Support your local Farmers’ Market

On a weekend all over Perth, you’ll find local farmers’ markets. They are great for catching up with friends and neighbours, while meeting some of the people who produce our food. These markets are like a breath of fresh air (literally!) – and you’ll find food at the peak of its freshness (no long-distance shipping or sitting for weeks in cold storage). A regular trip to a farmers’ market is one of the best ways to connect with where your food comes from and a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced; and farmers’ markets offer more than just food: local designers and artists, drinks, and local musicians, to name just a few.

Electrical & plumbing expert tips

Npower WA Electrical Services are your local electrical experts

The ‘why’ of power outages

Power outages at home can happen for a few simple reasons. Storms are a big one – with power lines being knocked out by things including lightning, wind and fallen branches. Faulty wiring or overloaded circuits inside the house can also trip the power. Sometimes, maintenance or upgrades by your electricity provider cause short, planned outages. And of course, curious pets or garden work can occasionally interfere with outdoor cables. If it happens a lot, it’s best to get it checked out to see what’s going on.

Proud Plumbing & Gas are your local plumbing experts

What causes water hammer?

That loud banging noise when you turn off a tap isn’t a ghost in the pipes - it’s water hammer. It happens when flowing water suddenly stops or changes direction, creating a shockwave that rattles your plumbing. It’s most common when taps or valves close too quickly or are faulty; It can also happen when pipework isn’t clipped correctly. Over time, those vibrations can loosen fittings or even damage joints, so it’s worth getting it checked out.

Security doors & windows

Paul, from Homestead Industries has over 40 years’ experience in the security screen industry. His family business can manufacture and install custom-built, high-quality doors and screens with most products available within 10-14 days.

Screenguard stainless steel doors & screens

These screens will secure your home without spoiling your view. Screenguard screens are made from a single sheet of 316 marine grade stainless steel, locked into an aluminium frame without rivets and screws.

• Highly resistant to corrosion

• Manufactured to Australian Standards

• Easy to keep clean

• 10-year warranty

• Bush fire tested

Aluminium security doors & screens

Paul has something for every budget. Aluminium grille security doors and window screens feature 7mm grilles, quality fly screens, and are available in a variety of patterns and colours.

Roller shutters

For extra security on your windows try a roller shutter. They are great for keeping out the heat and sound, and you can choose an automatic or manual roller.

Extra options on security doors & screens include:

• Self-closing sliding doors (pool regulations)

• Doors with triple locks

• Doors with pet mesh

• Pet doors

• Vision mesh (one-way effect)

Bulbs for beginners

Late March to early May is the perfect time to plant spring-flowering bulbs in pots or in the garden. Start with these bulbs which are the easiest to grow in Perth’s temperate climate.

Location: Sunny spot with well-draining soil

Preparation: Improve soil with compost and bulb fertiliser

Anemone and ranunculus

Water: Water deeply in the early morning or late afternoon during the growing period

Fertilise: Every 2-3 weeks with a liquid plant food once shoots appear

After flowering: Remove spent flowers but allow the leaves to die back completely. This replenishes the bulb for next year’s blooms.

Babiana (baboon flowers)

Violet, mauve, white and magenta flowers which can be left to grow year after year. Great as border plants. Cut babiana flowers regularly during the growing season.

Freesia

Highly perfumed flowers in a huge variety of colours - freesias are very tough and come back year after year with very little attention.

Jonquil

Very adaptable, early flowering and fragrant. Jonquils are like mini daffodils.

Sparaxis

(harlequin flower)

Colourful striking flowers in a variety of colours with black markings. Plant them in clumps to maximise their visual impact

Grow from corms, which are planted with the ‘claws’ facing downwards. They flower in hues of red, pink and blue and look great together. Soak the corms in lukewarm water for 2-3 hours before planting in a sunny position. For best results plant new corms each year.

HYACINTH IN A VASE

Grow a hyacinth in a vase indoors with nothing but water! It’s fascinating to watch the roots grow daily, and you’ll end up with a fragrant bloom that lasts about two weeks. Wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs as they can cause irritation.

z Choose a squat vase with a narrow neck and place the bulb in the top of the vase, pointy end up.

z Fill the vase with water to just below the base of the bulb.

z Place the vase in a cool dark cupboard and wait for roots to develop and grow down into the water (4-6 weeks).

z A shoot will eventually develop and once it’s about 6cm tall, place the vase in a well-lit spot and wait for the flower to bloom.

z Check water level regularly and top up as needed.

Stormproof Roofing is a family-owned business in Willetton with focus on customer satisfaction and quality workmanship. Stormproof can assist you with all your tiled roofing requirements, from repairs to a complete roof restoration.

Add value to your home

After about 15 years your tiled roof begins to wear and show signs of damage. The paint fades, and dirt, moss and lichen build up on the tiles. Ridge capping can also crack, causing leaks which could further damage your home.

Affordable and long lasting

A typical roof restoration takes 2-3 days and is the affordable way to make your roof look like new. Luke is one of only a few accredited Dulux applicators in Perth. He uses high quality materials and gives a 10 -year guarantee on the paint, ridge capping, primer and workmanship. Your home will be left clean and tidy after the job is finished.

Your tiled roof restoration will include:

Full roof inspection

Broken & damaged tiles replaced, to prevent future leaks

Roof is high pressure cleaned

Ridge capping is sealed using a flexible compound

Anti-fungus treatment applied

hints Handy home

Practical tips and clever ideas to make your life easier.

Shadow Fun

A fun and creative activity for kids is to place interesting objects or plants in the sunlight and trace their shadows on some paper. This simple idea works beautifully for making cards, wrapping paper, or unique art pieces.

Easy Peasy

Use a staple remover to open a keyring, making it easy to add or remove keys without hurting your fingers.

Friendly deterrent

Spritz the areas of your home where you’ve noticed spider activity with a peppermint oil spray. Mix 10 drops of peppermint oil for every 100 ml of water in a spray bottle and shake well before use.

Secret Weapon

Add several sticks of chalk to your toolbox, creating a simple moisture‑absorbing buffer to help prevent rust from forming on your tools.

Jam Makers

Placing the jam jar upside down while the jam is still hot will create a vacuum seal, keeping it fresher for longer and reducing the chance of any unwanted bacteria sneaking in.

3 uses for Pool Noodles

1 Cut a small piece of a pool noodle, slit it lengthwise, and place it on the edge of a door, cupboard, or gate to cushion impact and protect little fingers.

2 Cut pool noodles to the right length and place them inside your boots to keep them upright while in storage.

3 Measure and cut a pool noodle to the length of trampoline springs, slit it lengthwise, and fit it over each spring to reduce the risk of accidents.

Egg Freshness

To check whether an egg is fresh, place it in a bowl of cool water and watch how it behaves. If it sinks, it’s good to use — but if it floats to the top and bobs around, it’s time to toss it out and grab a fresher one.

Steam Clean Microwave

Loosen grease and food residue without harsh chemicals by microwaving a bowl of water with a few cut lemons for 3–5 minutes, or until the water boils and the window fills with steam.

Why writing a will matters

No one knows what the future will bring, so for peace-of-mind, everyone over the age of 18 should consider having a will.

Without a will

Without a will, you’re considered to have died intestate, and distribution is handled strictly under the Administration Act 1903 (WA). When this happens, your debts are paid first, and whatever remains is divided according to a set of legal rules. These consider your estate and your family structure, but they may not reflect your personal wishes because intestacy laws don’t allow for personal preferences.

Secure your wishes

To make sure your assets go to the people you choose, you need a properly drafted will.

It’s also important to tell a trusted person where the original document is stored. If it can’t be located after your death, the law treats the situation as though there is no will at all.

Professional advice

DIY will kits might seem convenient, but getting professional legal advice is the safest way to create a will that’s accurate, valid and genuinely reflects your intentions.

When the sun is shining, frozen fruit treats are fun to make with the kids, and a great way to use up ripe fruit or make the most of frozen berries.

Frozen fruity yoghurt crisp

Mix Greek yoghurt with a little honey and frozen berries, spread thinly on baking paper and freeze for 2 hours. Break into crunchy pieces and enjoy straight from the freezer.

Smoothie icy poles

Blend fruit with yoghurt or milk and a drizzle of honey. Pour into moulds and freeze.

Fruit slushie

Blend frozen fruit with a little water until icy and smooth.

Banana ice cream

Blend frozen ripe bananas until smooth and creamy – it tastes just like real ice cream but without all the added sugar.

Berry yoghurt cubes

Combine frozen berries with Greek yoghurt, spoon into an ice cube tray and freeze for 2 hours.

Chocolate banana pops

Insert sticks into banana halves, freeze, then dip in melted chocolate. Enjoy right away or refreeze for later.
