Did you know that slower driving makes you more aware of your environment, and more likely to react safely to hazards (such as a child running out into the road)?

Did you also know that increasing your speed - even by just a few km per hour increases your braking distance significantly and increases your risk of a crash, serious injury and death?

Driving more slowly and carefully means less stress for you and for other road users around you, which makes for a much more relaxing drive. And as a bonus there will be less wear and tear on your car, along with the lower fuel consumption that comes with driving more slowly!

Tips for pruning roses

Prune your roses while they are dormant in late winter or early spring, before new growth appears. This allows your plants to recover and prepare for the active growing season ahead. Here’s a few tips for great results.

Use sharp tools

Always use clean, sharp tools to minimise damage to the plant.

Begin by removing unwanted branches

Prune confidently!

Dead or damaged wood: Remove any dead, diseased, or damaged canes and branches.

Suckers from grafted roses: Suckers are shoots that grow from the rootstock below the graft. These should be removed to prevent them from taking energy away from the rose bush.

Crossing branches: Remove branches that are crossing or rubbing each other to improve airflow and prevent disease.

Cut at a 45-degree angle

Make cuts at a 45-degree angle just above an outward-facing bud. Angle away from the bud so water runs off. Cutting back stems to outward-facing buds will promote a more open and balanced shape.

Depending on the type of rose and its age, you can prune lightly, moderately, or severely:

Light pruning: Remove less than a third of the plant. Suitable for young or newly-planted roses, and climbing roses.

Moderate pruning: Cut the plant down to about knee high, leaving around 8 healthy shoots from the base.

Severe pruning: Cut back the plant significantly. This will leave it looking bare but will encourage vigorous new growth.

Clean up debris promptly

Dispose of fallen leaves, flowers, and pruning debris to prevent the spread of disease.

Fertilise after pruning

After pruning, fertilise your rose bushes with a balanced fertiliser to support recovery.

Handy refresh

A few drops of micellar water on a facial cotton pad can quickly freshen up sneakers before your next wear.

3 uses for eucalyptus oil

1 Use it as bin deodorant by leaving a cotton facial pad with a few drops of oil under the bin liner to neutralise odours.

2 Steam inhalation of 12 drops of eucalyptus oil and 3/4 cup of hot water (not boiling) in a shallow bowl helps clear congestion and soothe coughs.

3 Soothe Muscles by massaging diluted eucalyptus oil into sore muscles for relief. Mix in a bowl, 1-2 drops of oil to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or jojoba oil before applying to the skin.

Immerse an egg in a pan of cool, salted water to determine whether an egg is fresh. If it sinks to the bottom, it’s fresh – if it rises to the surface, throw it out immediately to avoid unpleasant surprises!

School’s out

Place some pre-cut icy poles into a large insulated drink bottle for the perfect after school treat on the drive home. Happy days!

Wax it

Use a piece of sticky tap or packing tape to wax off those retail barcode stickers on the base of items. Rub a piece of tape over the whole sticker, leave enough to use as a pull tab and pull quickly!

Keep it simple

Remove 21 items from your home every day for a week! This is an easy and effective way to declutter your home. Either donate, sell, dispose or repurpose the items you no longer need.

Honey Garlic Chicken Tenders

z 4 cloves garlic, crushed

z 2 tbs honey

z 2 tbs soy sauce

z 2 tbs sweet chilli sauce

z 1 tbs white vinegar

z 2 tbs water

z 3 tbs plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper

z 600g chicken tenderloins

z 2-3 tbs vegetable oil

z Garnish: Sliced spring onions, sesame seeds

z To serve: Steamed jasmine rice, broccolli

In a small bowl, combine the garlic, honey, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, white vinegar and water. Set aside.

Place the plain flour in a separate bowl and season with salt and pepper. Toss the chicken tenderloins in the flour to coat. Shake off any excess flour.

Heat the oil in a large frypan over medium heat and cook the chicken tenderloins for 2-3 minutes each side until golden and cooked through. Do this in two batches so the pan is not overcrowded. Remove chicken and set aside.

Add the garlic honey sauce mixture to the pan and stir it well, using the mixture to deglaze the pan. Cook for a minute or two until it reduces and thickens.

Return chicken tenderloins to the pan and toss to coat.

Serve over steamed jasmine rice and broccolli, and garnish with sliced spring onions and sesame seeds.

TIME SAVERS

shower tips Time saving

We could all do with a little more time; so here are a few easy time-saving tips when it comes to your morning shower routine.

Q If you have a crumpled outfit, hang it in your bathroom while showering to get rid of/ reduce the wrinkles.

Q Invest in a shower cap and don’t wash your hair (it doesn’t need to be washed every day).

Q Use dry shampoo – just give your hair a quick spray and no-one will ever know!

Q Turn the temperature down – so it’s not tempting to stay in the shower too long!

Q Time your shower to your favourite song or use a shower timer.

Q All-in-one products are a time-saver, so try a combined shampoo and conditioner – or go even further and use a combined shampoo, conditioner, and body wash! There are even shower gels and moisturisers combined.

Q Shave or brush your teeth while showering.

Q Rinse the shower and screen after use and squeegee dry to reduce grime build-up.

Growing veggies with kids

Growing your own veggies is a great way to get your kids into gardening; and as a bonus, they are much more likely to eat them!

Getting started

You don’t need a massive garden, you can use a raised bed, or different containers for each type of fruit or vegetable. As long as you keep the ground well aerated and drained, your vegetable garden should thrive.

Location

Edible plants prefer full sun, so choose a sunny spot close to your house – this will make it easier to keep an eye on (for things such as weeds and pests) and for watering if you don’t have an automatic sprinkler system.

Planting

The ideal veggie garden will produce all year round, so check growing conditions and planting calendars for different times of the year (this is also important for your veggie garden to grow successfully!).

Great starter plants include:

Q Peas/sugar snap peas/snow peas

Q Cherry tomatoes

Q Lettuce

Q Baby carrots
