Hello Readers, It is incredible how fast this year has gone by and we are already approaching the close of 2018. Your community magazine continues to grow, flourishing with great local content to connect you, our dear readers, to what is going on in your neighborhood. Little Silver Neighbors has grown into the publication it is today because of you—the residents of Little Silver—and your passion for this wonderful community. We have had more and more readers/organizations in town reach out to us each month with story ideas, nominations for outstanding residents, and local businesses wanting to support their town publication. There is no greater gift that I could have hoped for than what this community has given our publication’s team by supporting Little Silver Neighbors. I would like to personally thank our local contributing writers: your time and enthusiasm mean the world to me. Our publication team appreciates every word, sentence, and paragraph. From the bottom of my heart: Thank You! Be sure to see the “Longwood Gardens” piece in Greenways and Waterways, and our latest Food for Thought to help with healthy eating on-the-go advice with the holiday hustle and bustle. We have a terrific issue lined up for you to close out the year featuring the Oldroyd Family on our cover and as our resident feature article. We have a wonderful piece on the Woman’s Exchange. Stop in for a visit and you might just find that perfect holiday gift while supporting a unique part of Little Silver’s history! Also look for a great piece about a group of young athletes giving back to the community. Congratulations to the U12 Jersey Shore Thunder Baseball team, you are all-stars in my book, great work! In closing, our community publication is only possible because of the amazing group of business sponsors supporting Little Silver Neighbors. These businesses care about your community and give special offers just for the readers of this magazine. If they offer a good or service you might need, give them a call or visit because they are an excellent group of people! We look forward to seeing you again in 2019 readers, until then our LSN team wishes you and your loved ones the happiest of holidays!

Hoya Saxa at Georgetown sporting events. The Oldroyd Family are avid rugby fans. Dan played in college and recreationally. He currently coaches for the Jersey Shore Youth Rugby Association. Rugby is a contact sport that influenced the early forms of American football and Canadian football. It originated in England but quickly developed and spread globally to become a skilled and exciting sport. The Jersey Shore Rugby Association is a co-educational program that provides children the opportunity to learn discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship. On and off the rugby pitch, the organization strives to encourage commitment, integrity, and honor for all players. “It is a great learning experience. We are working hard to build up teams for all age groups in the area,” Dan said. Some of his most valuable players were Aoife and Fionn. Fionn still participates in the program.

That being said, one of the absolute favorite events that cement the family’s love for Little Silver is the annual Little Silver PTO 5K. “I am a huge fan of the Little Silver 5K and the after party,” Dan said. “It is one of my favorites. It is sort of rare to see that camaraderie of a town and I think a lot of people work really hard to make that happen.” He added that this year’s race marked the official surpassing of Aoife with her parents. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree and in this case, it takes off at a sprint. Aoife is an avid dancer and actor, currently at KICK dance studios and debuted as the Genie in the Phoenix Production’s kids summer camp production this past summer. “She has big Broadway dreams!” Kelly exclaimed. “Also, Aoife works very hard selling cookies for her Girl Scout Troop every year and we are always so appreciative how supportive our neighborhood is with her efforts.”

I think it’s all about finding the opportunity for laughter and fun and trying to make sure you can smile in every situation.

ecember always seems to be the month that goes by in a flurry. Whether it be a flurry of holiday chaos, the ushering of cold winter, or the close of another year, December always vibrates with energy. True to form, this December reverberates a bright collage of the past, canvassing the vivid future. Nearly twenty years after graduating from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and Finance, Dan Oldroyd will again be donning his cap and gown this month. “I have always wanted to study international policy, but I could never make the time,” Dan said. “This new program popped up and it worked great for my schedule. I think the timing has been really awesome and it’s great to re-engage 4

after having been out of school for almost 20 years.” Dan returned to Georgetown University in pursuance of his Masters in International Business and Policy. Georgetown University holds many memories for Dan academically and personally, being the location where he met his future wife Kelly Cronin. They met his first year on campus but began dating the following year when Kelly was his boss at the on-campus student run credit union. “She’s still the boss,” Dan said affectionately. Kelly graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and worked as a fashion photographer at Maggy London, an associate with Edelman Public Relations, and in academia with Marymount School of NYC and Princeton University. During the younger years of their

children Aoife and Fionn, Kelly was the owner/ operator of Stroller Strides Fitness. Currently, she is the vice president of the EFLS, a PTO Trustee, and the Junior Girl Scout Co-Leader of Troop 107. “She also enjoys keeping her passion for art alive by cartooning funny messages for and with the kids,” Dan said. Dan maintains his position with JP Morgan Asset Management as a portfolio manager focused on crafting retirement solutions for American workers. He has been with the company since his internship in 1999. Out of the office, Dan keeps busy as the co-chair of BNCH (Business Network Career-minded Hoyas) for the Georgetown undergraduate business school. s our days shorten and the weather turns colder, we are reminded that “winter is coming.” When we first moved back to New Jersey after a decade in South China then Maui, you can imagine I was not acclimated. That first winter was a rough one. AJ and I had agreed that we would not take our baby out of the house when it was below 45 degrees. We soon remembered that that would mean we were house-bound for at least four months. We rented a summer bungalow on the river that first year, the last house in Monmouth Beach, at the end of the peninsula. It had no insulation, no barrier from the whipping winds and no storm windows. There were days when AJ had to wait for the tide to go down before he could leave for work, and a day I thought the dog was caught in the current only to discover it was a seal swimming by. We ate dinner in our coats, but we loved that cottage. That was when I heard this little Norwegian saying, “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” which translates to “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.” I bought my first pair of Kamik boots and I never looked back. Nothing beats walking on the beach in the snow, being the first to hike Hartshorne after a blizzard or snow shoeing through Fair Haven woods, when it’s only you, the dog, and a few startled deer. So buck up and get out, life it waiting.

Newfoundland furry friend shares the household with two guinea pigs, Alfred and Yet-E. “Whether it is the Little Silver 5k and the after party, whether it’s the Little Silver [Professionals and] Business Association and doing the carriage rides, Little Silver Day, all those things are what makes this a special place,” Dan said. “I think it’s all about finding the opportunity for laughter and fun and trying to make sure you can smile in every situation.”  DO YOU KNOW A NEIGHBOR WHO HAS A STORY TO SHARE? But I digress, because what I want to write about this month is Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. This magical estate began life as a Quaker farm. The original forward-thinking owners began planting the arboretum in the early 1800s. It was a gem of its era but fell into disrepair and was on the brink of being sold for logging when Pierre du Pont decided to buy the farm to preserve the trees. While he had no plans for the farm upon purchase, he soon fell in love with the region and began building Longwood Gardens. I must admit I have never been to the gardens in nice weather. We have fought blustery winds and off-season rains but there is never a bad time to amble amongst the trees and explore the gardens and fountains. To experience The Garden at its best you need only to visit during the winter holidays. To say the Great Hall and indoor gardens are magical is an understatement. The grounds and main building transport you back to the time of opulent wealth and grandeur but this is never truer than in the Christmas season, when they take on an air of enchantment. Do a quick Google search of images, they will have you hooked. The weekends are of course packed, so try to find a week day for your journey. I would advise you reserve an admission time slot online before you go, they do sell out as we get closer to the holidays. The trails and walkways are well mapped. They now have

an app to download, to help you maximize your trip. They have nice restaurants and for the Christmas season a beer garden is set up. You can enjoy “Breakfast with Santa” which definitely needs to be book in advance. One more bit of holiday advice: don’t get caught up in the crazy that can happen at the holidays. If you can’t find poppers to put on your plates, no one will notice. If your child does not get that must have toy, (that they forget about the minute they open it) they will not be social pariahs. The holidays truly are not about what you get or what you give. It’s about love and friends and family. So, take a breath, gather the ones you love and enjoy a day at Longwood Gardens. The holidays are not about spending money, they are about spending time with the people who are most important to you. Although if you need a great gift the new book “Ladies of The Grove” by Billie CrawfordMcNally in now available on amazon. Although if you need a great gift the new book “Ladies of The Grove” by Billie CrawfordMcNally in now available on amazon. fter what seemed like weeks of cloudy, rainy weather, the sun came out to shine on the more than 930 runners who took to local streets to run the 25thannual Little Silver 5K this past Sunday, September 30th. Hosted by the Little Silver PTO, the race began in front of Red Bank Regional High School and wound through the streets of Little Silver, ending with a lap around the track at Red Bank Regional High School. Honoring the milestone anniversary of this event, strong talent was prevalent this year, with fast results seen across both the men’s and women’s divisions. For a second year in a row, Milltown’s Kyle Price raced across the finish line first with a blazing

time of 15:16.9. Coming in second was Aaron Leskow of Toms River in 15:38 with Mathew Slocum of Montclair placing third in 16:10. Crossing first for the women was Kristin Andrews of Manalapan, finishing in 17:48.8. Kiera Russo of Eatontown placed second in the women’s division with 18:27.9 and crossing third was Robin Evangelist of Egg Harbor Township with a time of 18:45.4. The day also saw more than 150 young runners participate in the one-mile run that commenced before the 5K. The race began and finished to loud cheers on the Red Bank Regional track, with each participant receiving a medal for their accomplishment.

Rounding out the amazing event were the 90 runners in Pre-K to 4th grade age range who participates in the Kiddie Dashes. These future runners impressed everyone with their competitive spirit and were rewarded with medals for their efforts. The post-race after party was held at the Little Silver firehouse where runners, friends, and family celebrated with food, games and music by The RipTide. hronic tendon pain is one of the most common conditions seen in Sports Medicine and Orthopedic practice. Tendons are the fibrous ends of muscle that attach the muscle to bone. Every time a muscle contracts it causes stress on that tendon. Tendinitis happens when this stress occurs over and over again, leading to inflammation. If the tendinitis is not treated or doesn’t improve with conservative treatment, it can become a chronic condition called tendinosis. Patients often experience chronic tendon pain in their elbow, sometimes called tennis or golfer's elbow, in their Achilles tendon, rotator cuff tendons, patellar and quadriceps tendon. Although not a tendon, plantar fasciitis is also a very similar condition. The initial treatments for all of these conditions are RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), anti-inflammatory medication (Advil, Motrin, Aleve) and physical therapy. If there is still pain after trying these treatments, the next step is a steroid injection. If that fails, the last option used to be surgery. Now with advancements in medicine there are many new treatments to help avoid surgery. Some of these treatments are: high dose laser therapy, extracorporeal pulse activation therapy (EPAT), regenerative therapies (PRP, Stem cells) and Tenex. High Dose Laser Therapy (HDLT) is completely non-invasive. It uses laser energy to help promote healing. It works on four different pathways in the body. 1. It causes vasodilation, which increases blood flow to the damaged area while simultaneously reducing the inflammation. 2. Reduces pain by suppressing pain receptors. 3. Helps in formation of new capillaries which again brings more blood flow to aid in healing. 4. Penetrates into the damaged cells to activate them to aid in repair. HDLT is not painful.

Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy (EPAT) is also a completely non-invasive treatment. It uses pressure waves to stimulate the metabolism, enhance blood circulation and accelerate healing. It is usually performed as series of 4-5 treatments performed once a week. There is no recovery time and patients can return to their normal routine immediately. Regenerative medicine is using your own body to help stimulate healing in areas that otherwise would not heal themselves. The two most common regenerative therapies are platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells. PRP is performed by drawing the patient’s blood and separating and concentrating the platelets. Those platelets are then injected using ultrasound into the site of pain. The platelets have growth and healing factors that help the area heal. Stem cells are cells that can become other cells (muscle, tendon, cartilage). The largest concentration of stem cells in our bodies is found in our bone marrow and in our fat cells. Through painless methods we can extract those cells and inject them into the site of injury. These stem cells can then repair the injured areas. Tenex is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of chronic tendon pain. With advancements in ultrasound, we can see under the skin without having to make a big incision. Using the Tenex needle the bad tissue can be removed but, with an incision so small it doesn’t require a stitch, unlike traditional surgery which requires the incision to be a couple of inches long. Because the overlying tissue is not disturbed, the recovery is much faster but has the same success rate as open surgery.  At Apex Sports and Regenerative Medicine we are trained in all of these non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures, which can help you recover faster and without the need for surgery. If you would like to learn more about any of these procedures, you can visit our website at www. apexsportsnj.com.

t. John’s Episcopal Church in Little Silver was built by hand in 1876 by early settlers of Little Silver and the church’s first parishioners. The historic church has a rich history of fellowship and outreach. Although the church is small, it continues to have a big impact on helping people locally, nationally and around the globe! Recently, a Sunday school student and his new service dog inspired an incredible pay it forward mission for the church! In December, Jay and his family ventured to Xenia, Ohio for two weeks to receive and train with Jay’s service dog, a Golden Retriever named Chuck. Chuck was raised and trained at 4 Paws for Ability, a non-profit that enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task trained service dogs. These dogs provide increased independence for the children and assistance to their families. Service dog Chuck came home with the family on December 23rd. Once they got into their new family routine, Chuck started attending Sunday school with Jay. The dynamic duo immediately brought a new opportunity for learning! According to Kate Galbavy, the director of Sunday school, “Jay and Chuck brought our Sunday school to the next level! They

gave us an incredible, empowering, teachable moment about caring for all of God’s creatures, being grateful for your blessings, and helping others.” Immediately, the Sunday school class wanted to know everything about Chuck, and how they could help another child get their service dog. It can cost between $40,000 and $60,000 to raise and train a service dog and 4 Paws for Ability asks families to fundraise $15,000 to $17,000 of that cost, which can take some families years. Jay’s mom, Cate, reached out to 4 Paws for Ability to inquire if any families needed help reaching their fundraising goal. Sunday school kids got to work collecting coins from their families, neighbors and the congregation. They also partnered with Anne Connell, the Director of St. John’s Nursery School, to collect change from her nursery school children. Within six weeks, they raised the $1,400 needed to secure a boy’s fundraising balance and gift a service dog to a boy in need! “Our Sunday School children are living the Gospel message that we are all to be carrying throughout the world,” affirmed the Reverend Valerie Redpath, Rector of St. John’s. “Our focus is on both expressing and actively going out with Jesus’ love into a hurting world, and our compassionate children are setting an example for all of us.”

From 1 to 100, people are presented with opportunities to connect and influence. In 1934, more than 80 years ago, a promise was made by a local small gift shop: help people help themselves. “Generations have shopped here and not a day doesn't go by without someone remarking that her mom and grandmom have shopped here,” Boaman said. “And now the third generation continues the tradition.” Craftmanship is highly valued with the diverse representation of merchandise. This includes decorative home accessories such as pottery, mailboxes, placemats, seashore inspired gifts, art, frames, handbags, jewelry and accessories, smock dresses, hand knitted children’s sweaters, blankets, baby items and wooden toys. “Our renown baby department offers handknit hats, sweaters, blankets, smocked dresses as well in both traditional and contemporary styles to suit all tastes,” Boaman added. “Handcrafted wooden toys and room decor round out a captivating department.” With the holidays just around the corner, there are monogrammed stockings made to order and ready to become a treasured family heirloom. “Stop by, meet, and support your neighborhood gift shop,” Boaman said. Nothing says home for the holidays like these gifts that continue to give. The sentimentality of each handcrafted purchase is wrapped in heart and charity. “How lucky Little Silver residents are to have such a wonderful store right in their backyard.”

uring the first week of October, Liva Helt experienced a newfound excitement when she was called out onto the football field at Red Bank Regional High School. She kicked her first field goal of the season for the RBR varsity football team. “It was just before my birthday and I came out and did it,” Helt exclaimed. “Afterwards they [the team] all sang Happy Birthday to me.” The Czech Republic native is no stranger to unconventionality. She was born a Danish citizen and has lived Vienna and California before settling in New Jersey. Her school year is spent in America with summers abroad. Helt travels to Somerset, NJ, to practice with the Players Development Academy (PDA). PDA is an elite soccer club that promotes youth soccer excellence, national and international competitions. Her playing talent and stellar academic record earned her admission to Columbia University two-years prior to her graduation. Helt was drawn to football last year while cheering among her classmates on the BUC Deck. The rules of the PDA soccer program prevent her from playing soccer on her local high school team but does

not affect her participation on other sports teams. When she watched the placekicker kick an extra point through the uprights, Helt thought, “If I can kick a soccer ball, I bet I can kick a football.” A quick email to RBR football coach Nick Giglio and Helt embarked on a new endeavor: learning the game. “I am also very proud of Liva for putting herself out there in a different environment—going from the soccer field, where she is ultra-comfortable, to a football field where she had to learn the game from scratch,” said Giglio. The all-male team embraced their new member right away and Helt was welcomed as one of the guys. Her drive and dedication has earned her 18 points this season, kicking for both the junior varsity and varsity teams. Her talents and motivation derive from different elements in her life. “With everything that is going on with women and how they are being treated, I wanted to do something where I could break a glass ceiling,” Helt said. “As my dad always says, ‘Be the change you want to see.’ It was very important for me to do this.”

but who share crafters who want to build their businesses,” said Elaine Boaman, manager of The Woman’s Exchange. The unique gift shop, located on Church street, donates their profits at the close of each year to a variety of Monmouth County charities. Recipients throughout the years have included, Lunch Break, 180 Turning Lives Around, Mary's Place, Saturday Soup, Habcore, and Riverview Behavioral Health Center. “Since 1934, artisans have realized more than $2,800,000 in earnings,” Boaman said. Volunteers varying from students and adults staff the store daily. It operates under a management comprised from a Board of Trustees. These members are drawn from the pool of volunteers. Each effort is collaborative to run the shop and overall store operations. “The store operates with the help of several part time employees, but the support of over 40 volunteers really keeps the shop humming!” Boaman said. “Each works two half day shifts a month or more. Our volunteers average over five years of service.” Boaman described the atmosphere as welcoming and enjoyable, providing a perfect environment to develop lasting friendships. When one steps inside the store, they are greeted affectionately. Inquiries are made about family and friends, establishing that wonderfully intimate repertoire rarely found in modern times.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON B y T amm i F e e C a r l s o n

don't know anyone who has the luxury of really being at “home.” Even the “stay at home moms” or those who work from a “home office.” We are all running around like chickens without a head no matter where your day resonates or how many people in your household you care for. We are constantly eating and drinking on the go, take out or at restaurants, especially during the holidays. As metro humans we fill ALL our time, helping and doing for others in what should be personal time. I will not dare say spare time because it does not exist. We also all aspire to eat healthier for ourselves and our families, but have tremendous difficulty doing so. We set goals of only having take-out twice a week, bringing lunch with us to work, food shopping and cooking! Only to have our inspiring plans fall to crap after we have spent a bunch of money food shopping and then having it rot in the fridge because that spare time to cook just never shows up. As a nutritionist, I always put health first. As a mom, wife, and manager of three businesses, I find a chunk of cheese and a banana mimics a meal at times. We have to carve out time to cook and having great fresh produce is

most helpful. Starting with quality fresh fruits and vegetables, lean organic meat, olive oil, sea salt, and pepper you can make an amazing meal in less than ten minutes prep and 30 minutes cooking. Keep it fresh and keep it simple. Whole Foods has amazing spice mixes with low sodium. Sprinkle some over thawed meat and vegetables in a casserole dish, then heat to 400 for 30 minutes, and stick a few cubed sweet potatoes drizzled with olive oil and sea salt. Add a fresh arugula salad with goat cheese and plums (prunes, or citrus), olive oil, sea salt, lemon, and pepper. Done! You are super, we all are, but none of us are super human, so make your life easier and healthier by making it simple. Start fresh with easy prep and quick cook times!  Tammi is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our Family Features. For advice from a degreed nutritionist, exercise specialist and certified health coach, look for her monthly column Food for Thought in upcoming issues to find beneficial lifestyle alternatives and yummy recipes.

don't know anyone who has the luxury of really being at “home.” Even the “stay at home moms” or those who work from a “home office.” We are all running around like chickens without a head no matter where your day resonates or how many people in your household you care for.

Tammi is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our Family Features. any times, when one is asked why they moved to Little Silver or the Peninsula in general, the answer is an excited echo. The beach. The proximity to the famous (or infamous) Jersey Shore is quite enticing and often a selling point for real estate. There is something to say for the lull of a waves crashing, the scent of saltwater underlying every smell, and the continuous softness that moves in the breeze. That is why even as the waters turn to freezing temperatures and the sands are covered in snow, care is needed by these beloved beaches. October 20, the environmental organization Clean Ocean Action hosted their 33rd Annual Fall 2018 Beach Sweep with more than 60 beaches participating in the event. Volunteers at the Monmouth beach location included some new comers that decided to take a swing at giving back to their community. The Jersey Shore Thunder is a competitive baseball organization that aims to foster and develop the youth of Monmouth County. Members of the U12 team chose their local summer stomping grounds for their first beach sweep. “In order to raise money for our upcoming trip to Cooperstown, our team is hosting a number of fundraisers,” said Deana Walker, representative for Jersey Shore Thunder U12 team. “However, we also wanted to give back to the same community that supports us in a way that not only helps us but our global community as well.” Traditionally in the summer there is a week-long tournament hosted in Cooperstown, NY. This event is considered one of the elite sporting events in the country with more than 1,300 competitive baseball teams

from all over the country playing at the worldrenowned Dreams Park. Members of the team are treated with the respect of the major leagues. “For our players, that have been a team since 2nd grade, it [Cooperstown] is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and a celebration of the memories they have created and the legacy they have created for those rising Jersey Shore Thunder players who await the same experience,” Walker said. This was the first year the team participated in the beach sweep but they hope to establish it as a yearly event. “As we all know, teamwork is so much more than just knowing the fundamentals of a sport,” Walker said. “Being able to work together in a variety of settings helps build camaraderie and skill sets that can be transferred on the field and most importantly in life.” The true success of the event was the collaborative effort exhibited by the boys and the learning experience that left an important impression. “We recorded the types and frequency of the waste we collected, which Clean Ocean Action utilizes in its discussions to advocate for keeping our oceans pollution free,” Walker said. Baseball and the beach both share the beloved summer season. Each take care, hard work, and dedication during the off-season to truly make it a successful run. Little Silver Neighbors would like to wish the Jersey Shore Thunder U12 team luck at Cooperstown and a hearty thank you for keeping our treasured beaches clean.
