and I should stick to listening and not singing. Nonetheless, even singing along good or bad will put you in a good mood and I definitely channeled the inner singer in me that day. Growing up in the 2000s, my all-time favorites were Green Day and Avril Lavigne. I would listen to their CDs for hours on end. My mom bought me the American Idiot album by Green Day and was mortified because of all the cursing that was in their songs. She apologized because she couldn’t find the PG version, but I was just thrilled to even listen to their music regardless of the cursing. I basically thought I was a pop punk princess, bouncing around my room and mumbling the curse words like a little rebel. It showed me another side of music that I still love to this day. As I’ve grown up my taste in music has only grown with me and become much wider. I went from being obsessed with pop punk music to then being obsessed with the Jonas Brothers, and then eventually One direction. A very big shift from Green Day, but clearly boy bands were my thing. These artists have plastered the walls of my room for years. Concerts bring a whole new meaning of appreciation for the music you love. I have definitely been to my fair share of concerts. Let’s see, 22

Little Silver Neighbors

May 2020

the Jonas Brothers three times, Katy Perry on her California Dreams Tour, the incredibly talented Demi Lovato twice, once was alongside Nick Jonas. I’ve seen One Direction a whopping eight times and I am still heartbroken that they have broken up. I’ve seen the Chainsmokers during a school trip in college and it was absolutely mind blowing. Last, but certainly not least I have seen my biggest celebrity crush, the almighty Harry Styles on his solo tour. I plan to see him again on his second world tour in July 2020. These are just a few artists I listen to. Concerts have the power to bring so many people together and make them feel like home. It is one of the best parts about being a music junkie, having the opportunity to experience it live. It is amazing how everyone gathers together to celebrate and enjoy what an artist has put out in the music universe. Concerts are a super fun way to bond with others, make friends, appreciate the band behind the music, actually being able to hear the voice of your favorite artist live, and really hear their passion. I have cried countless times at a concert because I just felt the artist and their song deep in my soul. It is so moving to really hear it, truly feel the energy of the crowd alongside you. My concert days have not stopped there, and I plan on going to so many more. I think a country concert is next on my list. I just really love music and the power and feeling it gives, the connection to lyrics, the way music can move your mood, and uplift your spirits. Feeling the rhythm, the bass hitting you in your core, making it impossible to stand still. Everyone has their favorite genre, their favorite artist. Even if your friend, family, or whomever doesn’t like the artist, the personal connection you build with an artist, following their journey, is indescribable and unbeatable. To the great residents of Little Silver, go put on your favorite song, dance along, shout the lyrics, share the music with your friends (who knows, you might switch somebody on to loving your artist or a particular song). Make sure to support your favorite artist, especially local artists. There is actually a band called Little Silver, check them out and see how you like them. It has been great sharing and introducing my love of music and where my love for it all started with all of you. I can’t wait to continue sharing the great love I have for music. Music is solid and concrete and will always be around and there is always something to love about it. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay liberated, and stay Tuned for my next article!

She gets to sleep comfortably tonight while I sleep on a bed that has been infested by other people doing God knows what on it. The man at the desk takes around five minutes despite my grunting before setting down his magazine and asking me what I want. “I’d like a room for the night, please?” “For one?” “Yes.” “Alright,” he sighs before picking up a key. “That’ll be forty dollars.” I nod before reaching into my wallet, almost sad to open it. The picture of Olivia and how I’m not seeing her tonight stares at me. I lay my money on the desk when I’m done sulking and the man trades the key with me. “Your room will be on the left,” he says before sitting back down and continuing to his magazine. I’m honestly surprised I didn’t check Yelp before I came here. I’m sure all the ratings are one-stars. Walking to my room, I see a large man in my view, probably mid-forties, with a large grin and waving to me. I give a half-smile and continue walking, hoping he doesn’t follow. “Are you Patrick Egan?” he asks before I can walk past him. I nod. “That’s me.” “I am a huge fan!” “That’s great,” I nod again. “Thanks.” “Hold on,” he freezes before running into his room. I look at the number on his door, 104, then at mine, 103. He comes out a second later with a copy of my recent novel, in his hands. “I am loving this so far.” “Thank you.” “Could you, perhaps, maybe…” “Of course,” I finally feign a more enthusiastic smile so I don’t come across as mean. Any other day, I probably would have loved to do this, but today not so much. I reach into my pocket and pull out my pen. “Name?” I ask. He gives it to me. “Okay…” I sign before handing the book back to him. “Happy reading.” “Thank you so much!” he grips it immediately before clinging it to his chest and running back into his room. I walk into mine, hoping to just fall asleep and maybe even not wake up. Anything just to get this day over. I drop my bag filled with morning clothes and shower supplies and collapse onto my bed, remembering nothing else after. My Old Friend is told in two different perspectives about a man named Patrick Egan who is a successful author, married, has a daughter, while one day he reads that Mike Fallon had escaped from jail after eleven years of being locked up due to an attempted murder. Now Patrick has paranoia that gets in the way of his whole life, knowing he has one objective now: He has to survive before everything gets out.
