Village seeking grants for water treatment systems

Veterans Day in the Village: Ceremony, American Legion meetings set to resume BY RIKKI MASSAND This Veterans Day, Thursday November 11, 2021, the Auxiliary unit of William Bradford Turner American Legion Post #265, will be hosting “Meet the Veterans” at the Garden City Public Library on 7th Street, in the large meeting room on the lower level. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m., and feature a U.S. Armed Services’ veteran
speaking about their experience. The schedule is for “Meet the Veterans” to continue for roughly 45 minutes as immediately thereafter, veterans, family members, supporters and elected officials will go outside to the Veterans Memorial by the gazebo, gathering at 10:45 a.m. for the annual Veterans Day ceremony where the Eleventh Hour on the 11th Day of the 11th Month will be commemorated. The Village of Garden City, which has had to treat water from its wells in order to follow the recent New York State clean water mandates, will be seeking grants to assist with the costs. In order to remove the contaminant 1,4 dioxane, the Village is currently performing wellhead treatments on six village-owned wells. At its October 21 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved several agreements with engineering consultants H2M Architects + Engineers, based in Melville, related to construction on these wells. The firm will be preparing grant applications on behalf of the Village for four treatment projects, with each grant proposal having a deadline of November 22, 2021. For preparing each of the four project’s grant applications H2M’s fee will be $3,000 each. Once H2M prepares each grant application, Village Attorney Peter Bee’s firm will review them prior to submission. Dozens of residents joined last week’s Environmental Advisory Board (“EAB”) meeting in person and by Zoom to learn more about why so many communities are placing restrictions on Gas Powered Leaf Blowers (“GPLBs”). The question before the EAB is whether it is time to recommend Garden City place restrictions on GPLBs.
