Senior center crosswalk improvements planned BY RIKKI MASSAND At the July 17 meeting, the Garden City Board of Trustees and senior staff reviewed several ongoing capital projects, including improvements aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety for visitors to the Garden City Senior Center. Trustee Vinny Muldoon

raised concerns about the crosswalk at Golf Club Lane near Eleventh Street. He praised recent re-striping efforts and emphasized the importance of improved visibility, especially ahead of shorter daylight hours in the fall and winter. “Based on the requests

from several great seniors in our community we talked about this crosswalk and the needs for lighting there. I know we are working hard on this, and earlier today the guys were out to do the remarkings on the crosswalk to make it ‘pop’ – as I was over See page 22

At its July 17 meeting, the Garden City Traffic Commission discussed traffic calming initiatives along First Street, including the long-considered idea of a roundabout and the newly funded “gateway” design near Cherry Valley Avenue. These projects aim to reduce cut-through traffic and improve pedestrian safety near the Garden City Nursery School and Community Park. A proposed extension of the eastbound left-turn lane on First Street at Rockaway Avenue, first requested last fall, was again deferred, but it is now part of a broader strategy to improve traffic flow and safety. The conversation has evolved into a multi-phase approach, combining physical infrastructure changes and strategic planning. Back in November 2024, the Commission noted that Nassau County was exploring the possibility of installing a traffic light at Cambridge Avenue and First Street, while resident Bob Baker had begun circulating a petition for traffic calming. Since then, the project has returned for discussion several times, including at the March and May 2025 meetings. See page 6

Police issued 1,710 parking tickets, 1,197 traffic summonses, and one appearance ticket. Ten vehicles were impounded. See page 22
