To celebrate this occasion we have brought a new concept into your homes this month. We are proud to present the FICTION ISSUE! This issue of LSN contains local submissions and some creative original content to celebrate the 2nd year of our community publication.

Firstly, I have to tip my hat to Allison Merchant, our wonderful editor, for being the point-person with the fiction issue as well as the concept’s creator! This is a special issue of Little Silver Neighbors with original content from your community, maybe even right next door? The magazine has been an outlet for the community to connect with news and announcements etc... so, with the 2nd anniversary issue we felt it would be a great to let the community express themselves a bit. As you may have seen within the pages of the magazine for the past several months we have been asking for writers, artists, poets, and our creative neighbors to send in submissions for this very issue, and I am so pleased to announce that the fiction issue has finally arrived.

“I’m just happy that I have the kind of support in my life with my in-laws and my dad and extended family that I’m just lucky to be able to do all that. A lot of people without that support can’t wear as many hats and can’t be involved in so many things. Obviously being a mom is the most important hat that I wear—the hat I value the most. I wouldn’t be able to do any of it without the support of our family,” Elizabeth said.

Family and community go hand in hand for the Giblin Family, dating back generations.

Peter’s grandfather Harold Giblin was fire chief in 1970. His father, Shannon Giblin, was president of the fire company in 1996 and 1997. In 1954, Harold was a founding member of the Little Silver First Aid Squad and held the rank of Captain of Little Silver First Aid in 1956. Peter followed in his footsteps and became Captain in 2010 and 2011. Even since the expansion of his own family in 2017, Peter expressed he doesn’t see himself volunteering any less. No matter if his beeper goes off in the middle of the night, he is up and out the door.

“I guess you really don’t know what’s going to happen when you’re in a crisis situation, the feeling that sometimes people feel helpless,” Peter explained. “I like the fact that no matter

what, we’re always going to help somebody’s day get better. Being able to help people, that’s the most rewarding part of it. It’s not something I plan on giving up, it’s a major part of my life.”

When the family goes on walks in town, that small stroll turns into opportunities to see friends and chat. They enjoy participating in community events like the Memorial Day parade, Markham Place School’s graduation, and going out on fire trucks every Christmas Eve for the fire company Santa runs.

“It’s just reminds us that we are a part of the fabric of this community,” Elizabeth said.

“It’s really nice and I love it, and I love how everyone knows us, and it’s really cool. It’s great when we have Charlie in the park and all the kids are coming up to Pete and saying ‘hi Officer Pete’. It’s a really cool feeling.”

W

hen you are a child, the world around you seems big and wondrous. Small towns become cities and adults become superheroes. At the age of seven, Peter Giblin was surrounded by everyday superheroes. His grandfather was a police officer, his grandmother a police dispatcher; his uncles were police officers and firefighters. His father was a police officer.

Peter knew that he wanted to continue that tradition and serve as a third generation police officer. And he knew he wanted to serve in no other town than his hometown: Little Silver.

“To me it was a family business from when I was a little kid, being able to see my dad as a police officer I wanted to be that too,” Peter said.

Now, a husband and father of three, Peter achieved his childhood dream of becoming a police officer for Little Silver. He also volunteers with the Little Silver Fire Department and EMS alongside his wife, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth serves the EMS department in between her work as a lawyer. She defends police officers and municipalities when they are sued for civil rights violations.

“I followed the same path [as my father] because I never met someone that loved their 6

job as much as my dad did or does,” she said.

“My dad absolutely loves being a lawyer, so it made it look really fun. I came to a crossroads in college and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and law school seemed like a logical step for me. I didn’t have the life long dream that Peter did, he always knew he wanted to be a police officer. I didn’t realize it until I was in college and decided to give law school a shot. The rest is history, I went into the family business.”

Before the birth of their son Charlie, Peter joined the Little Silver fire company and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) first as a cadet in 2001, then becoming a regular member in 2005. He was selected as “Firefighter of the Year” in 2006 and quickly rose through the ranks to become Fire Chief in 2014. That same year Elizabeth was EMS Captain, a first time in Borough history for the department heads to be held simultaneously by a husband and wife.

Peter served as Fire Chief again in 2016 and currently holds the office of Assistant Fire Chief and Vice President of the fire company.

“EMS and the people at the firehouse are our extended family,” Elizabeth said. “We just have such a unique relationship with the people

down there, it’s just a unique experience. You don’t usually save a life with too many other people and it’s a unique bonding experience with the calls that we’ve been on and the things that we’ve seen together. I think what keeps bringing me back is the people most of all. And just feeling like you want to be there for the people that have been there for you.” Elizabeth continued to help with training in the EMS fire department while pregnant with their twins.

The Giblins love serving Little Silver and being part of the generational community. In addition to his childhood, Peter and Elizabeth met in high school and have been sweethearts ever since. Elizabeth was inspired by Peter’s selfless dedication to his community and joined Little Silver EMS cadets in 2005 and quickly rose to the rank of Cadet Captain by 2006. She became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and CPR instructor while juggling a busy schedule still in high school. Their service in town brought many great friends and memories for the two. Now they hope to give that same experience for their children. Family has been the most rewarding part of their service to the community.

You don’t usually save a life with too many other people and it’s a unique bonding experience with the calls that we’ve been on and the things that we’ve seen together. I think what keeps bringing me back is the people most of all. And just feeling like you want to be there for the people that have been there for you.” Elizabeth continued to help with training in the EMS fire department while pregnant with their twins.

The Giblins love serving Little Silver and being part of the generational community. In addition to his childhood, Peter and Elizabeth met in high school and have been sweethearts ever since. Elizabeth was inspired by Peter’s selfless dedication to his community and joined Little Silver EMS cadets in 2005 and quickly rose to the rank of Cadet Captain by 2006. She became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and CPR instructor while juggling a busy schedule still in high school. Their service in town brought many great friends and memories for the two. Now they hope to give that same experience for their children. Family has been the most rewarding part of their service to the community.

am so privileged to kick off Hackensack Meridian Health Riverview Medical Center’s new expert contribution with Little Silver Neighbors. Each article we will be featuring stories about our team members who are also Little Silver residents as well as discussing health topics and hospital happenings. Riverview Medical Center has such a rich history within the community; for more than 90 years we have been providing the best care possible to our neighbors while growing through the decades.

Riverview got its earliest start during World War I on the Woodley Estate in Little Silver where the facility became a well-known hospital. The estate was sold in 1927 and renamed Red Bank Hospital after it was moved to a renovated boarding house on Union Street in Red Bank in 1928. The new hospital featured 29 beds, one operating room, a delivery suite, and facilities for six newborns.

In 1929, Red Bank Hospital was officially renamed Riverview Hospital. Throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, Riverview was in a constant state of construction and expansion. In 1957, a major fundraising campaign by the Women’s Auxiliary raised $1,170,000 to build a new wing.

The Women & Children’s Pavilion was redesigned in the 1990’s to create beautiful private maternity suites, many with a view of the Navesink River. The Riverview Rehabilitation Center was established and became Monmouth County’s only fully accredited comprehensive acute inpatient rehabilitation facility. Riverview’s Women’s Diagnostic Center was also created to offer state-of-the-art mammography, stereotactic

breast biopsy, ultrasound, and bone densitometry in one comfortable, easily accessible location.

The Booker Cancer Center began an affiliation with the renowned Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, which offers patients participation in more than 80 ongoing clinical investigational studies for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

From 2000-2010, Riverview saw the largest and most complex improvement—the New View of Riverview, which encompassed the construction of the K. Hovnanian Pavilion.

This project included the Alton A. Hovnanian Emergency Care Center and Critical Care Center, vastly improving the emergency room experience by providing more space, new emergency-certified physicians, physician assistants, and new technology.

Today, Riverview Medical Center provides a wide range of health services, most notably— oncology, OBGYN services, cardiovascular services, and behavioral health. The Booker Cancer Center at Riverview provides patients access to the full continuum of cancer care from diagnosis to treatment to home care.

In 2005, Riverview became home to the CyberKnife®, one of the most revolutionary radiosurgery treatments in the world, which offers new hope to patients with inoperable tumors and lesions. As part of the Booker Cancer Center, the CyberKnife has positioned Riverview Medical Center as a leader in cancer care, services, and resources in the region.

In 1997, Riverview Medical Center joined the Meridian Network which then merged with Hackensack University Medical Center in 2016

to form Hackensack Meridian Health. Innovation is truly in the DNA of this new network.

Hackensack Meridian Health is dedicated to creating a world where the highest quality care is human-centered, accessible, and affordable.

This past spring we started an exciting new project to expand and renovate our second floor inpatient unit. This new design features 23 private rooms taking full advantage of the river views with floor to ceiling windows. The unit size will increase from 8,000 to 18,000-squarefeet. The renovations will provide an oversized family waiting room and a centrally located nursing station with enhanced technology to maximize communication capabilities.

Riverview has been the recipient of numerous accolades and, while we are not doing this for the awards, it is always nice to be recognized for all the hard work our team members put in every day.

US News and World Report ranked Riverview the 9th best hospital in the New Jersey and the 22nd best in the New York Metropolitan area. The prestigious Leapfrog Group awarded Riverview with its sixth consecutive “A” safety rating and named it a top general hospital in New Jersey. We also came in third place in Soliant’s 2019 search for the Most Beautiful Hospital in America.

At Riverview Medical Center we are excited about what our future holds as we continue to grow and improve. By Jim Scanlon IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SEPTEMBER EVENING. Also, quite unusual. Our small-town community softball field was overrun by fans and reporters from all over the country. Not just sports reporters—gossip columnists, too. A steady roar rose from the crowd as if we were all riding on a runaway train.

Cameras flashed from every direction. Cardboard cutouts of my enlarged head and name bobbed up and down. I rapped my cleats with my lucky bat and glanced at my family behind the team bench. They waved and so did everyone else standing on that side of the field. All eyes were on me. “Could he do it?” they wondered. I rapped my cleats again and confirmed the count was three balls and two strikes with the umpire. He nodded.

I took a deep breath and fixed my eyes on the pitcher, Joey Diaz. He was snarling, determined to ruin everyone’s evening. It was then that I realized this moment belonged to Joey as much as it belonged to me. History was upon us and we would forever be remembered for what was about to happen. I dug a firm stance into the batter’s box and rose my bat to a ready position. Joey studied signs from his catcher. His only logical choice was to throw a fastball over the plate for a strike. Any trickery would increase the odds of ball four and produce a ‘what if’ that would haunt him forever. The spectators quieted as Joey began to wind-up. His body lurched forward, then backward, ultimately contorting himself into a miniature inverted catapult. In an instant, Joey’s historic underhand pitch was launched and it was coming at me fast.

The ball rocketed past the halfway mark of a life defining journey. It was clearly tracking inside. High and inside … as if targeted at my head.

Was Joey crazy? Or was this a curveball? I remained steady, waiting for the ball to reveal its true intentions. As I did, I thought about my life.

How lucky I was to have a loving wife and two healthy kids. And how lucky I was to have parents who cared as much as my parents. If the New York Times reporter had asked, I would have told them things were already perfect. There was no need for a question mark.

Joey’s high inside pitch was nearly upon me. I had a nanosecond to decide between bailing out or being struck in the head. And then it happened. The ball’s trajectory suddenly shifted downward, to the left. It was a curveball! I could see its spinning seams clear as day. Fortunately, I had remained in position to slap it into right field for a hit. And as I prepared to fulfill everyone’s desire for perfection, a calm fell over me. An overwhelming feeling of trust I had never felt before. I closed my eyes and waved the bat aimlessly at the ball, missing it by a mile. The umpire yelled, “Strike three. You’re out!” The crowd groaned and cursed. Joey's arms raised victorious and his team raced onto the field to celebrate. I stood at home plate unsure what to do. Family and teammates quickly surrounded me as I was peppered by reporter's questions about failure and disappointment.

Failure and disappointment, I thought? I gathered myself, pulling my loved ones in close. There was only one way to answer.

I was grateful. And to be grateful is always better than being perfect.

Mr. Perfect?

Time suddenly stood still.

This remarkable softball saga began in early spring when I got four straight hits in the first game of the season. And then five straight hits in game two. In the third game, I got another four consecutive hits and then was walked somewhat intentionally. And so it went, on and on, game after game. Our team was winless, but I hadn’t made an out. Not a ground out, not a fly out. And of course, not a strike out. A season-long perfect batting average was thought to be impossible. Especially, for a middle-aged, fastpitch softball player. Regardless, I carried perfection into this final game. And after getting three hits in my first three attempts of the evening, I stood at home plate with two outs in the last inning with nobody on base. Our team was down by eight runs and about to lose again. But it didn’t matter. A hit in this final at bat would send everyone into a frenzy. Including, my teammates.

Facebook posts were first to promote my encounter with perfection.

By mid- summer, nearly every social media app had helped to create a huge groundswell of excitement. People began stopping me on the street or waving at my work truck delivering fresh bread to regional supermarkets and convenience stores. When the flawless streak reached seventy-five hits in seventy-five at bats, the New York Times published a front-page article entitled ‘Mr. Perfect’ followed by a big question mark. A picture of me and my dad was featured. He had coached me as a kid and I guess with so much turmoil in the news, the editor wanted to promote a family ‘feel good’ story. My wife wasn’t enamored with all the attention. She was proud of me, but was also happy her and the kids weren’t pictured in the article.

I refocused on Joey’s pitch as it hurtled toward me. Hitting the ball safely into fair territory out of the other team’s reach was the task at hand. There was no doubt in my mind I would soon be a guest on late night talk shows and plastered on the cover of national magazines. Maybe even an endorsement deal? Believe it or not, I had been contacted by a few agents who promised to make me rich.

How lucky I was to have a loving wife and two healthy kids. And how lucky I was to have parents who cared as much as my parents. If the New York Times reporter had asked, I would have told them things were already perfect. There was no need for a question mark.

Joey’s high inside pitch was nearly upon me. I had a nanosecond to decide between bailing out or being struck in the head. And then it happened. The ball’s trajectory suddenly shifted downward, to the left. It was a curveball! I could see its spinning seams clear as day. Fortunately, I had remained in position to slap it into right field for a hit. And as I prepared to fulfill everyone’s desire for perfection, a calm fell over me. An overwhelming feeling of trust I had never felt before. I closed my eyes and waved the bat aimlessly at the ball, missing it by a mile. The umpire yelled, “Strike three. You’re out!” The crowd groaned and cursed. Joey's arms raised victorious and his team raced onto the field to celebrate. I stood at home plate unsure what to do. Family and teammates quickly surrounded me as I was peppered by reporter's questions about failure and disappointment.

Failure and disappointment, I thought? I gathered myself, pulling my loved ones in close. There was only one way to answer.

I was grateful. And to be grateful is always better than being perfect.

Mr. Perfect?

Time suddenly stood still.

This remarkable softball saga began in early spring when I got four straight hits in the first game of the season. And then five straight hits in game two. In the third game, I got another four consecutive hits and then was walked somewhat intentionally. And so it went, on and on, game after game. Our team was winless, but I hadn’t made an out. Not a ground out, not a fly out. And of course, not a strike out. A season-long perfect batting average was thought to be impossible. Especially, for a middle-aged, fastpitch softball player. Regardless, I carried perfection into this final game. And after getting three hits in my first three attempts of the evening, I stood at home plate with two outs in the last inning with nobody on base. Our team was down by eight runs and about to lose again. But it didn’t matter. A hit in this final at bat would send everyone into a frenzy. Including, my teammates.

Facebook posts were first to promote my encounter with perfection.

By mid- summer, nearly every social media app had helped to create a huge groundswell of excitement. People began stopping me on the street or waving at my work truck delivering fresh bread to regional supermarkets and convenience stores. When the flawless streak reached seventy-five hits in seventy-five at bats, the New York Times published a front-page article entitled ‘Mr. Perfect’ followed by a big question mark. A picture of me and my dad was featured. He had coached me as a kid and I guess with so much turmoil in the news, the editor wanted to promote a family ‘feel good’ story. My wife wasn’t enamored with all the attention. She was proud of me, but was also happy her and the kids weren’t pictured in the article.

I refocused on Joey’s pitch as it hurtled toward me. Hitting the ball safely into fair territory out of the other team’s reach was the task at hand. There was no doubt in my mind I would soon be a guest on late night talk shows and plastered on the cover of national magazines. Maybe even an endorsement deal? Believe it or not, I had been contacted by a few agents who promised to make me rich.

An Excerpt from My Old Friend B y J u s t i n C am p a n a

1 | MIKE | MAY 9, 2007 He resisted a couple times before finally giving in and letting the men push him into the car, slamming it behind him. Not like the cuffs could have done anything. All he was able to do was stare out the window. Everyone was watching. Bystanders, neighbors, him. This night ended not the way he thought. He thought he could have succeeded in getting both guys but he had to get away. And it ruined the rest of his life. So he would think. He just had to plan. No matter how long it took, he would get his revenge.

2 | PATRICK | JUNE 17, 2018 Jo sits by herself on the couch as I walk in. She reads to kill time on weekends when she’s not teaching and since Olivia is upstairs sleeping off her cold. So, a day like today is probably torture for her. I think to myself how days like this probably go by slow, but she’s most likely accustomed to it by now.

I sit next to her before giving her a kiss on the cheek. She responds by laying on my shoulder and asking how my lunch with Emmett went.

“Good,” I sigh. “He’s still expecting my final draft.”

“Did you tell him we have a sick child to care after?” she removes her head from me.

“I did.”

“And what did he say?” she smirks.

“What do you think?” I smirk back.

“Emmett,” she snorts. “Doesn’t care about anything. Only wants his authors to get things done around here.”

“It’s a big deal,” I defend, though I also agree. “It’s my fifth book that has an expected release date next year. So I’m under a time limit when it comes to that.”

“Twenty-nine-years-old and you’ve already written five books,” she smiles.

“It’s a big deal.”

She walks to the kitchen, expecting me to follow. “I know,” she laughs. “But that editor of yours can be a real pain in the neck.”

I chuckle. “That’s Emmett for you.”

“Top editor who with a stick up the rear.”

“So, how’s Olivia?” I change the subject.

“She’s good,” she starts chopping the vegetables for dinner tonight.

“She’s moaning about how she’s not going to make it.”

“God,” I sigh. “When a seven-year-old gets a cold, it’s as if the world is about to crumble.”

“Isn’t that how we all were when we were seven?” she looks at me, still laughing.

“To miss out on school? Yes.” I turn to the snack closet while she’s not looking and sneak some popcorn on the table.

“So,” she walks over to me and lays a small kiss on my forehead. “Do you have a release date?”

“I wish,” I snicker. “I can hardly find a title for it. I can hardly finish the next draft.”

“Oy vey,” she grabs a towel and begins cleaning the table before noticing the bag of popcorn. She gives me a grin. “Was this here before?”

I try so hard to hide my laughing. “No.”

Jo returns to chopping up the last of the vegetables before pouring them into the stove and picking up the bag before putting it back in the closet. When she comes back, she looks at me again, all red. “Do you want a movie night?” she asks, tying her hair into a ponytail.

“Sure,” I finally laugh. It was almost unbearable holding it in. It makes me happy to joke around with her. It fills me with nothing but pleasure, knowing how wonderful my life is right now. I have a successful career, a wonderful wife, a beautiful daughter, and everything that was bad about my life then is now gone. My life as a teenager was horrible, yes, but it’s been over ten years. It’s all in the past and I must leave it there. Every problem I’ve had is locked away and hasn’t followed me since. From what it seems, it can only get better.

Olivia comes downstairs after Jo calls out for dinner. Though seemingly fine, she walks dramatically before slouching in her chair.

“What’s for dinner?” she asks with a stuffy nose.

“Chicken and vegetables,” Jo sets down her plate.

“Yuck!” is all Olivia says before going back upstairs.

“Hang on, young lady,” I call out to her, hoping she responds.

She turns around, giving me an angry What do you want? look.

I gesture her to sit back down. “You need to eat.”

“No!” she grumbles.

“If you don’t eat,” I stand from my chair. “then you will not get better.”

“I don’t want to!” she crosses her arms at me while making a pout.

I do the same, giving some humor in the moment despite being a little annoyed right now.

She groans and sits back down.

“You’re going to enjoy your dinner,” I pour her vegetables into her plate. “And if you do, you can stay up late and watch a movie with us.”

“What are we watching?” her ears perk up.

I can tell the cold is gone by now and she can go back to school on Monday as opposed to her thinking that she could get the week off.

“Well,” Jo intervenes. “We were planning on watching A Quiet Place,” she gives me a stare.

I stare back, remembering everything. Before I can speak, Olivia is downing her dinner and agrees to a movie.

“I guess it will have to be a different movie,” I feign a smile. Jo sighs before finishing her dinner.

We end up watching Inside Out, which isn’t a bad movie, and probably better than what we thought Olivia wanted to watch. She really wants to see that stupid emoji movie that came out last year, but thankfully we haven’t yet. I don’t think I can handle that movie yet. Two ways of torture are slow killing and watching that movie.

It’s been a while since I saw a good kids movie, but this one is surprisingly touching towards adults as well. It’s also something I don’t want Olivia to turn into when she’s twelve, but she will eventually. It’s something I have to suck up with as a father.

Nothing wrong will come between Jo and I, though. ….To be continued.

MY FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK, Japan Inscape, was a combination of Haiku and photographs of a trip to Japan in 2016. It features special aesthetic highlights that seem unique to Japan. The next book I have written is about transitions in life.

After publishing, Japan Inscape, I looked at a collection of many Haiku, written over about ten years. I realized that the common theme in many poems was coping with transitions or change. The photos and poems are “poured” onto and into each other. Transitions, not just relevant to the stages of my personal experience as a surgeon, but transitions in nature and time and distance are featured. The transitions of seasons are frequently referenced as well as contrasts of young and old. The inevitable cycles show the impermanence and aging of all forms of life. The photos taken all over the world range from stark realities to abstract glimpses.

There are five representative photographs and Haiku that hopefully resonate and produce some day dreaming moments. Try to create your own explanation of the Haiku and photographs, before you read mine.
