Literacy Mid-South 2018-2019 Annual Report
Literacy Mid-South 2018-2019 Annual Report – 1
Dear Friends,
Amidst the excitement of Memphis’ bicentennial celebration, our city has also spent time refecting on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to be over the next 200 years. As we have these conversations, there is one thing that I am hearing over and over again: there is a growing awareness that Memphis needs literacy support for children and adults alike.
Far too many students in Shelby County leave third grade not reading at grade level. By partnering with over 20 organizations within Memphis, we work to empower students with the literacy resources that they need to rise above these statistics.
Additionally, we cannot ignore that many adults in our community are working hard to continue their learning journeys. These adults - parents, grandparents, employees, valued members of our community - have difculty reading bus maps, job applications, prescription labels, and bedtime stories.
The need for literacy in Memphis is truly vital for learners of all ages and backgrounds. This is why we are excited to launch the next phase of Read901.
With Read901, we will continue to work with adults and out-of-school time partners as we have for several years, but we will seek new ways to lift the voices of parents and students across Memphis. One thing is certain: literacy afects every area of our city and it will take collaboration and partnership on all fronts to combat the dire need for literacy support in Memphis.
Read901 is for all of us: families, volunteers, schools, corporations, nonprofts, community entities, and faith-based organizations. We will seek to build, maintain, and strengthen the literacy system in Memphis. Literacy Mid-South will grow this movement not as the controlling entity, but rather as a partner to improve literacy for everyone.
We have the great honor to help transform the lives of people throughout our city. When you join Read901, you are directly helping fellow Memphians to better support their families, thrive in and out of the classroom, and fnd a new confdence within themselves. Simply put, you help learners of all ages and backgrounds believe that they can, quite literally, turn a new page in their learning journey.
There are many challenges that await us in the coming year, but, as a community, I have faith that we can fnd our way to new beginnings and continue to become a city that reads together.
In gratitude,
Knox Shelton Executive Director

Literacy Mid-South coordinates this city-wide initiative to increase 3rd grade reading profciency in Memphis and Shelby County. We partner with local organizations, people, and other community based initiatives to coordinate and align reading eforts, interventions, and programs across the city. Read901 supports partner organizations’ eforts to incorporate literacy education into their after-school and summer programs.
To ensure the success of literacy education programs at partner organizations, Read901 also facilitates an AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program. Through this program, Read901 designates VISTAs to serve partnering organizations in creating sustainable, data-driven, out-of-school time, literacy programming. Through the Read901 initiative, Literacy Mid-South serves as the convener for the only Out-of-School Time (OST) Network in Shelby County. The Read901 OST Network is a coordinated group focused on improving 3rd grade reading profciency by engaging in collaborative action around out-of-school time support.

Learner Spotlight Adriana Abraham
After moving from Chihuahua, Mexico to Memphis, Adriana discovered that she could not continue her career as a psychologist without acquiring a new license in the U.S. As she began to navigate this certifcation process, Adriana met Sierra, a Literacy MidSouth volunteer tutor. Adriana and Sierra worked together on reading comprehension, reading aloud, and pronunciation. Fast forward two years: Adriana is now pursuing her Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Faith and Heath: Pastoral Therapy at the Memphis Theological Seminary, which will make her a licensed therapist in the U.S. After she completes this degree, Adriana plans to sign up as a Literacy Mid-South volunteer tutor herself -- truly coming full circle in our program to help another learner in need.
As a Lost Boy of Sudan, Abraham was forced to leave his home during the Second Sudanese Civil War. After years of moving in search of a safe place for him and his growing family, Abraham arrived to Memphis in 2002. He soon discovered that he needed to obtain his GED in order to give his family a better life. Abraham has worked with his Literacy MidSouth tutor, Susan, for 3 years on math skills, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. Susan admires him for everything he’s gone through and strives to achieve. In all that he does, Abraham keeps his eyes on his goal of obtaining a GED. Abraham works so hard to not only improve himself, but also improve his family’s life.

Volunteer Spotlight
Wilson Russell
Dr. Wilson Justice, a retired optometrist, described how he encountered illiteracy in Memphis frsthand. “As an optometrist, I regularly gave eye exams to patients. During the exam, I would ask patients to read each line. I realized that, for some of these patients, it wasn’t that they couldn’t see the letters. These patients couldn’t read the letters.” This moment stuck with him. Wilson joined Literacy Mid-South as a volunteer tutor four years ago. Wilson and his learner, Meligi, have been working on literacy skills together at Benjamin Hooks Central Library. We are so thankful for all of our dedicated teams of volunteer tutors and learners like Wilson and Meligi!
For the past two years, Russell Joy has been a classroom instructor for Literacy Mid-South. Since retiring after 30+ years as a teacher and principal in the Memphis area, Russell has given some of his free time over to instructing our English language learning (ELL) class at Catholic Charities of West Tennessee. Russell’s warm personality and captivating enthusiasm flls the classroom and inspires his students from all over the globe. He recently organized a lunch for his ELL class at Los Comales where they enjoyed great food and conversation with one another. Additionally, Russell has served as a volunteer mentor to Literacy Mid-South tutors interested in working with ELL.
