Friends of the Garden City Library
Next year the Friends of the Garden City Public Library will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary! Established in 1952, it was very instrumental in the founding of our Village Library. Since then, the Friends have continued to provide financial support and other assistance to enhance its services and resources to the Garden City Community.
With the help of the library director and the librarians, the Friends explores patron- friendly opportunities. Currently these include programs for children, young adults and adults. Celebrations for Young Adults, cooking lessons from the Baking Coach, science classes by Chris Buchman, lectures by art historians – these are just a few of the 57 programs that are typically financed annually by the Friends. All of the Museum Passes, which allow village patrons of all ages to enter MoMA, Old Westbury Gardens, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, The Nassau County Firefighters Museum, the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Cradle of Aviation, the Empire Pass, etc., etc. etc., without having to pay an admission fee, are funded by the Friends.
This year, as we look forward to the planned renovations to the Children’s Room, we have pledged to raise $30,000 for that project. Finishing touches can then be added to the room, thus ensuring a warm, charming and creative environment in which the children can explore and discover their world.
Without the financial support of the community, the Friends could not continue its work. We must look to YOU to support the Friends by…. • Becoming a member through your contribution. • Shopping at our Book Sale Area where shelves abound with gently used donated books at giveaway prices for every age group. Hard covers fiction, soft covered fiction, a Monthly Spotlight on a different genre, Children’s and Young Adult books are replenished three times a week. • Supporting our Book Sales, Pop-Up Book and Bake Sales that are advertised throughout the year. • By purchasing Friends created merchandise, such as tote bags or holiday ornaments, highlighted in the library or at our sales. • By reaching out to any of the ladies listed below, or contacting the library
Administration Office and leaving your name if you would like to join us actively in our endeavor to enrich the entire Garden
City community.
If you are new to the community, we urge you to take advantage of all the library as to offer and also to become a member of the Friends. To all our regular contributors, we offer a sincere thank you. Together we help our library continue its tradition as a dynamic resource for our community.
