We are beyond thrilled to welcome you back to Portland Art Museum (PAM) and our partner venues on the South Park Blocks for a fully in-person Portland Book Festival (PBF) on Saturday, November 5.
More than 100 presenters from near and far join us for this year’s event. New this year: the week of the Festival, different partners all around the city will host PBF Cover to Cover events. We’re introducing the Friday Night Book Market, where you can shop the book fair early—stock up and enjoy not having to carry your books all day on Saturday! We’ve also expanded the Kids Stage, which is located in the PAM Fields Ballroom this year.
Our best Festival advice remains to be open to the unexpected: check out a panel in a genre you don’t typically read, explore the pop-up readings in the PAM galleries, meet your new favorite local press at the book fair. You might discover something you didn’t even know you were looking for; that’s part of the magic of the Festival day.
Share your Festival experience with #PDXBookFest, and we look forward to seeing you at Portland Book Festival on Saturday, November 5.
Dear Festival attendees, Portland Book Festival is an enduring community enrichment event, and we are thrilled to be back downtown with all of you. We are returning as the presenting sponsor of Portland Book Festival because Bank of America believes in the power of the arts and community partnerships, such as Literary Arts, to help economies thrive and to educate and enrich societies while creating greater cultural under standing. Literature and the art of storytelling eliminates barriers and unites people across cultures, experiences, and ideas. We applaud Literary Arts’ efforts as this event draws us together in a way that is essential to the wellbeing of our city’s economy and communities. This is how we build a better future for all.
Thank you for joining us.
Portland Book Festival is a program of Literary Arts, a communitybased nonprofit located in downtown Portland with a 38-year history of serving Oregon’s readers and writers. Our mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.
Portland Book Festival features more than 100 presenters in onstage author events, children’s story times, pop-up readings, and writing workshops. This one-day celebration also includes a book fair featuring more than 60 national and local vendors.

Youth Programs at Literary Arts are pleased to offer free writing workshops to youth as part of Portland Book Festival. Registration is required, and class size is limit ed. The classes will take place on the second floor of the Mark building, in the East and West Conference Rooms. Learn more and sign up at literary-arts.org/PBF.
Facilitator: Dey Rivers Saturday, Nov. 5 | 10:00–11:30 a.m.
In this workshop, we’ll learn how to talk to and about artwork through poetry. Also known as Ekphrastic writing! We’ll look at examples of other artists and writers who have done the same and take ourselves on a journey using writing exercises and imagination, creating poems line by line along the way.
Facilitator: Alex Behr Saturday, Nov. 5 | 10:00–11:30 a.m.
The famous abstract painter Joan Mitchell once said, “My paintings repeat a feeling about Lake Michigan, or water, or fields. . . . it’s more like a poem, and that’s what I want to paint.” She was inspired by poet friends, too. In this workshop, we’ll write poetry and turn it into art.
Participants brainstorm about a special object that triggers a strong memory or mood. They can bring in their object, use a photo, or use their memories. We’ll use music, examples, and visualizations to relax and let ideas flow. Prompts will be offered to help participants, if needed, such as: “Imagine you found this object that you thought you’d lost forever. What people, sounds, tastes, places, or emotions come to mind?”
Facilitator: Damien Miles-Paulson Saturday, Nov. 5 | 2:45–4:15 p.m.
“She had spoken it; but she trembled when it was done, conscious that her words were listened to, and daring not even to try to observe their effect.” —Jane Austen, from Persuasion
In this workshop, we will write stories built around dialogue, around speech. Once written, we will perform the words aloud, seeing how they flow as an actual conversation. As our words are being read, we will listen, observe their effect, take notes, revise, and when we leave, we will have a draft that trembles with the sublime potential of speech.
Portland Book Festival attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, or take public transit to the Festival. There are plenti ful bus stops near the Festival grounds. The Museum/Festival does NOT have a dedicated parking lot, but lot and street parking are available throughout downtown Portland.

Write Around Portland
By purchasing books at Portland Book Festival, you are support ing the authors and publishers who travel from near and far to share their work at the Festival and the booksellers and vendors who invest time and expense to be at the book fair. Please buy early and often, and know you are supporting the sustainability of Portland Book Festival.
Book dealers are NOT allowed to bring books into the book sign ing area. Dealers with rolling carts and/or wagons are not allowed on the Festival grounds.
(third floor)
A book lover’s delight! Beat the crowd with early access to our exhibitor fair the night before Portland Book Festival. Browse all vendors in the Kridel Grand and Fields Ballrooms while enjoying music by DJ Jimbo, crafts with Yuki Origami, and printmaking with Independent Publishing Resource Center. Bring a bag and buy your books on Friday night, so you won’t have to tote them around on Saturday. Hint: You may pick up your Festival passes here too, saving you a trip to the advance box office.
(first floor)
Portland Book Festival’s 2022 Virtual Marketplace is an online center that provides PBF exhibitors a virtual space to showcase their businesses online during the Festival. Find all the in-person vendors as well as additional online vendors in the PBF Virtual Marketplace at literary-arts.org/virtual-marketplace.
A Festival pass admits you to all in-person Festival events, with the exception of the Selma Blair and Taylor Jenkins Reid events, which require a ticket for entry. We encourage you to purchase and pick up your passes in advance. Advance passes and informa tion available at literary-arts.org/PBF.
Entry to and seating at Festival events is available on a firstcome, first-served basis, and standing in line does NOT guaran tee entry to any specific event even with a Festival pass. Plan to arrive early to your desired events. Saving seats is not permitted. All rooms will be cleared between events. If your desired event is at capacity, you can check out a different discussion, find a popup reading, explore the Portland Art Museum, or take a break at the food carts.
Authors will sign books immediately following their onstage event unless otherwise noted. Books must be purchased from a Festival bookstore in order to be signed, with the exception of one pre-owned book per author.
The Festival features satellite bookstores at every all-day Festival stage, where attendees can purchase a book and get it signed on site. See page 11 for details on each satellite bookstore.
