Ryder Cup could bring tourism surge BY RIKKI MASSAND The Village of Garden City anticipates that the 2025 Ryder Cup golf tournament will bring a wave of new visitors—and their spending power—to the village’s vibrant downtown. During the June 26 Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Vinny Muldoon discussed potential enhancements and beautification efforts in preparation for the major sporting event. The Ryder Cup, set to take place at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale from September 23 to 28, is expected
to draw global attention and boost local commerce, especially in hospitality and dining. The Ryder Cup, established 98 years ago and held biennially, features Team Europe— led this year by captain Luke Donald and star Irish golfer Rory McIlroy—facing off against Team USA, captained by Keegan Bradley, a St. John’s University alum. Scottie Scheffler, ranked No. 1 in the world as of June, will also compete for the U.S. Trustee Muldoon shared that the Garden City Hotel has already been booked for
the week of the tournament. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential for local engagement. “The Ryder Cup week is going to be a huge week in this village. There will be a ton of people from out of town, but more importantly it will be a great week for the residents to come out and celebrate one of the most amazing international events in sports as a whole. It will be great to host so many people for the celebrations around the Ryder Cup but to me it’s to showcase See page 28
This fall, Garden City residents will finally hear what their neighbors think about the future of the historic St. Paul’s building—and gain insight into the direction the village might take for its next use. During the Village Board of Trustees’ June 26 meeting, resident John Peter Coll raised questions about the status of the long-awaited St. Paul’s survey results. In response, village officials outlined the timeline for data analysis and the anticipated public presentation. “I just want to make an observation as for a few weeks I was traveling, and I returned back and have talked with some neighbors. Is St. Paul’s languishing? We don’t see much going on and we know there was a survey, but we’ve been told the results of it will not be disclosed until some time in the fall. Trustee (Vinny) Muldoon also heads a committee that has been meeting for quite See page 16
West section neighbors urge Village to halt lot split BY RIKKI MASSAND A family that has lived on New Hyde Park Road in Garden City since 1994 came to the Village Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, June 26, expressing concern about new home construction plans in their Western section neighborhood. The visit followed their appearance at the June 24 Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) meeting, where the project was presented. Mother and daughter Geraldine O’Neill Marino and Jacqueline Marino told the Board that the proposed development could disrupt the quiet, residential character of their neighborhood near St. Anne’s Church and School. Two agenda items presented to the ADRB on June 24 concerned applications from Stonecrest Holdings Inc. to construct separate homes at 1 and 3 Princeton Street—on what was See page 21
