Team members (all Syosset High School juniors): Syosset High School juniors Jishan Alam, Kyle Chan, Matt Kaboolian, Christine Bocamazo, Harneet Kaur, David Stekol, Haona Wu, Matt Batkiewicz and SHS volunteer Julia Capone with Nisha Bhalla, senior advisor of Coder School with Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan and owner/general manager of Coder School Noreen Kazi. BY RIKKI N. MASSAND On Friday night April 12 the Coder School, located at 45 Ira Road in downtown Syosset, hosted an outstanding group of Syosset High School students from the robotics team Syndicate 6438 -- a new breed of local heroes, as team Syndicate became the first Syosset High Robotics team to qualify for competition at the
World FTC Robotics Competition in Detroit, a portion of the 2019 F.I.R.S.T. Championship sponsored by Qualcomm Incorporated. At their send-off event in Syosset, eight students of team Syndicate 6438 and a high school classmate volunteer addressed Coder School kids and their parents inside the local tech training and education center. World of F.I.R.S.T.” Syosset native and Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan, who graduated from Syosset High School in 2012 and served on the board of education from 2012 through 2017, visited Coder School and congratulated team Syndicate 6438, presenting the students with an official citation from the County Legislature. The Syndicate 6438 students are Jishan Alam, Matthew Batkiewicz, Christine Bocamazo, Julia Capone (SHS volunteer), Kyle Chan, Matt Kaboolian, Harneet Kaur, David Stekol and Haona Wu. Their Robotics teacher at Syosset High School is Mr. Neal Hagan, faculty member of SHS (instructional) Technology Department. The international F.I.R.S.T. competition celebrated its 30th year this spring, founded in 1989, and the F.I.R.S.T. acronym stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” This year’s marquee event was held April 24 through 27, and tens of thousands of students from around the world who participate in K through 12 STEM programming gathered with leading industry professionals, educators, sponsors and STEM organizations. The first F.I.R.S.T. Robotics competition was held in 1992; In 1998 the F.I.R.S.T. Lego League was founded and in 2004, around the time many of Syosset’s team Syndicate 6438 students were toddlers, the F.I.R.S.T. Lego League Jr. was founded. The Syndicate team’s presentation on F.I.R.S.T. explained to parents and kids that alumni of this S.T.E.M. programming are 2.6 times more likely to enroll in an engineering course during a student’s freshman year of college than their high school peers, and over 75% of F.I.R.S.T. alumni are in a S.T.E.M. field as either a student or a professional. Students noted the core values built into F.I.R.S.T. technology programs are Discovery, Inclusion, Innovation, Impact, Teamwork, Fun, “Gracious Professionalism” and “Coopertition.” At the Coder School’s special event in April, team Syndicate 6438 students spent a Friday night helping children ages five to 12 learn some basic concepts of robotics, including connecting parts and systems to fly mini-drone helicopters and set up remote control cars, accessed through apps on tablets. Owner and general manager of the Coder School is Noreen Kazi, an active member and lead organizer for the annual SyosSee page 18
