State senators examine college costs, offer resources
BRINGING HOLIDAY CHEER
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
Pat DiMattia has served for several years as the CPOA liaison to the Garden City Traffic Commission. During the CPOA’s meeting on Tuesday, she explained the lack of community input back at the original Commission discussion on September 19, especially
As costs of a college education continue to rise and create stressful financial burdens for families across Nassau County and the region, elected officials have planned new methods of community outreach and action plans to develop better longterm economic stability for Long Islanders. In Garden City at Nassau County Community College on Friday, November 1, New York State Senators including Long Island’s Senator Kevin Thomas of District No. 6 (the successor to longtime Sen. Kemp Hannon of Garden City) and Sen. James Gaughran representing District No. 5 North Shore communities attended a NY State Senate Standing Committee on Higher Education hearing to examine accessibility and affordability of public higher education in New York. The hearing was organized by the chair of the State Senate Standing Committee on Higher Education, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. At the time of the hearing, Senator Gaughran, the Long Island representative on the State Senate Higher Education Committee, commented “The costs of higher education in the United States have left a generation of young adults with bankrupting debt. While the federal government has reneged on its obligation to help students attain higher education and address the student loan debt crisis, New York is leading the way to ensure affordable, quality higher education.” Senator Kevin Thomas’ district includes Garden City and area colleges Adelphi University, Hofstra University and SUNY schools Farmingdale State College and Nassau Community College. Immediately following the November 1 hearing at NCC, SenatorThomas said, “One of the most troubling challenges facing students and families across New York State is the soaring cost of higher education. New Yorkers deserve a fair and equal opportunity to pursue their education without the burden of crippling debt. My Senate colleagues and I are committed to developing solutions that support our students, faculty, and taxpayers. I want to thank Senator Toby Ann Stavisky for organizing this event and for her ongoing commitment to this critically important issue.” Senator Thomas serves as chair of State Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee as prior to his election and taking office

Proposed crosswalk at St. Joseph’s, 4th St. issues lead CPOA discussion
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND Parents who support adding a crosswalk on Fourth Street for students at St. Joseph’s School attended the Central Property Owners Association meeting at the senior center on December 10th to make their views known. However Fourth Street residents expressed concern over what they say is chaotic driver behavior with parents and
school buses picking up children on their block, as well as their questions over St. Joseph’s planning for school and religious education traffic. The issue had come up previously at a September meeting of the Garden City Traffic Commission, but the commission voted to discontinue studying whether a crosswalk was warranted. The Commission heard additional comments on the topic
at its November 21st meeting.
