Over the past several months the Syosset Central School District has worked to enhance its official Code of Conduct to become a “Code of Conduct, Character and Support,” according to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers. Groups of students worked with administrators to write a revamped ‘plain language’ Code of Conduct for the district. In turn, a group of teachers worked on a plain language Code for teachers and a group of parents worked on one for them and their fellow parents. The school board voted to adopt the new Code at its November 18 meeting, minutes after viewing a video presentation from students and faculty including two “Teacher Voices” -- Jill Bentivegna and Amy Aiosa. Dr. Rogers said this multi-faceted, collaborative effort was successful in “breathing new life into the new Code of Conduct.” The new Code of Conduct states that teachers, principals, administrators, schools staff and parents and the larger community have an obligation to help students learn to be good citizens and lead productive lives by “enabling them to discern right from wrong; fostering in them a desire to do what is right, and requiring students to take responsibility for their words and actions.”
The Syosset Parent Code of Conduct Writing Team advised that as a community in Syosset/Woodbury, students can be strongly supported to develop into good citizens with strong moral character and a growth mindset. “This will help them to become active participants in our global society,” the team comments. The presentation on November 18 included ways of developing social and emotional competencies in students, which “contribute to improved academic and personal outcomes and enable students to learn and practice how to manage their emotions, set goals, create positive relationships, make good choices and feel and show empathy for others.” School Board President Tracy Frankel thanked the faculty, staff, students and volunteer community members who helped the district with its efforts to revamp the written Code of Conduct. “We (the school board) often hear about what is going on in our schools but to have this presented to us just gives us a whole other level of understanding of the commitment that you all have demonstrated and that we all share! Thank you all so much,” Frankel said. Dr. Rogers noted that as district students worked on the plain language Code for the youngest See page 18
