The Garden City Board of Trustees, at its Thursday August 13 meeting, approved a $42,000 increase for the project planning for Fire Station No. 2, located at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Edgemere Road in the western section. The change includes having consulting architects include an additional 2,500 square feet of “useable space due to the increased size of fire apparatus” while keeping traditional appearance of the station. The project’s change order approved last week increased the architectural design cost of Fire Station No. 2 from a $300,000 sum to $342,000. The original project was first approved at a meeting on March 19th which had no public attendance, and which was not recorded. The full cost of the project has been estimated to be at least $8 million and may exceed $10 million. Fire Chief Thomas Strysko described the agenda item last Thursday before the Board of Trustees approved the additional cost along with the rest of the meeting’s agenda items. “With this change order to plans and specifications for PKAD, if you remember at our July 16 Board of Trustees’ meeting we had a presentation from the firm on design changes for Station No. 2 to move forward, At that time we did not have a cost associated with those design changes. This change order reflects that design change -- $42,000 -- and we’re seeking Board approval to move forward with this change order,” Chief Strysko said. Garden City Mayor Theresa Trouvé commented that she had a look at the Babylon Fire Station and the room that was on the second floor of that fire station project. She asked Chief Strysko about the virtual reality simulation of examining the project design PKAD has offered, “going through the entire station as it would be when it is entirely built.” She asked Chief Strysko to make a comparison between the Babylon station’s second floor and the simulation for Garden City’s western station. “Unfortunately to keep the look of the existing firehouse we could not just change the square footage of the station -- we only need the square footage on the first floor increased to accommodate the longer fire truck. Unfortunately to keep the symmetry of

The Donovan family appreciates the work done by the Garden City Sanitation Department, especially truck 213. The children love looking for the “big trucks” in their neighborhood every week. The guys on the truck even presented each of the children on the block with their own miniature Garden City Sanitation toy trucks.
