RESIDENT FEATURE

The Alagona Family Helping with Health and Happiness By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This quote from Mahatma Gandhi offers more than inspiration for the Alagona family. It serves as a motto and guideline for their daily life. Anthony and Ambika Alagona became Little Silver residents four years ago and have never looked back. “Our house is special not only because it is in Little Silver but it is a home we have evolved in,” Ambika said. In the beginning they moved in as an engaged couple, marrying a year later. This past year they welcomed their son, Anand, into the world and their house became a home. 4

The Alagona’s love the location of their home on Branch Avenue, enjoying the proximity to a small creek and trail occupied by deer and a small fox. Animals are always welcome on their property as they leave several bird feeders outside. And one must not forget the most valuable animal friend to their home, Zeus Alagona, the family dog. Caring for others is second nature for Ambika and an interest she has followed for her career path. “Nursing is something I have a passion for, I’m pursuing a holistic nursing degree,” said Ambika. After graduating from Brookdale Community College with a Nursing Degree, Ambika is Little Silver Neighbors

currently studying at Monmouth University to become a Family Nurse Practioner and receive a degree in Holistic Nursing. “I love the change that healthcare is taking in more of the health and wellness route rather than medication and surgeries,” Ambika said. “That is a huge passion of mine: learning about all the different modalities and integrating medicines that we as nurses can give to our patients to help them have a better life or a better outcome from their diseases.” She currently works as a Registered Nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “My mom is in healthcare and at a young age, 14, I started volunteering at Ocean Medical Center,” Ambika said. “I really enjoyed the patient experience, helping patients.” Helping people is a passion that both Ambika and Anthony share. In 2015, Anthony opened his own consulting firm to assist people within the automotive and hospitality industry. He serves as a motivational speaker and sales trainer. “I spent 20 years in hospitality and I always knew I wanted to help people,” Anthony said. “I didn’t know I’d be where I am today. I went to work for a friend of mine who owns a consulting company in 2011 and then I started working on my own starting in 2015.” Anthony’s company consists of business development training where businesses are taught how to be strategic in business operations. The focus revolves on growth and building people. When people in the company grow then that allows the business to build and prosper.

Besides donating to the local Goodwill and Red Bank Soup Kitchen, the Alagona’s are the yearly Light-up toy and glow stick vendor, NJTRENDS, at Oceanfest in Long Branch and are proud to have raised money through various events for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Monmouth County. In 2016 Ambika was crowned Mrs. New Jersey America and placed tenth in the Mrs. America pageant in Las Vegas. She involved local businesses like Rook Coffee Roasters and Graze restaurant to partake in the preparations as she went off to Mrs. America. “We live a lifestyle of gratitude as we consider ourselves extremely blessed in all aspects of our lives, including our health, happiness as a family and aspiration to be a small stone that creates a ripple of change in another’s life,” Ambika said. The two met through friends at the MIX in Long Branch 2009, and married September 5, 2015 at the Crown Plaza in Cherry Hill, NJ where they had a colorful traditional Indian ceremony and reception with their closest family and friends. The two moved to Little Silver for many reasons. They had lived in numerous towns within the Monmouth County region before settling on Little Silver. “The number one thing that stuck out for me was that it’s a very safe community,” Ambika said. “It is very safe to live here, everyone is very friendly. Everything is very local because it’s such a small community,” Ambika elaborated. “We enjoy the convenience of being close to the beach and close to Red Bank and close to the train station if we want to go into the city. So, convenience and safety were the things that stood out to us when we moved in here.” The Alagonas enjoy the diversity of their neighborhood. Ambika specifically describes her walks down Sunnycrest Lane, where there are several families with children of all ages playing and enjoying the pleasures of childhood. The growing family hopes to add many more years to their residency. Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Nominate your neighbor to be featured in one of our upcoming issues! AROUND THE TOWN

Little Silver Day

Was Worth the Wait! By Ryan Keating After an incredibly successful Inaugural Little Silver Day community event in 2016, it was decided that the event would take place every two years. So, with high anticipation building throughout the town for the second Little Silver Day, scheduled for Saturday, June 23rd, of course mother nature made the town wait one more day. On Sunday, June 24th nearly the entire Little Silver community once again celebrated together and it was well worth the wait! For six months leading up to the event, the organizing committee worked tirelessly to create this free, one-day, fun-filled event which over 3,000 Little Silver residents attended. “The Little Silver Borough employees, Fire & First Aid volunteers, and Policemen were incredible to work with and made this extensive planning process very enjoyable,” said Rick Brandt, President of the Little Silver Charitable Foundation, which coordinated Little Silver Day. Little Silver Day would not have been possible without the amazingly generous businesses and families who sponsored and donated toward the event. The festivities at Little Silver Day were perfect and the event was enjoyed by all. There was something for everyone! The games, activities, musicians, food and fireworks delighted the crowd and reinforced why Little Silver is such an amazing place. The 100+ volunteers at Little Silver Day helping to facilitate such an amazing event, and the dozens of volunteers who came in waves the morning after to help clean up, really proved why the huge hearts of the people in this small town make the Little Silver community what it is. The Little Silver Charitable Foundation was founded in 2015 to help support and improve the well-being of the Little Silver community. Our mission is to support education programs, recreation activities, families in need with scholarships and other Little Silver organizations. To learn more, visit www. Little Silver 5K Running 25 Years and Counting By Allison Merchant Sunday, September 30, 2018 the Little Silver PTO will not only be kicking off a wonderful fundraising 5K but will be reaching a historical milestone in the community. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event and the PTO is excited to continue the tradition. Jen Holzapfel, Communications Director for the Little Silver PTO, elaborates on the expansion on the 5K throughout the years. “Over the years, our race has grown from a local 5K into a USATF Certified Open Men’s Championship Race USATF Grand Prix Event, attracting hundreds of runners, including high-caliber runners and running clubs from across the state.” This event is a collaborative endeavor with many community members. The music/band-inspired race shirt was designed this year by Brian Meulener while the post-race party hosted at the firehouse is being organized by Kristin Meulener and her wonderful team. “Our post-race party not only attracts runners, but families from town attend to listen to some great music by local bands, eat great food from local restaurants, and enjoy the great kids’ games and activities that Kristen sets up year after year,” Holzapfel said.

a way for the community to reconnect, run a competitive race and enjoy an afternoon together sampling what our town and community businesses have to offer.” This race provides a shared goal for the entire community — help children with educational funding. The money raised with the 5K and other fundraisers, the PTO is able assist the school budgets. Many of the funds are applied directly to teachers in the classroom, assemblies presenting topics like anti-bullying, character education, robotics and STEM, world history, American history, and musical performances. It also goes towards coordinating and funding cultural and charitable events. “One thing that we can’t put on the Little Silver 5K website or in a flyer is the sense of community you will feel when you take part in the event,” said Holzapfel. “From what goes on behind the scenes with our amazing team who makes sure everything falls into place, to the quality runners who give the race that elite feeling, to cheers from crowd — you just can’t put into words the feeling you get when you’re a part of something as great as the Little Silver 5K.”

The Little Silver 5K (LS5K) began in 1993 and was known as The Little Silver Classic. It was started by Colleen Brennan and Wendy Jennings, two Little Silver parents, to raise money for Little Silver schools. The first race shirt was designed by Barbara Murray, a school art teacher. “Throughout the years, we have had some truly dedicated Little Silver community members involved in the management of this race,” Holzapfel said. “Colleen and Kevin Brennan and Wendy Jennings served as the original race directors and the Brennans carried the torch for 12 years. Mary Lou Mannino, Diane Bade, Patty Magill and Fabbi Kutzin led the effort and helped grow the LS5K into what it is today.” The race director from 2010-2015 was Dawn Wilcox and helped market the race to championship runners. In 2013 and 2014 she was joined by Caren McCormack. By 2014 Stacey Crow joined Wilcox and McCormack and ran the race with Wilcox in 2015. At that time, these women helped the race achieve distinction as a USATF NJ Long Distance Running Open Women's Championship Race. Michelle Koster and Stacey Tietjen took over as race directors in 2016 and still hold those positions today.

“The significance of the Little Silver 5K is that it is an event run by members of our community to benefit our children,” Holzapfel said. “We like to say, ‘Small Town, Big Race’. It has always been a huge event in town, not only because it raises money for the PTO to use to fulfill its mission to enhance our children’s education, experiences and environment, but it is also a way for the community to come together and have fun.” The race may be a competitive event for runners, is also serves as a shorter event on a flat course to include a wider range of runners. There are options for our young runners who might not be ready to tackle the 5K, with a one-miler for children and fun runs for the littlest runners. “The 5K is always our first and largest fundraiser of the year, held just after everyone has started the new school year,” Holzapfel said. “It is

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Sonex: The Evolution of Carpal Tunnel Release Submitted by Apex Sports & Regenerative Medicine Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common conditions treated by sports medicine and Orthopedic physicians. It affects more than 12 million people per year in the US and carpal tunnel release is the second most common surgery performed, with over 230,000 performed annually. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve, as it passes through a narrow space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. Compression of this nerve typically causes numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand, specifically the thumb, index, middle and inside part of the ring finger. If left untreated, this condition may worsen over time and can even cause burning pain, muscle atrophy or muscle wasting. The most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is repetitive motion of the wrist, like when using the computer or doing repetitive movements at work. Underactive thyroid, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and pregnancy can also increase the risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. If conservative treatments like bracing, ice, NSAID’s (ibuprofen, naproxen), physical therapy or injections fail to relieve the symptoms, the last step is surgical release of the carpal tunnel. Traditionally, carpal tunnel release was performed as an open surgery. A two-inch incision is made in the palm and wrist where the transverse carpal ligament is exposed and cut. This open surgery often requires a long recovery period, has a high rate of scar tissue formation which can also prolong the recovery period, and as with any surgery, a risk for infection. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release has a much smaller incision than open carpal tunnel, one or two incisions around a half-inch each. A

camera is then inserted to visualize the ligament, nerves and artery while the ligament is cut. This method has a faster recovery but also has a slightly higher risk of nerve injury. Sonex SX-One Microknife is the latest evolution of carpal tunnel release. Developed in the Mayo Clinic, the Sonex procedure was created to provide patients with a safe and effective treatment, with a low risk for infection or scar formation. In the Sonex procedure, a very small incision is made – the incision is so small, a patient won’t even need a single stitch after the surgery. Sonex is performed with ultrasound guidance which allows the physician to visualize all the nerves and blood vessels, whereas with an endoscopic surgery, the physician can only see what is at the end of the camera. Since very little tissue is disturbed and there is complete visualization, the likelihood of complications such as scar tissue, infection and nerve or vascular damage is extremely low. Because Sonex is minimally invasive, most people can return to their usual activities in a couple of days, unlike in an open surgery which can take weeks to months. In order to perform the procedure, the physician must be very skilled at musculoskeletal ultrasound. Because of this there are only a couple dozen doctors performing this procedure in the entire country. Dr. Daniel Savarino at Apex Sports and Regenerative Medicine in Tinton Falls is one of these few, select doctors. Dr. Savarino is certified in musculoskeletal ultrasound and has extensive knowledge in the field. To recap, Sonex for carpal tunnel provides the smallest incision, the least likelihood of complications and the fastest recovery of any method of carpal tunnel release. To learn more about this cutting edge procedure, please visit Apex Sports and Regenerative Medicine’s website -www.ApexSportsNJ.com or call (732) 385-APEX (2739) to see if Sonex is right for you.

EDUCATION

Graduate Feature — Curran Lane By Allison Merchant We’ve all heard stories of walking into a house, locking eyes with another, or strolling along a ivy-covered campus and the feeling of just right. For Curran Lane, 18, this moment appeared when he began helping people at the age of 16. Lane began volunteering for the fire department during the summer of 2015. He found the experiences fun and intense, developing a taste for helping others. At the age of 16, he was a lifeguard for Sea Bright, experiencing firsthand the change of the Sea Bright Ocean Rescue under the new Captain Mike Hudson. “We’re the most advanced Ocean Rescue agency around,” Lane said. “We’re nineone-one response as well as guarding public beach. We also do EMS calls for Sea Bright and we have jet-ski response for any water calls like boating incidents.” Lane found his true passion in the EMT department. “You get the person-to-person contact, you’re actually helping someone’s life,” Lane explained. Despite earning a full-time position as Sergeant for Sea Bright Ocean Rescue, Lane did not grow up expecting his life to center on helping others. He joined the volunteers with some friends and fell in love with volunteering. Lane elaborated on the dichotomy of being authoritative at 16. “It was weird because you’re being exposed to a lot a young age. But it’s also fun because people don’t expect a lot from a 16-year-old EMT. I liked working at Sea Bright because it exposed me to more. When I’m there I’m not the young kid who happens to be an EMT. I’m an EMT first so you see things and deal with things that can freak you out sometimes. Other times it’s just really cool.” Lane explained the large learning curve he encountered after becoming an EMT. He gained vital medical knowledge but concluded reactionary responses are just as important. “You have to be very level headed,” Lane said. Though he did not know it, this fortuitous discovery was just a predecessor to his choices after graduating from RBR. “My friends would say ‘I went to this school and I know it’s the one’. I went to schools and nothing really clicked for me,” Lane admitted. He began looking at other career options after high school like a California lifeguard, which serves year round, a paramedic or an EMT. During this search he narrowed down to joining the military. “At first I was thinking medical in the military,” Lane said. “But I was walking into lunch one day and there

was a Marines table set up in the cafeteria. I figured I’ll give it a shot and talk to them. I went in for a meeting and I was hooked.” On September 4th, Lane will begin boot camp in Paris Island, South Carolina with the United States Marine Corps. He is not the only RBR graduate joining the service but will be traveling to South Carolina alone. All the Monmouth County recruits have the opportunity meet three times a week for workouts held by recruiters. After boot camp, Lane will attend the school of infantry in North Carolina, then a year in Force Reconnaissance at the Military Occupational Specialty School. He has spoken with some of his volunteer mentors who have served to help ease anxieties about future plans. “They all say don’t plan ‘after’ because you could end up doing it all your life or you could find something during it that could lead you in a completely different direction,” Lane said. “I’m waiting to see how it goes to plan the ‘after’ because I don’t know what is going to happen.” Lane received support in and out of the home, appreciating the encouragement he had from his teachers at RBR. “They see you in class and they know what kind of learner you are,” Lane said. “A lot of the teachers have been very supportive with the military decision.” The community of Little Silver has always been kind to Lane and he is grateful for spending most of his childhood here. “It has everything in close proximity,” Lane said. “I can go to the beach and I can surf or I can go out and find hiking trails. It’s a small town but I like small towns. There’s a good sense of community.” As he prepares to leave for his new journey, Lane acknowledges the goals he will carry with him. “I strive to be a leader. I never thought about it before but I realized, especially with the Marines, leadership is something that I gravitate towards.” He served as the EMS cadet Captain of the fire cadets and is the second 18 year old promoted to Sergeant at Sea Bright Ocean Rescue. When asked what strength he values in himself, he replied, “I’m always there. Whether it be with friends or EMS I always have their backs, I’ll do anything for them. Same thing applies with work and volunteering, I’ll do whatever I can to help someone.”

EDUCATION

New Beginnings — Post Grads of Little Silver By Allison Merchant August may signal the turning point of the summer, but it also serves as a beginning. In June RBR celebrated the graduation of 300+ seniors. Valedictorian Harry Jain from Red Bank, a student in RBR’s Academy of Engineering, selected Yale University to study electrical engineering and computer science. Salutatorian Willow Martin from Little Silver, a creative writing major in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, will attend Cornell where she will study physics and astrophysics. Little Silver Neighbors would like to congratulate all the graduates from RBR and would like to dedicate this issue to all the Little Silver students, wishing them luck their future endeavors. RBR Nigel Mitchell — Running the Show By Allison Merchant Ripe from finishing just his second season, Nigel Mitchell, junior from Red Bank, became RBR’s first State Champion runner in over a decade. He won the 200-meter dash at the NJ Group 3 championship at Central Regional High School with a tremendous time of 21.73. Prior to the championship, he had won the Monmouth County Championship 200-meter dash as well as the NJ Group 3 North 2 200-meter sectional championship. Mitchell’s first love is football and he currently plays for RBR as a wide receiver, running back and cornerback. He also plans to play football in college. One of his football coaches, Danny Mendoza, has been mentoring Mitchell and encouraged him to try track as a sophomore. Coach Mendoza took over the responsibilities of the Boys and Girls sprinters coach in the spring of 2017. He commented about Mitchell’s progress, “He started winning and got addicted to winning and therefore started to work harder and harder. He came into this season with a great work ethic and dedicated himself to the track.” Mitchell’s first season consisted of testing the waters and seeing where his strengths were. By March of this year, he began training rigorously and came out stronger than ever.

“In the first season, I came in second a lot and everyone congratulated me, but I was not happy, so I came into this season knowing that I wanted to be first because I dislike the feeling of coming in any place but first place,” Mitchell said. “I like to live by the quote ‘If you are not first you are last’.” In addition to Mitchell’s success, RBR just finished one of its best spring track and field seasons in recent memory with four athletes advancing to New Jersey’s Meet of Champions located in Northern Burlington. Maggie Cahill from Shrewsbury, took the 100-meter dash Monmouth County Championship along with placing 2nd at the NJ Group 3 North 2 sectional championship, and placed sixth overall in the Group 3 State Championship 100-meter dash final. Brendan Loftus from Little Silver was the NJ Group 3 North 2 sectional champion and placed 2nd in the NJ Group 3 state championship meet in the shot put. And Charlotte Cochrane from Little Silver also qualified for the Meet of Champions in the 1600m and placed 4th overall in NJ Group 3 in the 3200m.

GREENWAYS & WATERWAYS

Paddling the Happy Town of Little Silver By Billie Crawford-McNally My dad gave me my first boat when I was nine years old. It was a khaki colored duck boat and it was love at first sight. Most mornings found me dressed in my school uniform, paddling Black Jack Creek, behind our house in Oceanport, before anyone else in the house was up. That was when I began exploring the waterways of the Shrewsbury and later, the Navesink. We are a community surrounded by water but surprisingly few residents take advantage of the rivers and estuaries. I would like to change that by introducing you to a few of my favorite waterways on the Shrewsbury. Little Silver has two places to start in for the public, both of which are wonderful starting points for a kayaking or paddle adventures. Santelle Park is an easy launch, I personally prefer the ramp to the dock. Once you’re on the water, head under the rail road bridge, if you’re lucky you’ll catch a train passing overhead. Follow the creek under the Oceanport Ave Bridge and keep going. On one side is the fort, on the other is Shrewsbury. There is a very definite, wider artery of water to follow, and a few smaller side trips. The water thins to a stream and eventually ends at Hwy 36, although I must admit I have not made that far, due to tides and a menacing osprey. I promise this is worth the effort and once you pass the first bend you will no longer feel like you are in New Jersey. You will find yourself surrounded by snowy egrets roosting in gnarled trees and long-legged herons scouring the shallows for minnows. This trip is best taken when the tide is coming in. You need to turn around when the tide ebbs and ride it out as there is very little water at low tide at the upper part of this trip. Another paddle option from Santelle Park is to shoot across to the Oceanport side. Hug the Horseneck Point peninsula and paddle your way to the marina for lunch and a chilled glass of your favorite beverage. Just take care not to imbibe too much, there are no Uber jet skis on Parker Creek, which is the name of this bit of water. You can also explore the area around Blackberry Bay park and the lagoons. My other launch spot is at the end of Little Silver Point Road, before the private road. This is a perfect place for any tide. I personally do not like to launch here on windy days. The waterway is wide, and you definitely get

some chop but on a good day, with little boat traffic this is heaven. I do have a favorite spot that we paddle to, but I am sworn to secrecy not to share. Ask me about it at the Acme. However, I can tell you about the Lippincott Creek, head right when leaving the beach and you will find yourself under 7 Bridges Road, follow this to the end. This is a great kid paddle, the water is shallow, there’s lots of sea life and it ends at Point Road school. If you go left from the launch and follow land at a hard left, you find yourself on Little Silver Creek. This is a lazy paddle once you get around the spit of land. It’s a thin waterway and there are a few nice estuaries to meander upon on the Rumson/Little Silver border. If you’re feeling energetic there are always Sedge and Gunning islands. This is a work out. I have circled the islands on a windy day in the fall and all I can say was it felt good to get back in the car. Of course, on a warm summers day it’s a very different story. These islands are closer to Sea Bright and Rumson then Little Silver but it does make for a nice day trip with lunch and a chilled something or other. Again, I advise keeping to the Rumson shoreline, check out the little estuaries. Gunning Island is part of a public land trust, so landing is fine but as always respect nature, leave nothing behind. A word about safety, I personally like to keep to the shore line and shallow water, especially with new paddlers or kids. Low tide is better than high to ensure that if you do tip and you might, that you are not too deep. The Shrewsbury is a fairly shallow body of water, especially since Sandy. Avoid the channel or cross quickly. Kayaking is easier than SUP for exploring especially with kids. Always bring life jackets, put your phone in a plastic bag and always, always let someone know you’re on the water and where you intend to go and when you expect to get back. Happy paddling. Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our April 2018 issue Family Feature! For advice from an avid explorer, look for her monthly column Greenways and Waterways in upcoming issues to find more adventures in Little Silver and the beautiful world around it. She recently published her novel The Grove found on Amazon. Visit her Facebook at www.facebook.com/ billiecrawfordmcnally.
