April 2018

Welcome to the April issue of your Little Silver Neighbors magazine! We have a very exciting month packed with awesome community events this April and you can rest assured your community magazine has been diligent in gathering up some of the highlights for you to learn about in this issue! This month is filled with some great holidays and national celebration days from April Fool's, Easter, Arbor Day, World Health Day and Earth Day to come more obscure holidays like Sorry Charlie Day, Hug an Australian Day and Walk on the Wild Side Day. And, how could we leave out World Penguin Day? All joking aside though, I am very excited to bring you some local events like the Ridge Run 5k, Little Silver’s Coaches Appreciation Dinner, 2018 Spring Sports Parade, and some terrific locally sourced articles. The magazine continues to grow and it is due in a major part to the spirit of this community. The enthusiasm and energy that I am fortunate enough to witness from Little Silver residents only drives me to do more to create a forum for everyone to connect. I would like to take a moment now to thank everyone who came together to make the EFLS Fundraiser happen last month. It was humbling to see everyone come together as a town for a common goal… not to mention having a great time doing so! A very heartfelt thank you to everyone at the EFLS for putting together the event - you will be hearing some more about this in the next issue - so stay tuned! We have some new sponsors that have joined the magazine that you will find in the coming pages, and a new Expert Contributor who has written a great article for those who may suffer from allergies as the season starts to change. To all the sponsors of Little Silver Neighbors - we couldn’t make this publication happen without you! Thank you for your continued support for this wonderful community. Keep those submissions and ideas coming. I had the opportunity to speak with a lot of residents at the event last month and some great ideas for the magazine are in the works. If you have something you would like to see or an idea that you would like to discuss, reach out to me or my content coordinator Allison - we are always available to connect with you and can’t wait to hear from you!! Until next time Little Silver, we’ll be looking forward to some April showers bringing us May flowers! Gratefully yours, Ryan Keating Publisher

RESIDENT FEATURE

The McNally Family

Writing a Story of Their Own By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story The best stories are the ones with the details. Those subtle but important moments that become pivotal in character development or an exciting adventure. When it comes to savoring those momentous details of her story, Billie Crawford McNally gladly takes it all in. “The thing that fills my heart with pride and joy: being Jack and Jade’s mom,” said Billie. A few years ago, Billie and two other moms took their eight children on two separate 8,000 mile road trips camping in tents. She recalls a moment sitting on the edge of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. One of the boys had brought along a boomerang for his encounter with the phenomenon. “We watched as he threw it out across the great divide, it sailed off and just as we thought we would never see it again, a cross wind caught it and brought it back to us,” Billie said. This illuminated a connectedness that she experienced in an adventurous life that still brought her home to Little Silver. Together the band of travelers has explored 36 states and countless adventures. 4

Billie grew up in Oceanport but spent a good part of her childhood in a store her parents worked at known as Grants, now Walgreens. She planted her roots in each of the departments: playfulness with the toys, kindness from feeding the turtles, a sweet tooth from the Brach’s candy display. “I loved this town, even then,” she said. Her restless curiosity led her pursuits away from Little Silver for a spell. She graduated with a Paper Hanging Degree (PHD) and started a business at the age of 20. Billie plunged forward as a window display specialist, relocation specialist on two continents, an avocado farmer, a kindergarten English teacher in China and a substitute teacher at the American School in Hong Kong. She met her husband AJ at a scuba class in Avon in 1990, moved to Hong Kong and they were married by 1997. Their son Jack was born and then five weeks later they moved to Hawaii to run their avocado farm. Jade like her mother was born a Jersey girl. Little Silver Neighbors

RESIDENT FEATURE

“Some of us came to Little Silver because of serendipity, some from hard work and sheer determination,” Billie said. “Some came back to the town they grew up in and loved. I think most of us moved here to give our children an idyllic childhood.” Billie relishes being part of the Little Silver community. She realized the hard work and devotion that pour into running a town when her husband became a councilman. “The hours they spend, not just attending meetings but planning budgets, solving issues, helping people who are struggling for one reason or another, are countless,” she said. Now flourishing at Northeastern University in Boston, her son Jack became an Eagle Scout and contributed his efforts to benefitting the parks and wellness by installing AEDs. Her daughter Jade attends

Red Bank Regional High School and is active in sports as well as volunteering. Billie considers the multilayered aspect of Little Silver a strength for the community. “We all come from diverse backgrounds and are varied ages, but I think our commonality is our joy of life,” she said. Her embrace of the carpe diem philosophy has allowed Billie to pursue her biggest dream yet: becoming a novelist. She published her first book, The Grove and already has a second in the works. “…Grounds for Divorce a story about love, deceit and a good cup of coffee,” Billie said. One of her inspirations stems from the words of her mother, “Every day you wake up is a good day.” Her mother was a five-time cancer survivor and raised her with a strong sense of family and the appreciation for life lived full.

RESIDENT FEATURE CONTINUED

Billie cherishes the heart found in the Little Silver community like the recreational programs and neighborhood camaraderie. Santa visits each year on Christmas via the Little Silver firetruck, breakfast mornings with neighbors on Westwood Court are filled with smiles, joyful are the memories of children soccer with the amazing Mr. Flynn and there is a reinvigoration found in Adult Open Soccer. “When AJ comes home from a Sunday morning with the soccer guys, he is a kid again, beaten up and dirty but happy,” Billie said. The pursuit of happiness is her personal motto. She recalls the lullaby of backgammon pieces clicking her to sleep, the neighborly game usually hosted in her home. All these details weave together a delicate but vivid tapestry of the McNally’s home and family. It is the connection and bonded threads that make such a strong and wonderful story. Chain reactions are potent but eminent in Billie’s life. “Kindness sets off a chain reaction,” she said. “Thoughtfulness sets off a chain reaction.” It has been an honor to be part of this village.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Allergy & Asthma Associates: Fighting Spring Allergies By Dr. Tina Zecca With spring quickly approaching, many of us develop symptoms consisting of sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes also known as allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is also referred to as seasonal allergies. Allergic rhinitis occurs when the body's immune system becomes sensitive and reacts to pollen, dust mite, mold, or animals. However, certain individuals may not have any reaction to these particular allergens. The most common pollens triggering symptoms in the spring may be tree, grass or ragweed pollens, whereas mold and ragweed are most common in the fall. Dust mite, mold and pet dander may also trigger symptoms year-round in some individuals. Typical symptoms that an allergic person may experience include sneezing, runny nose, congestion and itchy eyes just to name a few. Cough is another symptom that may also develop and trigger asthma symptoms. Patients with chronic sinusitis that have allergic rhinitis as a trigger may have more infections during the allergy season. This time of year, can be dreaded by many but it really doesn't have to be! A board-certified allergist can help identify and control allergy symptoms as well as prevent other comorbid conditions that may be

associated with allergic rhinitis such as asthma and chronic sinusitis. Simple measures such as dosing windows and staying indoors during peak pollen time usually in the morning can help lessen symptoms. Also, if you are outdoors during most of the day, showering in the evening can help wash away pollen on your skin. Many treatment strategies are available that you can discuss with your allergist and better control your symptoms. Oral therapies, nasal sprays and eye drops have all been used to help with symptom control. If you do have a history of prior seasonal problems, starting therapy prior to the onset of the allergy season may help. One of the most effective ways of treating seasonal allergies is starting immunotherapy (allergy shots). These injections expose you to small amounts of the allergen you are allergic to in gradual increments over time so that you can learn to tolerate rather than react with typical allergy symptoms. Being knowledgeable of what you are allergic to and learning preventative and treatment measures will help you enjoy the spring and fall seasons!

BUSINESS PROFILE

Schooley Mitchell By Allison Merchant For Jeff Mahalik, family and community is a driving force. In 2016 he embarked on a business journey to find balance in those aspects, opening the Holmdel office of the Schooley Mitchell franchise. “I decided it was time to partake in a career in something I believed in, not just one which provided a paycheck,” Mahalik said. He and his wife Gina moved their family of four from their apartment in Manhattan to the Monmouth County community finding solace in the fresh start.

Silver has welcomed him and his family with open arms. “My personal network has quickly expanded since becoming a sponsor of Little Silver Neighbors, and I look forward to being involved for years to come.” Mahalik embraces this attitude of combining a community persona with his business. “In addition to businesses of all sizes, we’re also helping charities, churches, synagogues, and several other nonprofit organizations,” Mahalik said, “This is allowing me to build lasting, meaningful relationships.”

Schooley Mitchell provides businesses and other groups with expense reductions in the areas of telecommunications, electronic payments processing, and small package shipping. Mahalik explains the positive business model of the company that has been helping more than 17,000 business customers since 2004. “What’s notable about our business is its contingency-based aspect – our only compensation is a share of any savings we find,” Mahalik said. Schooley Mitchell assists those lacking the resources or time needed to optimize business expenses with its affable approach of “no catch” guarantee. If results are not seen, fees are not charged. Although he was skeptical about leaving the Big Apple behind, Mahalik holds no regrets of his decision. The community of Little

ENVIRONMENTAL SPOTLIGHT

Spring Cleaning – Finding Fuel Efficiency with Cold Weather By Allison Merchant The clock reads 6:30am. Stepping out the door is a balancing act between bags and to-go coffee not to mention the brutal gust of chilled wind trying to knock you back to the farm in Kansas. When you settle into the car, the cold leather seats are unforgiving and you can see your own breath in the dim speedometer light. You briefly think, I should have warmed the car ten minutes ago. While a warm car would suit personal comforts, it can be quite uncomfortable for the environment.

engine when a vehicle comes to a complete stop. Start-stop systems can improve fuel economy by 4 or 5 percent, according to the EPA.

Despite the promise of warmer weather, April in the past has had its share of winter. To help ease into a cleaner spring, one can be mindful of little changes in a daily routine. Current environmental protection statutes stand in place according to the State’s Bureau of Mobile Sources regarding car idling. The general rule declares vehicles may idle up to three minutes. One exception includes vehicles stopped for three or more hours in temperatures below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing fifteen minutes of idling.

Another myth about idling cars is the need to warm up the engine. Yes, it is true that a car is more efficient with a warm engine than cold. However, letting the car idle uses more fuel and creates more pollution according to the EPA. Most cars built after 1993 do not have carburetors, this part needed to be warm before driving. Nowadays, transmissions are designed to hold a gear at higher RPMs at colder engine temperatures. So stepping on the gas from the get-go can cut out the emissions released from a ten minute warming session.

Yes, idling cars tend to frequent the colder months more. However, according to the EPA, a stationary vehicle could cost as much as $0.02 per minute with the amount of gas used. So all we need to do is turn the car off while we wait right? Easier said than done.

Conversely, this does not warrant aggressive driving. Speeding up and rapidly braking, especially in that wonderful morning commute, can lower gas mileage by approximately 15 to 30 percent, according to the EPA. Being safe and smart will go a long way not only with the drive but also with the environment.

Cars idle for more than just picking up a child from school or running into the bank for an errand. Heavy traffic, long lights, railroad crossings, and avid biking athletes are just a few things that could stop daily motion. Car manufacturers have strategized over the years with the implementation of Start-Stop systems. Driving a rental car that stalls out when you reach the first stoplight? Fear not, but take that foot off the brake and the engine will rev to life again. These mechanisms are designed to save fuel by turning off the

Don’t have this new technology in your cruiser yet? There are a few other things one can do to help eliminate some of the pollution through car idling. When arriving for a pick-up time, optimization of time is key. If the set time is 2:15pm, pull around at 2:14pm. Or if you prefer the early bird special, be sure to turn the car off until a minute before the designated time. This can save gas, money and clean air.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Jim Scanlon – Giving Heart through Music By Allison Merchant Jim Scanlon has prides himself as not only being part of the Little Silver community but as one who enjoys giving back. This lifestyle has influenced his latest creative endeavor with The Musical Adventure of OneShot Billy. “I wrote a song-filled book to inspire a bright future,” Scanlon said. “The Musical Adventure of One-Shot Billy is about a substitute music teacher, Benjamin Lee, who unveils an experimental lesson plan on an unruly middle school class.” This musical novel circles around mythical icons that are forces of nature. Mother Nature disciplines her three sons: Father Time, Man in the Moon and Cupid. Father Time controls the synchronicity of aligning planets around the sun. The Man in the Moon controls the chaotic ebb and flow of the tides. Cupid is the baby of the family and is the human resource director and must manage the humans on earth. However, as a grown man he has lost his way and is more concerned with his own love. His perfect shots have lost perspective. This story traverses through Billy’s (Cupid) latest undertaking on earth in a town called Fair Haven. Here he must return to his original purpose of to create the balance between give and take among humans. “I believe everyone’s actions can be measured by the simple standard of give and take,” Scanlon said. “Determining one’s role at any moment is useful when trying to understand our relationship with the Earth and each other.”

28 Riverview Towers, Red Bank

Along his path to redemption Billy must find a way to fill his own emptiness. “The most misunderstood word on Earth is success,” explains Scanlon. “One-Shot Billy says, ‘It’s not how much you win, it’s what you choose.’ Especially, when you achieve a leadership position.” Scanlon wrote privately for years, keeping his creative passions personal and close to home. “Therefore, all my energy was focused on crafting meaningful songs and stories,” Scanlon said. “It was a relentless passion that followed me everywhere.” Throughout the novel are songs that guide Billy’s choices and actions. These lyrics were recorded professionally and available on Jim’s website Oneshotbilly.com. The reception from his work has been considered one of the greatest achievements for Scanlon. “Maybe the most rewarding example was the family that read the book to their children on a road-trip last summer,” Scanlon said. “They downloaded the soundtrack and played each song as it occurred in the plot. Reading the story together gave them a chance to discuss the many lessons learned by the main character, One-Shot Billy.” Furthermore, Scanlon developed and performs a motivational program for kids. Choices & Voices is performed at schools and summer camps, generating heartwarming responses. Although written for the audience of middle-school aged students, The Musical Adventure of One-Shot Billy is a great read for the whole family.
