School district outlines new elementary English curriculum

A new English/Language Arts curriculum for Garden City’s students will be implemented during the 2021-22 school year, said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Edward Cannone during the Board of Education’s July meeting.

The implementation of a new curriculum includes testing (assessments) for the elementary grade level students so GCUFSD “can find the right levels for students to determine what sort of instruction students can receive.”

This summer the district will have a timeline for teachers’ and administrators’ professional development in the new Word Study curriculum “Words Their Way.” Educators in the district will be trained to understand nuances before the new curriculum is implemented, and there will be on-demand computer coursework available for continued learning and reference.

School board approves administrators, contracts at Friday night meeting

BY RIKKI MASSAND The Garden City Board of Education ratified an agreement with the Garden City Administrators’ Association, for the period of July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2024, at a special board meeting held at the Garden City Middle School cafeteria the evening of Friday, July 30.

The ratification of the agreement with the GCAA comes weeks after the school board approved two supplemental memorandums of agreement (MOA’s) with organizations representing employees at its regular July meeting on Tuesday, July 6. At the time the board approved a supplemental MOA between the Garden City Union Free School

New program for grades 3-5

As part of the presentation delivered at the July 6 board of education meeting, Dr. Cannone discussed three choices for Word Study (English/Language Arts) implementation in 2021-2022 for all grades under sixth. The recommendation made by an in-district committee was for the board to approve the Words Their Way curriculum, a Pearson program that Cannone said “meets the needs for all of our students.” It will be implemented for all students in every Garden City elementary school classroom at Stewart and Stratford schools, third through fifth grades.

Testing for Words Their Way would provide teachers with an entry point for instruction in classroom settings “in order to meet the needs of students in their classes.”

Dr. Cannone said as school year 2021-2022 goes on the district will continue providing teachers and educators with ongoing professional development and coaching related to the Words Their Way program. This will include “a large bank” of professional development videos for teachers to watch online to gain a deeper understanding of Words Their Way. “We want to provide multiple opportunities for teachers to receive good, strong professional development so that we make the most of our teaching and assessments. This program really equips the district with great tools for instruction and differentiation. The way Words Their Way is designed, it is organized to

Masks and vaccines In last week’s editorial we urged parents to not attack members of the school board or the administration if New York requires masks for students when schools reopen in the fall.

However, as we are finishing up the paper on Thursday morning, Newsday is reporting that the state appears to be kicking the issue back to the local districts. According to the article, the NY Council of School Superintendents said that neither the governor nor the state Department of Health plans to issue guidance on the reopening of schools, so it may be up to the local districts to decide.

If this turns out to be the case, we hope that the Board of Education considers all of the recommendations by

public health officials that are based on science to make their decisions.

The district could decide to require all employees to be vaccinated, and with the probable full FDA approval of at least one vaccine in the next couple of months, that seems like a reasonable course of action.

The CDC has been recommending that all unvaccinated people over the age of 2 wear masks in indoor public settings, and again, that seems like good advice to heed.

While Covid-19 among children is usually mild, there has been a rising number of children in the south who have become very ill. The district should do its utmost to protect its students and employees.

Cost savings vs. run down spaces

To the Editor: Last week I wrote a Letter to the Editor drawing attention to the obvious decline in the care and maintenance of Village spaces such as parking lots, green spaces and flower beds. Despite years of complaints about the constant presence of garbage and overgrown weeds in parking lots, for example, the situation has just gotten worse and the complaints of residents and merchants alike are ignored.

Many residents commented on the online version of the GC News, agreeing with my points and sharing information. For example: Con Kel was hired to do much of the landscaping work formally performed by Village Parks Department employees to save money.

Con Kel’s work has been repeatedly criticized as sloppy and incomplete, yet their annual one year contract has been renewed again and again. One person who commented to my letter wrote that this outsourcing has saved the Village “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

This begs the questions: what is being done with the savings and must we trade cost savings for run down public spaces? Why can’t Con Kel be held to a higher standard?

Similarly, the staffing level in the Parks Department has been reduced in recent years, which apparently adds to the problem. Why and if it was to save money, what has been done with those cost savings? Village taxes go up each year, not down.

Finally, several people noted that the Village has been without a full time arborist for years. What was done with those salary savings? The lack of an arborist to oversee the planting, care and, when necessary, removal of trees is more than aesthetic issues… it is a safety issue. We have experienced many severe storms in recent years, which brought down trees on private and public land. If public trees are not properly maintained, they may be a hazard at any time, with falling branches, etc., but

especially during a severe storm.

I hope the BoT follow up on these issues, which are clearly important to residents.

Tanners Pond Road Bridge

To the Editor: To my knowledge, as of the writing of this letter, the board of trustees of the Village of Garden City has not changed its embarrassing decision not to grant a permit to the MTA for the construction of the third track bridge over the one lane road known as Denton Ave and also known as Tanners Pond Road. In the July 23rd editorial, Newsday pointed out what a huge mistake this is for Garden City and all Long Island. It pointed out that “Garden City officials sent a letter that the MTA officials are calling ‘ransom note’ seeking $10 million and additional perks”. The editorial went on for a full page detailing reason after reason why the actions of the Village are so upsetting and almost “legal blackmail”.

The recent letter to the G.C. News (7/30/21) by village resident Robert Foxen, also pointed out the many flaws in the strategy the Village trustees have played and are playing with the MTA, all of which will adversely affect the village and region. The project is one and a half years away from completion, with all the benefits that flow from that, including noise reduction and $1,000, 000 in landscaping to the village, etc.,etc.

The refusal by the trustees to grant this permit over Tanners Pond Road is more than an embarrassment to the Village, it is an outright mistake and should be reversed as soon as possible.

The Garden City Public Schools recently introduced new administrators Lauren Kaufman and Michael Vespe as Stratford Elementary School assistant principal and director of literacy K–12, respectively.

They will both commence their new

roles in August.

With more than 14 years of experience in educational administration, Ms. Kaufman has held roles as a middle school literacy specialist, instructional coach and reading specialist in the Long Beach Public Schools.

She served as an instructional leader in four elementary buildings, contributed to a comprehensive middle school plan, organized units of study for reading and writing, led many curriculum initiatives and planned literacy activities, among other responsibilities. She has led a wealth of professional development presentations and mentorship activities to support faculty members, and also supervised the district’s Creativity Camp.

Ms. Kaufman obtained her Educational Leadership Certificate from Stony Brook University, her Master of Science degree from Hofstra University and her Bachelor of Arts degree from CUNY Hunter College. She taught second grade for several years in Queens prior to her work in Long Beach.

Mr. Vespe comes to Garden City from the New York City Department of Education District 25, where he served as instructional support specialist and pilot coordinator. He facilitated professional learning pilots, models and opportunities that addressed the schools’ needs.

Previously, he was a regional com-

mon core achievement coach for the NYC Department of Education’s Children First Network 531 and Children First Network 535. In that capacity, he supported, led and collaborated with administrators and staff members on curriculum projects and instructional practices.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Vespe was a literacy coach/staff developer and teacher in I.S. 238 Susan B. Anthony Academy. He holds an Advanced Certificate in educational leadership from the College of Saint Rose, a Master of Science degree from Dowling College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Stony Brook.

“As many members of the district and community know, we conducted a thorough search process for both of these positions and spent time interviewing many qualified candidates,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha. “Ms. Kaufman and Mr. Vespe impressed us with their backgrounds and commitment to student learning, and I am pleased to have them on our team — they will both be valuable assets to our schools.”

Walk Street owner elected president

BY GARY SIMEONE It was a July to remember for Floral Park resident Robert Kloepfer, as he was elected president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC.) Kloepfer, who owns Walk Street Restaurant in Garden City, was elected at the Association’s 115th annual weeklong conference, which took place in Syracuse.

“It was a great honor for me because I’ve been involved with the Association of Fire Chiefs for almost twenty years and I’ve gone through the ranks to get to this point," said Kloepfer, who is ex-chief of the Floral Park Fire Department.

Kloepfer said that his interest in joining the fire department started when he was a little boy when he used to go on calls with his father who was than chief of the New Hyde Park Fire department.

“It’s been a family affair being involved with the fire department. I ended up being a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department for seven years before moving on to join Floral Park where I’ve been a member for the last thirty-four years."

His other honors include serving as president of the Floral Park Fire Department Exempt Fireman’s Association for six years and serving as chairman of the First Battalion Chiefs of the Nassau County Fire Commission in 2016. He is also the past president of the Executive Council of Firematic Organizations of Nassau County.

Kloepfer, who took over as owner of Walk Street in 2005, said the business has done well despite the pandemic restrictions that were put in place.

“We’ve made some changes by cutting our operations down to six days per week and we’ve closed our lunch menu for the time being. We haven’t lost our usual customers though and the majority of people who come in are

He said the restaurant is thoroughly sanitized once a week on Mondays to ensure the safety of the staff and customers.

Aside from his long tenure in the fire department, Kloepfer is a culinary expert, having worked for twenty-five years in the food service industry.

His list of credits include having worked for top tier hotels in Manhattan such as The Pierre Hotel ,and the former Drake and Rihga Royal Hotels.

He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York and did his apprenticeship at Windows on the World at the original World Trade Center.

GC Girl Scouts receive Gold Awards

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently recognized over 70 local Girl Scouts who earned the distinguished Girl Scout Gold Award during a drive-through celebration.

The Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. Members of the Garden City Service Unit, including Marisa Fernandez, Sarah Fetherston, Jacqueline Kelly, Maryann Savino, and Lindsay Stevenson, were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

Girls in grades 9–12 commence their Gold Award journey by selecting a civic or social issue they feel deeply about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Gold Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others through the process.

“The skills the girls gained by completing their Gold Award projects will last them a lifetime,” said Rande Bynum, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We are thrilled to celebrate this exceptional class of young women. I admire this elite group of girls who have shown a commitment to their projects and bettering their communities through these unprecedented times. It is a testament to not only their dedication but also to our mission of instilling courage, confidence, and character in Girl Scouts who make the world a better place.”

The Gold Award Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held deep significance to them.

Marisa provided a food source and habitat for birds with her Gold Award project “Winter Garden.” Marisa partnered with Centennial Gardens to build a garden with a variety of plants that produce different kinds of nuts

and seeds that birds can eat during the winter. Marisa also repaired nesting boxes that were broken or were no longer bird-specific. In addition, she designed a website that contains information on how deforestation, farming, urbanization, and climate change negatively impact birds, the role they play in our ecosystem, and how others can help protect habitats.

Marisa’s garden will continue to sustain itself and act as a reminder of how her community can protect its local ecosystem.

As a recent graduate of Dominican Academy on the Upper East Side, Marisa enjoys playing video games, drawing, and animating. Her fondest Girl Scout memory is her troop’s trip to Hershey Park. Marisa is a recipient of several merit scholarships and will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where she will be majoring in game and simulation arts and science.

For Sarah’s Gold Award project entitled, “Lockdown,” she created a web series that shows the response of 11 teenagers experiencing an active shooter in their school. The series highlights additional important topics such as abortion, abuse, depression, suicide, and LGBTQ+ discrimination.

The goal of Sarah’s project was to foster a supportive environment in her community where teenagers feel comfortable talking to their parents about these real issues. She presented her project to several classes at her high school and to local Girl Scout troops. Her web series has been added to her school’s health curriculum and can also be viewed on YouTube.

A recent graduate of Garden City High School, Sarah was the president of Tri-M and president of the International Thespian Society.

When she wasn’t participating in her school’s shows, Sarah was a member of the Varsity Swim Team and Varsity Badminton Team. Her fondest Girl Scout tradition was Christmas caroling at a home for individuals with

Maryann Savino special needs. Sarah will be attending Elon University in the fall to study acting with a minor in dance.

Jacqueline built a monarch butterfly habitat for her Gold Award project “Monarch-Milkweed Movement.”

Her project aimed to restore natural lands with milkweed to help preserve the monarch butterfly species, and to educate community members to be more conscious of the ecosystem.

Working with the Centennial Gardens Committee, she constructed a habitat using milkweed and other butterfly-friendly plants. She also created a brochure that details the necessity of monarch butterflies that can be located near the entrance to the gardens.

Her project will be sustained through upkeep by the Centennial Gardens volunteer program.

A recent graduate of Floral Park Memorial High School, Jacqueline played soccer, ran track, and was the vice president of her class. She was also a member of the Model United Nations team. Her fondest memory of Girl Scouts is camping at the cathedral in Garden City. It was cold, but her troop made s’mores around the fire and sang songs together. She will be attending the University of California-Berkeley, majoring in data science in the fall.

For Maryann’s Gold Award project, “Special Needs Fire Safety,” she worked to adapt fire safety for individuals with special needs. She created a website and blog where she posted an adapted fire safety curriculum and designed a special needs finder sticker that she sent out to over 250 special needs families, fire departments, and organizations across the country. In addition, she used social media and Facebook parent groups to share her project presentation and resources all across America, and globally to Canada, Europe, and Australia.

As a recent graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, Maryann was a student ambassador and a member of the Spanish,

Lindsey Stevenson Social Studies, and National Honor Societies. She was also a member of her school’s leadership program. Her fondest Girl Scout memory is going to Lake George for white water rafting and rope climbing. Maryann will be attending St. John’s University in the fall to major in childhood education.

Lindsey helped facilitate communication for nonverbal children with special needs in her Gold Award project “AAC Core Board.” An AAC core board enables children with special needs to communicate what they want to do by pointing to a picture on the board. Lindsey educated her community on the importance of AAC core boards, the need for them in public spaces, and how they can be used. She also recorded a video of this information that is posted on her website. Lindsey designed and installed her board at Homestead Primary School in Garden City so non-verbal students can communicate during recess.

A recent graduate of Garden City High School, Lindsey was a member of the volleyball and golf teams.

She also participated in the Pairs Program, where she sat with the special needs students during lunch on Fridays and played board games. Her fondest Girl Scout memory is when she slept at the Museum of Natural History under the whale. Lindsey will attend Molloy College for Nursing in the fall.

According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, girls who have earned their Gold Award display more positive life outcomes about their sense of self and have greater satisfaction, life success, community service, leadership, and civic engagement. In addition, recipients of the Gold Award who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive an advanced rank for their achievements and can receive scholarships or other types of recognition from most colleges and universities.

It’s easy to fall in love. The tough part is staying in love. This little book, created in love because of love, shows you how – so says Beverly Beckham, a columnist for the Boston Globe, in her article about Tom Murphy’s new novel – “The Anniversary Box.” Monday, a group of readers gathered at Prost to “launch” the book that offers a “roadmap” to keep love alive and fresh.

The 24 “messages” in the book come from lessons in resiliency Tom, who grew up in Garden City, learned from his late wife, Barb, who battled lung cancer for six years. Tom and Barb were married in St. Joseph’s Church in 1980 and were married for thirty-three years.

Here’s the storyline: Set in Garden City, “The Anniversary Box” tells the story of a young woman, Peggy Moore, who, as she is about to get married, discovers her parents created an “anniversary box.” Each year, on their anniversary, they would write a message to express their love and suggest ways to make it stronger, then store the messages away in their anniversary box. Peggy is six

weeks away from her wedding when she develops cold feet suddenly and needs her parents’ guidance the most. But her mom is deceased and her dad has suffered a debilitating stroke, so she sets out to find their missing anniversary box to learn the secret to make love last a lifetime before stepping to the altar herself.

Melanie Adkins, one of Amazon’s top reviewers, wrote a review calling the novel “a love story for the ages.”

I was hoping to write fewer and fewer pieces about the Covid-19 virus. Unfortunately, the Delta variant has raised everyone’s consciousness, even if the long term situation is generally going is a positive direction. We need to be wary of the variant, but we also don’t need to overreact.

The variant, which is clearly more contagious than the original strain (it may or may not be more dangerous) has now clearly become the dominant variety of the virus in the United States. According to The New York Times count, there were 85,866 new cases of the virus reported on August 2, an increase over 2 weeks of 142 percent, and the outbreak has particularly hit a few states like Florida and Louisiana.

In a few pockets of the country, the hospital system has been stretched.

Newly reported hospitalizations are up 86 percent in the last two weeks, with a 27 percent increase in deaths.

A related concern with the variant has been so-called breakthrough infections, in which fully vaccinated people nevertheless contract the virus. It is hard to get a good handle on the number of this type of infections, since the CDC does not track these cases unless they result in hospitalization or death, which seems odd. In general, it seems that the viruses are holding up well against the variant in preventing death and serious illness, but the number of breakthrough cases reported anecdotally in the media makes you think that they may be fairly common.

Just in the last week or two, vaccinated members of the New York Yankees, as well as Texas legislators fleeing to Washington, as well as Senator Lindsey Graham, have all contracted the virus.

The increases in infections from the Delta variant and the breakthrough infections are sobering, but they absolutely need to be put in perspective.

First, the United States has now achieved President Biden’s goal of having at least 70 percent of eligible adults vaccinated. That means

that about 191.8 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with 164.9 million fully vaccinated people. While the rate of vaccination has slowed considerably since the peak in April, 673,000 doses are still being given out every day. As noted earlier, the vaccines are quite effective at preventing serious infection from the Delta variant. The rate of vaccination has been particularly high among older Americans, who are the most vulnerable population.

Second, while the level of cases, hospitalization and deaths have increased in the wake of the Delta variant, they are still far lower than the peaks of January and February.

Deaths in particular are 90 percent lower.

Third, and something that has not been emphasized in the media, is that the intensity of the Delta variant seems likely to decline in the near future. Covid cases in Britain, which had huge Delta-related increases a month ago, have began to recede sharply since around July 20, even though England has now largely reopened. There have also been recent sharp drops in caseloads in India and the Netherlands. Dr. Scott Gottlieb estimates that the United States is perhaps two or three weeks behind Britain and that cases will begin to plateau and drop here as well, although there may be regional surges. Dr. Gottlieb also points out that the natural immunity produced by the increased spread of the Delta strain, plus immunizations, will eventually get the case level down.

So where do we go from here? As CDC head Rochelle Wallinsky has pointed out, this now is primarily a pandemic of the unvaccinated. While it is possible that infected vaccinated people can spread the disease, the chances of a vaccinated person getting a serious infection is still very low. So, the best advice seems to be to get vaccinated, use common sense, wear a mask if it makes you feel better or in dangerous situations, but understand that things aren’t quite as dreadful as sometimes portrayed.

Many know of the beautiful chapel inside the St. Paul’s School building.

However, many did not know St. Mary’s had one too! I took the above photograph of the St. Mary’s Chapel in 1989. It was smaller than the St. Paul’s Chapel, however it did have a Tiffany stained glass window as did St. Paul’s. When the St. Mary’s building was demolished in 2001, the Cathedral removed the Tiffany window and sold it at auction for what I can recall was “a pretty penny” as they say. I wonder what the Village will do with the St. Paul’s Tiffany window?

Assault arrest Upon an investigation at the Country Life Press RR Station, on July 27th Garden City Detectives arrested a 29-yearold male for four counts of criminal mischief and two counts of assault.

Drug arrest As a result of an investigation on Stewart Avenue, on July 28th Garden City Police arrested a 56-year-old female for alleged possession of a controlled substance(cocaine).

DWI at GCHS On July 29th, upon investigation of a vehicle driving on the grounds of the Garden City High School, resulting in damage to the track area and a fence, Officers arrested the driver, a 24-year-old male, for DWI. Criminal contempt Upon investigation of a dispute between a male and female on Willow Street on July 29th, Garden City Police arrested a 22 year-old man for allegedly violating a stay away court order. He was charged with criminal contempt.

Beer thief Officers investigated a report of a male subject entering CVS and stealing twelve cases of beer on July 29th.

Tree limb down On July 29th Garden City Police responded to a report of a fallen tree limb on Raymond Court.

Excessive speed An unlicensed motorist was charged with excessive speed on Rockaway Avenue on July 29th.

Multiple suspensions Upon investigation of a vehicle passing a red traffic light on Washington Avenue at St. James Street South on July 30th, Garden City Police arrested the driver, a 45-year-old male, for driving with twelve suspensions, including one for a prior DWI, as well as passing a red light and improper plates.

Unauthorized account Officers investigated a July 30th report of a person’s identity being stolen and used to open an unauthorized cell phone account.

Teenage “joy riders” While on patrol on Hilton Avenue, on July 30th, a Garden City Police

officer observed a vehicle recently reported stolen from the Nassau County 1st Precinct. The vehicle was stopped and upon investigation, a 15-year-old juvenile occupant was arrested and charged with the theft of the auto as well as unauthorized use of an auto. Two other occupants in the vehicle, a 16-yearold juvenile and an 18-year-old female, were also arrested and charged with unauthorized use of an auto.

Narcotics arrest Upon an investigation on Stewart Avenue by GCPD and NCPD on July 30th, a 32-year-old male was arrested for possession of various narcotics.

He was charged with four counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Scam call On July 30th a resident received a scam phone call from a person who stated her nephew was arrested in Maine. The resident determined it was a scam after verifying her nephew was safe at home and not arrested.

Harassment arrest Upon investigation, Officers arrested a 52-year-old male for allegedly grabbing and kicking an acquaintance in Parking Field 7N. He was arrested for harassment.

Fraudulent checks On July 31st Garden City Detectives investigated the cashing of three fraudulent checks, totaling more than $500,000, against a Garden City Plaza Company’s bank account.

Lawn chair taken As per video surveillance, a male subject entered the rear yard of a Meadow Street residence and removed a lawn chair on August 1st.

Dine and dash Officers investigated a report on August 1stof two female subjects leaving a Franklin Avenue restaurant without paying for food and drinks they had ordered and consumed.

Loud music A Ring Road restaurant was issued an appearance ticket for loud music emanating from the premises See page 36

National Night Out

The Garden City Police Department participated in the 36th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the Garden City Pool. During this program, Detectives Roumeliotis and Hennessy greeted residents and discussed issues that affect the safety and welfare of this community.

National Night Out involves over 16,000 communities from all 50 states.

The annual event is a community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Citizen involvement is vital in our fight to build a safer community.

Residents are urged to: • Report crime or suspicious activity as soon as it happens, • Take necessary steps to prevent crime,

• Join and/or support local community organizations that address crime and quality of life issues, • Discuss with your family what to do in case of emergencies, • Help make children aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and • Advise them what to do when approached by strangers.

Water Tower: H2M performed visual inspections of the interior wet floor. Crews continue with the interior stripe coat at the bell and exterior tank finish coatings. H2M holiday testing will follow once the contractor finishes the interior dry stripe coat. Holiday testing is a “non-destructive test method applied on protective coatings to detect unacceptable discontinuities such as pinholes and voids.”

“rusty” water. H2M and the Village have also received “blue” water complaints from two buildings. H2M has made suggestions to the Village to mitigate such issues.

Water meets all regulatory standards.

Well 7 (Waterworks site): Well No. 7 is in operation. The contractor is working on ordering parts for punch list items. Permanent construction to be incorporated with permanent construction of Well Nos. 8 and 12.

Wells 8 and 12 (Rockaway Avenue site): Crews continue flowing water to the site. Pressure testing will take place next week. Trojan will continue programing in the AOP buildings next week. Performance testing for Well No. 12 is expected within the next few weeks.

Well No 9 (Wilson Street site): The Engineering Report was submitted the week of May 3, 2021. H2M will provide the Village with a proposal for design of an AOP treatment system.

Wells 10 and 11 (Clinton Road site): Once electrical work in the treatment building and for the new switch gear is complete, Well No. 10 can operate to system.

Wells 13 and 14 (Garden City Country Club site): Received approval from the New York State Department of Health to operate wells with treatment to system. Wells 13 and 14 are able to run to system through treatment. Well 13 is currently running to system without treatment. The Village will introduce Well 14 through the treatment system. Once Well 14 is stable, Well 13 will be sent through treatment to system.

Wells 15 and 16 Hilton Park site): Crews completed brick work and installed the FRP grating on the GAC trench drain and swept and cleaned the interior first floor. Crews will also install interior piping and continue roof work.

Speed Indicator Signs

There have been some delays in the delivery of speed indicator signs for certain areas in the Village, according to Commissioner Kenneth Jackson. The Police Department is still expecting delivery of the New Hyde Park signs this month. The signs for Stewart Avenue, in the vicinity of the Garden City Country Club, and Rockaway Avenue, in the vicinity of the Cherry Valley Club, are delayed.

Commissioner Jackson is hoping for

delivery by September. The signs, which indicate the posted speed limit and your speed as you approach them, are already located on Clinton Road and Rockaway Avenue, near Garden City High School. These additional signs will serve as another tool to help mitigate speeding in the Village.

Commissioner Jackson and I want all of our residents to drive safely and at the posted Village speed limits. We are stepping up traffic safety enforcement on all Village roads and anticipate the final recommendations from the Cathedral Avenue Traffic Study to be issued shortly.

Blood Drive at the Library

Long Island Blood Services will hold a blood drive at the Garden City Public Library on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 1:00 to 7:00 PM in the Large Meeting Room on the Lower Level of the Library. Area hospitals are in need of local residents’ help.

Each donation can help to save up to three lives. Appointments are strongly preferred; walk-ins are welcomed only if capacity permits. To schedule an appointment, scan the QR code located on the Garden City Library’s homepage, www.gardencitypl.org, and type in Garden City. You can also call 1-800-688-0900 to schedule an appointment or for any medical questions concerning blood donations. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and CDC guidelines, Long Island Blood Services requires masks to be worn during the entire session.

LIRR Third Track Update

During the month of August, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Garden City: 3rd Track Installation • Crews will continue the installation of third track between Nassau Blvd. and Herricks Rd. in August • Ballast will be installed along the south side of the right-of-way during the day to support the future installation of the third track - Work will occur between New Hyde Park Road and Tanners Pond Road, as well as between Tanners Pond Road and the Merillon Avenue Station - Residents and businesses may hear noise and/or feel vibrations during this activity - Click here for more information on this activity • Once the ballast has been installed, crews will prepare to build third track Wall Construction • On the north side of the tracks, from Nassau Boulevard heading east along Atlantic Avenue, crews will See page 36

It’s What’s Happening For Young Adults Through the Library

Tree Ornaments for Community Service: Apple Ornaments

Earn community service by painting ornaments for the Garden City Public Library’s Tweens and Teens Department’s Tree Ornament! Each volunteer will receive 3 ornaments and a set of paint pens to decorate their ornaments at home. Paint pens must be returned to the library. These ornaments will be used to decorate our new ornament tree each month!

For the month of August, the ornaments will be apple-shaped. Registration begins Tuesday, August 17 at 10 a.m. online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Space is limited, so check Eventkeeper for availability. Completed ornaments must be returned by August 26 to the Library.

Registrants will be asked to pick up their ornaments at the library in order to participate in this community service program. Volunteers must return 3 decorated ornaments and their set of paint pens in order to receive community service. Volunteers will receive 2 hours for every 3 ornaments they submit, at the discretion of the Tweens and Teens Department. This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

“Just one more! Please!” Friends of the GC Library Book Donations Day

The Friends of the Garden City Library is pleased to schedule a new Book Donations Day. Donations must be brought to the downstairs café in the library on Saturday, August 7 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Only two bags or cartons of books will be accepted per family. At the front door, you will be met by a volunteer who will instruct you to proceed downstairs by the lobby elevator. There the books will be received by a member of the Friends of the Library.

We ask that only new or gently used books be donated. We are not able to accept textbooks, encyclopedias, or magazines. Please refrain from bringing books that are ripped, have been written in, have traces of mold on them

An array of children's books is available for sale at the Library.

Every mom and dad knows just how sacred the “going to bed storytime” is to a child. It’s when cuddles are shared, family traditions are passed on, lessons are taught and memories are made. And very often, it is when those hard to answer queries like ”But Why Can’t I?” are tackled.

The Friends of the Garden City Public Library is ready to help you out with this nightly ritual. Just take a peek at the showcase at the front of the library to whet your

appetite. On view is an assortment of wonderful bedtime storybooks at truly amazing prices.

Then proceed to the rear of the library where hundreds of specially chosen, kid friendly books, are on display for the month of August—for purchase at one dollar or less.

And the dollar you spend will then be magically converted into funding one of the Children’s or Young Adult Programs that will further enrich the life of your child. It is a WIN-WIN, if there ever was one!

Troop 55 hikes in New Mexico mountains A crew from Troop 55 Garden City completed a seven-day hike through the outback mountains of Cimarron, NM at Philmont Scout Camp. The trip was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 but was rescheduled and went off without a hitch. Six scouts and three fathers loaded up their gear and food excited to begin after two years of planning.

A ranger from Philmont started the trek with us and left the crew after two nights to complete the trip using everything learned.

The boys adjusted to situations that arose, completed each days hike even when tired and collected memories and stories for a lifetime.

Family deli has long history in community

BY GARY SIMEONE The Adelphi Deli, located at 351 Nassau Blvd, has been in business for over thirty years in the community. It is a family run establishment with three brothers in charge after having taken the reins from their father.

“Me and my two brothers took over for my father, Joe McCarthy, who is a legend in the deli business,” said Tom McCarthy, co-owner of Adelphi Deli.

“We have been working here since 1984, and it’s been a tremendous run thus far.”

McCarthy said he started working at the establishment when he was four-

teen years old, helping clean the kitchen and wash the dishes.

“Anything you can think of I’ve done it here, along with my two brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who’ve spent a good portion of their lives in the deli business.”

McCarthy attended Herricks High School and graduated college at NYC College of Technology with a degree in hotel/restaurant management.

He worked at the Marriott Hotel near JFK Airport in Queens for a few years before committing full time to the family business.

McCarthy said that when the COVID19 pandemic hit in 2020, his business

took a serious hit, along with many other business establishments.

“It was a brutal time for us those first few months with almost no customers coming in the store. We were able to keep the lights on with donations from the Deli, residents of Garden City community, the Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead and from NYU Winthrop Hospital.”

He and his two brothers have been helping to bring back the business by alternating their schedules and working six to seven days per week.

“We’ve definitely been working harder because it’s been tough to find people to work behind the counter or even to

find people who want to apply for the position. Despite all of that, our business has really been picking up the last few months.”

He said that a lot of graduation and communion parties and local sports events, like the lacrosse tournaments at St. Paul’s, have help to bolster sales.

McCarthy said that his father, Joe, was one of the original and most wellknown deli people on Long Island.

“My dad is truly a legend in the deli business. He started working in this business all the way back in 1965 before purchasing and owning the Adelphi Deli in 1984.”

Getting a rocket ready to launch

More than 2,000 Garden City students sharpened their learning skills and explored specific interests throughout July, thanks to a summer enrichment program housed at Stratford Elementary School and run through SCOPE Educational Services.

The Garden City Public Schools, which has the largest SCOPE program on Long Island, offered an assortment of engaging, action-packed classes for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

Among the featured single and multiple-week courses were Rocketry and Retro Science; Bound for Broadway; Music, Movement and More; Cool Caribbean Cooking; Digital Film Making; Editing and Photography; Coding and Digital Programming and Creative Writing and Journalism. A variety of other classes focused on sports, STEAM and arts and crafts, and a new grant-funded program provided support in reading and math.

Students created various arts and crafts projects during the summer enrichment program.

They also completed in an Olympics Day that featured a math component. Secondary level participants enjoyed a painting class modeled after popular Paint Night events but held in the morning. They also created projects using advanced technology and had opportunities to take numerous college application prep classes.

The middle and high school program was new this year, and overall enrollment across all grades increased significantly from past summers.

“It’s a very well supported program from the community,” Enrichment Director Dan Seid said. “Every room in Stratford is used and classes run the gamut, the students are having a great summer and enjoying the classes they are learning so much from.”

Owners of Adelphi Cleaners have a long backstory

BY GARY SIMEONE The business partnership between Eddie and Howie Hoffman (no relation), who own Adelphi Cleaners, has a long backstory. The pair began working at a laundry service called Happy Cleaners in Brooklyn, before closing up shop and moving to Garden City fifteen years ago.

“This is going back several years, but I was working at a deli in Brooklyn at the time down the street from Howie’s business, which was called Happy Cleaners.

I ended up going to work with him when I was seventeen while pursuing a college degree in industrial electronics & computer technology,” said Eddie.

He said the neighborhood where they worked went downhill and Howie made the decision to sell the business and give Eddie part ownership in it.

“I was looking to take a job with Canon after he sold the business, but Howie said that he wanted me to stay on with him. He offered me twenty percent of the business so that we could buy

another laundry and cleaning service in a different location.”

That was how the two Hoffmans came together to buy another former laundry business at 328 Nassau Blvd and purchase an additional location on Seventh Street.

Adelphi Cleaners does everything from laundry services to drapery, leathers, rugs, fur coats, comforters and specialize in handbag cleaning and handbag restoration.

Eddie said that the business goes above and beyond just the laundry and dry cleaning services.

“We’ve actually performed some charity work in the community. Just this past Christmas, we collected over 500 coats and we dry cleaned them for free. The coats were collected by the (Mary Brennan) INN and given out to homeless people and people living in shelters.”

He said that it was the third time the business cleaned coats for free to give to members of the community.

Michael Healy Lloyd

Michael Healy Lloyd

Michael Healy Lloyd, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2021 in Naples, FL. He was born July 1, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to Robert and Kathleen Lloyd.

After graduating from Brooklyn Tech in 1959 he received an appointment to the Air Force Academy where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in Engineering Sciences. Following graduation, he completed flight school at Vance AFB in Oklahoma in 1964 and was certified to fly T-37s and T-38s. He continued as a flight instructor at Laredo AFB and Sheppard AFB. Following his discharge from the Air Force in 1970, he worked briefly as an engineer at Kodak in Massachusetts until

he elected to continue his studies at Harvard Business School.

He graduated with an MBA in 1972, beginning what was to be a 30 year career on Wall Street as a Research Analyst. As a Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”), his professional experience included successful stints at Salomon Brothers, HC Wainright & Co, Woolcott Research Associates, Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank and NatWest Securities.

During his career, he received several accolades in Institutional Investors’ AllStar survey as well as the Wall Street Journal’s Analyst Rankings.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Dorothy Sande Lloyd; daughter Catherine M. Lloyd; son Robert F. Lloyd and wife, Jennifer; son Michael C. Lloyd; son Gregory J. Lloyd and wife Justyna; daughter Alexandra and husband Scott Gehnrich; loving brothers Thomas Kent Lloyd and Father Robert Lloyd MM; beloved sister Ellen Marie Gallagher (deceased 1999); and 9 grandchildren Matthew, Alex, Katy, Henry, Olivia, Amelia, Charlie, Owen and Maya.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at both the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and in Naples, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either the Air Force Academy Foundation (USAFA.org to “give now”) or St. Jude Children’s Hospital (stjude.org/ donate) in his honor. Gift card scam Officers investigated a report of an employee of a Garden City business receiving an email that appeared to be from his supervisor directing him to purchase Google money cards, scratch off the numbers, and forward them to the same email address. It was later determined this was a scam. Total loss is $1,600.

Mystery on the Historic Maine Windjammer Victory Chimes

And who among us is the interloper, unconnected to anyone else? Is it coincidence or providence that brings us together?

The mystery provides marvelous intrigue during the course of the six-day cruise sailing from Rockland, Maine, among the islands of Penobscot Bay. A windjammer cruise is as much about experiencing the thrill of the Great Age of Sail, when these mighty schooners – an American innovation - sailed with the wind and waves to bring the timber, building stones and raw materials that built the nation – literally engines of the economy - as it is about reconnecting with the joys of simple pleasures as basic as conversation and song.

Song and storytelling, indeed, are the theme of this sailing (many windjammer cruises have a theme or focus), which features music on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings by singer/songwriters Mike and Amy Aiken, who are joined for the Friday evening musicale by Cara Lauzon on her fiddle. The Aikens have sailed up to Rockland on the boat they have lived on for the past 21 years from their homeport on the Chesapeake (a clue to solving the mystery).

Here in Maine are the largest concentration of these historic sailing ships in North America, nine of which are members of the Maine Windjammer Association, sailing out of Rockland and Camden.

Each has its own story, its own character. And each sailing is different, even on the same ship - the product of the serendipity and alchemy of people (passengers as well as captain and crew), weather (which often pro-

vides the drama, whether because of fog or squall), and where we wind up anchoring. There is no itinerary. The captain sets course, depending upon wind, weather and whimsy.

Each afternoon, after we set anchor in some cove or harbor, Captain Sam Sikkema, the newest owner/caretaker of the Victory Chimes’ 121-year legacy, gathers us around with a map, reviews that day’s route and tells us the back stories of the people and places we have sailed. In the afternoon or the morning before we set out again, we tender to shore to explore.

left in North America out of 4,000 built in this Great Age of Sail - was designed to be sailed by just three, which seems amazing considering how 10 of us line up to help haul in the line to raise the sail.

There is a motor to raise the anchor but no propulsion engine, so now - as then - there is a yawl boat, Enoch, that pushes the ship when the wind is not sufficient. That innovation, indeed, is what made the Victory Chimes such a cash-cow for its original owner, Robert Riggen, who made back the $12,000 he paid to build her in 1900, in the first year, naming her the Edwin & Maude for his kids.

The schooner rigging - as opposed to the square rigging of ocean-going ships - was a major American innovation that allowed the vessels to be nimble and fast, and operated with a minimal number of crew for maximum profit for the owner.

Cruising each day, we get to help raise the sails, but it is really a marvel to watch the intricate ballet of the crew (made up of men and women) performing physically demanding tasks - even daring-do – such as climbing the tall masts to repair rigging, or snapping to with agility, strength and precision, to reposition sails and rigging to sail us out of the way of a storm.

Captain Sam or Chief Mate Tripp shout commands or signal with hand gestures and the crew calls back, “Ready throat, ready peak. Mainsail halyards hoist away. Ease the lee lift. Throat make fast. Peak make fast. Heave [to which we respond Ho].

Heave. [Ho]. Ease up, drop the line.”

Captain Sam shouts out with urgency: “Hard left.

James start the boat. Ahead 2000. Take in the mizzen. Take in the outer jib, then take in everything else. Bring James his foulies!”

He navigates far south, tacking to avoid the storm. “The crew mustered the hell out of that squall,” he says later with a combination of pride and relief.

Where there are passenger cabins today would have been open space to haul cargo – lumber, mainly, but also salt, pumpkins, fish scrap for fertilizer or anything to pay the freight. And the two showers (and three heads) would have been an unheard of luxury, even 50 years ago.

The Edwin & Maude worked carrying cargo through World War I, the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression and World War II. But then, mechanization of the war effort gave rise to bigger ships that made the old wood ships uneconomical.

Hundreds were burned or just left to decay.

By 1946, the Edwin & Maude ended her career transporting cargo but instead of being scrapped, was converted for a new concept of “dude cruiser”

by Herman Knust of Chesapeake Bay Vacation Cruises.

In 1954, Capt. Frederick “Boyd” Guild brought the ship to the Maine coast and renamed her Victory Chimes after a

Canadian coastal schooner he admired as a boy that had been launched on Armistice Day. She survived a succession of owners: A Minnesota bank president wanted to sail it on Lake Superior but couldn’t get certified (his own bank foreclosed).

It was purchased at auction in 1987 by Domino’s Pizza and renamed Domino Effect. When Domino’s sold off its fleet, Victory Chimes was slated to be sent to Japan to be converted into a restaurant.

Captain Kip Files and Captain Paul DeGaeta, who oversaw the Domino’s restoration, purchased the vessel to keep her from leaving the country. They immediately changed the name back to Victory Chimes and returned her to the Maine windjammer trade. Maine’s Legislature welcomed her back with a special resolution.

In 1997, Victory Chimes was named an American National Historic Landmark under the Maritime Heritage Program of the National Parks Service, becoming one of only 127 vessels with that designation.

Now Captain Sam Sikkema and partner Cara Lauzon have the weighty responsibility of being Victory Chimes’ owner/caretakers. They acquired Victory Chimes in 2018 and had a great season in 2019 before being locked down

by COVID-19 in 2020 – for perhaps the first year in its long history. PPP funding helped them stay afloat.

Captain Sam has sailed around the world, on every ocean, in schooners, square riggers, training ships, yachts, fishing vessels and commercial vessels.

He served as Chief Mate to Captain Kip

on the 1841 whaling ship, the Charles W Morgan, at the Maritime Museum in Mystic, Connecticut. And he has a cat, Fiji, who delights us with her antics.

While every windjammer cruise is different, there are certain constants – the feeling of being transported back into this Golden Age of Sail and the traditional lobster dinner. Some of the captains do it on a secluded beach; others, like Victory Chimes, serve on board (as elegant as eating lobster can be) but each one is an unmatched culinary experience of the freshest, most succulent and sweetest lobster in unimaginable abundance that spoils you for lobster forever.

The hours spent sailing are relaxing - like a floating beach holiday - reading, playing games like backgammon, scrabble. A group is doing macrame (usually there are knitters); we photographers are constantly looking out for picturesque scenes to capture. But a main activity is just chatting, which is key to solving the mystery of what brought all of us together on this particular cruise.

By the time we depart, Diane has charted the relationships, solving the mystery: Just about everybody - through college roommates, music, book club, Philly folk festival, sailing, childhood friendships and family - is somehow linked with the Aikens. Grilling Safely

BY CHARLYN FARGO Many of us keep our grill handy all year long, but we typically use it more in the summer months. As the temperatures rise, grilling your food is a great way to keep the kitchen cool.

Our family grills meat, seafood, poultry, vegetables and even fruit -- the grill brings out the flavors in a way that other cooking methods don’t. When you think about grilling, it’s important to think also about food safety.

A recent study by the Food and Drug Aministration found that there is an increase in the number of foodborne illnesses during the warm summer months. Each year, there are about 48 million cases of foodborne illness -- the equivalent of sickening 1 in 6 Americans each year. And these illnesses result in an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths yearly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here are a few food safety tips for grilling safely.

No. 1. Thaw safely. Keep meat, poultry, and seafood cool until you are ready to use it. Leaving food on countertops provides bacteria the opportunity to multiply and reach dangerous levels. And it is even more important to keep these items cool in warmer weather. If the temperature is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the time needed for harmful bacteria to reach unsafe levels can be as little as one hour. It’s best to thaw items in the refrigerator on the lowest shelf to reduce the risk of contaminating other foods.

No. 2. Use a marinade only once. A marinade is a savory, usually acidic sauce in which meat, poultry, seafood or a vegetable are soaked to either enrich flavor or tenderize. When marinating, always keep foods refrigerated. When it’s time to grill, discard the marinade or bring it to a full boil to destroy any harmful bacteria.

No. 3 Cook to the right temperature.

To do that, you need to use a thermometer rather than relying on color. Cook beef, pork, veal, lamb roasts, steaks and chops to a minimum internal temperature of least 145 F. Cook ground beef, veal, lamb and pork to a minimum internal temperature of at least 160 F. And cook poultry to a minimum safe internal temperature of 165 F.

A: Liquid aminos are culinary seasonings that have a look and flavor similar to soy sauce and are made by treating soybeans with an acid solution to break them down into free amino acids, or by fermenting coconut sap with salt and water. They have a salty and savory flavor. Compared to soy sauce, aminos have less sodium and are gluten free.

They are also a source of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Try them as a replacement for soy sauce.

Notes From Saratoga Race Track opening weekend

BY ED ROTONDO After a year of not having horse racing fans in attendance, NYRA was happy to be able to open for the 153rd meeting at Saratoga Race Track with no restrictions. Saratoga Springs has become one of the key summer destinations in New York state, predominantly during racing season. It has also become an excellent vacation spot year-round because of a now sprawling downtown area that will remind you of Garden City’s Seventh Street. But if you’re up there during race season be sure to make reservations or you could be out of luck or eating very late!

If you are an early riser, I would suggest getting to the track for the early morning workouts, as well as jumping on a tram to the barn area for a quick glimpse of the work that goes into racing. It’s especially a unique experience if you get out to the track while the morning fog is still settling over the race track. A scene right out of a movie!

In the morning, you will get to see the exercise riders working the horses both on the main track as well as the much smaller training track adjacent to the barns. See ‘hot walkers’ taking horses for a walk around their barn area after they’ve been put through their workouts. Maybe catch a glimpse of a horse being washed down by a groom or stable hands and getting a picture of the steam rising off their bodies.

But the highlight for most visitors is getting an up-close look at these amazing and powerful racehorses. Maybe even a sighting of that horse you will be rooting on later in the day!

Tickets for reserved sections are mostly sold out for the season but there is a big re-seller’s market for many of the best seats in the house. My favorite thing about Saratoga is the picnic

area, a little more fan friendly than Belmont Park. And whether you are bold enough to make the mad dash as the gates open to reserve a table or can get a reserved table in the Miller Lite Picnic Paddock section, having a home base in the picnic area definitely puts you in the middle of the action. What could be better than bringing in your cooler, enjoying the weather under the trees and watching some great races.

For a different view, sitting in the newly created Cutwater Stretch gives you a picture-perfect view of the horses as they come around the last turn and into the stretch. These are great seats if you want to see the riders jockey for position and make that big move as they come down the final stretch. They are not so good though if you’re hoping to see who wins in a photo finish, for that you’ll be watching the tv screens!

And of course, if you’re looking for a seat to call home base during the day with some cover from the possible late afternoon showers, getting a reserved grandstand seat or a general admission seat is always an option. You’ll still have access to all the best food stands, be able to get up to the rail or walk over to the paddock.

After the races while in town you won’t go hungry or thirsty. Just keep in mind that like the races, a lot of restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so be sure to check ahead of time while you’re making those reservations. If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant that hits on all cylinders, I would highly recommend Solevo Kitchen, you have to try the eggplant chips – they are amazing! But as with most of the highly rated eateries, reservations are a must and almost impossible to get unless booked days in advance.

Looking for a casual dinner with great bar food there are plenty of options with two of my favorites being Druthers Brewing Co. on Broadway or Whitman Brewing Company, a few blocks off Broadway with their take on Detroit style pizza. Both offer a wide selection of home brews, so maybe doing a flight is the best idea. For a unique menu give Boca Bistro a try with their interesting tapas menu, and a paella for 2 to 3 people that is delicious. Their mocktails and sangria were a hit with our family.

Weekend brunch is very popular and a tough seat to get, but I would suggest The Merc or Max London’s.

path, make it a point to get to Eddie F’s New England Seafood for a lobster BLT or lobster grilled cheese, you won’t be disappointed.

Or you could just wait to get to the track and enjoy the many options that are offered there.

I’ll Tell You What’s Right With Social Security!

I get a lot of emails from readers that start with some version of the phrase: “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security!” And then they go off on a little bit of a rant, almost always citing some misinterpretation of Social Security laws.

In the past, I’ve written a similar column with all the rants coming from men who were usually griping about some misunderstood issues involving the politics of Social Security. However, today’s questions all come from women with some misplaced gripes about Social Security benefits for spouses. In each case, I will set the record straight and explain what is right with Social Security.

Q: I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security! I am 61 years old. My husband is only 51. I have worked most of my life and paid Social Security taxes for many years. And now I’ve learned that I will not be able to collect a dime of my Social Security until my husband is getting his own Social Security. This is totally unfair!

A: Yes, it would be totally unfair if it was true. But it’s not true. You can get your own Social Security retirement benefit beginning as early as age 62, whether your husband is 51 or 151 ... or 21, for that matter. His age and his Social Security eligibility have nothing to do with your potential entitlement to benefits.

It is true that you wouldn’t be able to collect any dependent wife’s benefits on his record until he is old enough for Social Security and getting his own monthly checks.

But you are talking about your own retirement benefits. And nothing about him and his Social Security has anything to do with you and your own Social Security.

Q: I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security! I was a teacher in Texas, and Iget a pension from our teachers’ retirement system. It’s about $3,500 per month. But my husband worked all his life and paid into Social Security. If he dies, I won’t be allowed to get a nickel in Social Security widow’s benefits because of some stupid offset law. This makes no sense!

A: Actually, what you call a “stupid offset law” is a very well thought out provision of Social Security law that makes perfect sense. It’s called the “government pension offset.” In a nutshell, it says that an amount equal to two-thirds of your teacher’s pension must be deducted from any spousal benefits you are due from Social Security.

Why does the law make sense? Consider this: Assume you had worked all your life at a job covered by Social Security and you were now getting $3,500 in a Social Security retirement benefit instead of a teacher’s retirement benefit.

You would never be eligible for anything on your husband’s record after he dies

because your own Social Security benefit would offset any widow’s benefits you might be due. The government pension offset law merely makes sure your teacher’s retirement pension is treated the same way as a Social Security retirement pension has always been treated.

Q: I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security! I just heard something about the program that is making my blood boil! I am 63 years old, and I never worked outside the home.

My husband is 62, and he is still working. He doesn’t plan to retire and apply for Social Security until he is 70 years old. And I was told I have to wait until he signs up for Social Security before I can get any Social Security myself. If this is true, I’m upset. But here is what really ticks me off. I have a friend who is divorced. She is 62 years old. Like me, she never worked.

Her ex-husband, like my husband, is 62, and he’s still working. He plans to keep working until age 67 before he signs up for Social Security. But my friend says she has already applied for divorced wife’s benefits, and her checks will start soon! How can this possibly be fair?

A: It’s totally fair. And I’ll explain why. It all has to do with the issue of dependency -- the core entitlement issue for any kind of Social Security spousal benefit.

You and your husband are still married. Because you don’t work outside the home, you are financially dependent on your husband. That’s what makes you potentially eligible for a dependent wife’s benefit on his record. But because he is still working, the law assumes he is still supporting you financially. There is no reason to pay you a dependent spouse’s Social Security benefit while your husband is still working. To put it more bluntly: Why should the taxpayers support you when your husband is still supporting you?

Someday he will retire, and Social Security will start paying him a retirement benefit that’s intended to partially replace the income he’s lost because he stopped working. And at that time, Social Security will start paying you a wife’s benefit that’s intended to partially replace that portion of his income he was using to support you.

But your friend’s case is different.

The law cannot assume that her ex-husband is supporting her. So the rules cut divorced women a bit of a break. She is able to get a dependent wife’s benefit on her husband’s record even if he isn’t yet getting Social Security retirement benefits himself. He simply has to be old enough to qualify for benefits. You said your friend’s ex is 62. That makes him old enough for Social Security. And your friend is also 62, meaning she is also old enough to qualify for divorced wife’s benefits.

Q: I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security! It’s these deadbeat women who’ve never worked, so they mooch Social Security benefits off of a husband’s or ex-husband’s record. I’m a single woman who has worked hard all my life, and I will get my own Social Security check.

Get rid of these gold digging wives, and Social Security wouldn’t have any problems!

A: I usually don’t like to touch these rants -- which always come from other women, by the way -- with a 10-foot pole!

I’ll simply make this point: There are a

whole slew of reasons why some women don’t work outside the home. And because of the dependency issues cited in the previous answer, the law has always said these women are entitled to spousal benefits on a husband’s Social Security account.

DIY projects have grown due to the Covid-19 Pandemic

have provided numerous columns on how to prepare and what to do that is crucial in preparing the outside exterior of your home, not only for your personal satisfaction but moreover to keep it looking pristine and top notch when readying and considering putting it on the market for sale. It can be a lot of work or it can be simplified as long as you have a plan and stick to it on a regular basis.

As we all know humans are creatures of procrastination and putting things off will be detrimental possibly to your health but as well to your pocketbook! Most homeowners just don’t want to face the facts that no matter how long you delay chores and projects and being grouped into the “Monday morning quarterback” crowd where most reside; they eventually either “wake up and smell the coffee” and step up to the plate and be responsible and diligent in realizing that they must get things done or suffer the consequences in a lower selling price.

I try to advise all my clients (or assist them with a solid and stressfree short or long term plan to follow) to sit down and create either an excel spread sheet or a simplified outline of what really needs to be accomplished.

This will go a very long way to make whatever repairs and jobs much easier with the least amount of headaches as well as potential arguments with your significant other. The inside of your home is another area of great concern when it comes to enjoying your time in your home as well as what you need to

do to be proactive and just keeping up with having a beautiful living environment. I also understand and totally get it, that for many, the Covid-19 Pandemic has put a kibosh and hold on many improvements and even basic repairs due to loss of income from one’s job and/or business.

However, have you ever thought of being and becoming a DIYer (do it yourselfer) to save a boatload of dineros? Well so many are reverting to this method and enjoying the journey of learning how to do so many jobs and projects on their own, almost like becoming your own general contractor and hiring either some day labors, which is an art in itself or having family and friends chip in with their labor.

One will reap the financial and satisfactory benefits of being more self sufficient and creating greater R.O.I. not only on their own primary residences but also on their investment properties. One of the biggest chores is just de-cluttering that almost anyone can accomplish over the course of a few months or as little as a few weeks, all depending on how much clutter you have and what you will be taking with you and what you will either give away and take a charitable deduction (talk with your CPA to have him/her advice), take with you or just throw in the garbage.

Most of the big box entities have “free” classes for anything from plumbing, heating, electric and I have even seen some provide interior design classes. However, there are so many presentations online where you can receive a superb education on whatever you want to become more proficient at doing and again at the same time, saving quite a lot of money. It’s like eliminating the middle man where you keep the profit you are handing over to a contractor by reducing outside costs by becoming a Do It Yourselfer.

It can seem like a daunting task to learn something new, but the satisfaction of completing tasks and projects

is tantamount to self-satisfaction; but its like going back to school and getting remunerated for the knowledge instead of you taking money out of your pocket.

It may not be for everyone, but if you are really strapped and want to save your hard earned dollars then my professional opinion is to follow the most advantageous path to take; as I teach my new and seasoned agents very similar concepts: to learn, listen, absorb, and most crucial and critical practice and applyc your new knowledge to make things happen while saving a lot of time, effort and money as you earn.

So, as a new or seasoned homeowner being a “DIYer” will put more money back in your pocket when you are ready to sell.

Can we divide them and replant them back into the spot they came from? It is the best location to see them from between some bushes.

A: Yes, you can divide them, and now is a good time to do it. Generally, we divide perennials in the fall or spring when they are dormant, but irises are an exception to the rule. They have large rhizomes that store food and water, allowing them to be moved in the summer heat without too much of a problem.

Some people divide irises every five years or so, while others have never done so at all. They are easy to dig up

because the horizontal stem called the rhizome is at or near the surface, and there are only a few small roots down into the soil. After lifting them from the ground, you can wash them off or just break off any remaining clumps of soil.

Use a sharp knife to separate the rhizomes into pieces with two fans of leaves. Any leftover sections with only one fan of leaves are good for giving away or planting in new locations.

The single fan sections may or may not bloom next year.

You can cut two-thirds of the leaf off before replanting. Mix in some compost to the soil where the iris will be planted.

Plant the rhizome so the top is just at ground level and add a couple of inches of mulch on top.

While you are doing the transplanting, look for iris borers. Iris borers are

the caterpillars of a night flying moth.

The tiny caterpillars eat ragged holes along the edge of the leaf, and then work their way into the center of the leaf.

The weakened leaf will hang over as if it is wilted, when it really has an insect problem. They then burrow down into the rhizome.

The caterpillar eats the inside of the rhizome. Not only is this a bad thing, but the iris can then get bacterial diseases that kill the plant. As the rhizome and root system die, the leaves look wilted again, but this time it is a combination of fewer roots and the diseases.

Watch for the top of a leaf to turn brown and start wilting. Follow that leaf down and see if it has any soft mushy areas down near the base. If a light tug pulls the leaf off, look inside it by holding it up to the light or opening it up. If

the caterpillar is inside, just step on it.

If it is not, check down at the leaf base to see if it has made it into the rhizome.

Pry it out with a wire and step on it. If you cannot find the larvae, you may want to apply a systemic insecticide to the irises.

If the borer rhizome damage is not severe, go ahead and plant it. If there is a lot of soft rotting tissue, cut out that section of rhizome. Small amounts of rot can be scraped off. Then dip the rhizome in a one-part bleach to nine-parts water solution for a few minutes. Rinse it off and allow it to dry before planting it.

The Ringed Planet at its Finest!

BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of August 1-7, 2021 The man who flew a kite in a lightning storm so that we might one day have electricity and penned such poignant words as “in this world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes,” the great 18th century philosopher, statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin, also had a profound interest in astronomy.

Not only was he the widely read author of “Poor Richard’s Almanack,” he also philosophized about the possible existence of life elsewhere in the universe, and he even charted the path of the planet Mercury during one of its rare transits across the face of the sun.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Franklin peered with a telescope at the heavens from time to time from the streets of Philadelphia, which had no light pollution back then, and perhaps he even marveled at the glorious ringed planet Saturn. I wonder if he ever shared that planetary view with any first-time telescope viewers.

This month you, too, can get a great view of Saturn. It appears now at its best, reaching its official opposition point on Aug. 1. That means not only is the ringed planet at its nearest and brightest, but it also rises around sunset so that it remains visible to planet

watchers all night long.

As the sky darkens this week, look for Saturn low in the southeastern sky, and not far to its lower right lies the brighter planet Jupiter; it will reach its opposition point on the Aug. 19.

Saturn will remain in our evening sky throughout the summer, but this month, you can expect a small telescope to present it as a truly spectacular sight.

If you’ve got one, this is definitely the time to aim it toward the ringed world.

Not only is Saturn about as close to the Earth as it can get (around 831 million miles), but its rings are tipped beautifully in our direction.

If you’ve never viewed this planet for yourself, you have no idea what a stunning view you’re missing. Even a small instrument with a magnifying power of only 30x or so will show its rings; of course, a larger telescope with a higher magnification will show not only the rings but also the larger separation between them known as the Cassini Division and even some cloud bands in its atmosphere. Additionally, Saturn’s largest and brightest moon Titan appears with even the smallest of instruments.

What intrigues me most about Saturn is how people react when seeing it for the first time through a telescope. I can always count on an initial gasp of amazement, often followed by a joking

accusation that I slipped in a photographic slide to trick them.

Maybe now you can understand my curiosity about whether Franklin ever shared his view of Saturn with any firsttime telescope viewers. If he had, I’d wager that he would have heard people gasp even more excitedly than they do today. And I suspect that being the wise man that he was, Franklin might have

written his now-famous quotation just a bit differently: “...ºin this world nothing can be said to be certain except death, taxes and the reaction of stargazers to the amazing ringed planet.”

Can You Spend Money on Fun Without Feeling Guilty?

BY CARRIE SCHWAB-POMERANTZ Dear Carrie: I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by all the things I need to save for. From retirement and emergency funds to my son’s college account and home repairs -- on top of trying to pay extra on the mortgage and student loans -- I feel as if I have very little left over for anything else.

I know these bigger things are important, but sometimes I just want to splurge on something fun. How can I spend my money without feeling guilty? -- A Reader Dear Reader: I’m impressed with your question. Most people have the opposite problem. They overspend on the fun and put saving on the back burner. So first give yourself a big round of applause for being so responsible. Then cut yourself some slack. Though preparing for the future is important, especially saving for retirement, so is enjoying the present. And I believe you can do both. It just takes organization and prioritization -- plus the flexibility to make changes if life throws you some curveballs.

Take a Fresh Look at Your Essential Expenses

It sounds as if you have a pretty wellthought-out budget and you’re good at sticking to it. That’s great! However, if you’ve earmarked all of your income toward necessities plus savings, maybe now’s the time to review where your money is going and see if there might be some wiggle room.

First, focus on your necessities, such as your mortgage, utilities, transportation,

insurance, food, clothing and tuition. Don’t forget to factor in any payments toward consumer debt or annual obligations, such as real estate taxes. This exercise should reaffirm that everything is covered.

Review Your Savings Goals

Let’s start with your emergency fund.

The common recommendation is to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in an easily accessible account to

cover yourself and your family should someone be unable to work because of illness or a job loss. How close are you to meeting this goal? Once you have the money set aside, that’s one fewer savings obligation.

You also mention home repairs. This, too, can be a finite goal. Actual maintenance costs vary year to year, so having a certain amount of cash set aside for immediate repairs is a good idea. However, you might also consider a home equity line of credit if you have sufficient equity in your home. This will add to your debt load (and you must always pay the minimum due every month) but can also give you more flexibility as you save for multiple goals.

Now review your projections for both college and retirement savings. (Schwab MoneyWise has good college savings and retirement calculators.) Though it’s always good to be a conscientious saver -- especially for retirement -- it’s possible you’ve set your bar a bit too high. If you haven’t reviewed your progress for a while, now would be a good time to see how you’re doing. Perhaps you’ll be able to cut back just a little on your monthly contributions and still meet your ultimate goals. If not, you’ll need to look for

Don’t Let ‘Good’ Debt Get You Down

Though keeping on top of debt should always be part of financial management, you may be able to take a step back when it comes to paying extra on your mortgage and your student loans. That’s because both fall into what we call “good debt,” meaning they are generally lowcost and have potential tax -- as well as personal -- advantages. So even though it’s always nice to pay down debt, paying off “good debt” is not so important as paying off credit card debt. (Of course, you never want to be late with your minimum payments.)

Bottom line, it’s a tough call. You could consider stopping your overpayments until you get a raise or have disposable income from another source. It’s all a matter of balance.

Make Some Room for Discretionary Spending

Budgeting is about creating buckets for each area of expenditure. For many people, discretionary spending -- the bucket for fun -- is inordinately large. It seems to me that your discretionary bucket may be too small or even nonexistent.

As you look at your overall budget, make sure you now add in the bucket for fun and start filling it. See where you can carve even just a bit of extra money out of your monthly income for such things as entertainment and a family vacation.

You might also put a good portion of any unexpected money -- for instance, a bonus, a refund or a gift -- toward your discretionary spending.

Make this as important a goal as the others. That doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to contribute to it -- life has a way of presenting changing financial challenges -- but don’t always put it last, either. Just keep filling this bucket as regularly as you can.

The main point is that with money earmarked especially for the nice-to-haves -- whatever they may be -- when you do choose to spend it, you can do so freely, without worry that you’re jeopardizing some other aspect of your financial life.

And speaking of fun, just think how much fun you and your family will have watching that money grow and planning what you’ll do with it. Enjoy!

A DRESSED-UP SIDE FULL OF FLAVOR Lighter fare is in season every summer. Salads may dominate menus, while vegetable-rich side dishes can dress up barbecues, brunches or outdoor buffet meals.

Spinach not only packs a nutritional punch, it can add flavor to any dish. According to Judy Joo, a French-trained Korean American chef

and author of “Judy Joo’s Korean Soul Food” (White Lion Publishing), mature spinach has a heartier, meatier texture than its baby variety.

Mature spinach is the star of the show in this recipe for “Seasoned Spinach,” a nutritious side dish with a delicious dressing.

Seasoned Spinach Serves 4 as a side dish

pound mature spinach with stem and roots Sea salt

Dressing 2 tablespoons roasted sesame oil 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 teaspoon spring onion, finely chopped 1 teaspoon roasted sesame seeds, crushed 1 teaspoon sagwa-shikcho (Korean

apple vinegar) 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 garlic clove, grated or finely chopped

Black pepper, freshly ground Fill a large saucepan with water, salt well and bring to a boil. In a large bowl, prepare an ice bath.

Rinse the spinach with cold water to remove

any dirt, especially around the roots. Remove any hairs from the roots. Cut the spinach into 13⁄4-inch-long pieces, keeping the purple roots intact. Split the roots in half horizontally and keep separately.

In a medium bowl, combine the dressing ingredients and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Set aside.

Blanch the spinach in two separate batches.

In the boiling salt water, blanch the spinach stems with leaves until just wilted, about 1 minute, remove the spinach from the water and plunge in the ice bath. Repeat with the spinach stems with roots, but cook for 1 to 2 minutes before plunging into the ice bath. Remove from the ice bath, drain well and gently squeeze out any excess water.

Gently loosen the clumps of spinach with your fingers and transfer to a bowl. Toss well with the dressing. Cover and chill for about an hour to allow the flavors to mellow before serving.

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop

Aug. 6th is International Beer Day! This is a reminder to enjoy the world’s most popular adult beverage. If you’re a beer lover, then this is your day.

There’s nothing like a nice cold brew on a hot summer night (or day!). Beer has been consumed by almost every culture throughout human history, with the oldest evidence dating back to ancient Babylonia and Mesopotamia.

Archaeologists have unearthed recipes for beer that were written on clay tablets in 4300 B.C., and ceramic vessels from 3400 B.C. that are still sticky with beer residue. Everyone drank beer in ancient Egypt: pharaohs, peasants, priests, and even children, as part of their everyday diet.

Whether you like Ale, Lager, Porter, Weizen or Pilsner, make sure to raise your mug and drink up! Oh? You don’t have a mug? At the Exchange, we have a nice selection of steins – ceramic and pewter- and pilsner glasses to enjoy drinking your favorite beer. And we

now have a great selection of cool coasters to put your beer mugs on!

All are welcome to come in and browse the Exchange for these glasses and steins, as well as many other fantastic items. However, if you are not vaccinated, please wear a mask. Even though all the volunteers have been vaccinated, you will see that many of us continue to wear our masks, out of an abundance of caution. We offer hand-sanitizer when you enter the shop, and, to keep you feeling safe, we are running the air purifier which cleans the air in the Shop every hour.

I want to mention our summer hours. Our Wednesday late night shopping hours have been suspended and will resume in September. Also, for the month of August only, we will be closed on Saturdays (Aug. 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th). We get newly consigned merchandise almost every day! If you can’t make it in right away, please shop online at www.atstewartexchange.org and come to the Exchange to pick up.

The Bobby Menges Memorial Blood Drive at the Roosevelt Field Mall was a big success, collecting 82 pints of blood. This is a new record befitting of the Menges Blood Drive turning 20 that day!

This space at the mall was new to the Menges Blood Drive and worked out well: the mall staff was accommodating, the area was spacious and convenient, and there were many more “walk-in donors” than usual.

One special thing that happened was the manager of the Lego Store allowed his staff to take paid time to donate blood! Thank you to our friends at Sweeney’s Uptown Grille, who once again donated a “Pint 4 a Pint” cou-

pon for every pint of blood donated.

And as usual, the NY Blood Center ran an organized, efficient, and safe event.

The Memorial Blood Drive is a project of I’m Not Done Yet, the foundation founded by the Menges family in memory of GCHS graduate and lifelong resident of Garden City, Bobby Menges, who died of cancer in 2017 at the age of 19. I’m Not Done Yet raises funds to support programs throughout the country focusing on adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients, especially in the cancer space. School district outlines new elementary English curriculum From page 1 meet students where their needs are so that instructors can take a deeper dive on the technical aspects of Word Study, and there would be the flexibility within the classroom to give students a lot of challenge in terms of applying rules to Word decoding and application that they would need to learn. Different students may need those learning opportunities at different times, and we felt Words Their Way will provide the best levels of flexibility. It is also the mostaligned with how our students are currently performing, because they are already performing at a very high level.

Based on the input from our in-district group and the data we’ve looked at we felt confident that this is a good decision for our students,” Assistant Superintendent Cannone said.

The Word Study decision came down to the three Word Study programs -continuing the progression into a fourth academic year with Fundations (which terminates at the Grade 3 level); Words Their Way, which Cannone described as “very flexible and rigorous that can work for students in grades three through five” and a third based upon a committee recommendation, Rewards Reading Intervention, though some districts have refocused it as a general education curriculum.

Ensuring that the new ELA Word Study curriculum accommodates those district students who are already “working at a mastery level or students who need additional reinforcement or some very targeted teaching” was a chief priority for the school district.

“As we get into spring 2022 the Committee will reconvene to do an analysis of the Words Their Way implementation. This will look at the effects it has had with our students, examine data and talk about our next steps within our classes,” he noted.

Criteria for success?

Board of Education President William Holub asked how the results of the new ELA curriculum in these elementary grades would be analyzed.

“How do we determine if this is successful? What is the plan to determine the success and is it over a two, three or four year span with data analysis and data points? How will we make that assessment?” Holub asked.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha said GCUFSD has an established process to look at data whenever a new program is considered for implementation. “Looking at our district committee will come back into discussion throughout the year we have examined that format, and then looking at the assessment data will mean analyzing that data to see if the Words Their Way program is successful,” she noted.

Board President Holub also seconded a comment by School Board Trustee

Michael Cassaro about considering the GCPTA Curriculum Committee’s input, as Holub called the PTA an “important building block of our community.”

He urged the district administration to actively engage the PTA’s Curriculum Committee members.

School Board Trustee Stephanie Granville, who works as a teacher in another Nassau County school district, asked Dr. Cannone how (Wilson brand) Fundations’ success in the district but its limitation with terminating in Grade 3 changed the course the district will be heading in for ELA. In her district, Fundations is also used for the primary school grades like in Garden City Public Schools.

“We feel good about Fundations and it’s a good education product. Our students are performing consistently at a high enough level that we are ready (in 2021-2022) to bring them to a place where they can do a lot more application and transfer -- more than what Fundations for Grade 3 can offer them -- yet they’d still have the targeted and technical education they would need, and have that continuity for grades three, four and five,” Dr. Cannone said.

According to Cannone the professional development aspects of Words Their Way raises the equation for the transition in Grade 3, and for teachers at the elementary levels, because students would have Fundations for the additional year and would just have to switch to the next ELA curriculum in the following year (fourth grade).

“The teachers will assist students in making transitions, and the PD helps transfer the tools and methodologies of the students’ experience with Fundations in grades kindergarten through 2nd into Words Their Way while still keeping in mind the rigor and explicit instruction they will need and how to communicate that to students -understandings they would have developed in grades K through 2 will get to be applied in that new mode with Words Their Way learning,” Dr. Cannone told Trustee Granville.

He explains how the guiding questions for the district in this effort to develop Word Study assisted in the considerations of “continuity between primary schools, lower elementary and the upper elementary grades 3 through 5.”

“In primary (kindergarten and first grade) students learn the rules of the road with phonics and decoding. As students get older the students learn word decoding with some more of the complex aspects of Word Study and they need to start doing a lot more application. The application transfers become so, so important. They are transitioning from the ‘Learning to Read’ stages to ‘Reading to Learn,” he explained.

Trustee Granville asked if Words Their Way extends beyond the decoding and phonetic development to establishing a stronger vocabulary.

“That is a piece that I see that is consistently missing in the upper elementary kids, that they can often decode a word but they are not sure how to figure out what that means, or using in context, looking at root words or different methods,” Granville said.

Dr. Cannone said the key is to shift away from ELA techniques that would assimilate more into “pattern recognition” and not the memorization of vocabulary words, “to not present students with a list of words to memorize.”

“It’s very important to develop students’ vocabulary because people who have a strong vocabulary tend to be good readers and good communicators.

Words Their Way accomplishes that, not through memorization but through the application of rules that help kids unlock the words and figuring it out.

It would be the essence of Word Study to learn and develop their vocabulary, with accurate spelling included,” he explained for the board of education.

The in-district committee evaluated consistency and differentiation with the Word Study programs. The goal remains having all Garden City students to have the same opportunities to be exposed to a high-level curriculum and material, “AND for them to be able to apply that in ways that meet the needs of all students including our students with IEP’s and English-language learners, and typically-developing students” Dr. Cannone said.

He reiterates the need for the district to be able to strike a balance between consistency and differentiation, and that English-language learners have the additional need to master the language as it is spoken “in addition to unlocking the code of reading.”

“As we looked at the Word Study materials in front of us we talked about the focused ideas and rigor -- is the (curriculum) targeted and zeroed in on the needs of students, does it maintain that focus consistently throughout and then is it at a high enough level? We want to support our students as early as possible through a rigorous Word Study curriculum, and of course it must be responsive to our next-generation New York State ELA standards -- particularly RF3 for grades three through five,” Dr. Cannone explained.

Wakeham asked for some more clarity on the application and transfer involved with Word Study and the teaching of word decoding to elementary students.

He looked at the potential for expanding the ELA process past vocabulary and reading into the sentence structure skills and writing elements students should learn.

Superintendent Sinha said the assessment of Words Their Way as well as tangential impacts of the program on students’ writing would be indicators of strengthening the ELA skills of elementary students “and addressing what our students need in reading and writing.”

Dr. Sinha outlined that in May or June of 2022, in terms of Words Their Way program evaluation, the update will be delivered at a board of education meeting. But in July, Dr. Cannone provided a summary of what he envisions with Words Their Way. “It’s not necessarily about grammar and sentence structure, and in this particular case the application is to understand the rules of decoding and to understand the patterns when students see something that they can work with -- words they may have never encountered. The student would have a bank of data and information for them to be able to recognize the word and put it together into something that is coherent and makes sense to them. That does have an effect on how I use words later -- when I am writing and producing with words I would be able to have the words at my command and then I am able to spell them correctly and effectively.

That would assist students to have their overall use of language become more sophisticated because they can take things they read, use them for working knowledge, and they become part of what they use as a speaker and writer also,” he told the board.

Particular interest was paid to ensuring the programmatic elements align with the outcomes that Fundations gives students and educators for grades kindergarten through 2nd. According to Dr. Cannone ‘Words Their Way’ will ensure that fit. Further, as an ongoing part of the district wide curriculum the Word Study modules were needing to further the use of technology in instruction.

Separately, at its regular meeting held July 6 the Board of Education approved employment agreements with the Assistant Superintendents; Dr. Edward Cannone, assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and Dana DiCapua, assistant superintendent for business and finance. Each approval was completed as separate agenda items.

Also at the July 30 meeting, the hiring of Lauren Kaufman to become the next assistant principal at Stratford Avenue Elementary was approved. Kaufman’s official start date in the district was this

Monday, August 2, and the appointment is classified as four-year, probationary, with a salary of $128,000 per year.

Kaufman joins Christopher Hartigan, who just weeks earlier (June 15) was appointed by the board as the new Stratford Elementary Principal, as the new building leadership at the school.

Former Stratford Principal Eileen Vota was appointed as the new principal of Locust School (a primary school of kindergarten and first grade). Mrs. Vota had been the principal of Stratford Elementary School since 2010.

The board’s approvals at the July 30 special meeting included affirming the resignations of Special Education teacher at Homestead School Ashley

Long; teaching assistant at Stratford Elementary Ali Weiner, and of primary schools-level Physical Education teacher Stephanie Peragallo (all with effective dates in July).

through June 2022 at Stewart School and Mariano DeLisi as a leave replacement at Garden City High School, effective September 1 and “until the return of the teacher but no later than June 30, 2022.”

In addition, at the July 30 board meeting the official starting date for a new hire in Garden City Public Schools -Michael Vespe -- was changed from July 7, 2021 to August 9, 2021. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha explained to the Board of education that this was a necessity because Vespe worked for the New York City Public Schools system and his contractual status in that position was still technically in effect for the month reflected.

Town to showcase elite Navy Special Ops “Leap Frogs” airshow The Town of Hempstead has announced that on Monday, August 9th the U.S. Special Operations Naval Force parachute team, the “Leap Frogs”, will be performing an airshow at Town Park at Point Lookout.

“It is an honor for our United States Naval Forces to visit the largest township in the country and conduct a notable air show which involves dangerous stunts and stunning visuals,” Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin said.

The Leap Frogs are comprised of active members of the Naval Force parachute team who will be partnering with the U.S. Navy and Navy Special Operations as a recruitment effort formally known as the Warrior Challenge

Program.

Once it is show time, a designated ground crew will give precise directions to jumpers to ensure an efficient and smoothly run air show. Under the approval of the F.A.A. (Federal Aviation Administration) and depending upon the area of landing, the number of jumpers can range from 4 to 10 people at the optimal height of 12,500 feet. Jumpers can perform stunts varying from attaching smoke canisters to ankles to ensure visibility to viewers to soaring at thousands of feet above ground level while balancing on another jumper’s shoulders.

“New York City doesn’t have a huge Navy presence, so this is a great oppor-

tunity to raise awareness of the Navy and the Navy’s Special Operations in the smaller areas of New York,” Chief Kristopher Regan, the Navy Talent Acquisition Group Empire State Public Affairs Officer, stated.

The Leap Frogs will be performing at Point Lookout on Monday, August 9th, to showcase the Navy’s specialized flying skill set and precision along with various areas of the Naval Force. As the show begins at 6 PM, members of the Warriors Challenge Program encourage residents to be in attendance at 5 PM due to the punctuality of the thrilling 6 minute air show. Following the show, viewers are invited to a special meet and greet to ask questions

to Leap Frog representation consisting of Navy SEALs, SWCC (Special Warfare Combat Craft), EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Navy Divers and PR (Parachute Riggers) with regards to joining any Naval Force programs.

“Aside from the show-stopping performance, we must salute the true stars of the show – the entire U.S. Naval Force, for the protection of our country, response to disasters and contributions to global order,” Clavin concluded. “Their brotherhood is something to admire and if anyone is interested in joining, please feel free to ask them any questions after the show.”

As a candidate for trustee earlier this year, I had an opportunity to meet many of the residents impacted by the 3rd track project and heard how it greatly impacted their quality of life and home values.

While it is easy to second guess any legal action, I strongly believe as a Village we need to stand together and continue to support our neighbors who have been so unfairly impacted by the 3rd track project that included the installation of monster utility poles, loss of most of the mature greenery, light pollution from the new station, construction debris, road closures, on street parking by workers, etc.

We should all fully support our Mayor and Board of Trustees as they work to resolve this legal matter in manner that will be fair to the Village and provide equitable relief to our neighbors.

Failure of leadership

To the Editor: I am not a fan of Newsday but I heartily agree with their recent editorial. More importantly as a twenty-nine resident of Garden City, I am grateful to Robert Foxen for his sobering commentary on the embarrassing behavior of the Village leadership in attempting, in my opinion, to extort an outrageous permit fee to allow the MTA to complete the third rail extension project that will have benefits for the residents of Garden City far into the future. Objectively, let us ask the residents of the entire Village to consider: • Has the quality of life in “Little Connecticut” improved now that LIRR trains no longer blow their horns as they cross New Hyde Road; the sound mitigation from the barrier walls behind their homes and most importantly the safer traffic flows now that Clinch Road does not have to dissect New Hyde Park Road and finally the elimination of the horrendous traffic back-ups that occurred every time the gates went down.

• When it is completed, the state of the art renovation of the Merillon Avenue station will be the a boon to the residents particularly handicapped and elderly users of the LIRR. • As Mr. Foxen noted, more efficient travel times and direct access to Grand Central Station will be a boon particularly to residents in the financial industry who in large part are responsible for the increase in property values throughout Garden City.

• The Denton Avenue single lane underpass is outdated and dangerous especially in the evening for cars, bike riders and walkers.

We as a Village are better than this and it is time for our leadership to “stop wasting our money and debasing our good name”. Thank you Mr. Foxen, I could not have said in any better.

Refreshing transparency

To the Editor: Congratulations to the Village Board of Trustees for approving the long term lease for the Casino at a recent meeting.

Providing certainty to the future of this valuable community asset is a great development for the Village.

Regarding recent meetings, for anyone who has not been to a BOT meeting since April (or ever), you should know that the transformation from the prior board has been remarkable.

The prior BOT imposed a time limit that was rigidly enforced and speakers were cut off often. Now, there are no more 4-minute time limits on taxpayers speaking at the meetings. The prior BOT rarely responded to questions posed.

Speakers were almost always met with stone-faced silence and/or a curt “thank you for your comment.” Now, best efforts are made to answer any and all questions posed at the meeting. If the trustees don’t know the answer, they often turn to the relevant department head for input. Such transparency was unimaginable at the prior board’s meetings.

It is so ironic that one of those taking full advantage of this new transparency is a former BOT member who so rigidly

adhered to both practices. Now, that former Board member is allowed to go on and on, pose questions, get answers and engage in a dialogue with BOT members. Such an interaction was unheard of during the former BOT member’s tenure.

On a separate note, the suggestion in a recent letter that this BOT voted to waste legal fees on the Third Track action recently dismissed by the lower court ignores several facts. The filing of that type of lawsuit was approved by the prior board, which also approved the litigation fund. That prior board selected the lawyer and left this situation to the new Board. This BOT now has to try to find a way to deal with the Merillon Avenue monster pole fiasco, spotlight pollution, illegal storage areas, filth and debris on parkland and village greenspace, along with countless broken promises by the MTA and their contractors. The Merillon Avenue mess was a creation of the prior board who failed to negotiate a fair Memorandum of Understanding with the MTA and egregiously delayed proper legal action when the monster poles were being erected in the spring of 2020.

Finally, the idea that this project will enhance property values in the Estates Section because of the link to Grand Central is absurd. This Merillon Avenue mess has reduced property values between $20-60 million based on current estimates. That the MTA has neither put in the proper lights it promised nor buried utility lines as promised at Merillon Avenue has as much to do with the Grand Central work as it does with Yemen. Are Newsday editorial writers going to determine the future of the village? No, why don’t we leave that to the new BOT and let them continue to keep their promises like they did with the Casino agreement without being attacked for the untold failures of the prior BOT. To the Editor: The MTA/3TC’s disregard of its own 2017 Final Environmental Impact

Statement and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has resulted in 15 monster poles and nine stories of electromagnetic fields that arguably represent the worst wholesale violation of Garden City’s quality of life, environmental greenspace, and property values in Village history. Any attempts to diminish, marginalize, or ignore this intentional blight by arrogant counterparties are grounded in short-sightedness, fear, and ignorance of precedent.

Certain former Trustees and apologists for the prior Board of Trustees bemoan $100,000 having been allocated (by that same prior BOT) to legal efforts to protect the hundreds of households unquestionably impacted by these blights.

First of all, blaming trustees supported by FABGC for the spending is absurd since the vote to finally take legal action was done by the prior BOT in 2020, with the suit filed in early 2021, before the Village election.

Secondly, the pretzel logic featured in the recent court ruling assumes that Garden City would have had to anticipate the violation of specifically laid out locations of utilities by a DesignBuild Consortium a year before 3TC was even chosen! That line of reasoning pre-supposes that the Village would have had to protest some unforeseen relocation of utilities, when (in fact) the Village had no problem with what the MTA actually promised to do: “relocate PSEG electric transmission, LIRR signal and communications, Verizon, and Cablevision lines from south to north of LIRR ROW”(FEIS, Chapter 13, pages 14-18), from New Hyde Park Station to Merillon Station to Mineola Station.

Thirdly, the decision in placing monster poles and dense utility lines over homes and families, rather than over warehouses and parking lots in contravention of the explicit commitments within the FEIS, remains a live and open issue for review. A FOIL request recently honored 13 months late by the MTA confirmed that the decision was not based on feasibility, but because the consortium of international contractors viewed the MTA’s commitments as “dif-

45 Email: Editor@GCNews.com ficult” and “time consuming”. It is reasonable for further legal review to assess whether this decision was arbitrary and subject to correction.

For those who begrudge the legal fees allocated to these efforts, it should be remembered that the amount equates to about $14 per household, approximately equal to the cost of a medium cheese pizza.

Let’s compare this amount against the $20-$60 million in estimated property value impacts to project-adjacent homes, based on studies from the College of Charleston and recent sales data. The additional tax burden imposed on all other Garden City households due to these valuation impacts cannot be ignored. In addition, for context, let’s review some of the alternative spending and budgeting decisions made by prior Boards of Trustees (without protest from the apologists):

• More than $100,000 spent on legal fees opposing three handicapped parking spaces.

• $1.2 million diverted by the prior Third Track Committee from Community Benefit Funds—intended to repair/restore project-impacted areas— for modified bricks at the unrelated Nassau Blvd Station parking lot.

• $640,000 in additional proposed spending on Nassau Blvd Station walls and planters (but fortunately rejected by the current BOT). Incidentally, check out the three to five cars parked at Nassau Blvd Station at 3PM or 4PM on a workday to fully appreciate that proposal.

• $342,000 for design and architectural plans for the Western Fire Station.

• $7.5 million previously reserved for the demolition and replacement of Western Fire Station, despite the opposition of the Western POA Firehouse

Response to MTA

They depict shrubs 48" tall covering a 14' tall wall. The wall consists of a 6' retaining wall with a 4' railing on top of it and an 8' sound wall behind.

• The Village asked for 25-30' tall Norway Spruces be added and that 18' tall Green Giant plants also be added.

• We have had experience with renderings from the Contractor. Please see below the rendering for Merillon Avenue Station and a picture of the actual station being built.

The Contractor/MTA heard our concerns at our meeting but did nothing to correct the mistakes. They continue to do whatever is necessary to stay on time and budget regardless of the consequences to the neighborhood. It is interesting to note the survey scores received by the contractor in Garden City. He constantly receives failing marks, but does not publish or correct the short comings.

The Contractor has never utilized bussing for workers as specified in the contract. They have used children's playgrounds to park their cars. They have overtaken land that they were denied access to and stored materials and vehicles. They built a complete track switch in the street that caused school buses to change their routes with no notification or permission from the village. They store material without permission on Garden City property. They have used green fields as roadways and destroyed existing vegetation in doing so.

They have shown no progress in meeting Village needs. There has been no landscaping at the end of Kensington Road to Brixton Road since December 2018.

They said they put the monster poles outside the sound walls to make the sound walls more effective when in fact they did the opposite making the sound walls less effective.

To the Editor: On July 28, 2021, the LIRR Expansion Project sent out a press release that was not accurate.

Wit regards to the enhanced landscape plan: This plan was presented to the Village at a meeting on July 9, 2021, and the Village had the following comments which were not answered or corrected.

The Village did not decline but asked that the drawings be corrected to reflect reality and then resubmit. In addition, the Village asked for renderings of other areas that could be shown to the various POAs to get input from concerned neighbors.

Specific concerns: • The retaining and sound walls depicted were not correctly shown, the walls are approximately 14' tall and not the 8' high wall as shown.

• The rendering did not depict the fence line installed above the retaining wall. (Estimated to be at least 4' tall.)

• The renderings depicted the large existing evergreens after they were devastated by the construction work.

Contractor needs to hire an arborist to determine if these trees will live or do they need to be replaced. At the meeting a Garden City Village landscape expert be brought in and spend time walking the site with the Village.

• The rendering taken was too far away to get a true perspective of how the walls are not hidden.

• The angles selected carefully hid the 90' monster poles. They are not hidden by the existing trees since those trees were destroyed way beyond the height of the wall.

• The many large trees shown were existing after they were devastated during construction. The main emphasis must be on the wall and not existing trees.

Committee and most village taxpayers.

If this is the worst wholesale violation of GC quality of life, fully playing out legal options is essential to protect the Village today and avoid a precedent of caving to arrogant counterparties.

Apologists seek a Neville Chamberlain; we need a Winston Churchill.

Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y. for her tremendous leadership over the past few weeks in working to help lift the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s suspension of canine imports from over 100 countries. Rice championed a $3 million funding amendment that passed the U.S. House last week and would help provide much-needed resources for the CDC to streamline inspections and verify documentation. Many of our military

heroes have been separated from their pets, and countless rescues remain in limbo around the globe as a result of this policy, but Rice is making progress.

Rice has also been a supporter of numerous animal protection issues and is a cosponsor of the SAFE Act to end horse slaughter in the U.S; the PREPARED Act to help animals during natural disasters; the Big Cat Public Safety Act to ban the ownership of Tigers, Lions, and other dangerous big cats; and the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act to end the trade of shark fins.

The good people of New York’s 4th Congressional District are fortunate to have Kathleen Rice representing them in Washington, D.C., and we applaud her continued work to protect animals.

GC Summer Swimming returns to pool for 2021 season GC Summer Swimming officially returned for the 2021 season! Though the league was unable to host dual meets or championships this summer, the GC Pool found a way to make the season possible by having daily practices and hosting a series of intramural time trials.

Thank you to all the coaches, pool staff, and parents who worked tirelessly to bring the swim teams back to the GC Pool this summer! And a big congratulations to all our swimmers who have

worked so hard at practices and at time trials!

The 2021 season concludes next Saturday, August 7, from 8–9:30 a.m., with the annual Christopher Crafa Memorial Blue & White Meet. All current and former swimmers and families are welcome to attend to celebrate the end of the season and honor the memory of Chris! GCAA Baseball - 11U State Tournament Wrap Up

A beautiful rainbow lit up the sky during the tournament.

After going undefeated in the Sectional Round, the GCAA 11U team entered the State tournament in Horseheads last week on quite a roll. Game one featured a pitcher’s duel between Garden City and New Rochelle, the winner of the NYC/Westchester Section. Daniel Santopietro continued to put up zeros on the mound and a two run double by Vance Palmer helped lead the maroon and grey to an opening game victory.

In game two, GC fell behind early to Tri-Village (Albany) but fought back valiantly to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth before eventually falling 9-5. Spurred on by the rallying cry “we ain’t leavin’”, the boys were determined to avoid an early exit at all costs.

Monday’s game against Saratoga

Springs saw GC fall behind 5-0 after the first inning, but steady relief pitching from Dominick Trimarchi, Ryan Desiderio and James Walker settled things down to allow the offense to explode for 13 unanswered runs in an 18-9 victory.

Game four on Tuesday pitted Garden City against a solid Baldwinsville (Syracuse) squad and runs were at a premium early on.

Brady Ahern fired a gem over 5 1/3 innings, but some leaky defense turned a 3-2 lead into a 5-3 deficit that could have been larger if not for some gutsy relief work from Caiden Lang.

What happened next was one for the ages. Brady Ahern willingly took the first pitch in the back, and Christian Roddini followed with a booming double to give GC second and third with none out. Ryan

The stage was set for the top of the order to deliver a historic comeback victory and Matthew Grimpel was up to the task, rifling an 0-2 fastball into the right center field gap to give Garden City an improbable walkoff win.

Unfortunately, the magic did not carry over into game 5, as our boys of summer fell to Tri-Village for the

second time, 8-3. Over the course of nearly six weeks, these thirteen amazing 10- and 11-year-old boys compiled a record of 10-3 to finish third in the entire state, a result that no other Garden City team has ever surpassed.

Even more important than the on field results were the lessons they learned and taught along the way— by pouring their hearts and souls into becoming the best team they could possibly be, they were able to take their friends, family and this community on the ride of a lifetime!

Summer Concerts at the Gazebo

Recreation and Parks Summer Concerts at the Gazebo have begun.

Concerts are held at the gazebo on the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues and begin at 7:15 p.m. Bring a chair, wear a mask and please practice social distancing while attending the concert.

In the case of less than “better than perfect” weather, the concert will be moved to St. Paul’s Cluett Hall.
