Why gaming on the go is bigger than ever! It’s no secret that the mobile platform is now the biggest space for gaming. With almost 5 billion available devices worldwide, you can count on the fact that you or someone you know is gaming on a smartphone or tablet. Mobile gaming has grown quite fast in the past few years making the platform 50 times bigger than traditional consoles. In fact, most younger players have had their first gaming experiences on their parent’s smartphone. Many players relate gaming experiences with the mobile platform more than they do with consoles. As smartphones and tablets get more and more powerful, they can render higher quality graphics and offer exciting new ways to play. Big publishers such as Nintendo have noticed this trend and that’s the reason we can now play Super Mario Run on iOS and eventually Android in 2017. In this issue of Little Player we did something different and focused only on mobile gaming. Our Editors tell you about their favorite mobile games and perhaps many of the games they like are favorites of yours too! We also have a special section highlighting what we feel are the Top 20 “must play” mobile games for kids. I hope you really enjoy this issue and remember always check with a parent before downloading any new games to your devices.

BOSS

1-4

The first world in Super Mario Run may seem easy, but it is not without its challenges. You will discover that returning to these levels once you have mastered more advanced techniques will make it easier to find and collect all the pink, purple, and black coins hidden throughout each level. BOSS STRATEGY The first boss is Bowser and is actually quite easy. Watch his timing and do a long jump right over him and grab the axe to make him fall in the lava.

The second world starts with Mario in a more puzzle-like level facing Boo and his spooky deceptions. Be prepared for increased difficulty and lots of platforms as well as some new enemies to encounter and defeat as you get to the air ship. BOSS STRATEGY You will now face Boom Boom but don’t worry, he’s not so tough... this time. Simply hug the wall, wait for him to rush at you and time your wall jumps so you land on his head three times. DIGITAL EDITION

The third world has Mario running through the desert and platfoming in the skies at first. Then it’s back to the overworld and ends with a more difficult castle filled with treacherous fire rings, fire bars and lava bubbles. BOSS STRATEGY This time Bowser is tougher because he jumps and spits fire balls at you. If that wasn’t enough there’s a fire bar between you and the axe! Try running under Bowser when the time is right!

Be prepared for a fire filled adventure upon yet another dangerous air ship. BOSS STRATEGY It’s Boom Boom again, but there’s a catch. You can’t hug the wall for very long this time because there are burners on both sides. Time your wall jumps and hit him on the head three times to win! DIGITAL EDITION

Super Mario Run iOS (2016), Android (2017)

Nintendo’s Mario series has always been fantastic, and Super Mario Run on iOS is no exception. Mario has never looked so good on a mobile platform. His animations are smooth and the graphics are crisp. It’s hard to believe this is not a console game. The concept is easy. Mario runs independently and as the player you just need to tap the screen for him to jump. The simplicity of the controls truly make this game easy to pick up and play on the go!

BLAST.FROM.THE.PAST!

Nintendo delivers the power of great game play on the go! By Martin Alessi

Nintendo has a long history with gaming on the go. They originally released their Game & Watch series in the early 1980s. The immense impact they had on portable video games can be connected to the release of the Game Boy handheld console in 1989. It featured a black and white screen and a similar button setup to the NES. It also had a headphone jack and featured stereo sound. The Game Boy hit the shelves with just a handful of launch titles and was an instant success. The system itself came bundled with Tetris in the USA and this little Russian puzzle game was the star of the show. Another game that contributed to the wild success of the Game Boy was Super Mario Land, Mario’s first portable adventure! In total, the Game Boy has sold approximately 118 million units since it’s release making it one of the most successful consoles ever developed. 20 Little Player Magazine

This reboot of an old favorite of mine is worth a look. It’s Galaga redone with new game play and enhanced graphics. The game is simple, yet can be a bit brutal at times, so be prepared for a challenge. Don’t buy the upgrades as most of them can be earned through game play. I really like the new ships and weapons!

Galaga Wars is a simple take on the old favorite. You fly around and shoot space bugs inside a space jet. You also collect coins for weapons and catch all kinds of power ups. You even are able to save other pilots. The graphics are sort of weird and I think it would be more fun on consoles so I can play with my family.

I really love this game! Your ship auto shoots as you move by sliding your finger across the screen. It looks great and it’s easy to play. You can play the game in short sessions so it’s perfect for being on the go. I only stopped playing because my phone was getting too hot so please be careful!

I like Galaga Wars as it is very futuristic compared to the original Galaga. You can move up and down and across the screen. You can destroy alien ships to get coins so you can level up your spaceship. The graphics are much better than the original version. I recommend this game to Galaga fans. DIGITAL EDITION

Hill Climb Racing 2 is a fun side-scrolling racing game. You race up and down hills towards the finish line. Control are simple and responsive with only a brake and gas pedal. The trick is to give it just enough brake to prevent your jeep from flipping over as it pops a wheelie when it hits various bumps in the road.

I don’t like Hill Climb Racing 2 because the computer opponents win all the time and are hard to beat. Unless you are really good and can beat them. The controls are hard because there is only 2 buttons. The front pedal and back pedal. The can make this game better by having the levels longer and easier.

8.0

This was more fun than I expected it to be. I never felt like the races were frustratingly hard and I really liked that you don’t need to spend real money. There’s a ton of unlockables and even achievements! Multiplayer is in here too but the way your opponents are picked can be a little off sometimes.

I like this game because you can race against computers in different lands. You can unlock items to customize your cars. You can level up by winning races. The graphics are like a cartoon. My favorite part of the game is racing other players. The music is slow but can be fast paced at points. I recommend this game! DIGITAL EDITION

This above average game features really slick neon graphics and cool sounds and music. Easy to learn game play has you flipping through the levels in no time. However there is very little replay value and no continues unless you buy the premium version. I wanted to like it more, but I was simply uninspired.

I kind of like PinOut because it is very futuristic. The game and the ball glows. I don’t like how the boards are very long and it’s hard to pass to the next level. It is hard to play with tapping the screen for the flippers. I wish the game was real with buttons. I would recommend this game for people who like pinball.

PinOut is not your average pinball game. Instead of one board, it features nearly endless multiple boards. You’re trying to go farther and farther. The graphics are slick and the music has a futuristic feel. Downside is there are no continues without buying the premium version. The physics don’t feel right but it’s still a blast.

PinOut is a game that’s a recreation of a neon-style pinball machine. You tap left and right to move the flippers. Pinball has always been fun to me in real life so I really enjoyed playing this simple game. The music is really, really awesome and I like the graphics too. It is a really good time killing title. I really wasn’t that impressed with this game. When you roll your character, the graphics aren’t very smooth and the controls don’t always react the way they should. Although there are a few easy puzzles to enjoy for younger players, I felt it got way too difficult quickly, possibly making it frustrating for younger players.

This beautifully artistic game is charming in many aspects, from it’s painted backgrounds with muted color schemes, to it’s simple puzzles to entertain the younger crowd. You can also customize the little character you control, collecting more accessories as you solve puzzles. Unfortunately it falls into the ‘freemium’ category.

This game had me hooked. I kept telling myself, “One more and I’m done.” Before I knew it my battery on my phone was nearly gone. It’s such a clever and cute puzzle game! My only gripe is that the controls along the screen were not as responsive as I expected. It took multiple attempts to control the objects and characters..

I like this game for many reasons. I like how you can decorate the character. I like how you have to think outside the box to solve the puzzle. You can start over if you mess up and keep trying until you solve the puzzle. I don’t like how the character is shaped like a marble. I wish he or she looked more detailed. DIGITAL EDITION
