Happy summer! I am very excited to welcome you to the June edition of Little Silver Neighbors! June is one of my favorite months of the year, it’s the month that always feels like the official start of summer and it also happens to be my birthday month. On behalf of the magazine I would like to say Happy Birthday to all the other June babies around town! In this edition we have the outstanding Genkinger family presented on our cover. They share their story with us in the resident feature. Also this issue contains some awesome new content sections that I am happy to share with you – our wonderful readers. Ann Connell at St. John’s Nursery School was kind enough to share with us some photos from the Nursery School, so don’t miss out seeing the smiling faces of Little Silver’s next generation! Speaking of the next generation and schools, our June issue will feature some important information from the EFLS regarding the grants for the new school year, an announcement from the Little Silver PTO about their 5K, and some great updates with the students of RBR. Recently I sat down with some members of the Little Silver Business and Professionals Association, and they kindly shared with me some great things in the works. So keep an eye out in future issues, but in the meantime we have some news about a benefit for the Monmouth Day Care Center held by the LSBPA. This issue also features a new column from one of our Featured Family celebrities, Billie Crawford-McNally! For you readers who enjoy a sunny day outside with your friends and family, I highly recommend taking a moment to read her column. A big thank you goes out to our awesome residents, I am humbled regularly being witness to or hearing about the members of this community and their willingness to work for the benefit of their neighbors. Little Silver is absolutely a special place and I feel very fortunate to be able to take part in this community through Little Silver Neighbors. Thank you as well to all of our sponsoring businesses, whom without we could not be able to bring our readers so much local community content. Please send in any local news, stories, or just a good idea/hello to your community publication – we always are here to be of service! Now get outside and enjoy some of the sweet Monmouth County sunshine everyone! I hope to have the opportunity to meet/speak with all of our amazing readers at Little Silver Day this month! RESIDENT FEATURE

The Genkinger Family Laughing and Loving Life By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story In June 1967, the notion of love being a universally satisfying necessity aired on live global television Our World. The Beatles performed “All You Need Is Love” and jumpstarted a summer of love. Fifty years later, Little Silver Neighbors is honored to kick off summer 2018 with the Genkinger Family – a family who loves to laugh, dance and live life to the fullest. “Love every day as if it were your last,” said Leigh Genkinger. “As a family we love making each other laugh. Every single one of us has their own sense of humor which keeps us constantly laughing.” 4

September 5 will mark the 10th anniversary for Leigh and Tom. They had met in passing on the Path train to New York City almost 20 years ago, an encounter that stayed vivid in Tom’s memory. Time passed, and careers evolved as Leigh pursued her trade with places like New York & Company and Aeropostale while Tom was a financer at Prudential. Soon enough, they crossed paths again and vacationed with friends at Tom’s beach house in Point Pleasant. Their love for the beach and for laughter was mutual, marking the beginning of a new journey together.

RESIDENT FEATURE

“We love being at the beach, it is one of the biggest reasons we moved to Little Silver,” Leigh said. The family is an avid member of the SurfRider Beach Club in Sea Bright. Currently residing on Cross Street, the Genkingers found their wonderful home by chance and a little guidance by fate. They had been visiting friends and Leigh’s brother, another resident of Little Silver when the topic of real estate arose. Within minutes they were viewing their future home on Cross Street after a quick phone call to Stacie Bender, a friend of Leigh’s sister-in-law. “From the block parties, to Halloween, to the Christmas Eve Santa visits, to the impromptu summer BBQ’s, this neighborhood really has all you could ever want,” Leigh said. “And the proximity to both Markham and Sickles for the parks make it a location that you can’t refuse.” Nearly two years living in Little Silver and the Genkingers have not looked back. They have three children, each enrolled in schools within the community. Lexie attends second grade at Point Road School with much enthusiasm for learning. In addition, she is an active dancer and gymnast. She already competes many weekends for Kick Dance Studios in Rumson as well as for the gymnastic team at Aerials. In the middle is Gracie who is a force to be reckoned with. A kindergartener at Point Road, she joins her sister with gymnastics at Aerials. Lastly is Cooper, a playful boy of three who attends St. John’s preschool. His interests currently remain in motion particularly with trains, planes and cars.

RESIDENT FEATURE CONTINUED

“We honestly don’t travel much in the summer because we literally live at the beach. Why travel when you have the best place in the world at your front door?” she said.

In a summer where change was imminent, John Lennon declared that “Love is all you need.”This summer, change is embraced while tradition is valued. This balance is reflected with Little Silver Neighbors’ June family.

This past Spring Break provided an exception when the family of five drove straight through the night with another Little Silver family to Amelia Island, Florida. The time there allowed the Genkingers to soak up sun in preparation for another beach-filled summer that approaches this month.

“We sincerely LOVE Little Silver,” Leigh said. “We love being a part of the community and we are thankful that we were welcomed with open arms.” Be sure to visit Leigh’s website www.orderleighhome.com to view the portfolio of all the wonderful work her business has done.

Leigh cherishes her ability to be a stay-at-home mom while Tom currently works at ING/Voya as a Vice President Senior equity trader for their investment management platform. Using her management skills from her corporate ladder climbing days, Leigh began a new journey in her career. “This year, I began my own business and it has been a total dream. Orderleigh Home is a professional home organization business, that allows me to service clients in my own community,” Leigh said. Orderleigh Home advertises as an operation that creates both balance and design. Balance appears to be a strong influence in the Genkingers’ home. Humor and happiness go hand in hand. “I think if we had a family motto it would be something like ‘Dance like no one is watching’,” Leigh admitted. “Some of our best times together are our nightly dance parties. It allows for us to all act silly together and exhaust all our energy at the end of the day.” Generating smiles is as a vital as the Vitamin D absorbed from the summer sun. Whether you find them cheering in the stands for Kick Dance Studios competitions, at the SurfRider Beach Club, strolling through Sickles Park, or enjoying the neighborhood camaraderie on Cross Street, the Genkingers are full of laughter and smiles.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

EFLS – A Foundation for the Future By Allison Merchant Nelson Mandela once stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon in which you can change the world.” Educational skills extend beyond classrooms and cubicle desks, reaching from individual minds to bridge unity. In 1995, parents of Little Silver recognized the growing need for a strong educated youth for a prosperous future. Change was coming in waves: economy, democracy, and technology. Together individuals created the Educational Foundation of Little Silver (EFLS) to generate funding for technological enrichment within Point Road School and Markham Place School. Little Silver Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Kossack illuminates on the necessity of organizations like EFLS and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). “Over the course of several years, I have been preparing the Little Silver Board of Education and the community for the fiscal cliff that is upon us,” Dr. Kossack said. “This year, the district realized the sad reality that we needed to eliminate positions (administrative, teaching staff, support staff ) because the district is no longer able to sustain our budget. The Education Foundation of Little Silver provides much needed technology that would not be realized without their support.” Tracey Wetmore, current president of EFLS, explained the importance of the organization for the community. “I think it’s being competitive with our peer schools, who may get more state funding than we do,” said Wetmore. “It also helps give kids access to educational tools that are beyond reach.” The funding has evolved as the needs have changed. For example, the most common requests are for smartboards or more recently JTouches, an interactive iPad for the classroom. This is advocated in response to the increase in use of digital programs in a learning setting. An example would be Spelling City, a digital program where the children can input their spelling lists to play games and take practice tests. “There are a lot of digital technology resources now. We practiced our math fractions by flashcards, now they play iXL or iReady. iReady has a reading and a math component. With the JTouch they can use both,” Wetmore said. Currently the Little Silver school district has a one-to-one ratio of students to Chromebooks for students in grades 1-8. “This could not have been accomplished without the support of the EFLS and community at large,” Dr. Kossack said.

Just like any other technological devices, there is the question of maintenance. EFLS has been requested to support the one-to-one Chromebooks initiative replacements as the years progress. The advantages of these devices as well as other technology are exponential in the classroom. “The use of technological devices by this generation is simply a tool used to communicate, explore and engage in their world, and we are proud of the various ways in which staff integrates technology into the curriculum. The Administrative Team created [a] One-to-One Wonderful video to help educate the community at large about the need for this technology,” Dr. Kossack said. See link to video at the bottom of this article. The hard work of EFLS is seen in both Point Road School (PRS) and Markham Place School (MPS). Principal Pamela Albert-Devine of PRS has seen improvements in the educational settings with added technology. “Through their fundraising efforts the EFLS has been able to provide state of the art technology to both students and teachers to assist us in providing problembased learning experiences which encourage students to explore real-world problems, to develop cross-curricular skills and work collaboratively in order to prepare them for their future educational experiences,” Albert-Devine said. To raise money for these tools, EFLS hosts each year a large fundraising event with an auction. This year the organization braved one of the many Nor’easter storms and hosted a wonderful evening at the Berkley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park on March 2. Despite the weather deterrence, people were able to participate in the auction if they were not able to make the event. “The nice thing is we used BidPal, which has been rebranded to OneCause,” she said. “It’s a mobile bidding device and what we do as part of the auction is that we input all of our auction prizes.” Many of the auction prizes included teacher experiences, children’s art décor, Superbowl 2019 tickets, Live With Ryan and Kelly tickets, saturday morning errands packages like local dry cleaners, and a birthday party hosted at the local firehouse. EFLS raised approximately $106,000 at the fundraiser. Many Little Silver small businesses supported EFLS through sponsorship or donating auction items. Wetmore explained the importance of accessing the community at large in contrast to only the small percentage who attend school. She hopes to help individuals understand where they’re taxes go and why. Creating a healthy line of communication is vital for the success of EFLS.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

The purpose of EFLS “is to enrich and support technology and other educational programs for students in the Little Silver School district as well as residents of the Little Silver community (ELFS.org).” Principal Eric Platt of MPS reflects on this message for the community as well as the schools. “The mission shows me that this district is blessed to have parents and community members who are committed to providing all the children of Little Silver with the best possible education,” Platt said. “They are always striving to help keep this district at the head of the pack.” Communication between the schools and EFLS is one of the many strengths of the foundation. “I would personally characterize the relationship between the EFLS and Markham Place as extremely collaborative,” Platt said. “They understand the vision and direction the school is headed, and they work hard to collaborate on how best to support that while staying true to their mission.” The needs of the children and the schools are always put first, prioritizing a truly modern learning experience for our future leaders. Time and technology is in a constant state of motion and therefore so must be educational practices to maintain progress. “The EFLS is and has been, for many years, very supportive of both of the schools in the district,” Albert-Devine said. “They have provided both individual/grade level grants to teachers as well as whole grade level donations for items such as Chromebooks and SmartBoards/JTouch Interactive Boards. In these difficult economic times, technology has remained a high priority for our district and we rely on the support of the EFLS to help us keep up with the ever-changing world of technology.” Dr. Kossack acknowledges the value of having strong supportive organizations like EFLS and the PTO and community of dedicated residents. “I am incredibly proud of the quality of our school district. That speaks volumes about the hardworking administrators, teachers and support staff that are dedicated to the success of our students,” Dr. Kossack explained.

“I believe that a strong school system benefits the community at large, not solely those families that have school-age children,” Dr. Kossack said. The Little Silver community values the importance of education, but unity is equally imperative. “I think our partnership to help kids be the best versions of themselves, and in turn the best citizens of this world is of top priority. These kids are our future and together we can help them be responsible, contributing adults in our community,” Wetmore said. “This is the time in students’ lives that you’re making an impression on them. The habits and the values that they’re learning now are those what will ultimately carry them through their lives,” she added.

EDUCATION

New Technology Approved for 2018-2019 School Year By Allison Merchant The executive board of EFLS will be supporting Little Silver School District’s One-to-One Chromebook initiative. "The district has reached a point where every student 1st grade through 8th grade has their own device. This grant would help the administration establish a predictable cycle of purchasing as these chrome books have a life span of about 3-4 years. The chrome books are an integral part of daily instruction. They span a plethora of areas including, but not limited to: allowing students to work collaboratively on GoogleDocs, allowing teachers to facilitate immediate, meaningful feedback, allowing shy students the opportunity to have a voice, and perhaps most importantly, it provides students with the skills needed for their futures." Three additional Chromebooks will be dontated to the Little Silver Library in lieu of students that utilize the facility after school hours as well as the tutor programs held at the library. To help progress the STEM program at Point Road School with fun technology, EFLS has approved a Wonder Mat and “Let’s Makey Makey”. Both items were requested by a PRS teacher, Mrs. Whittle.

Lastly, a JTouch Board has been approved for a middle school teacher. These are relatively new to the technology department and serve as an advanced replacement for the SmartBoard. It is a large, interactive monitor that can be operated with the viewing and writing aspect of a SmartBoard but also a touch component similar to an iPad. It provides a more inclusive and interactive environment for students to learn presented material.

OUR PRIMARY SERVICES ARE CHIROPRACTIC AND NUTRITION Chiropractic Care • Nutrition • Response Testing Spinal Decompression • Panic and Anxiety Relief • DioWave Hot/Cold Laser Food Sensitivity/Inflammation Testing • Weight Loss/Cleansing

Wonder Mat is an accessory that collaborates with Dash Robots. The Dash Robots are already in place with the students. To operate, students code the robot to meet different challenges: sing, throw a ping pong ball, etc. “Let’s Makey Makey” is a modern invention kit. It allows students to transform everyday objects into touch pads linked with the internet. The range of the kit extends from beginner to expert, promoting art and engineering. EFLS also approved several teachers to receive SurfacePros. These handheld laptop-like devices coordinate with existing SmartBoards in classrooms. The technology assists teachers in meeting the needs of diverse learners, with the ability to work from the preschool level throughout the upper grades. It functions like a laptop but advocates the resourcefulness of a tablet. Teachers are able to utilize digital programs including AlphaMatch for letter recognition while connecting to existing programs being used in the district like I-Ready, Google Classroom, IXL and others. These are handheld "laptops" that work with the SmartBoards already in the classroom. The Surface Pro helps teachers meet the needs of diverse learners. The Surface Pro can be used from preschool through our upper grades. It has all the functions of a laptop but the versatility of a tablet. Teachers can use digital programs like AlphaMatch to help our youngest learners with their letter recognition. It is also compatible with technology we use throughout the district like.

GREENWAYS & WATERWAYS

A Walk in the Woods By Billie Crawford-McNally There so many secret, and not so secret pathways and waterways accessible just outside of our door steps. We live in a town, a county and a country of unrivaled beauty waiting to be discovered. In the next few months I want to introduce you to a few of my favorites hikes and kayaking spots. I hope you share them with your family as I have shared them with mine. Little Silver has a collection of greenways, properties that were donated over the years and are maintained by volunteer's and town workers. I like to start at The Nature Path on Prospect Avenue and wind my way through to Willow Avenue. This section of the path is not strenuous, it’s clearly marked and perfect for dogs and children. The elevated wooden boardwalk affords a scenic view of the environment. Great care was taken to assure the natural habitat is undisturbed. There's a little bridge over the brackish water and we have seen sizable Koi here on occasions. The dirt path can be an ankle turner, so walk with care. It's my hope a local scout takes this on as an Eagle project. Hint! Hint! The paths were badly damaged by Sandy and there were some mammoth trees overturned by what must have been tornado strength winds, but these fallen titans only add awe and beauty to the woods. There are three paths which join together, and end at Willow Avenue The second part of this trek requires crossing the street, turning left and going over the tiny bridge and turning right. This is an unmarked public accessed greenway that follows a little stream at the edge of private property. This path is an unexpected surprise. It’s short but lush, keep an ear out for chirping frogs. This greenway leads to Branch Avenue, make your way to the crosswalk and head down South Sunnycrest, then continue to the end of the road. Here you’ll find the entrance to the Creekside Adventure Trail, a wonderful place to while away the afternoon while building a fairie house.

I’ll readily admit this is one of my favorite short walks, especially in the spring. The quality of the light coming through bright green leaves as they unfurl from a long winters nap, creates an otherworldliness that makes the woods seem magical. There is a myriad of paths to take and no possible way to get lost. There are creeks to cross and treasures to find. I also have a bit of a personal story here. One of the bridges was fashioned from a ramp my sisters and I donated from my parents' house. The paths are well maintained and offer a few outcomes, one is White Avenue and the other is Woodland. Take note of the signage, they were made by former Markham students. There's never a bad of time of year to venture out on the paths. They're usually clear of debris, and even when they are not that can be the adventure. These paths are very suitable for children and a gentle meander. Wear your mucking boots during the rains as they can get boggy but again that is part of the fun, especially for the kids. The tree top canopy keeps the paths cool and there always seems to be a breeze, even on the balmiest of summer days. Bring a bag to collect debris. Next month I’ll introduce you to two of my favorite places to go fossilling. Get out your spades and buckets and get ready to find sharks teeth, arrow heads and 73-million-year-old oyster shell. Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our April 2018 issue Family Feature! For advice from an avid explorer, look for her monthly column Greenways and Waterways in upcoming issues to find more adventures in Little Silver and the beautiful world around it. She recently published her novel The Grove found on Amazon. Visit her Facebook at www.facebook.com/billiecrawfordmcnally.

EDUCATION

Senior Abby Decker Transforms from a Buccaneer to Greyhound By Allison Merchant RBR’s Senior Abby Decker, Shrewsbury, served up a solid ace this season with her biggest match yet: college. The tennis star athlete will be playing next year in the Patriot League for Loyola University. Located in Maryland where the university advocates “Strong Truths Well Lived”, Decker was convinced by her meeting with Loyola’s coach Rick McClure. “Meeting Loyola coach Rick McClure was a big part of my decision,” Decker explained. “He was so nice and helpful; I just wanted to play for him. Also, I like the idea of being in the Patriot League which will allow me to play Division One Tennis with emphasis first on my academics.” Decker will be studying business at Loyola. She is a member of the National Honor Society and received both an academic and athletic scholarship to Loyola. Her hard work is reflected on and off the court. Decker has been nominated to the first team all shore for the past three years. She also was the recipient of USTA’s Laurence Miller Sportsmanship award. Decker’s Coach Krishna Kanuga states of his star player, “I am extremely proud of Abby who works extremely hard on and off the court. Her will to win is second to none. She’s the full package, extremely athletic and mentally very strong. She has a fantastic foundation and her technique is very good, upon which she will build at the next level. It is going to be sad not seeing her on the court next year but I can’t wait to see her play at Loyola.”

Much Ado for RBR’s Shea Grant By Allison Merchant Without him, we wouldn’t have eyeball, cold-blooded, new-fangled, and swagger. Thanks to his works, we have endless dramatic quotes about starcrossed lovers, existentialism, and the approach of something wicked. William Shakespeare has definitely helped shaped the progress of the English language. March 10, Brookdale Community College hosted the regional English Speaking Union (ESU) Shakespeare Competition. “The ESU celebrates English as a shared language to foster global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural opportunities for students, educators, and members (https://www.esuus.org).” Red Bank Regional student Shea Grant, Little Silver, placed second in the English Speaking Union (ESU) Shakespeare Competition. Grant, a drama major in RBR’s Visual and Performing Art Program, took the second position the year before as well. She will represent the ESU in the national competition should the first-place winner, Devlin Stark of Red Bank Catholic, not be able to fulfill that function. For her competition performance role, Grant portrayed Portia’s dialogue in a scene from Julius Caesar. “I most enjoy this competition, having done it twice already,” Grant said. “Everyone is really talented and prepared and there is a true appreciation for the language.”

Little Silver Neighbors would like to wish Abby the best of luck next year. The future holds nothing but promise for this young woman as an athlete and in her collegiate career. Pictured left: Abby Decker, Shrewsbury, RBR’s tennis star athlete signed to play tennis in the Patriot League with her decision to attend Loyola College next year. Abby is surrounded by her family and friends (left to right) seated: Chuck Decker, Abby Decker, Jennifer Decker, (standing) RBR sophomore and tennis player Madeline Solon, RBR sophomore Tedi Decker, RBR Tennis Coach Krishna Kanuga, RBR freshman Caitlyn Decker, and RBR senior and tennis player Bridget Tobin.

BUSINESS FOR CHARITY

Little Silver Business and Professionals Association Donates to Monmouth Day Care Center By Allison Merchant On April 17, Eileen Caruso delivered the results of a collection she organized and ran with the Little Silver Business and Professionals Association (LSBPA) to the Monmouth Day Care Center in Red Bank. For the month of March, Caruso held donation collections in her business Ye Olde Pie Shoppe, the Wells Fargo Bank of Little Silver joining by mid-March. The collection was in response to a post by a day care employee requesting help restocking the food pantry. The Monmouth Day Care Center provides food and personal items for children and their families. A wish list was created and Caruso was sure to add the requests to the flyer posted in her store. Caruso and the LSBPA delivered their donations after a month of collecting items and organizing the benefit. “[The] success was [mainly] our customers on being generous and kind enough to donate for the cause and for Monmouth Day Care Center,” Caruso said. To learn more about the Little Silver Business and Professionals Association, visit www.littlesilverbusiness.com. Do you know a neighbor or organization who has achieved something amazing this month and want to share? EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Why Physical Therapy for Pain Management? By Joanne Fink

The increased use of opioids for pain management in America has created a national health crisis. Opioid prescription rates have quadrupled since 1999, leading to similar increases in prescription opioid deaths and heroin deaths. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines in March 2016 urging prescribers to reduce the use of opioids in favor of safer alternatives in the treatment of chronic pain. Physical therapy is one of the recommended non-opioid alternatives. Physical therapists treat pain through movement, helping patients improve strength, flexibility, range of motion, and function. Physical therapists can also educate their patients about pain, which has been known to improve clinical outcomes1.

Physical therapists treat pain through movement.

Opioids only mask the sensation of pain.

Physical therapy "side effects" include improved mobility, independence and function, decreased pain, and prevention of other health problems through movement and exercise.

Opioid side effects include depression, overdose, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms.

OTHER REASONS TO CHOOSE PHYSICAL THERAPY It may be an alternative to surgery: In some cases, Physical therapy has been found to be equally effective for treating conditions including meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis², and rotator cuff tears3. INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT: Physical therapy treatment plans are tailored to each person’s needs and goals, taking preexisting conditions into account. IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL RISKS: Physical therapists can identify additional health issues, beyond what the patient initially reports, thereby improving an individual’s overall health and quality of life.

Physical therapy is effective for a number of conditions, and the CDC cited "high Opioid effectiveness for quality evidence" supporting exercise as part of physical long-term pain management therapy treatment for famil- is inconclusive in many cases. iar conditions like low back pain, hip and knee osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia.

Or use this feature as a way to share your own story with neighbors. See page 4 for one example of a resident feature. Social Scene What’s happening in the neighborhood? If you’re part of a book club, social group or charity organization promoting fun or service in the community, share your experiences and photos, and invite others to join you! Association Updates If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, we offer an open invitation to post information to your neighbors through this publication for free. Saving association money and putting it towards ways to improve your subdivision is important, so we create customized HOA sections, saving you time and money.

School and Extracurricular Activities Showcase budding athletes, artists and actors among us by submitting photos and details on your kids’ accomplishments, as well as information on school events and fundraisers your family is involved in. FIVE WAYS TO RULE THE LEADERBOARDS 1.

Post great content (at least once per day. Twice is best.)

2.

Request citizenship with many people (and they will often request it back). The more citizens you have in your Myopolis, the more exposure you will build. Exposure, interaction, comments etc. increase the likelihood that you will trend higher.

3.

Interact with many posts. Comment, share, pingworthy, agree etc. The more interactions you have the more you will increase interest in people becoming your citizens. The more citizens, the more exposure for you and your brand.

4. Invite people to Myopolis. The more people you invite from other social media sites, or people who are new to social media, the larger your base. Remember, people don’t need to leave their current social media communities (although once they experience Myopolis they may make that choice). At first, it’s harder to take someone away than it is to get them to add Myopolis. 5. Build your own communities that matter. Get four or five close friends, colleagues or clients to use Myopolis as their primary means of connecting. Even small groups begin to carry heavy influence and motivate people to remain active.
