The first thing I want to do in this particular issue of Little Silver Neighbors is to take a moment to express how humbled and grateful I am for the opportunity to publish this magazine in this amazing community of people. October 2018 marks our first year in print, and wow— what a year it has been! I can honestly say that without your support, enthusiasm and the dedication of our local business sponsors this magazine would not be what it is today. When I set out to start this magazine in April 2017 it was a new challenge, something that I had not done before. With every new person/family I met from Little Silver or connected to the town, I was inspired to keep pushing towards the goal of the magazine you now receive. I can remember pushing myself to get the October 2017 issue funded with the goal to spread the word about Michael Grant’s MMRF cross country ride, how time flies by…. This is a special place, with people that are proud of their community and want to put their best into action to see it thrive. Thank you for being you Little Silver, I hope that you enjoy our first-year anniversary issue of Little Silver Neighbors. This issue we have a couple special features for you, one being the family that has sponsored the resident features you see each month, the Bender family. Another treat we have for you is a poem that was created by Allison Merchant our editor/content coordinator with a little assistance from myself, but I give her the credit! It is from us to you to thank the community in our own creative kind of way. This issue also has our second Pet Adoption page which I would like to thank Jill Arnold and the MCSPCA for their time helping us build. Please check out the story of “Red Velvet” or Red as she is affectionately known, and you might just find the newest member of the family?! Also, keep an eye out for a great expert article from Maria at the Haute Maven to help you take your Halloween game up to the next level! Again, I am so excited to bring you the first-year anniversary issue of Little Silver Neighbors, I hope you enjoy every turn of the page! It has been a privilege being your publisher, and I look forward to the next year connecting with the community and all the wonderful residents of Little Silver, NJ. To all of the residents whom shared their stories with us over this first year, from the bottom of my heart I thank you. You are a special group of people, and I am grateful to have met you. Until next time readers, I wish for you the best that fall can bring! Remember always that if you have something you would like to see in the publication, reach out to me anytime. Happy to say it has been amazing how many of you readers have contacted us, I am always excited to hear from the community. If there is an idea you have, or a story you want to make known, reach out to me anytime. My contact details are over on the left side of this page! Gratefully yours, Ryan Keating Publisher

RESIDENT FEATURE

The Bender Family There’s No Place Like Home By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story

W

e all know the tale of a young girl with ruby slippers. She sees wonders beyond her imagination and experiences adventure worthy of a timeless story. But perhaps the most important piece of the fantastic puzzle Frank L. Baum created for our enjoyment is the moral of this girl’s story. There is no place like home. Perhaps you have found your own home with a little guidance from Little Silver’s own ruby slipper: Stacie Bender. Stacie has become an expert in helping residents discover their homes, selling 22 homes in Little Silver in the last two years alone. 4

And while we love the opportunities she provides to have a place to rest our hats, we’ve taken our own opportunity to learn more about her home and her family, the Benders. Stacie and Jon married in 2005 at the Bay Head Yacht Club in Bay Head, NJ. They were high school sweethearts from Morristown Beard School in Morristown, NJ. The two had found a home within each other over the years, supporting Jon’s graduation from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY in 1999 while Stacie attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Little Silver Neighbors

RESIDENT FEATURE

While Jon continues to work in NYC, Stacie found her niche in real estate and became an agent with Heritage House Sotheby’s International Real Estate. “I’m extraordinarily passionate about my role in finding people their best home throughout Monmouth County,” Stacie said. The Benders made the move to Little Silver from Millburn, NJ five years ago as their children, Ellie and Rylie, grew to school-age. Stacie uses her unique opinion as a local resident to give her that edge to all her potential clients in the area. “We moved to Little Silver to be by the water and we love taking advantage of the beaches,” admitted Stacie. “The school district is incredible, and my husband is able to hop on the train to NYC and the list goes on and on.” It’s not hard to miss the Bender Family in the Rivers Edge neighborhood with the girls riding their bikes or on their tree swing. They love to participate in neighborhood block parties and progressive dinners, including the furriest members of the family Captain Sully and Bugsy Bender. Captain Sully is a Bernaise Mountain dog and Bugsy Bender is a nose-twitching rabbit. The Benders explore activities that are available in the area. “It’s often you’ll hear one of us say ‘fish on!’, as my girls love to fish with their dad,” Stacie said. Ellie won last year’s fluking tournament and Jon is an active member of the Navasink Shrewsbury River Fishing Club. Both girls play lacrosse while Stacie volunteers her time overseeing the girls’ lacrosse program in Little Silver and coaching 3rd and 4th grade teams. Ellie can stir up a delicious kitchen feast while Rylie kicks back at the Chapel Beach Club.

RESIDENT FEATURE EDUCATION

Each day is tackled with the motto to live life to the fullest. Family holds deep importance for the Bender Family as they actively travel to visit members from as close as Red Bank to Arlington, Virginia. A ski trip is planned once a year, guiding Stacie and her clan west. Their newest expedition is to Steamboat, Colorado. But just like so many others in Little Silver, the Benders know they need not go far to find family. “We’re so fortunate to have so many

great friends throughout Little Silver,” Stacie said. It looks like the Benders have gone over their own rainbow and found heart within their home. “Moving here was our best move ever.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? EDUCATION

RBR Goes Global By Allison Merchant

A

lthough summer vacation is over, and fall is officially here, we like to reflect all the wonderful changes a few months off allowed us to embrace. Select students from RBR seized the opportunity to travel beyond Little Silver. Sima Vaidya and Adeline Monfil, contributed toward Beijing’s efforts to transform its polluted city into a sustainable living environment. Vaidya pursued the “Building a Sustainable Mega City in Beijing China” CIEE program and a generous merit scholarship, inspired by her interest in climate change. She explained that some days the pollution was so bad in Beijing that she had to wear a mask. She contributed to the study of the city’s terrible pollution problem by performing experiments in local parks and testing the water. “I feel I have really grown from this experience. I got to explore beyond my own life. It was totally different from anything I know and very important to see how they are trying to change the environment in a place where it needs to be done,” Vaidya said. Dylan Weiss entered an entrepreneurial competition in Dublin, Ireland and was

able to collaborate with high school students from around the United States. “We studied how the entrepreneurial mind works and how to run a company,” Weiss said. “We worked as a team to pitch a product SharkTank style. My group made a custom t-shirt on a location-based product that would turn the google street map into a design on the t-shirt.” Orean Luna joined classmates Nicholas Principe and Lauren Marcolus in Ferrara, Italy, and they immersed in the beautiful Italian language and culture for four weeks. “I was staying with a host family and was fascinated to see how their home life worked. The culture seemed a lot like mine. We all ate together at the dining table and we shared a lot of laughs during dinner. We visited a lot of places like the ancient city of San Marino in the mountains with great views,” Luna said. “I took away that the world is not a small place and there was so much out there to explore. I would love to see a lot of places and I hope to look into colleges that have great study-abroad programs.” Gian Guerra similarly chose immersion in France and jumped right into hanging out with local Parisians. “They were very nice and they

wanted to understand our culture and compare theirs to ours to see what is similar and what brings us together, like being a good person, respecting each other and caring for each other, Guerra said. These students were among the 14 RBR students who took advantage of the prestigious Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Global Navigator Program. CIEE has been a global non-profit organization providing student study-abroad experiences; it is the largest sponsor of J-1 and F-1 visa programs. The programs which include nearly 30 countries feature four weeks of language and cultural immersion, three weeks of Service and Leadership or Global Discovery. The language immersion programs carry four college credits and the service and leadership programs provide the students with 50 community service hours. Through the generosity of a global-minded philanthropist, over $5 million and 2,000 scholarships are awarded each year to students who otherwise could never afford the experience of international study. RBR students received more $40,000 in scholarship money for this program in both merit and financial-aid based gifts. Criteria for acceptance include top grades, strong essays submissions and teacher recommendations.

Couture Your Costume

I

By Maria Elizabeth

have always been accused of having a rather over active imagination. Therefore, it’s no surprise really, that my favorite holiday/time of year has always been Halloween. The excuse to dress up like somebody else, anybody else, has always been an opportunity that I have relished taking advantage of! Devoid of any talents in the performing arts, costuming is where I set my sights as a young girl; and Halloween was always the perfect outlet for my talents. And my own pride and vanity has always insisted on going above and beyond. Winning Halloween is an absolute must for The Haute Maven! To be perfectly honest, making Halloween haute (yes I just went there), isn’t all that difficult. As long as you give yourself enough time (last minute doesn’t work here procrastinators), putting together a costume that will blow everyone away is rather easy. First things first, pick a theme or character. I tend to focus on very recognizable characters, either from tv/film or history. For the sake of this article, I will use my Maleficent costumes from last year as a reference. Once you have decided upon a costume, the next step is to start your research. Google pictures of what you want to recreate and start your search. The best sites for such things are Amazon for the simple props, and Etsy for the custom ones. I typically use a little of both to create my final look. For Maleficent, I decided to recreate two looks from the live action film with Angelina Jolie. The first look, her gown from the christening scene (from both the live action film and the animated Sleeping Beauty feature). The second was from the end of the live action film, where she is in a one piece skin tight (almost leather looking) one piece bodysuit with her wings. As both outfits required the headdress with her horns, I started there. I researched simple costume options from well known mass production companies, but wasn’t impressed, so I opted for a custom headdress. This is where Etsy comes in handy. No matter if you are costuming yourself, planning a party or decorating a home, Etsy is an incredible site for finding handmade, customized pieces. I was able to find a woman from Paris, France who 3D printed the horns and sculpted the headdress out of leather. It looked so on point with the film version. Now, it’s important to keep in mind budget when using Etsy. As custom pieces are one of a kind, you need to be prepared to spend a little more than $29.99. If you aren’t, it’s ok to go with the store bought option. However, when putting together a costume piece by piece, if you are going to spend money on a custom piece, it’s always a good idea to put that into the most important piece.

October 2018

For Maleficent it was her headress, for Cleopatra it would be her collar. If you are doing Vivian from Pretty Woman it’s her midriff white and blue mini dress. You don’t need to use custom pieces at all, however, if you don’t want to spend the money. For Elphaba, from the musical Wicked, a few years ago, I pieced together an entire costume just by looking for Victorian skirts, green unitards, corsets, turtlenecks and then picked up the hat and broom from a local Halloween superstore. It was a smash hit, just like the musical, and it looked far better than the costume in a bag versions. That’s really the key to making something look incredible and stunning, using pieces that have more substance than the see through mass produced, flimsy bagged costumes. The rest of Maleficent’s second look was put together just this way. I had my custom headdress, so I hopped on Amazon and started searching. I found a liquid effect zip up bodysuit for $30, a faux fur collar for $9.99, black angel wings for $40, a Maleficent staff for $19.99, and I bought a little crow to glue to the top. I then pulled out my over the knee leather boots from my closet, and there it was. Maleficent in all her glory. Now seeing as I have brown eyes and she was supposed to have green, I opted to wear contacts. These can be cheap, but I wear prescription ones, so I had to spend a bit more if I wanted to not walk into walls. Then it was all in the makeup, which was copied right from pictures with regular white setting powder and black eyeshadow for contouring. I will now admit to being absolutely insane, and telling you that for the christening gown I went custom. I wanted the full effect. So Etsy it was again. And I just wore the bodysuit underneath for quick change and had my staff and crow ready. I then added a black choker I sold at the store. The more cost effective winged costume, however, turned out to be more of a hit. This is the one I brought down to Disney World with my children and wore to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom. I couldn’t fit the gown, which had a hoop into my luggage. Now, I am not lying, I have witnesses, I was stopped throughout the park by people who thought I worked at the park as a character. I was asked to sign autograph books and to take pictures with guests. My kids were hysterically laughing the entire time. Not to mention I had my daughter wearing a custom Sleeping Beauty dress! It was probably the most fun I have ever had celebrating Halloween. You can even create looks using regular clothes. Just swing by The Haute Maven this October and check out our Wizard of Oz themed window display created using clothes exclusively sold at the store. All you need to do is keep the basic theme in mind and use your imagination. So there it is... your way to a Haute Maven Halloween. It’s really all at your fingertips and in your head. This year I’m going all out and doing seven days of costumes, from Pretty Woman, to Marie Antoinette! So keep an eye on @thehautemaven in October, for hints on how to create more haute costumes! 13

BUSINESS PROFILE

Sandy Paws

Fur-loving Times For Twenty Years By Allison Merchant

I

n 1998 Dawn Tallo traded in her work in the fashion industry with fashionable fur for a different kind of coat, opening Sandy Paws in Sea Bright, NJ. The business began on the premise of providing gentle loving care with pet grooming salon services. This concept grew over the next ten years and by 2007 Tallo opened a dog daycare and kennel/grooming salon in Port Monmouth. “After five years, two small children and no sleep, I decided to go small again, and reopen in Shrewsbury as a grooming studio,” elaborated Tallo. The new studio caters to dogs and cats with full salon services with the occasional nail grooming for rabbits and ferrets. When Tallo began, she understood the pros and cons of different grooming studio models. Working with animals her entire life, she wanted to provide that comfort one experiences with family members. She aspired to create an environment that was clean, fun and stress-free. “You should always expect the best from your pet care professionals,” Tallo said. “We are here to help you be the best owner for your pets. We work hard every day to make you and your fur baby happy and we thank you for your loyalty and trust over the past 20 years. We look forward to many more.” Tallo values the benefits of dedication and hard work. Her family instilled in her upbringing the moral reward of putting in the effort each and every day with their own business-owning ventures.

She relates a recent encounter with a 60 pound puppy who was not excited at the prospect of a bath. Mischief ensued and Tallo received a bath as well that day. But the joy expressed by both parties during the incident led to a successful bath and an extremely happy puppy. “He pranced around the shop like a boss after his grooming was complete. He was very proud of himself,” Tallo said. These are the small memories that make the most of the unflagging efforts in running a business. Tallo receives support from her wonderful crew Amanda and Kristina, and her family. Her husband Steve works for Omni, an electrical contracting firm and she has four children: two step children and two from a previous marriage. Family is important to Tallo and remains a strong foundation for the success of her business. Aside from being the founder and sole owner of Sandy Paws, Tallo also work closely with a local rescue WAG ON INN RESCUE GROUP (WOI) www.wagoninn.rescuegroup.org. “I love to have my hands in many jars,” she admitted. She currently has three dogs, two adopted through WOI, the other adopted privately. Bean is a four-year-old Sato, Amy an eightyear-old Dashound and Mr. Bumbles is a Pekingese between the age of 13 and 15. All of her furry family can be seen on her website www.sandypawsnj.com.

“My best days are when dogs and owners come in for the first time, both unsure and nervous, and leave happy and want to come back,” Tallo said. This strive for excellence reflects Tallo’s passion for animals and her strong sense of humor.

GREENWAYS & WATERWAYS

Recreational Mountaineering By AJ McNally

I

’m handing this article over to my husband AJ this month, as he and my son Jack had a most amazing adventure in August, that I know many of you might like to try. Enjoy.

Did you ever want to climb a mountain? How about the highest one in the lower 48? It’s within your grasp. In New Jersey the highest point is High Point, at 1,803 Feet. In Eastern North America (east of the Mississippi River) the highest point is Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet in North Carolina. For those who crave real adventure there lies a Mountain in California called Mount Whitney, that holds the distinction of the highest point in the lower 48, standing at 14,508 feet. Whitney is within the reach of many physically, as it is not a technical climb. This means no ropes and very little scrambling over rocks. It is a clear path from the Portal (beginning of the Whitney Trail at 8,374 feet) and summiting at 14,508 for an elevation gain of 6,134 over an 11-mile hike through forests, meadows and switch backs. While this (22 miles round trip) may seem a lot and the elevation gain daunting, it can be done by the average person in generally fit shape, without the need for marathon like training. I know, I’ve done it twice over past seven years and lived to tell the tales. The actual hike can be done in one day, which is what I’ve done. It’s best to prep with a few day hikes up around 10,000 feet to help ward off altitude sickness. Both my son Jack and a friend back in 2011 suffered severe altitude sickness but it did not stop either of them from completing the climb. The effects of altitude sickness can be reduced with medication and acclimation hikes prior to the day of the hike. Another option is camping at either one of the two campsites along the trail but that requires submitting to a lottery system in February of the year you intend to hike. This is a competitive lottery and if you want to camp on the trail you will need to be prompt in submitting your online requests for either a day hike or overnight. Day hike passes are available via lottery in the Lone Pine Ranger Station the day prior at 2:00 pm. For my first trip we won the February lottery for day hike but the most recent climb we winged it, scoring passes the day before in the Ranger Station lottery. It’s best to fly though Las Vegas, for cheap flights and rental car. The trip to Lone Pine is four hours. You can detour to Death Valley and the Badwater Basin, the lowest

point in North America. So, you can visit the lowest and highest point in North America in one trip! Another side trip is a visit to the Hoover Dam / Meade Lake just east of Las Vegas. Both Lone Pine and Independence CA offer varying degrees of lodging and restaurants. Whether you do the climb up and down in one day or camp on the way up is a personal decision and should be based on physical ability and time you have had to acclimate to the elevation gain. Elevation sickness can hit anyone and can occur as low as 8,000 feet or below. Do your research on this before you go and listen to your body. While this is a doable trip for many, safety should be first in mind all the time. Good season to attempt this hike is July-September when there is usually little or no snow on the trails. This year we only saw snow in the nooks and crannies and encountered bits of ice at highest elevation. Supplies: 3-4 Quarts of water per person with day pack and either a filter pump or iodine tablets when replenishing on the trail. No water above 12,000 feet so fill up before you summit at Trail Camp (12,000 feet). Food: snacks of trail mix, slim jims, fruit or anything light that provides energy. You won’t need a lot of food. Nuun tablets in every other quart is good for electrolytes and vitamin replenishment.

If you are interested in this trip there are resources listed below and I’m available and welcome any inquires. Happy Climbing. AROUND TOWN

We are S.U.R.E. Keeping Busy By Ryan Keating

F

or the last two years, We are S.U.R.E., Single Use Reduction Effort has been working to create awareness about the detriment of single-use plastics items and their impact on our community. Lead by Jennifer Borenius, and working together with Little Silver's Environmental Commission, We are S.U.R.E.’s mission to find simple everyday ways to promote environmentally friendly practices and help create a more sustainable coastal peninsula. The focus of We are S.U.R.E has been to eliminate the usage of plastic bags and plastic water bottles from everyday practice. With a logo created from the hard work of our RBR Visual Arts student, Sophie Novarro, and fellow RBR students Ava Forbes and Olivia Rogers on the team, the students are excited to find creative ways to bring sustainable practices to high school; so advocacy can take root. Building on this advocacy, and working with other local organizations, like Clean Ocean Action our students became Junior Beach Sweeps captains organizing and managing several sweeps on our beaches this past April. Raising awareness sometimes takes a different approach and Jennifer is not afraid to get people's attention. In June, representing We are S.U.R.E., she joined forces with Rumson's Environmental Commission to participate in the Rally for the Rivers, an Eco-fest, meant to educate, inspire and motivate for positive change. Dressing up as the "river", embodying all of the power and the life that all water provides, she wants to focus people on realizing we are all connected. Leading a guided meditation, she offered, "...the water is a part of all of us. We must nurture and cherish, take care of it as we do ourselves". Most recently, Jennifer was asked to join the WeForum a female-led organization, hoping to change the healthcare paradigm by shifting focus to behavior modification. WeForum supports free educational health and wellness programs and services developed by Monmouth Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health affiliate and other community organizations that promote early detection and prevention of

20

illnesses. With co-leader Clare Broderick of Cleaner Greener living, the STEP UP campaign promotes the creation of a more sustainable community environment in which we all can flourish, by using our collective initiative, voices and actions. www.weforumgroup.org Jennifer believes so firmly in our need to rethink our disposable ways that in August she arrived at the Joint Senate Committee adorned in a home-made plastic bag dress. It was another attempt to make a statement. And thankfully, it worked. A bill that would assess a five-cent fee was at the center of the debate. During the proceedings, Governor Murphy vetoed the bill allowing for stronger legislation, local control and the ability to affect and change individual behavior. Jennifer, the We are S.U.R.E team, and all of the advocate groups, now hope that residents in Little Silver and other surrounding communities are ready for a more progressive posture. So far, since the beginning of Jennifer's journey two years ago when there was only one town in New Jersey, Longport near Atlantic City — there are now more than two dozen municipalities that have adopted bans — not only on plastic bags, but straws and Styrofoam too! "I am excited about the opportunity to make some changes that will have a real impact on the lives of our children. We are only caretakers, and our town, our planet needs us. We are the only ones who can affect change. And change begins at home — with you." For more information or to become involved in any of the programs mentioned above, please contact Jennifer at (973) 809-5413 or jenniferborenius@gmail.com.
