Fuchsias, known for their elegant flowers in shades of pink, purple and white, can be fussy plants, but with careful placement and consistent care, your efforts will be rewarded with vibrant blooms that bring life and colour for many months.
Choosing the right variety
In Perth’s hot, dry summers, it’s essential to select heat-tolerant fuchsia varieties, such as the ‘Shadow Dancer’ series, or ‘Electric Lights’ hybrid bred for warmer climates.
Location
Fuchsias prefer dappled shade with morning sun, and must be protected from wind and the harsh afternoon heat. Ideal spots include under patios, on shaded verandas, or in areas that receive filtered light.
It’s a good idea to place potted fuchsias on wheeled plant stands so they can be easily repositioned out of the sun or wind as needed.
Soil and planting
Fuchsias thrive in rich, free-draining soil. Sandy soils will need to be enriched with plenty of organic matter or quality potting mix to help retain moisture. If growing in pots or hanging baskets, use a premium mix with added waterholding granules. Ensure containers have good drainage to prevent root rot.
Watering and feeding
Regular watering is crucial, particularly during hot spells when twice-daily watering may be needed. The goal is to keep the soil evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.
Mulching helps to keep roots cool and reduce evaporation. Feed every two to three weeks in the growing season (spring to autumn) with a liquid fertiliser high in potassium to encourage strong flowering.
Pruning and maintenance
After flowering, prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Heavier pruning can be done in late winter before new shoots appear.
Watch for pests like aphids and whiteflies, treating them early with insecticidal soap if needed. For heavy infestations, pruning affected leaves or branches might be the best approach. For a waterwise, low-maintenance option consider Correa (Native Fuchsia), a winterflowering plant that resembles a fuchsia.

You will need
Q Masking tape
Q Finger paint – or any paint that’s not too thin!
Q Thick white paper or card – or you could use a small canvas
Q Zip lock bags slightly larger than the card/canvas you are using
1. Squeeze blobs of paint over your canvas/card.
2. Put the card/paper carefully into the zip lock bag and close it properly.
3. You can tape it to the table or surface you are using so it doesn’t move around too much.
4. Let your toddler splat, squish, squeeze and move the paint around anyway they like.
5. When the masterpiece is complete, remove the tape and carefully cut around the zip lock bag and peel away the top layer and allow to dry.
