Warning on scam donation bins

Business leader reflects on year's successes, challenges BY RIKKI MASSAND

Supervisor Joseph Saladino warns residents to be vigilant when making donations of any kind this holiday season. The Town of Oyster Bay has cautioned residents who leave donations in collection bins to make sure the organizations behind those bins have good intentions. Particularly during the holiday season, Town officials have witnessed a proliferation in illegally-placed bins asking residents to drop off clothing or toy donations. Many of these structures appear to be homemade, contain stencil lettering and no sign of

legitimacy. “With the holiday season upon us, many people are looking for ways to help others, especially during this pandemic,” said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Unfortunately this time of year is also when we begin to see this particular type of scam. We want to make sure our residents are vigilant when it comes to making donations, and to be sure they are

As 2021 comes to a close, the president of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce noted that some of the same challenges that began the year and persisted in 2020 have unfortunately returned, due to the surge of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 across Long Island and throughout the nation. Russell Green of Syosset is a 22-year resident of the community and president of his firm RPG Wealth Management, Inc. Last December, Green was elected President after being a member of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber’s board of directors. “When I was selected to lead the Chamber, it was an honor to be chosen to head such a wonderful organization and follow in the footsteps of the talented business leaders that have preceded me. I was lucky to have five former Chamber presidents on the board to rely on for guidance and advice. After a summer and fall of relative normalcy, we are once again facing uncertain times as the pandemic is dominating the headlines. Rest assured, the Syosset Woodbury Chamber is here and will do its very best. I am truly honored to be continuing to lead this great organization in 2022 – and the Chamber will follow any health and safety protocols when we hold in-person events in the upcoming year,” he said in late December. Thanks to the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, the Syosset Woodbury Chamber distributed thousands of cloth masks and dozens of gallons of hand sanitizer to its members. For the second year in a row, the chamber secured a PSEG Revitalization Grant to help local restaurants who have struggled with mandates and restrictions since March 2020. In May of 2021, the Chamber awarded two $1,000 scholarships to worthy Syosset High School seniors, Maiya Raghu and Maxwell Spiller. One scholarship was named in honor of long-time board member, Deborah Parisi, who passed away in November of 2020 at age 61. The other scholarship was presented on behalf of the over 140 Syosset Woodbury Chamber members. The Chamber started 2021 by hosting Zoom meetings in which Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Legislator Lafazan addressed issues of local concern and participated in question and answer sessions with members.
