Happy Spring Little Silver, Our May issue has arrived, and we can almost see summer on the horizon!! In the month of May there is so much to celebrate... Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and best of all the warmer weather making more of an appearance. If April showers bring May flowers, then we are in for a beautiful month of May!! Personally this is one of my favorite times of year, and I am looking forward to sharing some of the outstanding stories & happenings around town with you our incredible readers! Our May issue has some news from RBR, one piece featuring students being honored for academic achievement. The Little Silver Neighbors calendar for May is full of great events and holidays - you won’t want to miss out on the fun! There is a new outstanding resident nomination, written to honor a beloved person in the community affectionately known as Bill the Crossing Guard. Keep an eye out as well for some great content by one of our expert contributors at Gannon Holsey. This May issue has a special family whom I would like to thank personally. At the Annual Education Foundation of Little Silver fundraiser this year, the magazine’s business sponsors & team donated the Front Cover/ Family Feature of the May edition to help fundraise for the EFLS. John Blumberger and his family came in with the winning bid, and we couldn’t have be happier to have them join us as the May issue cover family. So on behalf of myself, the L.S.N. team, and all of our sponsoring businesses - We thank you for your generous contribution to the EFLS!! As always please keep your Little Silver Neighbors Magazine in mind if you have something you would like to share with your community! We are always looking to grow and work closely with you and the community. Your continued support makes this magazine what it is; we are grateful for you our reader! Happy Mother’s Day from Little Silver Neighbors to all the wonderful Moms of Little Silver!! Let’s all make sure to spoil our Moms, after all their dedication and love made us who we are today. Gratefully yours, Ryan Keating Publisher

The Blumberger Family Finding Balance at Work and at Home By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story Tethered by the tidal pulls of the beach, growing up along the Jersey Shore holds an invisible strength that calls you back home for the summer. Like the beautiful collaboration of sand and sea, the partnership of John and Kristen Blumberger held strong time and again, guided by the beach and fate’s hand. The push and pull of their union began during a summer between college semesters. John was returning to Bucknell University and Kristen to Tulane University but they both belonged to the Monmouth Beach, Bath and Tennis Club. As the years continued, the two were carried out to different cities but always found their way back to the surface of the Jersey Shore. More than a decade passed before they found themselves in the same city and John seized the opportunity to take Kristen on a 4

date. Two years later they were married at the Rumson Country Club Boat House. Despite his origins in finance and an MBA from Fordham University, John pursued a different career path. The motivation behind his enrollment at the Hunter College Physical Therapy School reflected John as a person. “[I] love working with [my] hands and helping people rehabilitate from injuries or surgery,” explained John. He took this positive mentality and his outpatient physical therapy experience to manifest the dream of opening his own practice. TideWatch Physical Therapy welcomed patients with open arms in September 2017. “It’s the most rewarding professional experience I’ve Little Silver Neighbors

had to date and the best part of it is being in control of my destiny,” said John. John is highly respected in the outpatient physical therapy world.

Hospital in NYC, she plunged into a two-year post-graduate residency in Endodontics at NYU in 2005.

TideWatch Physical Therapy presents an avenue for him to incorporate all the professional tasks he enjoys. He provides treatments for patients, markets to doctors and local residents, and steps behind the curtain to manage a successful business. John’s strengths and passion in the workplace is not only reflected but paralleled by his wife Kristen.

While most people fear the dreaded root canal, for Kristen it was a passion. She has racked up more than 30,000 successful root canals and has become an expert in treating dental infections. Named a top dentist in her field, her specialties are utilized at Chapel Hill Dental Arts in Red Bank and Lincroft Dental Village in Lincroft.

Kristen pursued another health-conscious career in the field of dentistry, earning a degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. In addition to her general practice residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt

Even out of the offices there is nothing but smiles for the Blumberger family which has grown from two to five. They moved to Little Silver, Kristen’s hometown, to raise Jack, Luke and Dylan. John and Kristen

operate like two pillars of strength in regard to their family. Their decisions are made as a united front. Marital support is important for John and Kristen. “The common ground in [our] marriage is really giving 100 percent support if something is important to one of [us],” said John. Each day is a collaboration of work and play: office schedules, chauffeuring the boys to activities, running errands, and cooking meals. Sports are vital for the Blumberger family. John shared his love for skiing and tennis with Kristen and the boys. “The great thing about these sports are that they are life-long and a great way to spend time with the whole family,” said John. Jack and Luke regularly participate in the seasonal sports like soccer, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse. John is a regular Little Silver recreational coach for his sons' teams. Dylan, attending pre-school, holds the title of family baby and finds his days occupied endlessly with puzzles, trucks and reading books. However, he is also eager to run alongside and keep step with his brothers. Sunday family dinners are handson quite literally with games of touch-football in the yard with John, the boys and their uncle. The family operates as a community while advocating independence. John and Kristen try to display for their children that a balancing act of career and family is achievable. It is in the differences of each other that they find a commonality: compassion. While perseverance leads them along their professional journeys, it is their compassion for life that guides their homestead. Little Silver was the perfect combination of small town feel and proximity to the beach. The cyclical shores brought John and Kristen together and now beckoned them back to create their home. Family members live close, if not in town, gravitating towards this heartwarming community. The Blumbergers’ success relates to that strong simplicity of the beach. Hard work and determination is rewarding and creates something quite beautiful. Kindness carries across oceans and touches everything. And spending time with family and friends is like spending time in the sun: nothing but warmth and bright smiles. For one-on-one Physical Therapy sessions with John at TideWatch Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury call (732) 204-7741. For root canals with Kristen, even if you go to another general dentist, call Chapel Hill Dental Arts in Red Bank (732) 345-8460 or Lincroft Dental Village in Lincroft (732) 842-5005.

OUTSTANDING RESIDENT

William “Bill The Crossing Guard” Kennelly: A Grandfather for All Little Silver Children By Allison Merchant

William Kennelly is no stranger to the Little Silver Community. Affectionately known as Bill the Crossing Guard, he has served as a protector of the children across Point Road for 15 years. He was nominated for our Outstanding Resident by Jennifer Borenius. “Bill is a treasure” she said. “He lovingly tends the corner of Point Road and Seven Bridges with strict traffic management and control! He has been [one of ] our stellar crossing guard[s] for at least a decade and has crossed all of my four children at our Point Road Elementary School, as well as countless others that live on the east side of Point Road and the many parents who choose to park on this side for pick up.” “The kids are great, they really are,” said Kennelly. “I’m a grandfather so I know. And the little ones, they always smile and they don’t have any teeth. So that’s the best.”

Kennelly retired from his job with Little Silver Electric in 2004 and was encouraged to become a crossing guard by the chief of police at the time, Shannon Giblin. Each memory of how he got his start is relayed with a light-hearted chuckle. Kennelly’s warmth and compassion are shown with his jovial recollection of the children he sees daily. His favorite reminiscence is of this family with two boys where one is determined to ride his bike to school. “It could be two degrees out but if he decides to ride his bike up, he’ll ride his bike [to school],” recalled Kennelly, “And I’ll say ‘Aren’t your hands cold?’ And he’ll say, ‘Oh yeah!’” Always ready with a smile and a laugh, Kennelly still takes his duties very seriously. His advice to those under his care is “Cross when I tell you to,” said Kennelly chuckling lightly. He explains that there are the ‘darters’ who tend to run across the minute the crossing guards walk out and that is very dangerous. “He engages, encourages and loves all of the children of this town and takes care of them like a surrogate grandfather,” said Borenius, “We are blessed to have him!” Thank you Bill Kennelly! EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Being Neighborly with Real Estate By Patricia G. Holsey Real estate firms come in all sizes. A local real estate office is going to have a much more intimate understanding of the market in your town than, say, a larger firm that is trying to cover a larger geographic area. Gannon Holsey is more than a real estate office on Silverside Avenue. We are your neighbors who use the same dry cleaners and shops at the same local grocer as you.

We take several steps further in that we do the upfront homework to understand the seller's goals and what a likely prospective purchaser profile would look like to enhance our marketing to that demographic. With that level of familiarity, that real estate firm is better positioned to know the market and where to find the right prospective sellers and buyers for property.

Our headquarters is in Little Silver and we focus on that market and five other adjacent communities (Eatontown, Oceanport, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Beach and West Long Branch). With the primary focus on this part of eastern Monmouth County, we believe we deliver the best experience for our customers. By focusing on unique aspects of each place as well as the common lifestyle experience of each we are able to best represent the interests of both sellers and buyers.

Technology has been the great equalizer for both sellers and buyers, in terms of access to information about the local market. The upside is that it has made many of the tasks associated with real estate much more efficient. The disadvantages are that inaccurate information can be accepted too readily without comparing it with hard market data.

We'd rather be nine people's favorite realtor than 500 people's ninth favorite realtor. Having that level of intimacy with the community is critical especially if you are trying to present the best and positive aspects of the property within that community. Although being personable and intimate is certainly one of the side benefits of working with Gannon Holsey; we believe our brand is more centered on how well we solve the challenges of marketing properties in communities we serve. Anyone can put a listing up for sale on the local Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and hope for the best that someone finds it interesting enough to come take a look.

Additionally, it has given some false confidence about their ability to market properties on their own. Many "For Sale By Owner (FSBO's)" properties end up getting marketed by firms like Gannon Holsey simply because their individual attempts at marketing are limited and there is an expectation by prospective buyers that they will pay less for the property. Many FSBO owners also get frustrated that many unqualified buyers will show up at any time to gain access to their homes. When a real estate professional is involved, we take care of many of these types of issues including the proper marketing of the property all the way to qualifying prospects. Where we really pride ourselves is in utilizing all the marketing tools that we have access to and provide a better real estate marketing experience. It’s not just about being smart but being Gannon Holsey market smart.

Independent real estate company serving commercial and residential customers in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

ATHLETICS

The Bill Parcells of Girls’ Basketball By Allison Merchant

providing basketball instruction worldwide. They rightfully dubbed Truhan as the “Bill Parcells of Girls’ Basketball”. He helped a team that was convinced that their season would be a period of rebuilding and rode with them all the way to the State Section Semifinals. Junior Megan Murray added, “He took a team that no one ever thought would be good and helped us believe in ourselves, and he motivated us to work hard and beat teams that he knew we could.” Truhan credits this award as team award, acknowledging the group efforts of this season. “I felt welcome from the day I walked into the gym, from administration and other coaches and teachers,” he said. “It was a great start and hopefully we will build upon it and go further next year. I really view this as a team award because they did all the work.”

In his very first year at RBR, in what should have been a rebuilding year, RBR’s Coach John Truhan is pictured with his only senior on this year’s team Bridget Tobin. He was recently honored by the Hoops Group as New Jersey’s Girls’ High School Basketball’s Coach of the Year.

Change usually calls for a period of adjustment. Whether it is finally cleaning out that closet, battling pollen-related allergies or sending your child off to college, change requires time to get used to. This year, the RBR girls’ basketball team underwent a great deal of change. It was the season following their ten-year turn around, the graduation of seven senior players and a heartfelt farewell to their coach James Young. The girls were introduced to their new coach just two weeks prior to the season.

These young women persevered by equaling their previous record of 17 and 12. Truhan guided them and watched approvingly each time as they laced up their Cinderella sneakers.

John Truhan came in with a positive attitude and a teambuilding mindset. He understood the adversaries these girls expected to face following their previous season. With heart, determination and strong work ethic, he strove to produce a team capable of a solid foundation. What he found was a group of young women who not only rose to the challenge but overcame it with victory. Graduating senior Bridget Tobin stated of her coach, “He is the best. This year we weren’t expected to do much with graduating seven seniors. As a junior I did not get much experience. He grounded us with a work ethic and we went into the gym every day and worked hard. The mindset changed from who was going to score and we began working together better to win. His coaching and leadership made the game easier and it was awesome.” Truhan was named by the international basketball leaders Hoop Group as 2018 Coach of the Year. The organization established in 1963, has grown from their mission from 14

Begin Composting this Spring By Tori S. Bevens

C

ompost is an easy, affordable way to add nutrient-rich fuel to your plants. Soil will be restored and plants will flourish with this simple addition to your garden. Compost is made of decomposing organic material and can be made right in your own backyard with things right at your fingertips. After that, all you need is air, a small space, organic waste (food scraps, garden material, etc.), time and a little energy to begin your compost pile. After that, nature will take over almost fully. Fruit and vegetable scraps will be the primary source of most people’s compost. Eggshells, coffee grounds and select few other foods can be tossed in. Yard waste, such as grass clippings, leaves, plant trimmings, etc., can also be put in. Meat, fish and bones should not be composted because they are likely to attract unwanted animal visitors and weeds. The peels, seeds, ends, cores, etc. of that salad you just made are the perfect material for rich compost. You will find especially in hot weather that the pile heats up and decomposition happens quicker than when temperatures are cooler. Turning your pile over will ensure that everything, even the newest additions to the pile, have a chance to heat up and begin breaking down. The richest compost will always be at the bottom and will be dark in color and feel like crumbly soil. When done correctly, a compost pile should not have a strong scent.

Some tips as you begin: 1.

Begin your pile somewhere out of the way but not too far from the garden.

2.

Add to the pile often.

3.

Take time to turn the pile every few weeks, especially when it is hot.

4.

Have a bowl or bucket readily available in the kitchen to put food scraps in as you cook and eat throughout the day.

5.

The smaller the waste pieces are, the faster they will decompose. Consider breaking down large pieces before adding them to the pile.

6.

If your area is lacking rain, consider watering your compost every once in a while to maintain moisture.

Choosing to build a pen for your compost is a great way to keep it contained and also covered if that is desirable. There are many simple plans online for building a compost area. Otherwise, there are plenty of compost tumblers on the market. A tumbler can be kept almost anywhere outside, compost is added through a door and the compost is “turned by rotating the tumbler around. This spring consider recycling, reducing and reusing by adding composting to your athome routine. The environmental benefits far outweigh the energy needed to get and keep it going!

Is Breaking Up with Facebook Hard to Do?

restaurant & bar

By Emma Riehl With all the negative press about Facebook, people are asking, “What’s the alternative?” While some followers will never leave Facebook, others are looking for a place to go. Most ask, “If I leave, where do I go and will my friends come with me?” We all know the stories of networks such as Instagram that became overnight sensations. However, most social networks are built by early adopters who bring their friends along with them, and then grow slowly over time. This creates a personalized vibe and makes the space even more attractive. Take Nextdoor for example, the social network devoted to neighbor-to-neighbor communication in a tight-knit geographical area. Nextdoor is not a Facebook alternative based on its exclusive appeal to neighborhoods, but it serves as a solid metaphor for growth. Nextdoor launched in 2010. By social network standards, Nextdoor grew incredibly slowly. Despite that, Nextdoor became one of the few tech companies to be valued at $1 billion without earning any revenue because the number of people networking on the platform eventually added up, one neighbor at a time. Great movements develop over time because a social network’s longevity and profitability depend on worthwhile, trusting relationships between its users and the network itself. Recently, Myopolis, a very viable alternative to Facebook, subtly and quietly opened their doors offering Citizens (like “friends”) the chance to become pioneers of their community and build trust amongst one another. Citizens sound off on topics they care about and are heard by others who care about the same topics. The Leaderboard is a popular component because it shows the leader in each category at the Local, State and National level. Early adopters will be at the forefront of the latest social movement. The problems Facebook experienced will likely be void because it is centered on the user’s ability to filter out what they do and do not want to see and read. A cool bonus is that the original founder of every town in North America will be noted in Myopolis records as the Founder. Now is the time to be a BIG fish in a smaller pond until Myopolis is an ocean. At that point, we will see if Myopolis can stay ahead of the problems Facebook faces today. One can hope.
